WebCam Module / Uploader finally made available at:
http://www.warpseeme.com/
The packet contains a simple updater that runs nicely on even a
Geocities account. It has been 100% written according to Warp 4's
REXX TCP/IP instructions that ship with Warp 4. The packet also
contains a really nice Java updater which is courtesy of
http://www.anfyteam.com/ (By Fabio Ciucci).
The WarpSeeMe/2 page has been updated some time ago. Due to a lack of
time of the whole staff, I only now managed to sit down and post this
news at WarpCast.
For those that don't know yet, WarpSeeMe/2 is a project that stands
for developing a new videoconferencing program for OS/2 in order to
replace the good but discontinued ones we had such as InterCom/2 and
CUSeeMe/2.

The December 1999 edition of "The Warped Perspective" at OS/2
Headquarters is now at:
http://www.os2hq.com/
This month's edition discusses the Microsoft plan to eliminate DOS
(and perhaps Windows 3.X) support from Windows2000, cutting off the
market for thousands of small ISVs. The proposed solution? Have OS/2
ISVs license these apps and distribute them as OS/2-compatible
solutions, or license the source code and port the apps to OS/2, or
even encourage the "doomed" DOS and Windows ISV's to open-source
their applications.

This is an important notice for users of UniMaint!! If you have
UniMaint version 5.1 installed on a FAT partition and OS/2 installed
on a HPFS partition, you probably are not getting a good backup of
your Desktop directory structure when you do a Desktop Backup. Use
the link below for more details and how to make a short term fix.

Topic: Apache for OS/2
Date: Wednesday, December 8, 1999
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: IBM Building - 590 Madison Avenue, New York, NY
This will be a "make up" from our September meeting where our speaker
(our own Jeff Bakalchuck) couldn't make it because of a car
accident.
Well Jeff is back although he won't be doing his charity arm
wrestling anytime soon, he is more than able to show everyone how to
configure a web server with OS/2 and Apache.
Holiday festivities: Please feel free to bring some cookies and other
holiday pleasantments to make it a more joyous occasion for
everyone.
Auction: Unfortunately we will NOT be doing an auction in December.
We are looking into January to bring this event together. However, I
will bring a few items for a holiday giveaway.

Every Monday, I'll be reporting on OS/2-related items for sale on
http://www.ebay.com/ and the comp.os.os2.marketplace newsgroup. Even
if you're not thinking about buying anything OS/2 related, you might
find something that catches your interest.
On eBay, there are several copies of OS/2 2.x, Warp 3, Warp 4, and
Lotus applications available for sale, as well as several OS/2 books,
mostly for OS/2 2.x or Warp 3.
To keep things simple, I will only be reporting on "interesting"
items - stuff that doesn't appear most weeks.
This week we have: BackMaster 1.1a; some sort of Compaq server OS
installation CD; SPF PC; APC PowerChute Plus; HyperAccess 5;
BackupWiz; and AttachPak.
For programmers, we have: Borland C++ and SourceLink source code
processor.
On Yahoo, we have IBM Directory & Security Server; various versions
of OS/2 and some OS/2 books.
On comp.os.os2.marketplace, we have: DeScribe 5.0; BackMaster 1.1;
ArcSolo; Photo>Graphics; ColorWorks 2.0; and Brief. By the way, if
you've seen something interesting on c.o.o.marketplace and want more
information, please email the seller DIRECTLY instead of posting the
newsgroup. There's a lot of noise on this newsgroup, so please don't
add to it.
Those of you looking to sell your OS/2 related stuff, I strongly
recommend you put it on eBay and post an announcement on
comp.os.os2.marketplace. If you include the word "OS/2" in the title
of your description, I'll see it and include it in the next report.
If you're looking for OS/2 items on eBay, search on the phrase
("OS/2",OS2), including the parentheses.

The correct URL for full details on the new release is:

Brad Wardell has posted the binary of fixkit #2 for Object Desktop
2.0 to the newsgroup of the StarDock server:
news://news.stardock.com/stardock.os2.support
Although it is indicated that the file will be made available from
the Stardock web site, it does not appear to be listed there as of
this date (Dec. 9th).
From the README:
12/1/99
Unlike previous fixkits, this fixkit is really a 'hot fix' type fix.
We did not create the binary patches, and have only included changed
DLLs. To install, simply boot to a command prompt, save the previous
DLLs to a save directory (FixKit20.2), and copy the contents of this
zipfile to the Object Desktop 2.0 installation directory.
Changed files:
- OBJDCOMN.DLL
- OBJDCCEN.DLL
- OBJDEFLD.DLL
Fix List:
Enhanced Folder
- Create "New" instances feature does not work on a browsed folder.
New objects are created in original parent folder.
- New instances not getting proper size on initial open due to
toolbar.
- Details view not completely working on toolbar at times.
- When in browse mode and browsed into sub folder, some folder menus
not working properly: (create another, delete, etc.) when invoked
from the folder's menu (contained objects worked OK).
Control Center
- Fixed occassional SYS3178 errors in Object Netscan.
TODO:
- FLDR: Icons of browse (eg. use open of folder) folder disappearing
- FLDR: track menu changed for details switch, etc.
- FLDR: fix object rexx

SFX INFORMATION
The SFX Installer offers the first one file archive/installation tool
widely available on the OS/2 platform. It marries the installation
tool for your software and it's own setup tools into one friendly
package for point and click installation setups that are personalized
for your software. SFX allows you to build an archive in standard or
self-extracting format, with or without the installer.
There are no cryptic scripts to learn to write other than any
setupstrings (samples provided) you need to place folders and icons
on the desktop. The installation setup tool allows you to point and
click a complete setup. When you are satisfied with how the archive
should be setup you can save all the information and recall it when
needed. SFX will save and retrieve as many setups as you have disk
space for and will help the author of multiple programs to keep them
organized. It can also be used as a general zip file distribution
builder as well.
The SFX Installer includes several novel details for the software
distributer including:
1) Dll and help file placement (and tracking) into existing LIBPATH
and SET HELP directories so your user may avoid adding to these paths
and also avoid rebooting before usage.
2) An uninstallation script is written at install time specific to
the users installation that will, track all files your program has
installed and remove any WPS objects created at installation time.
This uninstall script can be modified if needed via a plugin.
3) Authors can make use of Plugin scripts to overcome any
installation limitations that your installations need to perform.
(examples included)
Although the installer is distributed as shareware through BMT Micro
(http://www.bmtmicro.com), we invite freeware authors to use the
installer free of charge as a small token of appreciation for their
selfless work. Please read the license for more details.

WarpZip is now available as version 2.4
Information, screenshots and fully functional copies of are
available at:
http://www.pillarsoft.net/warpzip.html
NEW IN THIS RELEASE
This release comes quickly on the heels of v2.3 but we have added a
new feature that we felt deserved to see the light of day. It is a
type of seamless install from zip archives. Double-clicking on any
install.exe or setup.exe in the viewer automatically sets the archive
up to do an installation. Afterward the user can press the "Clean up"
button to have WarpZip take care of the mess.
WARPZIP OVERVIEW
WarpZip is the latest in Zip and OS/2 "Packed" file management.
Beneath WarpZip's stunning interface you will find some revolutionary
and powerful functions that will save both time and effort and boost
your productivity.
The integration of a directory tree as part of the interface makes
unarchiving complete archives or just selected file(s) from an
archive to any directory as simple as a 3 inch drag and drop, to
ANYWHERE on your drives. If you don't have the directory you want,
create it! You can also open any folder from the directory tree for
drag and drop operations. Drag files into or out of archives. Delete
any directory or even complete directory trees from WarpZip!
DOWNLOAD PREPROCESSOR
No more manually selecting a directory when downloading from NS.
WarpZip's Download PreProcessor allows your browsing sessions to
sport one click downloads that obey your every whim. It will
selectively move your downloaded zip files to any directory you
choose, test them for integrity, virus test them and queue them up
for later review by WarpZip. All this is handled seamlessly in the
background while you spend your online time making your browser
session count. When you're offline, WarpZip will be waiting with the
list of files you've downloaded. It will automatically load them in
it's queue on startup and present you with any test results you may
have requested.
PACKED FILES?
OS/2 Packed file extensions can have "_" or "@" or no extension at
all. So how do you locate them? Better yet, how do you locate and see
what files are archived inside of them? We are unaware of any
software that will help you find those almost unrecognizable OS/2
packed files except WarpZip. Of course, dragging a file out of them
or viewing them is as easy as working with a zip archive.
SEARCH FACILITIES
WarpZip will search a directory, directory tree, hard disk or CD for
zip files as well as OS/2 packed files. It will add or delete files
from archives, view files in archives or you can test run them (to do
an installation, for example) and let WarpZip clean up after you. You
can test zip files or run virus scans, view bitmaps, grep, build self
extractors, copy, move, rename, delete... well... you get the
picture...
INSTALLATION DETAILS
During installation WarpZip will allow you to use existing paths for
dll's etc. and keep track of them for you. It will write an uninstall
script specific to your installation should you decide to remove the
program at a later date. No forgotten file clutter...
ERATTA
WarpZip licenses are available at BMT Micro ($29).
http://www.bmtmicro.com/
Please take this opportunity to download a fully functional copy from
our website and try everything out. The "Sample.zip" that opens
automatically on the first run will help get your feet wet but we
hope you will check into all the different search mechanisms in the
program too.

I'd like to announce the release of ConfigEdit/2 v1.5
ConfigEdit/2 is a config.sys database manager which can
auto-generate config.sys files from a database which can be either
imported or created by hand. It can be used to hold multiple
config.sys files and generate new ones. Also manages OS/2's recovery
choices!

After some conflicting information from NovaStor about potential OS/2
CD-R/W support, I inquired further and received the following letter
from NovaStor Technical Support:
Louis,
We have thoroughly researched the possibility of adding support for
CD-R/W drives under the OS/2 Warp operating system. Attempting to
use these drives with the current version of the NovaDisk
application provided unstable and faulty results, being unable to
provide a reliable backup or restore procedure. Consequently, we
have decided to discontinue any further development of a backup
program for the OS/2 platform.
We apologize for any inconvenience that this might cause.
Please note that we are still fully expecting to support the OS/2
Warp operating system with our future release of InstantRecovery.
This software will allow you to perform a disaster recovery backup
to CD-R/W media and allow the system to be recovered in case of a
critical failure from a floppy diskette or bootable CD-R/W.
We invite you to visit our beta forum to download and test this new
software. The beta forum can be reached on our Internet site on the
Technical Support pages. Provide the required information and be
sure to add in the comment field "Authorized by CK" (non-authorized
request forms will be declined). After downloading the beta
version, please evaluate the software and return your comments or
questions via email. We will be glad to hear from you and your
input to make the software even better.
