32bits Online (http://www.32bitsonline.com) is running a
poll for site visitors. If you are developing a mission
critical application, you may indicate which OS is the
target. So far, Linux has 65%, NT just over 10% and OS/2
just under 10% with 275 respondents.
This is not an advocacy poll. But, if the shoe fits ...
developers should participate so an accurate representation
of OS/2 as a mission critical platform can be .. projected.

Greetings everyone... :)
I have just finished ThermoProtect V1.29, and the new features of
this version is as follows. :)
*Now ThermoProtect allows you to add temperature modifier to any or
all of the thermal probes. Some user requested this because BIOS in
motherboards like Asus P5A add a few degrees to the actual reading to
"compensate" for the distance between the thermal probe and CPU.
Only zero or positive values are accepted, negtive value are
automatically changed to zero instead. Negtive value are rejected
because it have the potenical of becoming a tool for people to play
jokes on another for them to think the temperature of the CPU is
remarkably low, while the CPU is actually overheating. So
negtive value are substitued by zero automatically.
*Now EnvSetup.EXE allows temperature of in both Celsius and
Fahrenheit, the Fahrenheit input are automatically converted to Celsius
due to the fact that Celsius standard is what Winbond/National
Semiconductor designed their chip to output. Not to mention this author
is incapable of thinking in terms of Fahrenheit. :)
The file is available NOW at:
http://www.pcenduser.com/ThermoProtect
And please visit:
http://www.innovalue.com
For cooling, motherboard, system recovery card and MORE... :)
No need to buy anything, just come and have a look is all we ask. :)

We finally started another survey at OS2.org.
VMware emailed all interested OS/2 users some
questions, asking how they would like VMware to
support OS/2. We now took all these questions and
created a short survey at http://en.OS2.org/.
Everybody is invited to take part, so we hopefully
get OS/2 supported one day!
We also started a new serie of guest editorials at
OS2.org. Holger Veit, porter of XFree86/2, started
with "OSnux or Li/2?". Each month another very
interesting guest writer will be presented.
Enjoy it.

Every Monday, I'll be reporting on OS/2-related items for sale on
http://www.ebay.com and the comp.os.os2.marketplace newsgroup. Even if
you're not thinking about buying anything OS/2 related, you might find
something that catches your interest.
I apologize for not posting the eBay report over the past couple weeks.
These lapses are bound to happen occasionally.
On eBay, there are several copies of OS/2 2.x, Warp 3, Warp 4, and Lotus
applications available for sale. There are also a large number of OS/2
books available. Someone also appears to be selling 6 copies of the Warp 3
bonus pack - I can't tell if that includes OS/2 Warp 3 or not.
Other than that, we have this week: DriveImage 2.0, SPF/PC 4.0, Stacker 1.1,
a DCE client, IBM Internet Connection Server, OS/2 extended services +
database server, Photo>Graphics (I pity the person who bid $65 for it when
you can download the Pro version for free), IBM NetFinity Manager 5.0
(another item you can download for free), PFS:Works for OS/2, EXTRA!
Mainframe for OS/2, Lotus Notes 3.3, and DB2/2 server 2.1.
For the collector, we have: A Fiesta Bowl Polo Shirt, an OS/2 sweater, a
mousepad, a lapel/hat pin, and a coffee mug.
I wasn't kidding when I said there are a lot of OS/2 books available, half
of which are for programmers. There's some great stuff out there, people!!!
Kogan's "the design of OS/2" is the #1 pick, but there are dozens of others,
including some I've never heard of, like Objects for OS/2, Converting
Applications to OS/2, OS/2 and NetWare Programming, as well as some rare
Microsoft OS/2 programming books. I'm definitely going to be comparing this
week's list with my current library.
Besides the books, for programmers we have: Two versions of IBM C Set++ and
Borland C++.
Like I said, there is a lot of OS/2 stuff for sale this week, twice as many
items as normal. Of course, a lot of it is old junk from the 1.x and 2.x
days, but there are some real gems. Check it out!
On comp.os.os2.marketplace, we have: various versions of OS/2 and one person
who is selling a bunch of OS/2 books, a collection of OS/2 software
(SmartSuite, Colorworks, DeScribe, etc), BYTE's OS2 Programmers Cookbook,
and another person is selling a bunch of programming sutff (VisPro C++, OS/2
DevCons, some books, and DeScribe).
Those of you looking to sell your OS/2 related stuff, I strongly recommend
you put it on eBay and post an announcement on comp.os.os2.marketplace. If
you include the word "OS/2" in the title of your description, I'll see it
and include it in the next report.
If you're looking for OS/2 items on eBay, search on the phrase ("OS/2",OS2),
including the parentheses.

Even though SCOUG's (Southern California OS/2 User Group) main event in
September is Warp Expo West (http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest/), they
have some other events going on this month.
Monday, September 20, 7 PM PDT meetings at Heritage Christian High
School in Anaheim:
SCOUG holds a Help Desk chat every Monday of the month except one ---
and that's when the in-person Help Desk happens. Bring your computers
and questions to Heritage Christian High School on Sept. 20th for
hands-on help with your system. (More on the Help Desk chat later)
This month's Networking SIG will be a Help Desk-type session as a
follow-up to Warp Expo West. If you have any network-related issues
that need resolving, this is the meeting for you. Bring your computer(s)
and/or specifics on your problems and needs and we will get you up and
working before the night is out.
If you live in the Southern California area and can help out, by all
means come; we anticipate a larger than normal turnout since this
month's in-person Help Desk and Networking SIG is 2 days after Warp
Expo West.
Thursday, September 23, 7 PM PDT meeting at Heritage Christian High
School:
Join the Sundial SIG at Heritage Christian HS for a look this month at
the Clearlook word processor. For more information about the Sundial
SIG, contact SIG leader Sheridan George at sheridan@scoug.com.
IRC Chats:
SCOUG hosts the Help Desk chat every Monday (except when we have the
in-person Help Desk) at 7 PM (Pacific Time), the Internet SIG via IRC
Wednesdays at 7 PM (Pacific Time), and the Warp Systems Chat Saturdays
at 8 AM (Pacific Time). Go to http://www.scoug.com/chat for further
details on how to get chatty.
How to get to Heritage Christian High School:
The Heritage Christian High School in Anaheim is at 2530 W. La Palma Ave.
It is on the south side of La Palma Ave. (about 200 ft. E of Magnolia) on the
Grace Baptist Church property. There is a 2-story office building close to
La Palma Ave. with the address of 2528 up near the roof. Turn in (south)
there.
Drive all the way to the back and park along the chain-link fence.
NOTE: There is a lot of freeway construction north of the school on I-5 and
the
91 freeways; some on/off ramps may be closed and/or have detours. Check
the SCOUG web site (http://www.scoug.com) for updates and leave yourself
plenty of time to reach the high school.

Sorry for this late update, but due to service problems, I
was rather quickly weened off my last internet service
provider.
Needless to say, this broke a good number of links to my
OS/2 related cartoons.
I now have a new home at: http://www.vcnet.com/~harry/
The Widget Box cartoon is published about once a month using
P>G Pro for OS/2. Now that I have additional web space, I
will repost all the orginal OS/2oons and the latest Widget
Box.
In addition, I will post the GDO files on request for those
OS/2 users who wish to make enlargements of the cartoons
without getting all them jaggies.

At the request of the 32bits Online team, I wrote a
commentary on why OS/2 is the lead platform for Serenity
Systems Managed Client(r) products. Because of the focus of
this site, the commentary is focused on OS/2 and Linux. And
the commentary is as expansive as I could make it, given
the context.
The article is at http://www.32bitsonline.com/ and I
welcome posts to the forum, or off line email, which
contribute to this discussion.

Press Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
____________________________________________________________
Live Video Internet Feed From Warp Expo West
Warp Expo West announces something very special - a live video feed
over the Internet from the show floor.
You'll be able to watch the video on your Netscape browser.
The continuous broadcasts will begin when Warp Expo West opens it
doors on Saturday.
At this time we aren't exactly sure how many channels of video we will
deliver. The system itself can supply four different channels and we
hope to have all four up and running. There are multiple T1 lines in
place to deliver these four video channels to the Internet backbone.
There are some technical issues that still need to be worked out. The
audio feed is one we're still working on, and fine tuning the HTML code
for your Netscape browser is another.
Still, the video system worked fine in tests on both Saturday and
Sunday and we're confident we can deliver live video to you on "show
day" this coming Saturday. There will be a special link on the Warp
Expo West web pages and you won't need anything but your Netscape
browser.
This is not a "webcam". This is full-motion video, just like you see
on your television.
Even with the multiple T1 lines there are some bandwidth issues and we
may have to reduce the image size, increase the compression level or
restrict the number of simultaneous users depending on how many people
choose to "tune in". A lot depends on the average bandwidth of viewers
like yourself, since cable modems and DSL lines will load our video
system more than 56K modems. Consider this a part of OS/2 history, as
we take a "first shot" at sending full-motion video to your computer
screen.
The idea for the live video feed belongs to Tim Katz of Demand
Systems. (Demand Systems is an OS/2 preinstaller and an exhibitor at
Warp Expo West.)
Tim Katz did the engineering design work, lined up the equipment and
first tested the fully completed system on the Demand Systems network
last Saturday. He and Steve Schiffman, the Network and Facilities
Director for Warp Expo West, then tested the system at the show site on
Sunday.
There was plenty of preparation for the final test. "I had to ensure
that our supplier network was capable of supplying the bandwidth
required," said Schiffman, "and that meant checking on each segment of
the uplink. We'll have cameras in the lecture rooms and in the
exhibitor area, and we'll supply a combination of live video feeds and
repeat broadcasts of the most popular lectures."
Tim Katz had to work out some last-minute connections and spent part
of the testing time working on the HTML. "Netscape supports live video,
but Internet Explorer requires a special add-on which we won't support,"
said Katz. "The Netscape HTML is coded in a certain way and it took a
bit of experimentation to get it right."
And Tim McCoy, owner of Demand Systems and present during the tests,
was very pleased. "We like to come up with a solution no matter what
the problem, and live video on the Internet is in everyone's future for
seminars, trade shows, even family events such as weddings and any
gathering of people. It's cost effective."
Rollin White, Chairman of Warp Expo West, said that "watching live
video over the Internet is a great demonstration of why OS/2 is a
leading technology platform."
And Terry Warren, President of The Southern California OS/2 User Group
(SCOUG), the show's sponsoring organization, said "This is the
technology of the future and we're pleased that SCOUG can bring this new
benefit to OS/2 users via Warp Expo West."
- - -
Warp Expo West is free, free, free. The show will be held on
September 18 near Disneyland in sunny Southern California. All the info
is at

Special $75 ticket price for Warpstock '99 extended to October 15.
The Warpstock Board of Directors and the Warpstock '99 Atlanta
Committee, http://www.warpstock.org, are pleased to announce that the
special ticket price of $75 has been extended until October 15, the day
before Warpstock. Previously, this special rate was available only
until August 15. Now, anyone who registers in advance for Warpstock can
save $20. The full ticket price for those registering at the door
remains at $95, which is still a great value!
The extended discount is possible because of generous sponsorship from
both IBM and VOICE. All of the Warpstock staff and volunteers thank
both of these organizations for their incredible support.
Warpstock '99 is the premier OS/2 event of the year. It will be held in
Atlanta, GA, on October 16 and 17. Anyone and everyone who is
interested in IBM's award-winning operating system should attend. This
event is not just for the individual or small-office user - IBM and
other vendors will be demonstrating their products for large corporate
accounts, and there will be presentations geared towards all types of
OS/2 users.
More information about Warpstock '99 can be found at the official
Warpstock web site, http://www.warpstock.org. IBM's web site is

Hi All,
For those of you trying to contact BMT Micro tomorrow (Sept
16) please take note of the following:
------------------------
Just a quick note to let you all know that ye olde hurricane
Floyd is bearing down on us and we might lose our internet
and telephone connection during the storm. Also note that
our phone system requires electricity so if the phone rings
without an answer it's not because we decided not to answer
the phones. ;-) If we do lose our phone system we can drop
back to the old 6 line analogs handsets and busy out the
last 2 lines to take care of business.
In other, "hey, great timing" news.....
One of the things we've done in September is make
substantial investments in hardware upgrades which included
RAID configurations in all the servers. If you noticed the
Supersite and the secure server (secure.bmtmicro.com) going
up and down for periods of 20-30 minutes twice this
afternoon (9/15/99) that was us swapping out drives so we
could store a mirror of each server off site just in case.
We've also have 2 heavy duty generators to power the servers
and office machines, so barring physical damage to the
structure itself we do not anticipate being down long if at
all. Another good thing is that the switching station for
our T1 just happens to be conveniently located about 150
yards from our office so if/when the phone/data connections
go out, we're fortunate enough to be one of the first
customers back online due to our location.
Bottom line: We thank you in advance for your patience if
we disappear for a few hours tomorrow. Another factor in
all this is that most of us have wives, husbands, and
children to protect and it may be that we operate with a
skeleton crew in the beginning.
To our customers and vendors, all data is logged - if you
can place an order, we can find it - so do not worry about
making an order if you have a connection to our server.
Just be patient and allow an extra bit of time for your
order to be processed.
Another item of note is that http://www.bmtmicro.com and
ftp://ftp.bmtmicro.com are located at our providers' simply
because we've never gotten around to physically moving the
machines so you might be able to get to the BMT website but
not the BMT secure server which _is_ at our office. If
_that_ turns into a problem, we've made arrangements to
locate our entire network at our providers and run our
office via dialup to our servers.
If you are a developer and we deliver your product in real
time you might also be interested to know that we have made
great progress in the past 2 weeks migrating our real time
fulfillment products from the old system to a vastly
improved system using Java servlets and Oracle. Another
benefit is that much of the routine order processing can be
done remotely since the orders are already billed and
imported into the database. Isn't technology wonderful. ;-)
From all of us here at BMT, we thank you for your kindness
and consideration and we would like to personally think all
of you who have written out of concern. You're the best!
Thanks from all of us!
Jimmy, Frank, Teri, Kim, Jennifer, Chris, Michele, Kristina,
Todd, Shawn and Thomas! (lots of new faces!)

It isn't easy to get PCs with OS/2 preloads. So, putting a
complete OS/2 desktop on a PC usually starts from scratch.
How long should you allow to take a new PC, load OS/2,
create a desktop with 100 native OS/2 programs, activate
Merlin's Voice Type dictation, and "turn on" OS/2
multi-media so you can listen to WAV files, MIDI files ..
and ... whatever?
If I were to play ... Beat the Clock with you ... how many
hours, minutes, and seconds would you give me? What if I
said I could do all this in less than hour, would you
believe me? How about less than 10 minutes? Still with me?
What if I said I could get it done before your 3 minute egg
was half cooked?
Here's the Kim Cheung Challenge: Come to Warp Expo West
this Saturday ... bring your minute timer ... let's have a
race! If you don't have a minute timer ... bring the words
to the Minute Waltz ... but nothing longer than that.

Below is the response that I received from
NovaStor about possible CD-RW support under
OS/2.
"The current versions of the NovaDisk CD/DVD
software will not support the OS/2 Warp

support for this operating system with the
next revision of the software. This is due
to be available by the end of October 1999.
The supported operating systems are Windows

something they'd be comfortable with. Better safe than sued.

Straight from Apple's web site. The Army is moving from NT to MacOS as a

Press Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
____________________________________________________________
Business Money Favors OS/2, Heads For Warp Expo West
A large number of businessmen, entrepreneurs and members
of the financial community will attend Warp Expo West on
Saturday.
"They like the return on investment that OS/2 gives them,"
says Carla Hanzlik, Editor of the monthly publication OS/2
For You. "They like the low cost of ownership, the low
maintenance, the ability to run on older hardware, the
robust networking, the Y2K readiness. They look at other
solutions, they compare them point-by-point, and they choose
OS/2."
The most popular sessions among the business community are
the following, according to Hanzlik.
"IBM: The New Strategy To Control The Worldwide Desktop"
discussion roundtable with Peter Coffee of PC Week, Esther
Schindler of Sm@rt Reseller, and Alan Zeichick of Camden
Associates. "This open debate will give insight to the
direction that IBM will take in the future," says Hanzlik,
"and will show how IBM is becoming extremely aggressive once
again."
"Warp Server for e-Business and WorkSpace On-Demand" by
Steven King, Senior Manager of IBM's Network Computing
Software Division. "The various servers required by
business are covered in this session," says Hanzlik, "as
well as the considerations for decision planning."
"Web Server Performance and Scalability" by Robert Chapman
of the Institute Of Advanced Development Strategies.
Hanzlik has noticed much interest in this seminar, "because
managers and business owners need to know up front what the
problems are that their technical staff will face."
"Warpicity: An Overview and Update" by Lynn Maxson. "The
expense of developing software is huge," points out Hanzlik,
"and this proposal could greatly change the model of
creating unique applications."
"Services Offerings for the OS/2 Platforms" by Steven King
of IBM. "This is a fundamental checklist of the areas that
must be included in a business plan," notes Hanzlik, "and
covers both the range of projects and the reasons they are
important to a business decision-maker."
"WorkSpace On-Demand, Remote Client Connection" by Dennis
Sposato of IBM's Network Computing Software Division. "A
very powerful technology which incorporates both legacy and
new hardware into a fully-functioning business network,"
Hanzlik states.
"Warped Jeopardy!" hosted by Sundial Systems. "We've
found this to be an extremely popular selection with
business people, which matches the interest we've seen in
all other groups," says Hanzlik.
Hanzlik has been in the computer industry for 15 years,
and Editor of OS/2 For You for six. She notes that there is
prime interest in seeing specific exhibitors as well.
"IBM will be showing OS/2 Warp Server For e-Business and
WorkSpace On-Demand, and Serenity Systems will show their
WiseManager product," says Hanzlik. "These are very
cost-effective solutions for any business environment."
"Phoenix Software and Sundial Systems have a number of
applications for business users," continues Hanzlik,
"including very sophisticated database and spreadsheet
software which is customizable for specific business
projects."
"We've also had many inquiries about OS/2 preinstallers,
and Demand Systems is one of our exhibitors who will build
pre-loaded OS/2 machines that can simply be set on a desktop
and turned on. In a business environment this is certainly
less expensive than spending valuable time fiddling with the
install software, the drivers and the configuration."
"Business telephone needs are covered by Active Voice and
Auto VoiceSystems," notes Hanzlik. "Auto-attendant, voice
mail, fax, all these services are represented here."
"And we also have the Institute Of Advanced Development
Strategies, who will cover project scheduling technology and
mainframe utilization."
Cost-effective business solutions are covered at Warp Expo
West!

On Monday, September 20th at 8:00PM EDT (00:00 GMT), VOICE will host a
Speakup session in WEBBnet IRC, #voice channel, with Mike Kaply and
Jeffrey Kobal of the IBM Netscape for OS/2 Development Team.
Topic of this Speakup will be "Netscape 4.61 for OS/2".
As of this posting, there have been 2 BETA drops of Netscape 4.61 for
OS/2, and it's now in very limited GAMMA testing. Many improvements
have been made since the release of Netscape 4.04, and many problems
have been solved during this BETA testing cycle, building up to a
(hopefully) soon-to-be-released GA version.

After a year of thorough beta-testing, Theta Band Software is proud
to announce the final release of the Multimedia Pack for OS/2, a
collection of utilities to enhance OS/2 multimedia.
MMPack contains the following programs :
MMCheck
This is a utility that checks your MMPM/2 installation (i.e.
MMPM2.INI) for errors or suspicious settings. If it finds any, it
will tell you what they are, so that you can fix them.
MPU-401 Driver
This is a replacement for IBM's MPU-401 driver, which is used to
MIDI support for a number of sound cards, including sound cards that
use the Crystal Semiconductor drivers. Enhancements over
IBM's driver
include :
fixes for Warp 3
SMP compatibility
better hardware compatibility
DOS sharing
RTMIDI recording without an IRQ
and more!
NPDSMI 2.0
This is a plug-in for Netscape Navigator and Communicator for OS/2.
The function of the DSMI plug-in is to play music module files
embedded on web pages. Module files are 32 channel digital music and
are of tremendously high quality. This new version 2.0 of the DSMI
Netscape plug-in supports compressed zip module files.
More information about MMPack is available on our web site at
http://www.thetaband.com
We will also demonstrate MMPack at Warp Expo West in Orange, California
on September 18 .

This is to inform you that MIDI Station Sequencer (MSS) Beta
6 is now available from my website for download. Some of
the new features available are:
1 - Completed Piano Roll module
2 - Fixed problems with audio recording
3 - Fixed layout in Audio Track window - waves now display
proper lengths
4 - Improved playback performance (still a few things left
to do here)
5 - Minor bug fixes and enhancements
The product is pretty much feature complete for this
version. I strongly encourage you to try this version out
as soon as possible and give me some feedback on it. Look
for the GA version very soon. Also if you're interested in
purchasing the sequencer I would recommend that you do so
now because there may be a price increase when the product
goes gold.
IMPORTANT!! IMPORTANT!! IMPORTANT!! IMPORTANT!! IMPORTANT!!
IMPORTANT!!
There is something that you can do to drastically improve
your playback performance. Change the timer sensitivity to
1ms. Originally the default was 5ms but this has turned out
not to be optimal for playback. Look in the settings
notebook on the "Advanced" tab and you'll see the option to
change the timer sensitivity. You'll find that the
performance improves considerably.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hey/2
I managed to port the Extended TAC Access Control
server (in short xtacacsd) from unix to OS/2.
xtacacsd is a unix daemon which controls access to
CISCO Servers which are used by ISP's for dialup
access.
Because i can't test/debug it since i don't have a CISCO
Server, i need someone to test my port.
If you think you have some free time and a CISCO Server
available, please email me at sehh@altered.com.
Thank you.

In 1998, Stardock took the position that if IBM had no current
or projected plans for a new fat OS/2 client, that it was in the
interests of OS/2 users and the computing community in general that
a third-party should work with IBM to license OS/2 technology
on an OEM basis and make a new client available.
To that end, late last year, Stardock prepared a business plan and
opened negotiations with IBM. The wheels of bureacracy grind slowly,
but eventually it was up to "IBM" (executive level) to make the ultimate
call on proceeding.
For the past 6 months, Stardock and IBM have been working closely
together in hammering out the details of an OS/2 client. Everything
from potential names down to which minute components would or would
not be included. These meetings included multiple in person
meetings with IBM staff and executives here at Stardock's office
complex in Livonia Michigan.
With an agreement in principle in place, the last major hurdle
was this week in which the IBMers in favor of our proposal (mostly in
Austin) presented their case to IBM as a whole.
The call has been made -- there will be no new client from Stardock
and IBM has indicated that they have no plans for an OS/2 based
client of their own.
Though IBM indicated Stardock had the strongest proposal, they have
decided that it is currently not in IBM's or their customer's interests
to license any current OS/2 technology on an OEM-basis.
There was never any discord between IBM and Stardock over financials,
technical viability, target market, or the like. IBM has simply finally
made the decision that a new OS/2 client would be in conflict with
their strategic directions.
Stardock would like to extend a special thanks to all the IBMers
(and in particular Ken Christopher and Timothy Sipples) who went above
and beyond the call in working with us and going to bat inside IBM.
Remember when you meet folks like them, who are and have been
intimately involved with OS/2, that their hands may be just as tied
as yours when the IBM Corporation as a whole sets policy.
Everything that could be done was done.

We all heard it, Stardock is not allowed to release a new OS/2 client.
I and many other OS/2 users are very disapointed about this.
As the webmaster of OS/2 Netlabs I would like to share my statement
about the future of OS/2. In fact I want to make sure that you don't
delete your OS/2 partition. Read it and be prepaired for more!

OS/2 SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP
PHILADELPHIA AREA COMPUTER SOCIETY
http://www.phillyos2.org
The OS/2 SIG of the Philadelphia Area Computer Society invites
all interested computer users to attend the September meeting:
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1999 7:00 - 10:00 PM
The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA
*** SEPTEMBER FEATURE PRESENTATIONS ***
-- Members' OS/2 Tips and Tricks Night --
The main theme for the September meeting will be a continuation
of presentations and live demos (if possible) by several SIG
members, of interesting and helpful applications, tips and tricks
which these members regularly employ to enhance the usefulness,
productivity and enjoyment of their OS/2 systems.
This will be a continuation of the August meeting when we were
treated to two great presentations: SETI by Ben Bowers; and
House/2 with the X10 Controller by Murray Weismer. Presentations
of "URL Objects to Organize Websites" by John Davey and "Various
WPS Tricks" by David Moskowitz, originally scheduled for August,
will now be given in September.
Larry Lavins will also present his very recent experience with
the planning and successful installation of Windows 98-SE into
his computer, alongside the previously installed OS/2. Many OS/2
users have expressed interest in a reliable, safe procedure for
installing Win95/98 into an OS/2 system.
The September meeting will provide another especially good
opportunity for all our folks to come on out to see and learn
more about what some of the other OS/2 users are doing and to
share experiences and knowhow.
Other agenda items include SIG business matters, OS/2 news, new
software releases, Q&A session, software raffle, etc. An OS/2
system will be on hand for demos of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc.,
as time permits. Free light refreshments will also be available.
Mark the date and time: Wednesday, September 22, at 7:00pm, to
hear about all the new and exciting developments, or if you have
questions about OS/2 Warp and Java. OS/2 SIG meetings are open
and free for OS/2 users, their guests and all others interested
in learning about OS/2 and associated Java technology.

Further information, directions to Episcopal Academy, and other
useful information about the OS/2 SIG activities may be found on
our web site at http://www.phillyos2.org, or contact SIG Leader

The OS/2 port of MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) has been upgraded
to version .36 beta 5. The DOS and Windoze guys must not have wanted me to
catch up, but I've done it again. ;-)
MAME runs 1785 classic and some not so classic arcade games of the 70's,
80's, and 90's from the comfort of your OS/2 desktop.
This upgrade includes a few minor bugfixes as well as an updated MAME core.
For more information and to download the latest version, visit
http://emuos2.davesvgc.com. There is a Pentium optimized as well as a 486
optimized version available.
Enjoy!

Press Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
____________________________________________________________
Attendance Exceeds Estimates, Warp Expo West Mobbed !!!
Warp Expo West, the international "Warpfest Of OS/2
Excitement" in sunny California, held court to throngs of
happy OS/2 revelers on Saturday as it filled lecture halls,
exhibit areas and hallways with an enthusiasm unseen in
recent memory. The four lecture halls were often at
capacity, the exhibitor area often mobbed.
"We had 20% more guests than anticipated," said Rollin
White, Chairman of Warp Expo West. "We obviously
underestimated the industry's interest in OS/2 and the
number of people who would travel long distances to attend a
major OS/2 function."
International guests mingled with local attendees as
lecture after lecture poured forth from the auditoriums and
seminar rooms.
The roundtable with Peter Coffee of PC Week, Esther
Schindler of Sm@rt Reseller and Alan Zeichick of Camden
Associates had people talking for the rest of the day,
discussing the panelist's comments and sharing their own
personal insights.
Jerry Rash began the first of his four OS/2 multimedia
lecture periods faced with an overflow crowd. Extra chairs
were brought in and the audience spilled out through the
doors and into the hallway, listening to his every word and
vying for an occasional glimpse of the screen.
When asked during a morning pause how the show was doing
for bringing in new business, Jim Williams of IBM replied
"We've already made several good contacts. Warp Expo West
is about the best show we've been to."
And so it went. Guests poured in from all over the U.S.
and from overseas as well, taking in this massive gathering
of OS/2 technology, products and information.
Lecturers held impromptu discussions in the hallways. The
Warped Jeopardy! game show presentation from Sundial Systems
was a combined multimedia extravaganza and stage show
delight. Live video feeds were sent around the world over
Internet connections. Webfoot, The Duck made an appearance.
Special exhibits lined the walls. Vendor100 was
spectacular to watch as WiseManager from Serenity Systems
instantly brought up icon after icon of Vendor100 software
on every machine during the network bootup. Commercial-
grade overhead projectors threw large images onto the
auditorium screens. The OS/2 space game Stellar Frontier
ran on a bank of machines.
"We've accomplished what we set out to do," continued
Rollin White, "and we've again brought OS/2 knowledge and
products to the community, to both current users and new
users, so that OS/2 will continue to be recognized for what
it is - the best desktop operating system in the world
today."

We at Serenity Systems International were very encouraged
by IBM's review of Stardock's OEM proposal for a client
product. While we regret the decision by IBM not to execute
the proposal at this time, we recognize the effort and
resource expended reviewing the Stardock proposal.
Serenity Systems has an OEM software agreement with IBM. We
found the IBM process with Stardock so positive that we are
preparing to explore a potential licensing agreement with
IBM for a client product based on the Warp Server for
e-business kernel.
The Serenity Systems focus is not the traditional fat PC
client. Therefore, the client workstation requirements for
the Serenity Systems' Managed Client(r) products are
significantly different than Stardock's requirements.
However, the relationship between Stardock and Serenity
Systems is one of mutual support and cooperation. It is our
hope that Stardock will participate in some form in any
proposal to IBM.
Serenity Systems plans to announce a Statement of Direction
regarding support for a Linux based Managed Client product.
We want to make it clear that any such announcement is not
a departure from, but an addition to, our OS/2 based
client.
OS/2 Warp 4 is the superior desktop client OS for Intel PCs
in the market today. A commentary explaining our Linux and
OS/2 positioning appeared on http://32bitsonline.com last
week and is still available for review as "I'll Chose
OS/2!".

A Show For California
VOICE has just published a background article - "A Show
For California" - about the intertwined history of
Warpstock, SCOUG, and Warp Expo West. It's a worthwhile
read for anyone interested in OS/2 and the grassroots shows
that have helped maintain its popularity.

Earlier today WarpCast pointed to a Press Release Serenity
Systems, an OS/2 ISV, from September 1 on PR Newswire,
advising businesses to get off Windows.
Linux Today (http://www.linuxtoday.com) has picked up a
follow up PRN from Serenity Systems which outlines why
Windows2000 is a money losing proposition for businesses,
with supporting information from Gartner Group. This PR
recommends IT strategies develop a PLAN B .. exploring
options, including OS/2, Linux, Java, Windows, and DOS.
This is important and timely information for businesses
addressing W2K migration expenses. OS/2 is not just a
better way, but its value is increasing. The ROI is
apparent on OS/2, non-existent with Windows 2000, as stated
in the release material.
Complete release will appear on Serenity Systems site,
http://www.serenity-systems.com

Los Angeles, CA - Phoenix Software International's, OS/2
product, (E)JES/2 product has fast become software
developers' best friend and a "tool they cannot
live without"!
As software developers encounter problems in programs they
are developing, they need access to three tools to
assist them in correcting their problems.
They need to access the assembly list, link map, and dump.
Traditionally, they would have to look at each of these
displays one at a time. Programmers would open each display,
review the information, and finally close the display to
move to the next display and repeat the process again.
With (E)JES/2, they can open up any number of windows and
simultaneously view all three displays concurrently with
their work. This means programmers can solve their
problems more effectively and efficiently then ever before.
(E)JES/2 also seamlessly integrates the function of IBM's
ISPF Client/Server product to provide a complete workstation
development environment. All the power of ISPF is
available without a traditional TSO address space.
(E)JES is a workplace shell compliant software product
jointly developed between Phoenix Software International and
IBM's SDSF development team to fully exploit IBM JES 2 SDSF
from a workstation. (E)JES/2 requires no emulators and
directly communicates with SDSF running either on multiple
hosts or sysplexes throughout your entire
computer environment.
The product maybe download from the Phoenix Homepage for
evaluation on your OS/2 workstations.

Subj: Philadelphia OS/2 SIG Mtg: Wed, Sep 22
