  103. poll for site visitors. If you are developing a mission 
  104. critical application, you may indicate which OS is the 
  105. target. So far, Linux has 65%, NT just over 10% and OS/2 
  106. just under 10% with 275 respondents.

  108. This is not an advocacy poll. But, if the shoe fits ... 
  109. developers should participate so an accurate representation 
  110. of OS/2 as a mission critical platform can be .. projected.

  343. I have just finished ThermoProtect V1.29, and the new features of 
  344. this version is as follows. :)
  345.  
  346. *Now ThermoProtect allows you to add temperature modifier to any or 
  347.  all of the thermal probes. Some user requested this because BIOS in 
  348.  motherboards like Asus P5A add a few degrees to the actual reading to 
  349.  "compensate" for the distance between the thermal probe and CPU. 
  350.  Only zero or positive values are accepted, negtive value are 
  351.  automatically changed to zero instead. Negtive value are rejected 
  352.  because it have the potenical of becoming a tool for people to play 
  353.  jokes on another for them to think the temperature of the CPU is 
  354.  remarkably low, while the CPU is actually overheating. So 
  355.  negtive value are substitued by zero automatically.
  356.  
  357. *Now EnvSetup.EXE allows temperature of in both Celsius and 
  358.  Fahrenheit, the Fahrenheit input are automatically converted to Celsius 
  359.  due to the fact that Celsius standard is what Winbond/National 
  360.  Semiconductor designed their chip to output. Not to mention this author 
  361.  is incapable of thinking in terms of Fahrenheit. :)

  488. VMware emailed all interested OS/2 users some 
  489. questions, asking how they would like VMware to 
  490. support OS/2. We now took all these questions and 
  491. created a short survey at http://en.OS2.org/.

  493. get OS/2 supported one day!

  496. OS2.org. Holger Veit, porter of XFree86/2, started

  715. Every Monday, I'll be reporting on OS/2-related items for sale on
  716. http://www.ebay.com and the comp.os.os2.marketplace newsgroup. Even if
  717. you're not thinking about buying anything OS/2 related, you might find
  718. something that catches your interest.

  720. I apologize for not posting the eBay report over the past couple weeks.
  721. These lapses are bound to happen occasionally.
  722.  
  723. On eBay, there are several copies of OS/2 2.x, Warp 3, Warp 4, and Lotus
  724. applications available for sale.  There are also a large number of OS/2
  725. books available.  Someone also appears to be selling 6 copies of the Warp 3
  726. bonus pack - I can't tell if that includes OS/2 Warp 3 or not.
  727.  
  728. Other than that, we have this week: DriveImage 2.0, SPF/PC 4.0, Stacker 1.1,
  729. a DCE client, IBM Internet Connection Server, OS/2 extended services +
  730. database server, Photo>Graphics (I pity the person who bid $65 for it when
  731. you can download the Pro version for free), IBM NetFinity Manager 5.0
  732. (another item you can download for free), PFS:Works for OS/2, EXTRA!
  733. Mainframe for OS/2, Lotus Notes 3.3, and DB2/2 server 2.1.
  734.  
  735. For the collector, we have: A Fiesta Bowl Polo Shirt, an OS/2 sweater, a
  736. mousepad, a lapel/hat pin, and a coffee mug.
  737.  
  738. I wasn't kidding when I said there are a lot of OS/2 books available, half
  739. of which are for programmers.  There's some great stuff out there, people!!!
  740. Kogan's "the design of OS/2" is the #1 pick, but there are dozens of others,
  741. including some I've never heard of, like Objects for OS/2, Converting
  742. Applications to OS/2, OS/2 and NetWare Programming, as well as some rare
  743. Microsoft OS/2 programming books.  I'm definitely going to be comparing this
  744. week's list with my current library.
  745.  
  746. Besides the books, for programmers we have: Two versions of IBM C Set++ and
  747. Borland C++.
  748.  
  749. Like I said, there is a lot of OS/2 stuff for sale this week, twice as many
  750. items as normal.  Of course, a lot of it is old junk from the 1.x and 2.x
  751. days, but there are some real gems.  Check it out!
  752.  
  753. On comp.os.os2.marketplace, we have: various versions of OS/2 and one person
  754. who is selling a bunch of OS/2 books, a collection of OS/2 software
  755. (SmartSuite, Colorworks, DeScribe, etc), BYTE's OS2 Programmers Cookbook,
  756. and another person is selling a bunch of programming sutff (VisPro C++, OS/2
  757. DevCons, some books, and DeScribe).
  758.  
  759. Those of you looking to sell your OS/2 related stuff, I strongly recommend
  760. you put it on eBay and post an announcement on comp.os.os2.marketplace. If
  761. you include the word "OS/2" in the title of your description, I'll see it
  762. and include it in the next report.

  1007.         Live Video Internet Feed From Warp Expo West

  1010.   Warp Expo West announces something very special - a live video feed
  1011. over the Internet from the show floor.
  1012.  
  1013.   You'll be able to watch the video on your Netscape browser.
  1014.  
  1015.   The continuous broadcasts will begin when Warp Expo West opens it
  1016. doors on Saturday.
  1017.  
  1018.   At this time we aren't exactly sure how many channels of video we will
  1019. deliver.  The system itself can supply four different channels and we
  1020. hope to have all four up and running.  There are multiple T1 lines in
  1021. place to deliver these four video channels to the Internet backbone.
  1022.  
  1023.   There are some technical issues that still need to be worked out.  The
  1024. audio feed is one we're still working on, and fine tuning the HTML code
  1025. for your Netscape browser is another.
  1026.  
  1027.   Still, the video system worked fine in tests on both Saturday and
  1028. Sunday and we're confident we can deliver live video to you on "show
  1029. day" this coming Saturday.  There will be a special link on the Warp
  1030. Expo West web pages and you won't need anything but your Netscape
  1031. browser.
  1032.  
  1033.   This is not a "webcam".  This is full-motion video, just like you see
  1034. on your television.
  1035.  
  1036.   Even with the multiple T1 lines there are some bandwidth issues and we
  1037. may have to reduce the image size, increase the compression level or
  1038. restrict the number of simultaneous users depending on how many people
  1039. choose to "tune in".  A lot depends on the average bandwidth of viewers
  1040. like yourself, since cable modems and DSL lines will load our video
  1041. system more than 56K modems.  Consider this a part of OS/2 history, as
  1042. we take a "first shot" at sending full-motion video to your computer
  1043. screen.
  1044.  
  1045.   The idea for the live video feed belongs to Tim Katz of Demand
  1046. Systems.  (Demand Systems is an OS/2 preinstaller and an exhibitor at
  1047. Warp Expo West.)
  1048.  
  1049.   Tim Katz did the engineering design work, lined up the equipment and
  1050. first tested the fully completed system on the Demand Systems network
  1051. last Saturday.  He and Steve Schiffman, the Network and Facilities
  1052. Director for Warp Expo West, then tested the system at the show site on
  1053. Sunday.
  1054.  
  1055.   There was plenty of preparation for the final test.  "I had to ensure
  1056. that our supplier network was capable of supplying the bandwidth
  1057. required," said Schiffman, "and that meant checking on each segment of
  1058. the uplink.  We'll have cameras in the lecture rooms and in the
  1059. exhibitor area, and we'll supply a combination of live video feeds and
  1060. repeat broadcasts of the most popular lectures."
  1061.  
  1062.   Tim Katz had to work out some last-minute connections and spent part
  1063. of the testing time working on the HTML.  "Netscape supports live video,
  1064. but Internet Explorer requires a special add-on which we won't support,"
  1065. said Katz.  "The Netscape HTML is coded in a certain way and it took a
  1066. bit of experimentation to get it right."
  1067.  
  1068.   And Tim McCoy, owner of Demand Systems and present during the tests,
  1069. was very pleased.  "We like to come up with a solution no matter what
  1070. the problem, and live video on the Internet is in everyone's future for
  1071. seminars, trade shows, even family events such as weddings and any
  1072. gathering of people.  It's cost effective."
  1073.  
  1074.   Rollin White, Chairman of Warp Expo West, said that "watching live
  1075. video over the Internet is a great demonstration of why OS/2 is a
  1076. leading technology platform."
  1077.  
  1078.   And Terry Warren, President of The Southern California OS/2 User Group
  1079. (SCOUG), the show's sponsoring organization, said "This is the

  1191. For those of you trying to contact BMT Micro tomorrow (Sept
  1192. 16) please take note of the following:

  1196. Just a quick note to let you all know that ye olde hurricane
  1197. Floyd is bearing down on us and we might lose our internet
  1198. and telephone connection during the storm.  Also note that
  1199. our phone system requires electricity so if the phone rings
  1200. without an answer it's not because we decided not to answer
  1201. the phones.  ;-)  If we do lose our phone system we can drop
  1202. back to the old 6 line analogs handsets and busy out the
  1203. last 2 lines to take care of business.
  1204.  
  1205. In other, "hey, great timing" news.....
  1206.  
  1207. One of the things we've done in September is make
  1208. substantial investments in hardware upgrades which included
  1209. RAID configurations in all the servers.  If you noticed the
  1210. Supersite and the secure server (secure.bmtmicro.com) going
  1211. up and down for periods of 20-30 minutes twice this
  1212. afternoon (9/15/99) that was us swapping out drives so we
  1213. could store a mirror of each server off site just in case.
  1214.  
  1215. We've also have 2 heavy duty generators to power the servers
  1216. and office machines, so barring physical damage to the
  1217. structure itself we do not anticipate being down long if at
  1218. all.   Another good thing is that the switching station for
  1219. our T1 just happens to be conveniently located about 150
  1220. yards from our office so if/when the phone/data connections
  1221. go out, we're fortunate enough to be one of the first
  1222. customers back online due to our location.
  1223.  
  1224. Bottom line:  We thank you in advance for your patience if
  1225. we disappear for a few hours tomorrow.  Another factor in
  1226. all this is that most of us have wives, husbands, and
  1227. children to protect and it may be that we operate with a
  1228. skeleton crew in the beginning.
  1229.  
  1230. To our customers and vendors, all data is logged - if you
  1231. can place an order, we can find it -  so do not worry about
  1232. making an order if you have a connection to our server.
  1233. Just be patient and allow an extra bit of time for your
  1234. order to be processed.
  1235.  
  1236. Another item of note is that http://www.bmtmicro.com and
  1237. ftp://ftp.bmtmicro.com are located at our providers' simply
  1238. because we've never gotten around to physically moving the
  1239. machines so you might be able to get to the BMT website but
  1240. not the BMT secure server which _is_ at our office. If
  1241. _that_ turns into a problem, we've made arrangements to
  1242. locate our entire network at our providers and run our
  1243. office via dialup to our servers.
  1244.  
  1245. If you are a developer and we deliver your product in real
  1246. time you might also be interested to know that we have made
  1247. great progress in the past 2 weeks migrating our real time
  1248. fulfillment products from the old system to a vastly
  1249. improved system using Java servlets and Oracle.   Another
  1250. benefit is that much of the routine order processing  can be
  1251. done remotely since the orders are already billed and
  1252. imported into the database.  Isn't technology wonderful. ;-)
  1253.

  1312. complete OS/2 desktop on a PC usually starts from scratch. 
  1313. How long should you allow to take a new PC, load OS/2, 
  1314. create a desktop with 100 native OS/2 programs, activate 
  1315. Merlin's Voice Type dictation, and "turn on" OS/2 
  1316. multi-media so you can listen to WAV files, MIDI files ..

  2095. 6 is now available from my website for download.  Some of

  2111. now because there may be a price increase when the product
  2112. goes gold.

  2121. notebook on the "Advanced" tab and you'll see the option to 
  2122. change the timer sensitivity.  You'll find that the 
  2123. performance improves considerably.

  2370. In 1998, Stardock took the position that if IBM had no current 
  2371. or projected plans for a new fat OS/2 client, that it was in the 
  2372. interests of OS/2 users and the computing community in general that 
  2373. a third-party should work with IBM to license OS/2 technology 
  2374. on an OEM basis and make a new client available.
  2375.  
  2376. To that end, late last year, Stardock prepared a business plan and 
  2377. opened negotiations with IBM. The wheels of bureacracy grind slowly, 
  2378. but eventually it was up to "IBM" (executive level) to make the ultimate 
  2379. call on proceeding.
  2380.  
  2381. For the past 6 months, Stardock and IBM have been working closely 
  2382. together in hammering out the details of an OS/2 client. Everything 
  2383. from potential names down to which minute components would or would 
  2384. not be included.  These meetings included multiple in person 
  2385. meetings with IBM staff and executives here at Stardock's office 
  2386. complex in Livonia Michigan.
  2387.  
  2388. With an agreement in principle in place, the last major hurdle 
  2389. was this week in which the IBMers in favor of our proposal (mostly in 
  2390. Austin) presented their case to IBM as a whole.
  2391.  
  2392. The call has been made -- there will be no new client from Stardock 
  2393. and IBM has indicated that they have no plans for an OS/2 based 
  2394. client of their own.
  2395.  
  2396. Though IBM indicated Stardock had the strongest proposal, they have 
  2397. decided that it is currently not in IBM's or their customer's interests 
  2398. to license any current OS/2 technology on an OEM-basis.
  2399.  
  2400. There was never any discord between IBM and Stardock over financials,
  2401. technical viability, target market, or the like.  IBM has simply finally
  2402. made the decision that a new OS/2 client would be in conflict with 
  2403. their strategic directions.
  2404.  
  2405. Stardock would like to extend a special thanks to all the IBMers 
  2406. (and in particular Ken Christopher and Timothy Sipples) who went above 
  2407. and beyond the call in working with us and going to bat inside IBM.  
  2408. Remember when you meet folks like them, who are and have been 
  2409. intimately involved with OS/2, that their hands may be just as tied 
  2410. as yours when the IBM Corporation as a whole sets policy.

  2742. the planning and successful installation of Windows 98-SE into
  2743. his computer, alongside the previously installed OS/2. Many OS/2
  2744. users have expressed interest in a reliable, safe procedure for
  2745. installing Win95/98 into an OS/2 system.

  2747. The September meeting will provide another especially good
  2748. opportunity for all our folks to come on out to see and learn
  2749. more about what some of the other OS/2 users are doing and to
  2750. share experiences and knowhow.

  2752. Other agenda items include SIG business matters, OS/2 news, new
  2753. software releases, Q&A session, software raffle, etc. An OS/2
  2754. system will be on hand for demos of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc.,
  2755. as time permits. Free light refreshments will also be available.

  2868. Excitement" in sunny California, held court to throngs of
  2869. happy OS/2 revelers on Saturday as it filled lecture halls,
  2870. exhibit areas and hallways with an enthusiasm unseen in
  2871. recent memory.  The four lecture halls were often at
  2872. capacity, the exhibitor area often mobbed.
  2873.  
  2874.   "We had 20% more guests than anticipated," said Rollin
  2875. White, Chairman of Warp Expo West.  "We obviously
  2876. underestimated the industry's interest in OS/2 and the
  2877. number of people who would travel long distances to attend a
  2878. major OS/2 function."
  2879.  
  2880.   International guests mingled with local attendees as
  2881. lecture after lecture poured forth from the auditoriums and
  2882. seminar rooms.
  2883.  
  2884.   The roundtable with Peter Coffee of PC Week, Esther
  2885. Schindler of Sm@rt Reseller and Alan Zeichick of Camden
  2886. Associates had people talking for the rest of the day,
  2887. discussing the panelist's comments and sharing their own
  2888. personal insights.
  2889.  
  2890.   Jerry Rash began the first of his four OS/2 multimedia
  2891. lecture periods faced with an overflow crowd.  Extra chairs
  2892. were brought in and the audience spilled out through the
  2893. doors and into the hallway, listening to his every word and
  2894. vying for an occasional glimpse of the screen.
  2895.  
  2896.   When asked during a morning pause how the show was doing
  2897. for bringing in new business, Jim Williams of IBM replied
  2898. "We've already made several good contacts.  Warp Expo West
  2899. is about the best show we've been to."
  2900.  
  2901.   And so it went.  Guests poured in from all over the U.S.
  2902. and from overseas as well, taking in this massive gathering
  2903. of OS/2 technology, products and information.
  2904.  
  2905.   Lecturers held impromptu discussions in the hallways.  The
  2906. Warped Jeopardy! game show presentation from Sundial Systems
  2907. was a combined multimedia extravaganza and stage show
  2908. delight.  Live video feeds were sent around the world over
  2909. Internet connections.  Webfoot, The Duck made an appearance.
  2910.  
  2911.   Special exhibits lined the walls.  Vendor100 was
  2912. spectacular to watch as WiseManager from Serenity Systems
  2913. instantly brought up icon after icon of Vendor100 software
  2914. on every machine during the network bootup.  Commercial-
  2915. grade overhead projectors threw large images onto the
  2916. auditorium screens.  The OS/2 space game Stellar Frontier
  2917. ran on a bank of machines.
  2918.  
  2919.   "We've accomplished what we set out to do," continued
  2920. Rollin White, "and we've again brought OS/2 knowledge and
  2921. products to the community, to both current users and new
  2922. users, so that OS/2 will continue to be recognized for what
  2923. it is - the best desktop operating system in the world
  2924. today."

  3113. We at Serenity Systems International were very encouraged 
  3114. by IBM's review of Stardock's OEM proposal for a client 
  3115. product. While we regret the decision by IBM not to execute 
  3116. the proposal at this time, we recognize the effort and 
  3117. resource expended reviewing the Stardock proposal. 
  3118.  
  3119. Serenity Systems has an OEM software agreement with IBM. We 
  3120. found the IBM process with Stardock so positive that we are 
  3121. preparing to explore a potential licensing agreement with 
  3122. IBM for a client product based on the Warp Server for 
  3123. e-business kernel.
  3124.  
  3125. The Serenity Systems focus is not the traditional fat PC 
  3126. client. Therefore, the client workstation requirements for 
  3127. the Serenity Systems' Managed Client(r) products are 
  3128. significantly different than Stardock's requirements. 
  3129. However, the relationship between Stardock and Serenity 
  3130. Systems is one of mutual support and cooperation. It is our 
  3131. hope that Stardock will participate in some form in any 
  3132. proposal to IBM.
  3133.  
  3134. Serenity Systems plans to announce a Statement of Direction 
  3135. regarding support for a Linux based Managed Client product. 
  3136. We want to make it clear that any such announcement is not 
  3137. a departure from, but an addition to, our OS/2 based 
  3138. client.
  3139.  
  3140. OS/2 Warp 4 is the superior desktop client OS for Intel PCs 
  3141. in the market today. A commentary explaining our Linux and 
  3142. OS/2 positioning appeared on http://32bitsonline.com last 
  3143. week and is still available for review as "I'll Chose 
  3144. OS/2!".

  3432. The September meeting will provide another especially good
  3433. opportunity for all our folks to come on out to see and learn
  3434. more about what some of the other OS/2 users are doing and to
  3435. share experiences and knowhow.

  3437. Other agenda items include SIG business matters, OS/2 news, new
  3438. software releases, Q&A session, software raffle, etc. An OS/2
  3439. system will be on hand for demos of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc.,
  3440. as time permits. Free light refreshments will also be available.

  3442. Mark the date and time: Wednesday, September 22, at 7:00pm, to
  3443. hear about all the new and exciting developments, or if you have
  3444. questions about OS/2 Warp and Java. OS/2 SIG meetings are open
  3445. and free for OS/2 users, their guests and all others interested
  3446. in learning about OS/2 and associated Java technology.
