Hi Peter,
Just a note. Os2OM30.dll is just a general runtime DLL from IBM Visual
Age C++ compiler AFAIK.

Subj: Second try: Random mouse jumping and clicking problems...
From: Aaron Lawrence <aaronl@clear.net.nz>
Hi again,
I'm still on my mission to find a fix for the random mouse jumping and
clicking that I get under Warp 4 (FP 8). I would appreciate any
suggestions or comments.
I've since found someone (Richard Knapp) who said he knew many users who
had the same problem. However it definitely does seem that some systems
get it and some don't. Anyone else had here had it? Richard said that
those users who had it said it was still around with FP12...
This is a very obvious problem; while moving the mouse, every so often
it will jump halfway across the screen in a random direction, and
occasionally click one of the mouse buttons.
With an old Acer mouse this happens a few times in a minute. With a new
MS Intellimouse Explorer it happens almost constantly (every few
seconds) and there is usually more than one click (this makes the system
unuseable).
Both of these are plugged into a PS/2 port on an Asus P2B motherboard.
Both mice work *perfectly* under Windows 95 and NT.
One person suggested faulty hardware. I find it hard to believe that two
widely differing mice would have the same fault. But I could believe it
is some interaction amongst hardware; perhaps random interrupts from
some conflicting source. Does anything else ever use the PS/2 serial
IRQ? (12?) At one point I thought it might happen more during hard disk
(IDE) access, but it seems to happen even when nothing else is going on.
I only have one ISA card in the system, a modem set as COM3.
I also wondered if the OS/2 mouse driver occasionally misses data
packets or something; maybe this would become more pronounced at higher
port speeds; I guess that the new Explorer mouse uses a faster rate than
the older Acer one.
I guess I could go and find lots of different mice and see if they all
do it. Surely my co-workers don't actually need their mice :-)
In a hopeful mood I downloaded the mouse driver source code from OS/2
DDK... but the 850K of mostly assembler source code proved a little bit
confusing... :P
Richard Knapp mentioned that his Kensington mouse worked really well
with OS/2. Anybody else had experience with those mice?
Speculation? Guesses? Random incoherent babbling? All welcome!
TIA
Aaron

are supposed to contain the proper drivers. Once I unpack them what is

I could never get the online registration to work (proxy problems I

I saw this kind of problem once on a system (Warp 4 FP 5 or 6 I think)
that had a driver for a Logitech mouse installed and the person
switched it for a "Microsoft OEM mouse (one of the bent ones).
I changed the driver back to the default pointdd.sys and mouse.sys
and the problem went away.
One of my systems has a generic Logitech PS/2 mouse and
it has worked with no problems. I carry one around with me
to client sites in case one of their mice has a problem and
I just change th mouse.
I have one of the Kensington Orbit trackballs that emulates
a standard PS/2 mouse and it has worked flawlesly (except
when I dribble cookie crumbs into it). I just use the standard
mouse driver.
I've seen problems with mice on systems with high CPU
usage (usually DIVE applications at a high frame rate)
where the mouse pointer jumps and jiggles around but
I've never seen a "click of death occur".
Have you tried the various RMVIEW options to see if
there is some other device using the same IRQ
/D /DC /IRQ (those are the options I think). Check the
system boot screen where the BIOS displays the
IRQ's assigned to the PCI devices and see if
"Plug and Prey" has assigned something to IRQ 12.
There are any number of ISA SCSI cards that default
to IRQ 12.
Do the mice do this when they are plugged into
a different machine? Maybe the little connecter
cable for the PS/2 port is broken? You might
have a bent or broken pin in there. This is
unlikely if the system is dual booting to Win95
and/or WinNT on the same hardware....
You could just "trade" mice with a co-worker
and see if they have the same problem, and
if they do, get them to fix the problem :-)

Hiya Lorne,
Thanks for the ideas, and BTW thanks for being so active around OS/2
newsgroups!

Where does pointdd.sys come into it? I understand that mouse.sys does the
basic port handling and communication with the mouse...

I'll see if I can find a Logitech mouse... and some others!

It's a funny thing. I was looking at the code for the mouse driver and tho I
can't see where to start in testing it, it's interesting to see how many odd
specific things there are in there. Various little tricks to handle different
breeds of mouse, slightly different data formats, third button handling,
different port speeds. Very impressive actually... it's a whole little world
of it's own!

Ah but that is interesting. Why should *anything* affect the pointer? Except
for a program specifcally setting the location...

I have now. Nothing wrong around 12, but there does seem to be something odd
about IRQ 3:
rmview /d /d /irq
RMVIEW: Current Boot Detected view
IRQ Level = 1 PCI Pin = NONE Flg = EXCLUSIVE IBM Keyboard Controller
IRQ Level = 3 PCI Pin = D Flg = SHARED PCI Device 0M-03-00

IRQ Level = 14 PCI Pin = NONE Flg = MULTIPLEXED ST506 HardDisk
IRQ Level = 15 PCI Pin = NONE Flg = MULTIPLEXED ST506 HardDisk
Using just rmview /irq shows that IRQ 3 has been assigned to my Aureal Vortex
1 PCI sound card (which incidentally isn't working properly either ... as we
were discussing in c.o.o.multimedia :-) so that's something to look at.) But I
don't really understand the difference between these two views...
rmview /irq
IRQ Level = 0 PCI Pin = NONE Flg = EXCLUSIVE TIMER_CH_0

I'll check the BIOS PCI assignments shortly but it's probably OK...

My previous sound card was an SB16 with SCSI... and I see I still have the
driver in config.sys... aha152x.add by the looks. I'll rem out that and
os2scsi.dmd and see...

Which files do I need in the sequence from ALT-F1 on

Yes, there is no other assignment of IRQ 12.
Didn't make any difference removing the scsi driver (which I guess probably
wasn't
loading anyway, so wouldn't make any difference).
(I'll post about Vortex problems in .multimedia...)

IBM has a mouse (rebranded Logitech) with the cat's tongue pointer (as in
Thinkpads) and and the driver you describe is for it. It works as expected
(well kind of). I don't know if the same driver would work with a real
Logitech mouse.

BTW. I don't really use the mouse as it is too small for me.

however. The middle button doesn't work, however.

Do you have WatchCat installed with activation via keyboard? A jumping
mouse is a known problem with PS/2 mice under this condition. You'd
better use a hardware switch (and it's more reliable, too).

I have only seen this work within the latest version of Netscape. Like
when you browse newsgroups. You can scroll one window while the mouse is
in another. Other than that, it is useless.

Why do you equate a 14,400 modem with 57,600 bps comm speed? AFAIK
they both count in bps so the only factor to account for on the line
speed is any compression that the modem may perform. Is a factor of
four compression realistic?

Nah, v3.0 will run a 33.6K modem as I know from personal use. My sister
uses 3.0 and gets 53K connects all the time (lucky pup!)
Are you talking about the line speed, or the connect rate from the PC to
the modem?

The only time I have seen anything like this is when the CPU is at
100% utilization or some device driver is hogging the system. For
instance, the NovaStor backup program's parallel device driver can
completely stop responsiveness for brief periods a side effect being the
mouse makes peculiar jumps about the screen. Never had random clicks
though.
I've almost always used Logitech mice and have never been disappointed
in either their operation or reliability. Note that IBM mice are made by
Logitech. Although I have used an older MS mouse and had no problems
with it, either. The only other brand I ever tried was Dexxa which,
again, is a Logitech variant (cheap one); it worked, too.

I personally found the mouse wheel a useless feature, as have others.
Aside from the personal bias I never had a problem getting the wheel to
work as advertised, even with the original driver.
The driver is _only_ for ps/2 mice. Do you have one? Or is it plugged
into a COM port?
As to the third button, could something be programmed for it? Normally
the only thing might happen is a change of focus to wherever it is
clicked.

You can use the ICMP fix to update to 5.3008/5.3001/5.3011.
You can install MPTS (5.4) FixPak WR08610 to upgrade to 6.1002/6.1000/6.1001
(TCP/IP stack 4.2(0)).
+ ICMP fix 6.1003/6.1000/6.1005
+ ICMP and routing fix 6.1003/6.1000/6.1008
You can apply MPTS (5.5) FixPak WR08620 on top of WR08610 to upgrade to
6.2001/6.2000/6.2002 (TCP/IP stack 4.21).

Help wanted as this is doing my brain in!
This is the text from the xf86os2.log file generated when I use startx
from a command prompt:
xf86-OS/2: xf86MapVidMem succeeded: (ScreenNum= 0, Base= 0xa0000, Size=
0x10000
xf86-OS/2: OsMouse has 3 button(s).
xf86-OS/2: Started Mouse event thread, Tid=6
xf86-OS/2: Mouse Queue created, rc=0
Error in server select! e=-1
The last line is repeated, I don't know how many times, but the size of
the file is over 4Mb! The above is from the simplest VGA setup with the
VGA server and when I try it after setting up the SVGA server for my
Riva128 video card, the file grows to over 9 Mb.
The X screen appears but is blank, without a console. CHECKINSTALL
confirms that everything seems to be correct. The strange thing is that
I installed XFree86 3.3.5 a month ago with no problems (I tried a few
commands and the XFree86 version of Tetrix), but before I started
tweaking things and really getting into it, I bought another (6.5Gb)
hard disk and installed Linux on it in order to evaluate the two
systems. I changed the original disk to the secondary IDE and couldn't
get Warp 3 (with Fixpack 32) to recognise the partitions I created on
the new disk, of course, I now know all about the large disk limitations
of Warp 3. Anyway, I tried swapping the disks around, played with
Fdisk, re-installed Linux (various flavours) and, in doing so, managed
to wipe clean the partition on which I had XFree86 and all my other OS/2
apps. So I started again but with the above result.
I've read everything there is to read in the distribution without
gleaning any clues, checked config.sys, and even gone through the whole
installation process again (twice) with exactly the same result. If the
problem is something obvious, I'm damned if I can fathom it out. The
only odd thing I've come across is this; when I use File Phoenix to scan
drive C, it doesn't stop scanning and I can't stop it except by using
the Reset button - normal Shutdown doesn't work neither does
Ctrl+Alt+Del. I've run CHKDSK /F several times, HPFSOPT, and Checkini
from WPtools in a desperate clutching-at-straws attempt to right
matters. Perhaps I buggered up some C partition information which is,
somehow, affecting XFree86 although I don't see how because it's on
Drive G. I can't start again; format, partition and re-install OS/2 on
the original disk as Fixpack 32 was on the partition that got lost .
However, I've ordered the latest Fixpack CD from BMT and will re-install
then. Until that happy day I would be grateful for any guidance that
would point me in the right direction.
Thanks for reading this.

I detest *mice*, but trackballs do seem to be useful. The docs for the
ScrollMouse driver explicitly mention the Logitech device.
The TrackMan Wheel I bought has a USB connector with a USB-to-PS/2

Correction: The docs mention the Logitech MouseMan+, not the TrackMan.
Are they so different? There were not separate drivers for Logitech

Hmm... Same mouse I am using here. I actually got the little wheel
dohickey to work. Of course, everytime I install the Scrollmouse Driver,
the install program eats my *.ini files, so I have to restore from a
backup. Thus no nifty scroll mouse settings page or program. But the
wheel does work in all my programs. Only Netscape behaves the way I want
it to, as in everything else the wheel moves the actual cursor instead of
the scrollbars.
Oh well. Now if only the install program wouldn't eat the desktop...

If you have the ASUS K7M motherboard, you should install the KM1007 BIOS
if it is not already installed. The BIOS and the flash program are
available at ASUSs FTP site at:
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/slota/
Otherwise, the ASUS motherboard should find all of your memory properly
in both Windows and OS/2. If it does not, your memory may be faulty.
It must be PC100 or PC133 grade memory meeting the specifications in the
ASUS motherboard manual. You might want to look at that to be sure.
I have been using OS/2 v4 with an overclocked Athlon and ASUS K7M for
over a month with zero problems. It is easily the best hardware I have
ever had for OS/2.

At least you haven't read the FAQ which instructs you *not* to cite only
parts of the whole server output.
The error message points to a problem with either EMX or TCP/IP.

Well, since you didn't tell us too much of the relevant things, your
conclusion that an existing problem on C: won't affect XFree86 on G:
can't be made. Example: Swap on C, or TMP on C, or alike. Checkinstall
verifies that you have made some settings from the README file correctly,
but won't check a working network, for instance.

Thanks Lorne, I have a 300watt power supply but I will run Thermoprotect

The mouseman is a mouse, the trackman a trackball. The driver
probably works with either. I have a trackball and it works fine

You're not running the Asus Athlon MoBo are you ?
It seems all other Athlon MoBo's are ACPI 1 compliant,
rather than ACPI 2.
That means only Win95/98 and NT4.0 can find more than 64MB.
Daniela has written a patch for this:
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/patches/patchldr.zip
Which replaces the OS2LDR, so it behaves like a windos LDR
and even non-windos users have the pleasure of using more
than 64MB.
The OS/2 setting in your BIOS is a fossil back from the OS/2
2.0 era.

Is this BIOS version a back-level version or an updated version? In other
words is it a fix put out by ASUS or was it made at a time before it was
broken? I'm curious because I'm thinking about performing a similar upgrade
and I want to know if such a thing will be available when I'm ready to upgrade
or if there is a chance it could be pulled.

If the BIOS check doesn't find all your memory consistently then it is
grossly faulty (motherboard, BIOS or memory, can't tell which).

Yep, many people have had the same experience. Slow but sure, like an

you want to kill the elephant for ever, go to the directory
'os2\install\installed

You obviously have hardware problems. When no system will install then
you have to look over the hardware and try to determine what is causing it
by elimination. You could start with memory and do a vga install with the
least you can manage. Who is your mb manufacturer???

I have had no problems with the Logitech TrackMan, but being in need of
another trackball I bought the "wheel" variety (I am not sure that the
non-wheel ones are available any more). The problem is that the wheel
does not seem to do anything, even with the drivers that purport to
support it.

Been riding on Fpk-12 for a few weeks now. Suddenly,
couple of days ago, the following quit working in
OS/2 windows:
c:\> echo "hello world" > lpt1
Weird thing is this: it works in a shell PRIOR to WPS
getting launched. It does NOT work AFTER the WPS
is running, whether I issue the command in a VIO, or
in a FullScreen session. Consequently, my VIO mode
editor is not printing.
Good boy that I am, I have a maintenance partition
with a known-to-be-good installation of Warp-4 fpk-12
also. All's well there. The following are the same
in both sides of the fence:
PRINT01.SYS
PRINT02.SYS
PARALLEL.SNP (the Plug'n Pray snooper)
"Full Hardware Detection" has been enabled all along
in the Hardware Manager object.
Spooler object seems ok.
Any suggestions?

The KM1007 BIOS is an upgrade to the BIOS that originally shipped with
Rev 1.04 of the K7M motherboard. The current shipping versions probably
already have this version of the BIOS but versions shipped 3 or 4 weeks
ago may not. ASUS has also released a beta BIOS which is also at the
link above under 'BETA.' ASUS typically does not pull a BIOS unless it
is defective. The flash utility (also at the above link) provides a
means to save your current BIOS before upgrading which is something I
would strongly recommend doing. So you can reflash the old BIOS if a
newer BIOS causes problems. Generally ASUS BIOS upgrades are pretty
good and you should not expect problems.

I need to run my Backup Program via a DOS boot disk
The program is Fastback.
Also, if I boot DOS from disk will files still be in 'use'

I have used scanpci for determining the hardware. The program shows ESS
Technology (device unknown in the program's database) deviceID 0x1978,
revision ID 0x10. It identifies the device as a multimedia device, audio
using IRQ line 11 and PCI INT pin A at 0x0000fc00 IO port.
The driver's installation inserted a line in config.sys :
DEVICE = x:\MMOS2\MAESTR2E.SYS N:MASTRO1$
with x: the drive letter where OS/2 is installed.

Once PMSHELL is running, your port is controlled by a Port Driver,
derived from a file named PARALLEL.PDR. Open the Properties notebook
of one of your Printer Objects, preferably your Default Printer, to
the Output Port page, and make sure you have LPT1 selected, or at
least greyed out (showing it is selected by another Printer Object.)
See if you can print to this printer via PMSHELL, either by dragging a
file and dropping it on the printer, or by printing through a menu
selection from an application.

Compare your CONFIG.SYS files, too. You must have one of the
PRINT0x.SYS files loaded as a BASEDEV= statement, probably PRINT01.SYS
unless you've got a MCA (Microchannel, or PS/2) system.

The docs say that it's a binary edited ESS1968 driver with the '6' turned
into a '7'.

José reported the volume to be very low. The need to turn on the
external amp would explain this ...

It's not working on my system, that's why I started this thread.
The driver loades, but I cannot play any wav-sound. When I
load a way into the audio editor and start playback, the red line,
which usually indicates the progress, does not move.
My system is a Gateway Solo 9300 notebook.

Trevor, Meinolf,
my ingrediences are an Adaptec 2930U2 SCSI-Controller with an
IBM DNES 9.1 Gig LVD HD. Today I've tried to use the logical
volume manager from WARP 4.5. It comes up with the aic78u2.sys
but might ignore the driver because it doesn't load the os2cdrom.dmd
(so I can't access the CDROM).
When I'm using LINUX fdisk (after I've made the partitions with LVM)
it shows me the missing 720 MB and I can use them. When I restart
LVM it gives the message that the partition table might be corrupt.

Are you saying you and your sister are still using *un-fixpacked Warp 3* with
Y2K 12 days away? Yikes! The original poster was asking about connecting from
the shrinkwrap installation phase. Then he ought to get fp33-or-above like
everybody else.
In plain Nov. 1994 Warp 3 out-of-the box, the line-connect speed had to be
set to 57600 or less. Regardless of the hardware in use. Using the mode
command
to set it to 115200, as was normal for 28,800 or above modems would return an
error. Sam Detweiler mentioned at some point that he had made considerable
improvements to the com.sys driver back in the mid-fixpack 20's to remove this
limitation. Certainly Warp 4 and the various Merlin betas (early '96-Oct. 96)
all included the improved driver. If you've fixpacked your Warp 3 box any time
in the last 3 years then you're doubtlessly running the improved drivers too.
No port limitations there. Heck, they even allow my 2.1 setup (which I'm about
to finally Y2K-retire with a mild tear in my eye) to connect and run above
50K.
Happy Jan. 1 1900.

I would suggest you get an OS/2 backup program if you are running OS/2.
A DOS program will not see long filenames or extended attributes, and if you
boot from a DOS disk you won't see an HPFS partition either.

I'd appreciate your recommendations. This is what
I'd like to get from a soundcard:
--COMES WITH OS/2 DEVICE DRIVER.
--Takes electret microphones input.
--Enables the VoiceType features of Warp 4; in other
words, it has the required sampling rate, etc.
--When returning from a SLEEP/STANDBY state of APM

process .WAV files after a STANDBY!
As you can see, I'm not looking for "CBS-Recording-

reliable card for OS/2.

Look for any board using chipsets from one of these companies.
ESS Technology Inc.
OS/2 drivers for their various audio chipsets (ESS 1868PnP, 1869, etc).
Good driver providing full duplex audio (simultaneous recording &
playing) as well as great simultaneous OS/2 & WinOS/2 audio.
Crystal Semiconductor
Audio chipsets with good OS/2 drivers.
Aureal
Makers of PCI audio chips with native OS/2 support. Their 8820 A3D chip
is used in cards by Xitel, Turtle Beach, Diamond and others. NOTE:
Aureal claim these are reference drivers only--you should contact your
card manufacturer for specific drivers.

IIRC it may be included with one of the fixpacks - have a look in the
various readme files that come with the fixpacks. Readme.1st and
readme2 are the most likely ones. Alternatively take a look at IBM's

Boot your computer from DOS (REAL DOS) and insert a floppy disk.
At the C:\ prompt, type:
FORMAT A: /S
You can't do it from OS/2 ... you need to do it from DOS or

Hello,
Recently I did something foolish and the partition tables on my main

Doesn't matter which brand or model you buy. In less than a year IBM will
issue a fixpak breaking the product you chose, then have the odacity to
blame a bug in the device driver which never changed.
Here's an idea! Buy one that doesn't work at all today and never did. In
about a year or so the "compile it once & ship it" development style no
riding herd over fixpaks will probably introduce a bug into Warp which
allows your card to magically start working.
You'll be way ahead of the game then.

A nice feature of sharing BOOKMARK.HTM between platforms is that the

The Trackman I had was a bus model. It was shipped prior to the PS/2
connector style being invented.
As to your BA/2 comment there are lots of people who not just think that
product sucks, but can prove it repeatedly. There are also quite a few
people who have lost their jobs for buying that product. You will notice
that in an effort to avoid further criminal charges the manufacturer
doesn't post spam out in the newsgroups anymore...assuming you bother to
look. When I find something that bad I play hard. When consumer
protection agencies receive repeatable physical proof of products not
living up to advertisements they play harder...but the post office plays
hardest of all.

I don't know what trackman you bought, but I have a Trackman and a
Trackman+. Both work fine under OS/2, hooked into the regular PS/2
port.
But then again I expected as much from the only guy in the world who
thinks BackAgain/2 sucks.

The phrase should have been 'used' as neither of us run it anymore. We are
both giving up computers after Dec 31st anyway, so who cares.
Old blueWarp 3 out of the box does 33.6K with no problems.

You can try several things. I assume you either don't have utility
floppies or you were unsuccessful with FDISK from the utility floppies.
Partition Magic from a DOS boot floppy would be my next choice. I keep
one of those floppies made up just in case something happens.

Roland,
FDISK reports the space as free, as does Partition Magic, from a floppy.

I'm not aware of any quick-fix utility for that purpose. It is, however,
possible to adjust the partition table so that the HPFS partition is
defined once again.
You'll need a sector editor, of course.
From there, what you need to do depends on what kind of partition it is.

DFSEE (freeware, on Hobbes) can do a lot to restore a partition table
as can OS2CLU (same place) if it's not too far gone.

Right now Indelible Blue has a special on AOpen soundcards which
have OS/2 drivers on the mfg. site, not in the box. I appears to
have what you want but mine just came today and is not yet installed
so I am not sure of that. Hope so, as I bought it so the voice app
in Warp would work. I got voice working with a SB Awe64Value a year
ago and never want to go through that again. The Indelible Blue or
AOpen web pages would probably have the specs you need.

I had the same problem. It seems that the K7M has problems with some
kinds of keyboards. To check this simply unplug your keyboard and and
press the power button. If all goes well, this is your problem. BTW I

From: "Austy Garhi (n. d'e-pl.)" <tgal@pobox.com>
Seems I need to restate what I mean:
The Netsc. 4.61 has toolbar icons that correspond to submenu
items of the top level menu that looks like this:
File Edit View Go Communicator Help Links
Some of such icons in the toolbar are for "go back,"
"go forward," go home," "reload," etc., which look like arrows,
the little house, and the arrow hunched back over itself.
However, there are many submenu items which do not have a
corresponding icon or "button" on the toolbar: I would like to
know how can I add some of those missing submenu items to my
toolbar. Observe that I am not talking about the BOOKMARKS
"Personal Toolbar Folder" toolbar (I already know how to assign
bookmarks to the toolbar for bookmarks).
I hope this does not mudddle further the issue :) .

Okay, no, unless our Netscape team comes up with something, I haven't
seen any reference here to adding more buttons.
In fact, they take up so much real estate I turn them off, routinely
on every platform with every browser, and I thought most people were
doing that. I even cringe when I see teevee shows illustrated with a
browser on a website with those big dumb buttons taking up 20% of the
visible screen.

You must be extremely careful when operating on large IDE hard drives
from different boot systems. DOS generally uses the geometry reported
by the BIOS, while OS/2 uses the geometry reported by IBM1S506.ADD.
That driver has had several build levels that report large drives
differently, and this can lead to serious problems.
The OS/2 solution is to make sure that *every* system you are booting
into has the same, identical, build of IBM1S506.ADD, preferably the
latest. If you have a partition that was FDISKed or modified with
PQmagic under an earlier build, then you'd better save off an archive
of the data on that drive so that you can restore it if things get
boogered.
Same holds true if you've been using some of the DANI driver builds, I
think.
And sometimes you can recover from a problem by booting back into a
system that uses the build that was used to FDISK or modify the
partition before. Sometimes.

The GRADD package doesn't clean up after itself.
REM GRADD.SYS and perhaps VMANWIN.SYS in CONFIG.SYS and try again..

Hardly. I've used Warp for years now and I do use other operating
systems. Warp 4 with fp8 was one of the most stable OS's this side of DR
DOS I've ever used. I do use other operating systems, but over the course
of the years have accumulated somewhere between $30,000-40,000 worth of
development tools and applications mostly cross platform, but hosted on
Warp.
In the releases since FP8 the fixpak development team has degenerated into
a non caring, non testing, ship anything kind of group which would make MS
proud.
Around the end of March I will be forced to evaluate the OS's I currently
use for development. If I wasn't in the middle of writing a book on VMS
development and hadn't started it using my Warp toolset I would be making
that decision now.

I'm not arguing the point that "You can't do it from OS/2 ... you need to
do it from DOS ...", but I think one can do it from OS/2. I've done it in
the past, mostly to see if I could. Can't remember the details, I'm
afraid, but I have the disk here with me. Using the dos boot disk, I can
use the "boot dos from A:" feature. In fact, I might have done just that
using the MSDos install disk to make the system disk.

How did you make them?
I've always used DISKCOPY for the Warp 3 and Warp 4
diskettes. The diskette images are also on the CD and
you can make new copies using the CDINST.CMD file
that is on the CD in the root directory.
If these are WSeB diskettes, you have to make them
from the CD as they are in a format that diskcopy does
not like.

Use the Installation CD-Rom and Makedisk feature. It will make the whole set
for you. You might want to include any updated or additional hardware
drivers necessary for your system (install disks don't support many new
systems out of the box). Also, don't forget to make emergency system disks.
They are more useful in times of trouble.

Though I already figured this out, since I've been using
OS/2 since 1994, I'd like to thank you for your answers.
I shall explain what I'm trying to accomplish:
I have WSeB running on a computer which hasn't got
VoiceType on it's CD's. There's another cd of
Warp 4.0 (Merlin beta), which has got it. Now I'm trying
to install the VoiceType of the Merlin beta on the harddrive
with WSeB. There seems to be no solution though...;-((

Stephan,
I tried doing the same as you are and figured out the fastest way would be to
do the following:
make a clean Warp 4 installation (i.e. no VoiceType);
take a snapshot of the machine's CONFIG.SYS and relevant .INI files;
install VoiceType
take note of the CONFIG.SYS and .INIs changes;
zip the VoiceType directory;
copy the whole installation to the WSeB machine.
Even though I was able to make VoiceType work under WSeB, there were some
glitches that I was not able to sort out. VoiceType's performance under WSeB
was never equal to Warp4 so I just decided to wipe it out from my disk.
Regards,
Roberto

:) I'm with you on this. But, between the traffic light and the
"N"
shooting stars, one can fit an additional dozen icons, using
real estate that as it is now is just a VACANT LOT. After all,
many
of the submenu items don't even have CUA keys acceleration. And,
as
Murphy's Law always gets its way, the CUA keys that DO exist are
assigned to the most useless or obscure menu items, such as
"increase
font," "decrease font," "page source," "page info." How about
using
the CUA keys ACCELERATORS to ACCELERATE access to features BURIED
3 submenu layers deep, such as the useful menus to shuffle
different ways of listing newsgroups news items: VIEW / MESSAGES
/ ALL;
or VIEW / MESSAGES / UNREAD; etc. . . . "where was that menu to
reorganize the news list? was it down Edit? nope; was it down
Message?
nope; was it Communicator maybe? no; down View? then, down
Sort?
nope; down View, Message? ah, yes! . . ." I'm sure you get the
picture.

This appears to be called the "Navigation Toolbar". At the far left,
you'll see a little hatched area. Click on it and the Navigation
Toolbar is turned off. End of vacant lot.

You don't seem to be getting any good answers here. Perhaps, if you
give us a few more details, like what modem? internal, or external?
What comm program are you using? What init strings are you using? How
is the Com port configured (address, IRQ)? What other Com ports are
physically in the machine? What is connected to them? What are their
addresses and IRQs? And, anything else that might have something to do
with the problem.
Most of the time, this type of problem is caused by trying to share
resources (like IRQs, or addresses), with another (possibly unused)
device (usually, either an unused Com port, or something like a sound
card, or a printer port). Windows, generally, just ignores such
things, but OS/2, being a REAL multitasking system, will not ignore
such things, and will have problems.
More details = More help.

Not exactly a parser, but you want ConfigMaint/2. Look for
CFGMT100.ZIP, and the latest update CFGUPD4.ZIP. Both should be found
at HOBBES:

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT USING A DOS PROGRAM TO BACKUP AN OS/2 SYSTEM!
(If I could make these letters bigger, I would).
You WILL be VERY dissapointed if you ever need to restore it. (It can
be done, with a LOT of screwing around, but you had better understand
EXACTLY what you are doing in order to accomplish the desired
outcome).
Get a real OS/2 backup program, so you can backup all of the files
with long file names, and keep the Extended Attributes attached to the
files. If you don't do this, your restored system just isn't going to
work, and a DOS backup program will NOT do this.
I prefer BackAgain/2 (BackAgain/2000 has just been released). Check
out:
http://www.cds-inc.com/
for more details. Even the command line BACKUP and RESTORE (the OS/2
versions, NOT the DOS versions) are better than ANY DOS (or windows)
backup program. You may want to check out HOBBES for other options:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/
It is possible to create a bootable DOS diskette under OS/2, but the
exercise is not worth the effort. Just boot real DOS, and do a normal
format, with /S to transfer the system files to the diskette.
Hope this helps...

Read what it says. "The server has exited or crashed...". You won't
see such a message, unless the server hasn't really exited. And afterwards
read the FAQ about complete server messages. And while we are there,
LATEST.OS2 might be also a good idea.

Well ... you learn something new everyday :-)
I just downloaded bootable.zip from hobbes, and followed the (very
simple) instructions .... and it worked.
Still requires that you have a bootable DOS diskette to start with
... but it sure beats installing a bootable DOS partition just to
create bootable DOS Diskettes.
Thanks, Ian.

Hi,
Just baought a iomega USB ZIP-100. Works fine with the drivers from
the DeviceDriver site from IBM.
But there seems to be a catch :o(
Data transfer to/from the ZIP is extremly slow (takes about 30-35 min.
to copy 100MB!)
Anyone an idea how to speed this up?
And anyone an idea how to use HPFS on those ZIP disks?
So far I con only use FAT.
TIA.

Using IDE and SCSI drives, you would FDISK the disk to create a
primary partition. Not sure if this works with the USB models.

Ok,
thanks for your help (Trevor and Meinolf) but today I've got
an E-Mail from Adaptec which says that the AHA2930 controller
neither is nor will be supported by OS2. Is should buy either
a different adapter or run a different OS - DOS/WIN-xx is
supported. It reminds me of OS2-2.x where I brought the
hardware acording to the OS.
Well, thanks anyway

Yeah, and cars have a lot of trouble flying too.
Use the product that works for you, under the conditions that you need
to use it in. If you need something that will fly, you don't want to
buy a car (unless it is that one that James Bond had <g>).
Personally, I have used various versions of BA/2 for some time now
(since version 1.1), and have never had any problems (other than a few
self inflicted problems) with BA/2. I did some beta testing on
BA/2000, and most of that looks pretty good. I am not too impressed
that it cannot read older Disk based backups (it will read older tape
backups, apparently), but that support has been promised for sometime
next year.
I have ordered BA/2000, and I am awaiting the upgrade.

I have the trackman marble+ model t cl 13. The first 3 versions of the
IBM scroll driver didn't work, the fourth did. The wheel works fine,
although the middle button (pressing down on the wheel) doesn't do
anything.

I'm being picky here....but surely what they actually mean (but don't
want to say!) is that the AHA2930 does not support OS/2....not the

There was a "dosbox" fix necessary for Warp 3's tcpip to run
Netscape v. 3 and above. This fix seems to be currently
available from IBM at (now take a deep breath):
http://service5.boulder.ibm.com/pspfixpk.nsf
/FixPaks%5CAll+By+Product?OpenView&Start=1&Count=300&Expand=161#161
The files contained in this fix may be easily copied to their
appropriate homes in the \tcpip directory structure and you
should have no further problems with Netscape through 4.08.
One must also check as to whether there is a text file
named "resolv" in the \tcpip\dos\etc directory which
contains the IP address of your ISP's name server.
Or you could use the native OS/2 versions of Netscape,
which run just as well (or badly) on Warp 3 as they do on Warp 4.

Does the scrolling function (using the wheel) work? The one I have works
fine except for the scroll function.
Just to confuse matters: when I wnet looking on the Logitech Web site, I
found no mention of the "TrackMan Marble Wheel" (the name on the device
I bought at Staples), only the "TrackMan Marble+". I have seen the
latter in other stores, and they look identical, but the Model Number on
mine is different from the Model Number mentioned on the Logitech site.
I wonder if they did a special "Crippled" version that Staples could
sell at a lower price? I have a question in to Logietceh to see if I can
solve the mystery.
Further: when I go to IBM's OS/2 Device Driver page (the www one, rather
than the ftp site) and look up Logitech devices, I get the impression
that this one is intended to work only with a USB port, not with the
PS/2 port.

Subj: Help: TCPIP getting messed up
From: Sushenjit Bandyopadhyay <bandyo_nospam@wam.umd.edu>
I have no understanding of TCPIP, so please be patient.
The System: Warp 4, FP 12, TCPIP 4.02w with dialup to internet with
DOIP. No NIC.
The problem: From time to time upon dialup nothing works. I think it
happens if some application tries to connect to the net when there is
no connection (but I cannot reproduce it.) When this happens netstat
-a shows:
addr 0.0.0.0 interface 10 mask 0 broadcast
0.0.0.0
addr 128.8.xx.yyy interface 10 mask ffff0000 broadcast
128.8.x.yyy
addr 127.0.0.1 interface 0 mask ff000000 broadcast
127.0.0.1
The problem is the first line. It only appears when the problem
occurs.
Questions: How can I get rid of the reference to 0.0.0.0? What is
the correct syntax for route delete in this case? Is there any other
way to get rid of 0.0.0.0?
What may be adding this 0.0.0.0 to the system? How do I stop it? I
can reboot and it will work for a days until it comes back. Please
any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have a Aureal chipped, AU8830A2, soundcard (VideoLogic

but no OS/2 specific drivers. I doubt if this card will be much
use
for any OS/2 systems I do as VideoLogic have stated that they no
longer

A rethink is is order. Whilst VideoLogic have produced
soundcards
with the earlier Aureal chips the tech support have stated that
none of
these came with OS/2 drivers either. It seems that I should
strike this
producer of the list unless anyone can provide any info on

Terratec used to provide soundcards with OS/2 drivers, I

have not seen anything of them for about a year. Have they been
forced
to leave the scene? The other areas are as you say; look for a
Crystal
chipped, ESS chipped card that a manufacturer is supporting for
the OS/2
platform. Can anyone supply a few names or leads for me to

Go to the IBM home page, www.ibm.com. Click on the downloads link then the
OS/2
Drivers link (Bookmark this one. Its where you go for all OS/2 drivers.) then
the
printers and plotters link then the Hewlett-Packard link. That brings up a
list of
the HP printers. I saw the 660C in that list. Did not see 710C.

I tested it under the conditions I needed it to work under. It failed
miserably. Thankfully they are off now selling into the Windows market.
That market is used to really buggy software. Until FP9 and later OS/2
users were pretty immuned to a buggy OS.

Seth,
The easiest way to go is to use Powerquests Drive Copy. No detailed
instructions or warnings are necessary, except that when expanding the
partitions you have to stay within the operating systems limits. E.g. a
FAT partition can't be bigger than 2.1GB.

Hi Dave,
Yep, sort of ;o)
My chipset is a Intel BX from Gigabyte (6BXS). But I do run in
problems recently:
I can activate the drive but changing the medium leads to a WPS
lock-up once the driver's icon is double-clicked :o(
It worked before though.
But anyway half an hour for 100MB copying is as slow as the old and
crappy OAD parallel port driver from iomega.
BTW, I just bought a f...ing iomega product because of the needed
compatibility :o(((

They are still making very good cards, but no OS/2 drivers. The XLerate
(not XLerate Pro!) has a Vortex 1 chip. They are also using ESS Solo-1
for their 128 i PCI soundcard. And some of the still available ISA cards
(32/96, EWS64L/XL) have Crystal chips.
