Subject: HPFS Questions
We had a problem with an IBM PS/2 running OS/2 v1.2 with the HPFS. Through
a turn of events, the files in the root were moved by the user (rather than
copied, thanks to File Manager) and the machine later "locked up" and
was rebooted.
Like most computers, booting with an empty root directory does not go
smoothly. We were faced with a recovery job...
It is my understanding that OS/2 cannot be started from floppy.. But, I
also remembered that the Corrective Service Diskettes(CSD) seemed to
contradict this. We inserted the first CSD and when the logo appeared
pressed ESCAPE. This seemed to give us an OS/2 A: prompt, but attempts to
access our c: drive failed because it had been "incorrectly stopped"?
Running CHKDSK as recommended in the error message did not help.
The only alternative was to re-install OS/2 and hope for the best.
Questions:
1. Are there any preventative measures I can take to help me in the
future? ...boot diskettes, special boot partition with an Emergency
System,...anything?
2. How might I restore my backups? Is there a 'stand alone restore'? or
is my only solution to re-install OS/2 and then restore?
3. If there are no great solutions to the above questions... then what
disaster plans do users of HPFS have in place for critical systems such as
servers, etc.
Comments Please...

Subject: Attaching a SONY CDROM to OS/2
I would like to attach a Sony CDROM (CDU6211) to Model 80 File Server
It is a SCSI drive. My current configuration is:
IBM PS/2 Model 80-111 with a IBM SCSI card, internal 320
scsi disk, an external 320 SCSI disk and the CD ROM. The hardware
is happy and knows the device is there. However, it is quite apparent:-)
that I need a OS/2 driver for the Sony cd. The drive came with
Corel Draw and the Tech support center said they didn't have a driver
to do what I want.
Does anyone know where I can purchase, anonymous ftp ... a driver
for the Sony CD for OS/2 V1.3EE?
Thanks in advance

IBM is divided into USA and the rest of the world, called World Trade (WT)
WT is subdivided into several regions, one of which, EMEA, covers countries in
Europe, Middle East and Africa. The PS/2 Tools package has been announced
by EMEA. What this implies now is that any country which is part of EMEA
can now decide whether or not it wishes to make that set of tools
available to its own customers.
I spoke to the manager of the group responsible for the tools and he told
me that the only way to get them at the moment is to get someone in an
EMEA country to buy them and send them to you. If the response to the tools
is good then IBM US might decide to make them available also.

Well, I had some offline conversation with "RICKW" on this matter, and I
checked the list of things fixed in CSD 5015, and indeed I found this very
problem right there. It is called "JR03315: 3270 Session Window Disappears",
and describes exactly Rick's problem. I have tried to reproduce it here on
several 5015 machines, with no success. Have you by any chanse installed
3270 emulation AFTER the CSD on your 5015 machines which have the problem
(and made that installation off the original 5000 diskettes) ?

Steve is right| I just tried the virscan program, and it is a family mode
app. I believe that your IBM rep (in the USA, that is) may give it to you
for free if you agree to the licensing agreement (correct me if i'm wrong).

No no...Bill Gates stressed that developers should develop for WINDOWS,
since those applications will run under NT (I *refuse* to call NT OS/2
3.0, and I think that Microsoft chose the name in poor taste).
The reason Microsoft wants people to ignore OS/2 2.0, IN MY OPINION, is
that it runs Windows applications (and run on clones, and provide memory
protection, and the list goes on and on and on), but Microsoft's lack of
development work on the project means (much) less royalties. By urging
people to NT, they get to have their cake and eat it to.

Tell that to them. Microsoft has REPEATEDLY told developers to develop
for Windows and to FORGET PRESENTATION MANAGER.
> In a
>marketing slideshow for LanMan, they show DOS as a low-end platform,

Because they can make more money first selling to the grass-roots (i.e.
you guys) that by selling to the corporate customer; once the corporate
people (including large development houses) see the "little people"
eating up Windows like pancakes on Sunday morning, they say "HEY! Here
are all of these people using Windows. We can make money/increase
productivity/insert_your_favorite_business_phrase_here by using Windows
instead of this operating system used primarily for in-house applications
that no one else uses." Then corporate buys lots of copies, too.
The point here is that Microsoft KNOWS IT HAS EVERYTHING TO GAIN by
promoting Windows as the low-end and OS/2 as the high end. They look
like they are sharing the limelight with IBM, while Bill Gates laughs on
his way to the bank.
I have said it before, and I'll say it again: Microsoft has done an
EXCELLENT JOB of marketing Windows (now, if it was just worth a darn).
> Given the
>multiplatform development of Windows NT, MS seems to be maneuvering Windows

NT is not Windows. NT is a replacement for OS/2, and Windows is the
replacement for PM, according to Microsoft.

Then, why do they keep promoting it like they do, and downplay OS/2 2.0?

Subject: New Name for OS/2?
Date: 4 Jul 91 23:01:08 GMT
Organization: University of Chicago
I'd like to revive the discussion of a new name for OS/2. In case you
haven't heard, IBM is interested in a new name for OS/2, something to
help its marketing. And the company is listening to its users on the
matter.
So, here are a few suggestions to get us started. I have no idea whether
these can be trademarked or not.
(1) Unity 1.0. I like it because it has a "uni" at the front (popular with
net people and hinting at that other operating system) and expresses
a nice, positive message. It also roughly describes OS/2 2.0 -- it
unites DOS, Windows, OS/2 1.x and OS/2 2.x programs.
(2) Intuition 1.0. OK, so perhaps this name stretches credibility. I wouldn't
call Windows intuitive. When my PC starts asking _me_ the right questions
I'll spring for intuitive. The name also sounds a bit squishy, if that's
an adjective. But it isn't too bad.
(3) LetWin 1.0. A little bit of a joke here. An (the?) author of OS/2,
with appropriate capitalization to pick on Micr*s*ft.
(4) WeWin 1.0. Ditto.
(5) WeWon 1.0. Sorry, just couldn't resist.
(6) WishList 1.0. What more could we want in an operating system, after
all?
(7) Reality 1.0. I like this one. IBM could take out a full page ad in the
Wall Street Journal (remember Apple?) with the headline, "After all the
Windows hype, isn't it time for..." Perhaps they could even start the
version number with 1.01, to sound like a college course.
(8) MouseTrap 1.0. Fits in with the "A better DOS than DOS..." slogan
("Build a better...") Not too corporate, though. Then again, that
was the problem with the previous name.
(9) Relief 1.0. Might get in trouble with the stomach tablet people on this
one, though.
10) TaskMaster 1.0. On second thought, it sounds like the operating system
is your boss, not the other way around.
11) MultiDOS 1.0. Short, simple, and sweet.
I'll keep thinking.
