Today Brian Smith released the first beta of EverBlue, the XLib-PM
implementation for OS/2 which allows you to compile Xlib (Unix/Linux)
applications as native PM applications.
The beta is not really usable for endusers but developers can use it
to compile PM versions of X-Applications. There is just a small demo
included so maybe it does not make sense to download it now if you
are not a developer.
Source code of this beta drop is also included in the package, just
install it. If you want to support this project you can subscribe to
the EverBlue mailing list at Egroups, we still need a lot of support
because the project is not yet complete. I will set up a CVS server
at Netlabs as soon as we decided how to organise the structure of the
source. Informations about CVS will be posted to the EverBlue
mailing list.
Everblue mailing list:
http://www.egroups.com/group/everblue-dev/
Get the file from: (self installing exe-file)
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/everblue/everblue.exe
BTW: I just wrote the new database backend for OS/2 Netlabs this
week, we hope to be online in about a month! There will be a lot of
great changes and the content will finaly be much more up to date.

A new version of Theseus/2 Was released at:
http://ps.software.ibm.com/pbin-usa-ps/getobj.pl?/pdocs-usa/fixnews.html#thes
It fixes problems with FixPak 12 and the newer Warp 3 FixPaks.
For those who don't know, Theseus/2 is a program for monitoring how
much RAM certain applications use, and it's really good for finding
memory leaks.

On Oct 2, 1999 I published a bulletin on the Focus on OS/2 What's
New? page regarding IBM's new policy regarding Software Choice and
the new price of $249 per year. Although I received this information
from an IBM representative, it may have been incorrect.
Last night (October 6) I received an email from Al Burke, Marketing
Management, OS/2 Business Unit, NCSD which gave very detailed
information including the fact that the price of $249 was for a TWO
YEAR subscription. He also detailed what software the subscription
covers. For more information, please see:
http://os2.about.com/library/blnews.htm
I apologize for the confusion caused by this error.

About two months ago OS/2 was first spotted on the deja rating OS
page:
http://www.deja.com/rate/list_items.xp?CID=12029&PCID=11878
It was somewhere at the bottom of the list. Good news, its now at the
top and there are more OS/2 voters then Linux voters! This is what
somebody wrote in a newsgroup.
1. OS/2 continues to forge ahead of the rest in the
deja.com OS user ratings. not only in overall points, but,
note this, also in terms of numbers of user/voters, taking
an increasing lead over even Linux. (Hint to IBM: clear the
sleep out of your eyes.)
2. The sheen is wearing off Win2000, as initial user
enthusiasm is tempered a bit by newer, possibly more
balanced, voters. It's dropped back one point, and Mac7 has
moved up a couple of notches as more Mac users get in on
the act. Result: *ALL the M$ operating systems are now at
the bottom of the log. Which is not surprising. (Hint to
IBM: wake up.)

SciTech's Universal Display Driver to Be Bundled with IBM's
E-Business Solutions
Chico, California - October 11, 1999 -- SciTech Software, Inc. today
announced that IBM has licensed a special version of SciTech Display
Doctor, which will be distributed by IBM as the primary display
driver for all of IBM's OS/2 Warp based operating systems, including
the Warp Client, Workspace On Demand and Warp Server for e-business.
This marks the first time that any common PC operating system, either
desktop or server, will include a hardware accelerated, universal
display driver as part of the base operating system. Until now,
operating system vendors have had to rely on overtaxed graphics
hardware vendors to provide software driver support, resulting in
inconsistent driver quality and infrequent or non-existent updates
for the installed base of graphics hardware.
"We're proud to partner with SciTech Software, because they are a
leader in graphics device drivers," said Cheng-Fong Shih, IBM
Business Line Manager for OS/2. "OS/2, with SciTech's universal
display driver technology, will provide our customers with a timely
and stable platform for their mission critical applications,
regardless of the display hardware they choose to use."
SciTech Display Doctor provides true plug and play capability by
detecting the graphics hardware installed and configuring itself
automatically. It is not necessary for a user to determine what type
of graphics hardware they have, locate the correct driver, fumble
with install disks or use configuration utilities - it is all handled
automatically by SciTech Display Doctor. The user can even swap out a
graphics card or monitor and SciTech Display Doctor will dynamically
configure itself for the newly installed hardware. These features
make supporting IBM systems in the field much easier for IBM
customers.
"As an IBM customer we are pleased that they are working with SciTech
to provide a universal plug and play solution for graphics
hardware.", said Andy Finkel, VP of Software at German computer
manufacturer Met@box AG, "It shows that IBM is really supporting
their customers."
As part of this agreement, SciTech and IBM are working together to
improve the OS/2 Warp platform's core "GRADD" display driver
architecture to increase graphics performance and compatibility. The
IBM PC Company, which manufactures IBM's personal computer hardware,
is also closely involved in this effort to ensure maximum
compatibility with IBM branded hardware.
"The SciTech driver technology licensed by IBM is the culmination of
years of work by SciTech. We used all of our experience with driver
development to create an architecture that is fast, scalable, and
extremely compatible," said Kendall Bennett, SciTech's Director of
Engineering.
IBM will offer SciTech Display Doctor/se for OS/2 Warp free of
charge, directly to its customers. It will be available for
downloaded from the IBM's web site and will be bundled with future
operating system updates. SciTech also markets SciTech Display Doctor
Professional for OS/2 Warp as an upgrade for users who need more
advanced display features. Fully functional trial versions of SciTech
Display Doctor Professional for OS/2 Warp and other SciTech products
are available for download at:
http://www.scitechsoft.com/
SciTech products are available directly from SciTech Software by
calling (800) 486-4823 (in the U.S. and Canada) or (530) 894-8400.

PMView has been the #1 OS/2 graphics application for years.
Until now, OS/2 users have been happily viewing, printing,
converting, and editing their bitmap images with PMView 1.0.
All that will change at Warpstock '99, when PMView 2.0 is
released!
New features of PMView 2.0 include: support for even more
image formats, significant user interface enhancements, and
a Windows version. PMView's load and view code is fast! It
was written by Peter Nielsen in C++ and uses carefully
selected algorithms for maximum speed performance. PMView
also loads several new image formats, including new
undocumented OS/2 bitmap formats such as the ones that
DeScribe creates.
PMView sports a new look, with a toolbar and a new file-open
dialog box.
So, to be one of the first to see the exciting new release
of the #1 OS/2 image viewer, be at the premier OS/2 event of
the century, Warpstock '99 this October 16 and 17 in
Atlanta, GA.

professional-looking web pages.
Virginia has designed and maintained web pages for the best, and is a
highly-demanded lecturer on web design. For those of you that can't
make Warpstock, this presentation will definitely be a "can't miss".
And, no doubt, we'll all be talking about everything that happened at
our big shindig, Warp Expo West (http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest/index.html)
on September 18th.
After the presentation we'll have Q&A to get your computer problems
resolved. Then a raffle and the Saturday SIG meetings:
General Interest Group - will look at Dialog Enhancer and SciTech
Display Doctor.
Programming SIG - to be determined. Why not come and see what we have
in store?
Afterwards: No-host lunch and friendly chat at TGI Friday's across the
street or another local restaurant.
Internet SIG chats happen several times each week. Join them! (For
further info, go to http://www.scoug.com/chat/index.html).
OS/2 Help Desk on Oct. 18th, 7 PM PDT:
SCOUG holds a Help Desk chat every Monday of the month (see above
paragraph) except one - and that's when the in-person Help Desk
happens. Bring your computers and questions to Heritage Christian
High School on Oct. 18 for hands-on help with your system.
(Note: This month's Networking and Sundial SIGs will not be held on
October 18th and 21st, respectively. Stay tuned; we expect both to be
back in action in November)
When, where, and how to get there:
SCOUG will be meeting on Saturday, October 16, at 9:00 AM (PDT) at the
IBM offices located in Plaza Tower, 600 Anton Bl., Costa Mesa, CA, on the
2nd floor. From I-405, exit onto Bristol northbound (one exit NW of the
I-405/Hwy 55 interchange). Turn right on Anton Blvd (the first signal north
of I-405). Go east 2 signals and turn right (you will see a TGI Fridays'
on your right, where our after-meeting lunch will be at). Park in the
open-air lot to your left. Plaza Tower is on a diagonal from the
open-air parking lot.
For the OS/2 Help Desk on October 18:
The Heritage Christian High School in Anaheim is at 2530 W. La Palma Ave.
It is on the south side of La Palma Ave. (about 200 ft. E of Magnolia) on the
property of Grace Baptist Church. There is a 2-story office building close to
La Palma Ave. with the address of 2528 up near the roof. Turn in (south)
there.
Drive all the way to the back and park along the chain-link fence.
NOTE: There is a lot of freeway construction north of the school on I-5 and
the
91 freeways; some on/off ramps may be closed and/or have detours. Check
the SCOUG web site for updates, and leave yourself plenty of time to find
our new SIG meeting location.
Further information (including driving directions) can be found on the
SCOUG web site at http://www.scoug.com. The driving directions
(http://www.scoug.com/directions.html) also include maps for the general
meeting and the Help Desk that you can print off as needed.
Come and join us!

Visual SlickEdit is one the best programmer's editors out there, and
they've supported OS/2 ever since the beginning. The latest version,
4.0, is extremely powerful.
I just got this email from MicroEdge:
"I am sorry to say that due to the low demand of the
OS/2 Version of Visual SlickEdit compared to other
versions of our product, MicroEdge had to make the
decision not to release version 5.0 for OS/2.
However, we will continue to offer Visual SlickEdit
v4.0 to users of OS/2."
Fortunately, this isn't such a big deal, as it's quite common to use
older versions of SlickEdit (I used 2.0 until 4.0 came out). Also,
I've seen the feature list of 5.0, and I would have called it 4.1.

Perfect Niche Software, Inc., will be a participant in the Vendor Pro
shareware exhibit at Warpstock 99 in Atlanta, GA, October 16-17,
1999. SMACK! for OS/2, will be demonstrated for (and a special
discount will be offered to) those attending Warpstock 99.
SMACK! is a fully Workplace Shell aware OS/2 application. It takes
advantage of OS/2's many benefits, from drag-and-drop to
multithreading. The application uses templates, and REXX is its
native macro language. Like OS/2, Smack! has a consistent,
predictable user interface. If you're familiar with the OS/2
Workplace Shell (WPS), then you'll be comfortable with Smack! in no
time.
Smack! lets you print labels on any printer supported by OS/2, and
supports almost every predefined label format. It lets you use
varying fonts, color, and graphics on your labels, and control the
object placement with precision. You can import data from several
data formats, or drag and drop data from other popular OS/2
applications. Smack! supports an infinite Undo, making it easy for
you to experiment until you get your labels just right.
An extensive list of Smack! features is located at:
http://www.perfectniche.com/html/features.html
Smack! version 2.0 is being developed by Master Programmer, Bill
Schindler, and is nearing completion. Smack! v. 2.0 will be available
as a FREE upgrade to all licensed users of Smack! v. 1.0 or greater.
Perfect Niche Software has attended Warpstock for the past two years
and regret that we will not be in attendance this year. We appreciate
the opportunity of participating in the Vendor Pro software exhibit
and extend our wishes of success to Warpstock 98.
Stop by the Vendor Pro software exhibit and see the demonstration of
Smack! and be sure to pick up one of our flyers for complete details.

Sundial To Fly Key Technical Staff To Warpstock
"Sundial Has The Answers" All Day Long In Atlanta!
Sundial Systems will bring its key technical team to
Warpstock in a major goodwill gesture of support for the
OS/2 community.
"Our tech people are adept at creating systems that go
together fast and work cleanly," says Randell Flint,
President of Sundial. "We want every single OS/2 user to
bring us the new projects they're working on, the new
systems they're creating, and let us try to come up with the
fastest, most cost-effective solution that's available. If
it includes our products, fine, but we'll give you system
solutions no matter what software you're using. We want to
show everyone, everywhere, that 'Sundial Has The Answers'!"
Dan Kulp is the development manager for Sundial's Mesa 2
spreadsheet software. "Yes, I'm flying to Atlanta as part
of the Sundial Has The Answers technical program," says Dan,
"and I'm also giving a presentation on Sunday. I've seen so
many different uses of Mesa 2 in ways that you wouldn't
expect, things like financial planning, web and network
statistics analysis, stock options trading, chemical
modeling, that I feel that I can really help everybody who
needs some assistance in figuring out how to design a
complete system or a single set of spreadsheets. Besides,
I really like to help people, and this is a wonderful
opportunity to pass my experiences along to others."
The Sundial development manager for Relish, Rollin White,
will also be in Atlanta to add his extensive knowledge to
Sundial Has The Answers. "That's our original product,"
says Rollin. "There are so many ways to keep track of
schedules and time-based data in Relish that people who are
longtime users still come to me and say, 'I didn't know you
could do that!'. I'll be at Warpstock to announce and give
a presentation on our newest product, and the rest of the
time I'm going to help every single OS/2 user I can talk
with on their plans and strategies. I don't really mind
what software you finally choose, I just want to make sure
that every system that's planned around OS/2 software and
networking is designed for a fast rollout and easy
maintenance."
And Randell Flint himself will participate in Sundial Has
The Answers. "That's always been our thrust," says Randell.
"That's always been my interest. I want to give people
software solutions that will then give them answers. That's
why I wrote Relish, our first product. That's why we now
have Rover Pack, DBExpert, Mesa 2, Clearlook and a brand new
product as well. Software is just a tool to give you the
answers you need, and that's what I want Sundial to be - a
place you come to when you need answers. That's why I'm
bringing the Sundial technical staff to Warpstock, so we can
help OS/2 users create some great solutions with any
software they want. We've seen so many different projects
that we're bound to have knowledge that others can use.
It's our way of saying thanks to OS/2 - 'Sundial Has The
Answers'".
Sundial Has The Answers will run all day, every day at
Warpstock. Bring your questions, bring your plans, bring
your dreams and future visions. Sundial has the answers.

A new CSD update to FileStar/2, the premium quality, versatile PM
file manager for OS/2, is available for all users who own version
2.0. You must have an existing install of FS/2 to apply this update.
The most significant change is in the directory copy/move functions.

FileStar/2 is a commercial product and a full featured, uninhibited
-- but time limited -- trialware version of this same update will be
available shortly for users to see what it can do.

Every Monday, I'll be reporting on OS/2-related items for sale on
http://www.ebay.com/
and the comp.os.os2.marketplace newsgroup. Even if you're not
thinking about buying anything OS/2 related, you might find something
that catches your interest.
Special Note: I will be attending Warpstock this weekend. Therefore,
there will be no eBay report next week. Also, if you're looking for a
deal on REAL OS/2 software that is still supported by the vendor
(unlike most of the stuff you see on eBay), you should go to
Warpstock, because several vendors will be offering discounts on
their products to Warpstock attendees.
If you don't know what Warpstock is, check out:
http://www.warpstock.org
And try to get out of the cave every now and then.
On eBay, there are several copies of OS/2 2.x, Warp 3, Warp 4, and
Lotus applications available for sale, as well as several OS/2 books,
mostly for OS/2 2.x or Warp 3.
We have this week: MS SQL server for OS/2, Colorwork 1+, GalCiv 1 and
2 plus other stardock software, Drive Image (for the billionth time),
Seagate Backup, Backmaster, an old DeScribe manual, and Comm
Manager/2.
For collectors we have: two lapel pins, a "Ready for OS/2" award, an
OS/2 vs NT videotape, a keychain, a luggage tag, a coffee mug, and a
t-shirt.
For programmers, we have: Borland Turbo Asm for OS/2, Borland C++
books, DevCon 8, and two copies of C Set+++ 2.0.
I am always amazed at the number of people trying to sell copies of
OS/2 2.0. I'm sure none of those people actually read this report,
but if anyone knows of any situation where a person has actually sold
a copy of OS/2 2.0 via eBay, I'd love to hear about it.
On comp.os.os2.marketplace, someone is selling Dualstor 3.0 and a
flaky Ditto tape backup drive. Who in their right mind would purchase
a backup device they know has problems? I guess it takes all kinds...
Those of you looking to sell your OS/2 related stuff, I strongly
recommend you put it on eBay and post an announcement on
comp.os.os2.marketplace. If you include the word "OS/2" in the title
of your description, I'll see it and include it in the next report.
If you're looking for OS/2 items on eBay, search on the phrase
("OS/2",OS2), including the parentheses.

You'll miss your chance to buy tickets for the "Warpstock Magic
Moments" Saturday Night Spectacular if you don't click over to:

and buy them.
That's because the online ticket sales server gets shut down
Wednesday afternoon at 3 pm EDT.
150 Warpstock guests have already purchased their "Magic Moments"
tickets. They'll enjoy a Warpstock dinner in the banquet hall.
They'll watch the professional stage performance of the Comedy
Magician. They'll wish that _you_ were there to enjoy the evening
with them.
You'll be at Warpstock Atlanta this weekend? Then sign up for
"Warpstock Magic Moments" too! You'll get the fun, the food and the
fanfare that makes a Warpstock weekend well worthwhile.
Online tickets are yours until Wednesday afternoon. If you show up
Friday you can buy them at the early registration booth from 3 to 5
p.m. Or you can have the tickets held for you by sending an email to
Judy McDermott at bri@gt-online.com (and don't forget to say how
many). Tickets by email must be received by Friday 5 pm because
that's when the banquet chef orders the edibles.
Warpstock doesn't come along that often, so indulge a little. Take
yourself out this Saturday night to "Warpstock Magic Moments".

Warpstock's Vendor Pro wants you to have their hardware
Having a hard time finding high-end yet affordable OS/2-compatible
computers? Indelible Blue and Warpstock's Vendor Pro might have just
the answer for you.
During Warpstock '99, three computers from Indelible Blue will be on
display for auction at the Vendor Pro booth. Warpstock attendees can
view the computers, with OS/2 and several OS/2 applications installed
and running, and then place a bid. At the end of the show, the high
bidders can then purchase the systems and take them home.
Vendor Pro is the brand new feature of Warpstock where OS/2 software
vendors who cannot attend Warpstock can still have their products
demonstrated. Warpstock attendees can visit the Vendor Pro booth, see
dozens of OS/2 applications in action, and then purchase them --
often at special Warpstock prices. With Vendor Pro, OS/2 users have
access to far more OS/2 software than ever before!
Indelible Blue is the #1 OS/2 software and hardware reseller, with
the biggest selection of OS/2 software anywhere. Indelible Blue
offers PCs that are guaranteed to be compatible with your operating
system of choice, whether it's OS/2, Linux, or any version of
Windows. Indelible Blue will even preload your selected operating
systems in any configuration you choose. By choosing Indelible Blue,
your computer will be ready to use as soon as you take it out of the
box.

I may have the possibility to make an OS/2 port of the very
extraordinarily good MP3 encoder known as AMP 1.0. Unfortunately,
Brian Litman, president of PlayMedia (www.playmediasystems.com) needs
to know if "there are serious, "industrial" applications for an OS/2
MP3 port [of AMP 1.0]".
AMP 0.76 was used in many MP3 players before it became commercial.
AMP 1.0 is even better than XAudio. It sounds great and uses little
CPU time.
If anyone knows anybody interested in using OS/2 AMP in a profitable
product, please let _me_ know at guardia@cam.org.

Sundial Expands Warped Jeopardy, Announces Celebrity Contestants
The dazzling Warped Jeopardy! live game show produced by
Sundial Systems and scheduled for Sunday at Warpstock has been
expanded with new sound, new video clips and new multimedia.
Warped Jeopardy! debuted last month on the west coast "and was
great then" says producer Randell Flint, "but now it's even
better."
The on-stage contestants are three well-known OS/2 users of
high stature. Author David Moskowitz of OS/2 Warp Unleashed
fame will be first to tackle the questions as Sundial poses the
answers. OS/2 advocate Judy McDermott, driving force behind
VOICE and the Warpstock Board, brings her OS/2 knowledge to the
front of the Warped Jeopardy! theater. And Larry Finkelstein,
respected OS/2 developer and President of Warpstock Inc., holds
down chair number three.
The stage show is bigger, better, louder and brighter. The
multimedia is greatly expanded "with more full-motion video
playbacks, tighter production, an enhanced projection system for
our expanded trivia list" says Flint. "We've rounded up some
absolutely great clips from the tape vaults of OS/2 nostalgia,"
he adds. The entire multimedia show is controlled by a single
machine running Warp 4, a custom system created by Sundial.
"And we've doubled the amount of audience participation, since
we found that everyone likes a chance at the questions when we
give them the answers."
Warped Jeopardy! is based on the Jeopardy television show.
The computer driven game board offers different topic
categories, the host gives an answer, and the contestants must
give a correspondingly correct question. In effect, the three
celebrity guests have the questions and Sundial has the answers.
"This is meant to be a fun time," says Sundial President
Randell Flint. "The Sundial crew and I have spent several
months creating Warped Jeopardy! so that major OS/2 gatherings
such as Warpstock can have a unique, enjoyable and OS/2-oriented
special attraction. The people who come to Warpstock are deeply
involved with OS/2, and we've created an entire multimedia
gameboard with some truly wonderful and delightful trivia
questions for the three Warped experts we've scheduled for
Sunday."
Sundial's Warped Jeopardy! show starts right after Sunday
lunch. Seating is limited and you'll need an admission ticket,
so pick up your free tickets early at Sundial's exhibitor booth,
where "Sundial Has The Answers".
Sundial Systems supplies OS/2 users with a number of
high-quality software products covering spreadsheet, database,
desktop enhancement, time management, word processing and email
needs and consisting of Mesa 2, Rover Pack, Relish, DBExpert,
Clearlook and a new product to be announced at Warpstock.
Grab an early seat with a good view and watch these three
celebrity contestants guess the questions as Sundial has the
answers.

After the Stardock/IBM announcement regarding an "Aurora" based
client, I stated that Serenity Systems remains interested in a
similar project. But our client requirements are a significant
departure from Stardock's.
On Sunday (10/17) morning,8AM, at Warpstock, Kim Cheung will discuss
our vision of an new OS/2 Super Client. There is no doubt that an
Aurora based client is capable of playing multiple significant roles
and the leading client platform in the industry... everything from a
general business desktop to the "PC farm" doing financial analysis or
"search engine" tasks on the Ineternet.
More information can be found on the Warpstock site:

The SysBar/2 Utility Set is back after a year of silence!
This new release (considered to be a maintenance release) contains
various bug fixes, including the MS Exchange Server compatibility and
a number of new features such as dynamic cell colorization schemes
and more application support for the Pipe Monitor!
Now you can paint your system information cells using any colors you
like! Moreover, these cells are now able to change their color
dynamically as their contents reach certain values. For example, you
can paint your swap file red when it grows too big. Or make the mail
peeker appear dark grey when there's no mail, but shine as gold when
the mail arrives.
Three more applications are supported now by the Pipe Monitor. You
can watch your AICQ client status, SETI@HOME completion percentage
and monitor your motherboard and CPU temperature, voltage and other
important parameters with 19 pipes supplied by the ThermoProtect
environment monitor.
There's also a "lazy shrink" feature which prevents frequently
updated monitor cells to grow bigger and smaller too often, and a
pop-up track list menu for easy track access in CD Player.
This new version is currently available at Hobbes and at the SysBar/2
support site:
ftp://sysbar:sysbar@ftp.lab321.ru/sbr2_017.zip
http://www.lab321.ru/~dip/sysbar2/sbr2_017.zip
SysBar/2 Utility Set is a high quality OS/2 product which has been
developed and supported for over 4 years. The main idea of the
project was to design a product which will save your so valuable
Desktop space and system resources bringing as much functionality and
flexibility as possible. The average size of a SysBar/2 component
doesn't exceed 30 or 40 Kb. Everything is highly configurable and
easily fits in any corner of your screen.
It only takes seconds to fall in love with SysBar/2 components and
you'll wonder how could you live without them.
Components are:
- the Clock, does nothing other than displaying the curent time and
date (what else could be expected?);
- the CD Player, which plays your audio CDs even if you don't have
multimedia support installed. There are only basic controls, four
time display modes and no bells and whistles;
- the Task Switcher, a brilliant tiny task switcher which allows you
to manage all your applications with just a mouse click;
- the Pipe Monitor, a system information utility and named pipe
listener. It displays tons of dynamically updated system
information and also allows you to add your own data sources
using named pipes which makes it highly expandable and useful
for the needs of your own applications, remote monitoring and so
on.
The last thing which makes the product unbeatable is the price. All
the above comes ABSOLUTELY FREE! Support is available via email:
sysbar@lab321.ru.

Updated demos of FileStar/2 and UniMaint are available at:
http://www.filestar.com/pages/download.html
The UniMaint demo is 'UniSafe', a UniMaint that can do most
functions but does not change anything -- which is a good
way to see the features and evaluate your INI files.
The FileStar/2 demo is the latest GA version totally
uninhibited in any manner, except it will die 30 days after
installation.
If you don't use these programs, you ought to try them.
FileStar/2 has many users that claim it is indispensible
when working with their files in everyday use. And UniMaint
provides an easy way to back up your Desktop and keep the
INI files cleaned out!

Serenity Systems International of Lewisville, TX, and Orion Solutions
of Victoria, Australia, have entered into an agreement which allows
Orion to manufacture and market Managed Client(r) products in
Australia. The agreement includes all Serenity Systems products,
including CTI, but the initial focus will be the Managed Client(r) as
administered by WiseManager(r). In addition to OEM activities, Orion
will also be permitted to develop a channel of authorized service
oriented VARs.
Bob St.John, Business Development Manager of SSI, said "We're
delighted with Orion's technical skills and marketing philosophy. We
have had requests from potential channel partners and users who are
participating in our Evaluation Program. Our relationship with Orion
allows us to develop an infrastructure to support these requests."
The first activity to be undertaken by Orion will be a Managed Client
and WiseManager presentation to the South Australia OS/2 User Group
on October 28 in Adelaide:
http://www.os2.org.au/home.html
More information about Orion Solutions is available at:
http://www.orion-solutions.com.au/
Serenity Systems is presently focused on support for Warpstock, but
is in negotiations with other companies regarding distribution in
other geographies. Kim Cheung, Executive Director of SSI, said, "OS/2
is our Managed Client platform. Interest in Managed Clients is strong
... so you have to say that interest in OS/2 remains strong."

Visualizer PE will be demonstrated at Warpstock this weekend (October
16th and 17th) in Atlanta, GA.
Visualizer is a data presentation application which is well
integrated with DB2. Data can be created, modified and combined, and
presented as charts, reports, and statistical analyses. Visualizer
also includes a Workplace Shell environment for prototyping and
creating applications.
Visualizer was one of the first applications available on OS/2. It
was released in August 1988 by IBM as PAS or Personal AS. ASTRAC took
over the support, and development rights in 1997, and have produced
monthly new releases, a new version V5. and a the newly announced
Personal Edition VisPE,
See Visualizer PE demonstrated at Warpstock 99 and get one of a
limited number of copies on CD (at the special price of $50)!
See:

One of the highlights of the recent Warp Expo West was the Vendor 100
program. Not only did it show the richness of applications available
to OS/2 users, it also demonstrated OS/2's robust desktop
capability.
At Warp Expo West, the Vendor 100 exhibit ran on Managed Clients(r)
from Serenity Systems. We thought it was such an effective
demonstration of what a Managed Client can provide that we asked the
Southern California OS/2 User Group if we could reprise the exhibit
at Warpstock.
So... if you missed Warp Expo West, here is an opportunity to see
this powerful demonstration of OS/2 power and the range of OS/2
applications available. It will be featured in the Serenity Systems
pavilion in the exhibit area.
In addition to the Vendor 100 exhibit, Serenity Systems will also be
working with the Warpstock 99 Vendor Pro exhibit.
Managed Clients by Serenity Systems are a superior way to deliver
applications to users. Responsive, secure, reliable, with an ease of
adminsitration and an ability to control costs which is unmatched in
the industry. The proof behind these statements will be there for all
to see at the Serenity Systems pavilion.

Atlanta, GA has been the site of many spectacular events:
the '96 Summer Olympics, the Super Bowl, political and
business conventions, and occasions with world leaders.
Now, however, the city seems to be holding its breath,
waiting for the event that will once again set the city
on fire: Warpstock '99.
This is the event that we have all be waiting for. No
other event will attract more OS/2 users to this city.
No other event will celebrate a full weekend of Peace,
Love, and OS/2. Yes, this is the event of a lifetime,
and Atlanta is proud to be hosting it.
Fall brings a stillness to this town, a quietness to the
metropolis whose roots are southern, but whose reach is
international. And in that quietness, we wait with great
anticipation for our chance to say "Welcome to the city
of Atlanta". So come, be a part of this place, this time,
this show. Warpstock '99 and Atlanta welcomes you.
Don't miss the premier OS/2 event of the century,
Warpstock '99 Atlanta.
OS/2 users from around the world will meet October 16-17
in Atlanta. Visit http://www.warpstock.org for the complete
information about this very special OS/2 event.

File Freedom, a powerful freeware file manager for OS/2, has just
received a small Y2K update so that file sorting order will be
maintained in the new millenium.
You can find the new package as "filef202.zip" on Hobbes, or on my
web page at http://www.kw.igs.net/~brhenry.
Also, for the first time the source code is now available. Now you can
add all those weird little features you wanted!!! So far the source code
is found only on my web page, but feel free to distribute it elsewhere.

Hi! Tired of the comets from Netscape? You can change
them! The Throbbers archive is now online.
We have converted the animations of the famous
WebExplorer animations (150+) and are awaiting your
creations. You can find it here:
http://www.os2forum.or.at/TeamOS2/English/Special/Throbbers/
(It can be reached only directly using the link
above)
You can preview the animations as animated GIFs
(and you should have JavaScript enabled).
The site is currently only in English, a German
version will follow. The site is currently "beta",
more enhancements will be added later.
If you have animations you want to be added to the
archive, please email them to
'e9125065@student.tuwien.ac.at'. More detailed
instructions will be on the pages in the future.
Thanks to Micheal Kaply (IBM) and Tim Martin for
their help.
Please note that this feature works only with the
OS/2 version of Netscape. For support of the other
platforms please contact Netscape directly.
Best regards,
TeamOS/2 Austria

PillarSoft announces their participation at Warpstock 99 in
Atlanta, GA on the weekend of October 16-17. Pillarsoft is
an independant software vendor that specializes in software
solutions for OS/2.
The big news for Warpstock 99? We will be releasing TWO new
solutions for OS/2 users!
Our newest application should be of interest to personal
and business users alike. It is tentatively called "Data
Shield" and provides secure deletion of all sensitive data.
It is important to know that merely deleting data does not
actually remove the information from your hard drive. It
can still be recovered and your sensitive information may
be compromised.
Data Shield offers to overwrite selected data before
deletion so prying eyes will not see what you don't want
them to see. It offers a choice of overwriting X number of
times before deletion or delete to DOD specification. Data
Shield will handle all freespace on a drive, a complete
drive, TMP & TEMP directories, \DELETE directories,
individual files, individual directories, directory trees,
as well as cleanup of the Netscape cache and its history
trails. Screenshots of Data Shield and some of its skins
are available at:
http://www.pillarsoft.net/pre_secure.html
As is the norm for most PillarSoft applications, much of
Data Shield's work is point and click, saving you the
drudgery of locating your "TMP" directory or
"Netscape.hst", for example, manually. As much work as
possible is ferreted out by Data Shield automatically when
the user asks for it.
Data Shield will be available for $25 for personal use and
will be discounted at Warpstock ($20). Site licenses will
also be available.
PillarSoft Status Center (PSC) was originally an "in-house"
tool to track dll's loaded for each running process. As
needs arose, the application gelled to provide most info
pstat gives in an easily browsed format as well as adding a
switch list, process killer, swapfile size, free RAM, total
available virtual memory, machine uptime, zombie processes,
the list goes on... Because of the important utility it has
shown here, we are making it available to you. A "squished"
screenshot is viewable at:
http://www.pillarsoft.net/pre_psc.html
PSC will be priced at a moderate $15 for personal use and
we will be offering a discounted $10 price at Warpstock.
Site licenses will also be available.
We look forward to meeting many of you at Warpstock and
will be offering discounts on our other software over the
Warpstock weekend also. Our booth will be located within
the friendly confines of the Serenity Pavilion as you walk
in the door. Stop in, say "Hello" and take a peek at the
other solutions we offer.

Installer ShowTime/2 and the Enhanced E Editors. The PillarSoft web

I talked to some people from StarOffice at Warpstock Europe and they
told me that they have a serious problem with the OS/2 port of it.
Until now they used to compile the code with VACPP 3.65 on OS/2 but
now they use "namespaces" in the code and because VACPP 4.0 does not
support commandline compiling, they can't compile it on OS/2 anymore
(the project is simply too big for the VACPP 4.0 workframe). On Linux
they use the Pentium optimized version of the GNU compiler and they
tried the same on OS/2. But unfortunately there is a problem in the
OS/2 port:
Taken from http://www.goof.com/pcg/os2/#Bugs:
Known bugs:
1. emxomf now traps (sometimes?) when compiling with -g (debug)
switch. This is due to new format of debugging info (DWARF2). I do
not know how to fix this. Use A.OUT format (no -Zomf) for debugging
and pmgdb.
Solution: This happens because pgcc uses new stabs format
(-gstabs+) while emxomf understands only the standard stabs
debugging info. I've partialy fixed this by adding a tiny
command-line preprocessor to gcc. It scans argv[] and looks for
both -Zomf and -g# where # is a number. If it finds one, it
replaces -g# by -gstabs#. This doesn't always help, however.
---
As you can see this is a limitation in EMX. We now have to find
people who are able to fix this (which will not be an easy task I
think). We are already in contact with Eberhard Mattes but we need
more support. If you think you are able to fix this, please get in
contact with Oliver Braun <obr@stardivision.de>. Please reply ONLY if
you really think you can help StarDivision.
A StarOffice without debug informations can not be tested and if
noone can fix this limitation, Sun can not provide a new version for
OS/2! So you see this is important for the future of StarOffice on
OS/2.
Thanks for your support
Adrian Gschwend

New Junk Spy Software Becomes Your Email Connection
Junk Spy is the newest OS/2 software product from Sundial
Systems.
"It's new technology and it intercepts your junk email,"
says Randell Flint, President of Sundial. "You connect your
favorite email program to Junk Spy, and Junk Spy then connects
to your mail server. Junk Spy sees your email before your
mail program does and watches for any trash messages. We've
been in development on this technology for two years."
There's a lot more inside Junk Spy than just a set of
filters. "We also supply a database of spammer clues which we
continually update, the same as an antivirus program," says
Flint. "We watch the message titles, the contents of the
messages and the information in the headers. We've tested and
tested and tested. Spam messages are no match for Junk Spy."
Junk Spy is important technology, and a seminar on the
product's underlying logic plus a demonstration of the software
is scheduled for Saturday at Warpstock.
"I'm speaking on the technology we developed during the
creation of Junk Spy," says Rollin White, Development Manager
for Junk Spy at Sundial. "We'll cover the methods that Junk
Spy uses to connect between your email program and the mail
server, the research we did to make the product easy to use,
and of course the Junk Spy engine itself that uses the
database of rules and knowledge that catches the spam
messages. We paid particular attention to the problem of
'false hits', since we don't want mail you are really
interested in to be misidentified as junk."
Junk Spy can be fine tuned as much as the user desires.
The Junk Spy control panel lets you adjust the individual
detectors inside it, and you can define exceptions such as
the acceptance of any spam messages that contain the string
"OS/2". You can even create your own detectors. The user
keeps total control of exactly how trash messages are handled.
And the Junk Spy database can update automatically if the
user chooses. "We've set up monitoring facilities to search
for new kinds of junk mail," adds Flint. "Our database gets
better and better, and you can set Junk Spy to automatically
update from our database. That's a user option. Plus, Junk
Spy also uses the Realtime Blackhole List of known spam
origination sites."
Sundial has the answer for the world's nastiest spammers,
and that answer is Junk Spy.
Bring Junk Spy into your own office to watch over your
email. Let it be your own personal secret agent, spying on
your incoming mail for the dastardly junk that steals your
time. Junk Spy will do a quick and easy 007 on the trash you
don't want in your neighborhood.
Sundial wants you to fire up Junk Spy and get back to using
email the way you want it to be - in your control and
well-protected from the dregs of spammerworld.
