Subject: PMZIP (and REXX questions)
> I've appreciated your REXX procedure ARCtoZIP.CMD, because

I think you'll need OS/2 specific REXX documentation to do serious
development in that environment. I'll try to answer your questions, but
it probably won't be long before other issues come up.
> My program try to delete temporary file, but a system error is returned
> because the file isn't closed. I've seen your REXX procedure call
> LINEOUT subroutine.
As you suspect, you can use LINEOUT to close a file. Once a file is
closed, you should be able to delete it.
> Can you send to me a copy of this procedure?
LINEOUT is built into IBM's REXX, so you don't need a copy of the
procedure (and I don't have a copy to send you).
> What can I use in place of MAKEBUF cms-command creating a stack?
There is no direct equivalent to MAKEBUF. The closes thing I'm aware
of is the RXQUEUE function. I think something like this should work:
q = rxqueue("create") /* create a queue, let REXX provide a name */
queue 'data' /* queue data */
say rxqueue("delete", q) /* delete the queue (0 = success) */
say queued() /* this doesn't say 0 */
The manual states "Deletion of a queue with remaining items, destroys
those items". However, the remaining items do not appear to be
destroyed, so it looks like RXQUEUE is broken, at least in OS/2 1.3 EE.
Good luck!
- Nico Mak
P.S. Since your message was titled "PMZIP ...", this is probably a good
time to mention that I just released WinZip, a Windows 3.0 version of
the PMZIP ZIP file manager. Here's a brief comparison of PMZIP and
WinZip:
The main WinZip window uses an extended-selection list box for files in
a ZIP instead of a multi-selection list box, since that feature is built
into Windows. (Hopefully OS/2 2.0 will include extended-selection list
box controls!)
WinZip doesn't support the File Manager drag and drop interface. To
compensate, it it features an expandable "Add" dialog box that lets you
add multiple files to ZIP in one pass.
Both PMZIP and WinZip use the same SAA/CUA compatible interface for
adding, deleting, extracting, and viewing members of a ZIP file, include
extensive online hypertext help/documentation, etc. Both require the
Shareware PKZIP/PKUNZIP product from PKWARE, Inc.
Registered users of PMZIP will receive a free copy of WinZip, and orders
for either program received in 1991 will include a registered copy of
both products.

any program which makes OS/2 hard copy screen into some picture format (for
example PIC, PIF, TIFF, IBM IOCA or IBM GOCA). Any answer will be invited.

Subject: OS/2 1.3 & 2.0 announcement next week
IBM will be announcing OS/2 2.0 (reannouncing 1.3) next week starting on Monday
concluding on Thursday to different groups.
Monday, West Coast: The announcement will occur to dealers who made quote over
the last year.
Monday - Wednesday, East Coast: The annoucement will occur to large IBM
customers, internal personal and (I believe) the press.
Thursday, Nationwide: IBM will transmit via FTN announcement information on
OS/2 2.0 & 1.3 from 13:30 - 16:00 CDT. It is open to customers and I've
reserved a spot for myself. Any Cray employee wishing to come can either
contact our S.E. or me. (?Car pool?)
I expect to hear at least the following (plus much more):
-- Availability date of around August 1991 for 2.0.
-- Some type of clone acceptence and support statement.
-- OS/2 - hardware bundling:
-- OS/2 shipped on certain PS/2s (maybe all 386SX and above)
-- OS/2 shipped with certain clone manufacturers.
-- DOS support
-- Up to 240 DOS & Windows sessions
-- DPMI (32bit DOS extender) version .9 support
-- DPMI version 1.0 support for OS/2 2.1
-- DOS drivers support as shipped for DOS (memory
comes from the DOS box).
-- 612KB conventional memory after loading DOS (normally 512KB).
-- Cut & Paste for DOS applications in OS/2 windows
-- DOS drivers using VDDI don't use DOS memory.
-- DOS application can not freeze entire machine
-- Multiple DOS applications can execute within same machine.
-- Windows support
-- Everything DOS has plus Windows 3.0 application support.
-- Lower price for OS/2 2.0 (possibly $149.95). Free upgrade from
OS/2 1.1, 1.2 & 1.3. Possibly a lower price for OS/2 1.3. This
is Standard Edition (maybe even EE). Possible upgrade path from Windows.
-- Drop of Extended Edition for OS/2 2.0. This is the unbundling of
EE. Existing EE users will recieve ES (Extended Services (?)) which
is all the EE components. The EE componets will be individually
available (eg: LS - Lan Server, etc).
-- OS/2 PM applications shipped with OS/2 2.0. These will be like Window 3.0
but more of them.
-- Desktop background (bit maps instead of a grey screen) and screen saver
support.
-- IBM 32 bit compilers and PM based toolkits (eg: MS's Programmer Workbench in
PM instead of VIO).
-- OS/2 native enhancements. Too numerous to go into but include 32 bit native
programs (512MB virtual memory per process w/2.0 & 2GB w/2.1), 32 bit API
include a 32bit PM API, etc.

* Editor's note:
* This is an extract of an ongoing discussion on the SRVREQ-L. It
* discusses the problem of hanging spooled jobs, waiting for an EOF.
* ------------------------------------------------------------
I think all this talk about the print server is starting to confuse
people.
First, under PCLP and OS/2 (and more than likely any of the Microsoft
LAN Manager spinoffs) a print job has a "spooling" status until an end of job
marker is sent. Most good applications will send it. But for those that
don't, the user must force one manually by using Control-Alt-Keypad*. There
is no utility program to load under OS/2 or PCLP (I'm don't know about 3com)
to enable this. It is always there for the user and has been since the
earliest days of PCLP.
Under Netware (and now under OS/2 1.3), there is a time option. The spooler
is given the amount of time to wait before it considers the job done and to
start printing. If the time is set to zero, then it will wait forever or until
it receives and end of job signal.
The proper thing to do would be to check the queue status to see what the
job is doing. Is it waiting for more information or what?L
I know this doesn't answer the question, but maybe it makes things a little
bit clearer.

Subject: OS/2 1.2 EE w/ modem
I am using OS/2 1.2 Communications Manager to dial in to my VM host
via an IBM 1200 baud modem. I have no trouble dialing in and setting
up a connection, but I cannot perform file transfer operations. When
I issue a send or receive command, it appears as though Communications
Manager sends the commands to the wrong place. What I mean is that
instead of commands being issued to CMS, they seem to be sent to the
first command line I get when I dial in. (After dialing in I have to
issue a CALL 110 command and then specify VT100 for display type.) I
say this because the emulator window displays a # prompt with
UNKNOWN COMMAND, the same message I would get if I entered something
wrong at the CALL 100 or VT100 stage. Has anyone experienced a similar
problem, or does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark (ST802107@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU)

Richard, and all, DOS sessions under OS/2 2.00 will be quite powerful.
They will have the ability to run straight DOS applications, have
613KB of RAM available to those DOS apps. For extenders, you can use
Extended memory, Expanded memory DOS EMS 4.0, or DPMI. With DOS
extended memory each app will have up to 48Mb available; with DOS EMS,
up to 32 MB per app; It will also allow more than 32 DOS applications.
OS/2 2.00 will also run Windows 2.1 AND 3.x programs ****WITH NO EXTRA
SOFTWARE****; You will not need to buy either version of Windows!!!
Yes, I did say per app!! Remember the Windows limitations of 16Mb for
ALL apps? And OS/2 2.00 allows virtual memory of up to 512Mb, the
size of the largest fixed disk supported by IBM; Windows can only
provide virtual memory of four times (4x) the available REAL RAM.
Is this not DOS better than DOS and Windows better than Windows??? I
say ABSOLUTELY!!! <G>
Eat your heart out, Bill!

I've since been told by somebody within Microsoft that Excel 3.0 uses the
same "layer" technique as the previous 2.x version, and that it won't be just
an SMK port. Still no multi-threading, but it's supposed to be more responsive
than before.
The same contact at MS also suggests the release version of WLO will
perform a lot better than the pre-release versions -- there's been further
work on Window creation and DC creation which were slow points in the
pre-release versions.
I remain personally skeptical about WLO as an approach to creating
high-quality PM apps.

Subject: sending a .CMD procedure to sleep: for use with an lpr daemon
Date: 11 Apr 91 15:34:27 GMT
I'm using ftp sofwares pc/tcp for os/2, which seems to work quite well (&
wasn't a big hassle to install). But I want to be able to print to remote
printers automatically, as I don't have a printer connected directly to
the machine.
Their software supports the Berkely lpr routines, so if I print the file
to disk, then I can do "lpr -P printer -S node file.name" without any
problem. But I'd rather have a little daemon sitting there waiting for
the "file.names" to show up & then printing them.
I wrote a .CMD file that loops waiting for a file to show up & then trying
to print it. But I don't know how to get it to pause. Ideally what it
would do is wait say 5 minutes, look for the file, if it could, print it,
if not, go to sleep again. But I don't know how to make it go to sleep, so
my .CMD just loops over & over again & consumes quite a chunk of cpu.
Any suggestions?
Adrian

Forgive me if I'm pointing out the obvious, but all you have to do
is "hold" the queue while you're printing, use the .SPL file for
whatever you want to use it for, then delete the job before
"releasing" the queue. You don't need a printer or even a parallel
port to pull this off. Is this kind of what you were looking for?
