Subj: Tape drive, drivers for OS2.
Hello Wolf,
WC> I have an ARCHIVE CORP. 'Python' Model 4326np tape
WC> drive at home , which contains and also is the "only"
WC> existing source of a small number of vital BBS programs
WC> for my (BBS) use. With other words I have to get some
WC> programs off the tape drive.
If the Tape Drive is a SCSI device, then you could try picking up the GTAK
package (the last version I saw was GTAK251,ZIP from Hobbes). In that package
is a driver that allows many tape device to be accessed using the GNU TAR
utility suite also included in GTAK, however because there are so many modes
of operating tape devices, you may have to try and find one that makes it
work. It supports many of the older drives around so if your drive is not
included in the "tested" list, as long as your device can answer to one of the
low level command sets often used by SCSI devices, you should be able to get
it to work. The main problem will be seeing if your Tape S/W can see the drive
using this driver...
I used GTAK for many years with an Archive Viper 2150 drive using 6250
catridges and it worked fine, even if I could not index into the tapes, at
least I could backup and restore AND do this from a Floppy boot to restore my
OS/2 Boot drive. What was more I could also read *nix TAR archives as well.
You may also like to check out the OS2HW Echo as well.
I hope this helps............pk.

In 1998, Stardock took the position that if IBM had no current
or projected plans for a new fat OS/2 client, that it was in the
interests of OS/2 users and the computing community in general that
a third-party should work with IBM to license OS/2 technology
on an OEM basis and make a new client available.
To that end, late last year, Stardock prepared a business plan and
opened negotiations with IBM. The wheels of bureacracy grind slowly,
but eventually it was up to "IBM" (executive level) to make the ultimate
call on proceeding.
For the past 6 months, Stardock and IBM have been working closely
together in hammering out the details of an OS/2 client. Everything
from potential names down to which minute components would or would
not be included. These meetings included multiple in person
meetings with IBM staff and executives here at Stardock's office
complex in Livonia Michigan.
With an agreement in principle in place, the last major hurdle
was this week in which the IBMers in favor of our proposal (mostly in
Austin) presented their case to IBM as a whole.
The call has been made -- there will be no new client from Stardock
and IBM has indicated that they have no plans for an OS/2 based
client of their own.
Though IBM indicated Stardock had the strongest proposal, they have
decided that it is currently not in IBM's or their customer's interests
to license any current OS/2 technology on an OEM-basis.
There was never any discord between IBM and Stardock over financials,
technical viability, target market, or the like. IBM has simply finally
made the decision that a new OS/2 client would be in conflict with
their strategic directions.
Stardock would like to extend a special thanks to all the IBMers
(and in particular Ken Christopher and Timothy Sipples) who went above
and beyond the call in working with us and going to bat inside IBM.
Remember when you meet folks like them, who are and have been
intimately involved with OS/2, that their hands may be just as tied
as yours when the IBM Corporation as a whole sets policy.
Everything that could be done was done.

good luck. I know of none. I use Pete Rocca's OLMS. It's DOS based, but it
does QWK, QWK-E, and BlueWave formats. Works fine here (most of the time).s

You need separate packages. Which I prefer, since then I can use the programs
I spent good money on.

Subj: OS/2 Upload Scanner
Ok all, this is maybe a DOH question, but bear with me.
I'm trying to seutp an upload scanner for the BBS. I've tried THDPRO,
but THDPRO/2 12.0 doesn't specify the -d paramater forthe
directory to extract files to. Thus unzip.exe fails, and thus it
returns an unsuccessfull result to the BBS.
anyone know of a way to get THDPRO 12.0 to give the -d paramater? OR
of an alternate upload scanner for OS/2?
Thanks!

There is such a program called IceCBV and it was made for RA BBSs and also
I think for ones that generate an EXITINFO.BBS file. But the program comes
with more features if you use RA, I think that this program works in
multi-node, but since I have not used it for quite a while, I don't
remember too well. Good luck :)

well, that was my point of view when... I had enough time to take daily care
of the bbs. Now I take my messagebase with me on my notebook to make some
messages when free time arises. Otherwise...
that's why I now look for a modern, decent, all-in-one bbs package keeping my
jam msgbase, a nice one with whistles and bells. I had lots of hopes for
Shotgun, but even GDS-net is down and no e-mail replies from author...
so you understand better my query :)

It's just the BBS package it the same style setup as RA as it's an actual
dropin replacement for RA 2.5x

Wish I could help with that one, but I still use OLMS. Been using it for so
long, and it works great, even under OS/2 that I never switched. I'll look
around though..

I think there is an update to 13. At least I have thd213_0.zip in my filebase.
But you don't need to specify the -d for unzip. Let thdpro do it's thing.
First it unpacks the archive to a directory. I think the 'temp' variable. Then
it moves everything to it's own personal "temp" directory. I just watched it
and it seemed to be thdpro.090 or something similar. It scans the files, and
then re-packs if necessary. then deletes the temporary stuff.
You don't even need to have the native scanners but they are nice to have. At
least the one from Macafee works.
Have a good day!!

I have a similar problem. I'm sure you'll find that the 'BLEED' is caused by
any DOS program, not just doors. I have just learned to deal with it, but I
have no solution. Perhaps reading a little furthur, I will see a reply to you
that will help. :)

I run multinode, and as far as I can tell, the 'BLEED' only occurs when the
modem is doing nothing. I haven't had any problems with users being
interrupted or hung up on while two people are logged in at the same time yet,
anyway. :)
