The one he's talking about gets you:
D:\mywork\java -fullversion
JAVA.EXE full version "JDK 1.1.8 IBM build o118-19991204 (JIT enabled: javax

Thanks, Brian, for giving it a shot - the only hope is if enough people
do it, someone at IBM may think 'maybe there really *is* something wrong' one
day.
In the meantime I use a device driver which comes with the Graham
Utilities called 'Cleanup.sys' which allows you to put a line in CONFIG.SYS
to remove any file you list on the DEVICE= line; in this case CHKDSK.LOG. I
don't remove FOUNDx directories since there may actually be something there I
want.
The real crime here is that I am sure there have been OS/2 users who gave
up on it because of this ridiculous bug; it took me about a month to figure
it out myself.
Here is my system:
Intel Pentium III, 500MHz, 256MB SDRAM
Adaptec 7890 SCSI U2W
Matrox G200 AGP 16MB
3COM TX905C NIC
Crystal 4614 based PCI sound
Plextor 40x SCSI CDROM2
Yamaha CDR102
2 - Quantum 9GB U2W drives
Seagate STT8000 SCSI tape drive
US Robotics 56K voice modem ISA
I have had other computers with the same problem. The one factor that all
of them had in common was wide SCSI controllers by Adaptec. There is a
reported problem with the Adaptec drivers (AIC7870 and AIC78U2) and chkdsk in
that if a drive is dirty, and is formatted HPFS, and is set to autocheck, the
chkdsk on boot runs *very* slowly (for me about 15 min. on 4GB). If you boot
to diskettes (or any other 'clean' partition) and run chkdsk from the command
line for the dirty drive it takes far less time (about 90 seconds on my same
4GB partition). The problem only shows up on a boot. This makes me suspicious
that our current chkdsk problem may be related.
It would be interesting if the Adaptec drivers could be implicated by
others...

Hi Peter,
Just a note. Os2OM30.dll is just a general runtime DLL from IBM Visual
Age C++ compiler AFAIK.

Alot of times, the newer functionality and usability of the later versions of
Warp 4.0 and 4.5 are directly applicable to 3.0. No "if's", "ands" or
"buts"...
it does work.

Dave,
No problem, I gave it another shot sending a more cryptic note about how
I could not ring the USA number. They simply responded with how to get
my local number.
Yes,if you get this problem it is very frustrating. I had to give up using
Object Navigator for about a month until I found the solution.
Speaking of solutions, I have received about 5 workarounds now and the
amazing thing is they are all different. Inventive lot are we not!
I do have the Graham Utilities so I will test yours out.
My system is completely different to yours. The only scsi I have is the
small internal one that drives a ZIP100.
The only thing I think we can do from here is to post a note about once month.
I have got some mail from people who have missed the start of this discussion.
I think this highlights how valuable this forum is.
Thanks............Brian

I had one problem after I applied the 8620 fix over 8610 - and it is a
fix, where wr08610_conv is a full refresh. In this one case, I got
really flakey bootups unless I used the F2 to display the load
progress. Doing a little playing I found that there was some kind of
race condition in the startup sequence. It was probably the race they
put the semaphore file in to stop conflicts (between the MPTS and
TCP/IP initialization). Anyway, I had problems with a couple of
machines only but the problem was repeatable in each case. There are
also a couple of files you want to grab for the 8610 version.
NSLOOKUP.EXE and AFNB.SYS, as well as SLIP.EXE were the files, IIRC,
and you can find these on the ps ftp site. I don't remember if they
are on the 8620 disks or not, but these will blow up on some netstat
commands, using nslookup, and slip.exe won't work right off with 8610.

Oh BLESS YOU, Brad!!! An explanation that makes
sense. The other guys seemed to lose sight of the
fact that I already HAVE Java. I want to ADD Swing.
Installing the new Java updates won't add Swing to my
system. They are unrelated activities.
Although I will also get the Java updates.

I think you are overlooking the little word 'Server'.
The readme is telling you not to install it on a non-SMP Warp SERVER.
I will admit that I am still at 4.02w, because I was not sure from all the
discussions whether it is safe for my system or not.
I believe Willy when he says that it works for him, but I have a different
setup and have heard that it does not work with my dialler (ISDNpm).
One day I will do fresh install and try it out, but 'til then I will stay with
wr8423+wr8424.

Willy,
Since nobody seems to be answering your question, let me tell
you what I did. As you rightly say, the readmes tell you to run
install, but the zip you downloaded does not contain one.
So, you have to do it all by hand.
1. unzip javaswng, ensuring that the directory structure is retained
This will give you a directory Swing-1.1ibm with a tree beneath it
2. As you say there are no instructions, so I guessed and copied the whole
tree to live under c:\Java11\. I could, with hindsight of unzipped it there
in the first place, but I didn't know what it was going to do.
3. As stated in the README, I added the path to swingall.jar to CLASSPATH
ie, ......;c:\JAVA11\Swing-1.1ibm\swingall.jar
4. Set SWING_HOME=c:\java11\swing-1.1ibm.
5. Rebooted and that was that.
6. Tried a few examples just to ensure that they worked.
Again with hindsight, you could probably put the whole tree wherever you
want, just make sure you set SWING_HOME and CLASSPATH accordingly.
HTH,

True, BUT, UN_980 did something to my system that seems to make
NETSCAPE 4.61 downloads FAR more reliable. I don't know what got

This really bugs me - WHY is so much confusion being spread around ?
Here is my understanding. To all intents and purposes, there are
THREE separate TCP/IP implementations available for OS/2 Warp 4 :
- TCP/IP Version 4.0 - this came with Warp 4 client
inetver gives number starting with 4
Applicable Upgrades: WR08423, WR08424, LATEST40
Upgrade UN00980 appears to be a Y2K refresh of some TCP/IP
applications. The documentation indicates it is NOT aimed
at TCP/IP versions above 4.0 !!
- TCP/IP Version 4.1 - this came with the Warp 4 Server package
- this can be purchased from Software Choice
inetver gives number involving 5
Applicable Upgrades: WR08610, UN01001
Upgrade WR08620 will bring 4.1 up to (more or less) 4.2,
with the inetver number being changed to involve 6
- TCP/IP Version 4.2 - a variant of this came with Warp 4.5 (WSeB)
inetver gives number involving 6
There have been some upgrades (e.g. WR08650), but those have
mostly been for specific problems (typically outside the scope
of the majority of the people on this list).

Thanks, Dave. On re-reading you might be right.
I say might, because I had the problem with the "non-" part. I
interpretted it at non-SMP AND non-Server (yes it didn't say that).
That's left over from years ago programming with a language that, as
soon as a NOT got into a logic string, everything after that was NOT-ed.
Come to think of it that would make it non-Warp, too :-)

No. You can simply install it from anywhere that can be accessed with a
drive letter.

No again. Like any FixPak that requires the Fixtool/CSF for installation,
WR08620 can be installed from anywhere, see Fixtool documentation.

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/patches/wr08620t.zip
It fixes the "Denial of Service" attack and some routing problems. (But
INETVER shows version numbers of the 4.2(0) stack, only cosmetic.)

4.21 to be exact.

It requires JRE 1.1.8 as prerequisite and for installation. Extract the
archive into the 1.1.8 installation directory and install from there.

I put WR08610 on top of IC16063 plus latest stack archive without any
problem. Now it runs on top of MPTS 5.3 (TCP/IP 4.1 package). WR08620
broke resolving of hostnames, so I got back to 8610.

There was plenty of time between TCP/IP 4.1/MPTS 5.3/WR08600 and 8610. There
is one (!) fix for it (SLIP.EXE, included in 8620).

IBM already has. Take a look at your TCP/IP 4.21. SYSLEVEL output will
show a CSD level of ... WR08620. Any MPTS can be upgraded to TCP/IP
stack 4.2(0) by applying WR08610 and to 4.21 by WR08620 (which is not for
WSeB and its Client Connect Pak!). You can verify this by running
bldlevel.exe against drivers, executables, DLLs.

Any upgrade so close to Y2K isn't advisable.

UN_0980 updates both TCP/IP 3.1 *and* 4.0 *services*.
It requires a 4.0 *stack* at 4.02e level (MPTS FixPak WR*8421).
So far no collisions.
If you install WR08610 after UN_0980, you'll have to reapply UN_0980.
If you want to install WR08620, you'll have to do it *after* UN_0980,
but it's *not* required to use UN_0980.
IMHO UN_0980 had a longer testing period (it's multilingual as well), so
WR08620 startet later than UN_0980, but was finished and released earlier.
Okay, for everyone who wants to know the collisions, the following files
have newer dates in UN_0980 (in comparison to WR08610):
MIB_2.EXE (newer than WR08620 as well, but much smaller (non-SMP?))
PPP.EXE (WR08620 has more current file)
PPPKILL.EXE (WR08620 has more current file)
PPPTERM.EXE (WR08620 has more current file)
ROUTED.EXE (WR08620 has more current file)
ROUTED.ICO
SLATTACH.EXE
SLCFG.EXE
SLIP.EXE (WR08620 has more current file)
SLIPHOLD.EXE
SLIPKILL.EXE
SLIPMSG.EXE (newer than WR08620 as well, but much smaller (non-SMP?))
SLIPTERM.EXE
SLIPUP.CMD
SLIPWAIT.EXE
TRACERTE.EXE
VDEBUG.EXE
VDOSCTL.EXE
VDOSTCP.VDD (WR08620 has more current file)
SLIPREXX.DLL
The following file is included in UN_0980, but not in WR08610:
NSLOOKUP.EXE (newer than WR08620 as well, but much smaller (non-SMP?))

Once again, blessings upon you, Brad Barclay. And a
"thanks anyway" to Dave Parsons. I did what I
describe below & wrote this offline before I saw your
post.
I opened up 2 OS/2 command windows, did command line
FTP to service.boulder.ibm.com in each one, fired up
a download in each, one for the 3 Java update files,
the other for the 2 Swing files (runtime & toolkit).
How? I typed ahead the GET commands for the files,
then QUIT. Then I went to bed. According to the
messages I found in each window after getting back on
my system today, the downloads had completed
successfully in about 3 & 3.5 hours. The fixes
totalled not quite 13Meg; Swing not quite 18Meg. Got
that? Two simultaneous huge unattended downloads
from the Boulder site completed without error. They
have sure come a long way since Irv & I were talking
about it a few months ago. Who needs a browser,
AWGET, even FTP-PM? <:-))
Now to the process:
1. I installed Java 1.1.8 months ago. But of course
I kept the installation files. I executed
javainuf.exe & javaintk.exe to expand the original
1.1.8 installation package again. Oops. Something
didn't look right. Then I remembered. There's those
silly command line switches for preserving directory
structures. I don't know the switches because I use
ZipControl. Shameless plug:
http://www.rfpsoftware.com. I am not affiliated with
RPF or Frank Fortson in any way. I just love the
product.
2. So I erased all of that & redid it from
ZipControl. Hey. That gives me an idea. For folks
who have been posting about failures to install Java
1.1.8, maybe this is the problem. After you unzip
the installation files, you should have a directory
structure that looks vaguely like this:
Directory of E:\Java118Install
7-31-99 1:18a <DIR> 0 ---- .
7-31-99 1:18a <DIR> 0 ---- ..
7-29-99 6:41a 1,165,812 0 a--- secma.zip
7-29-99 6:41a 20,805,936 276 a--- javainuf.exe
7-29-99 6:39a 15,273,452 276 a--- javaintk.exe
7-29-99 6:38a 11,109,050 276 a--- javainst.exe
7-29-99 6:38a 7,448,000 276 a--- javainsr.exe
7-28-99 10:50a <DIR> 0 ---- sv
7-28-99 10:48a <DIR> 0 ---- it
7-28-99 10:46a <DIR> 0 ---- fr
7-28-99 10:44a <DIR> 0 ---- es
7-28-99 10:42a <DIR> 0 ---- de
7-28-99 10:40a <DIR> 0 ---- br
7-28-99 10:38a <DIR> 0 ---- tw
7-28-99 10:36a <DIR> 0 ---- ko
7-28-99 10:32a <DIR> 0 ---- jp
7-28-99 10:30a <DIR> 0 ---- cn
7-28-99 10:15a <DIR> 0 ---- package
7-28-99 10:15a <DIR> 0 ---- en
Plus lots of files in this directory & all the
subdirectories. And the jp subdirectory should
itself have a subdirectory named td. If you don't
have this structure on your hard drive before you
start the INSTALL.EXE for Java, you will not succeed.
3. I unzipped (using ZipControl) the javainst.exe &
javainsr.exe files into this same directory tree. I
have Java 1.1.8 already installed. But the README
led me to believe that I needed the original install
package again in order to rerun the INSTALL utility
for Swing. So I unzipped the base runtime & toolkit
installation packages again, then unzipped the 2
Swing packages, all 4 into this same directory tree.
5. The cumulative size of the 4 install .EXEs is just
over 52Meg. After expanding them, they took up just
over 216Meg. That's upwards of 268Meg & all I had
done was GOTTEN READY TO START. At this point, my 1G
data/apps E partition suddenly had about 30Meg free.
So I made a quick trip to visit Mr. Partition Magic.
(I booted from my FP12 Utility Diskettes & used PM
3.05.302. I have PM 4 but it doesn't really support
OS/2 any more.) In a couple of days, I will run that
DELINST.CMD that comes with the Java install package.
It erases the install files. Then I could shrink my
partition again, but I don't think I'll bother.
4. Implicit steps, completed months ago, were
installation of Communicator 4.61 & Feature Installer
1.25. If you haven't done those, you need to do
them.
5. In E:\Java118Install I found INSTALL.EXE. Double
clicked it.
6. This brought up Communicator in kiosk mode. Oh.
Somebody posted here months ago that you must have
Communicator configured to come up in the browser,
not the mailer, not the newsreader, not the HTML
composer. The README further states that you must be
sure you do NOT have -nojit specified in the IBM Java
Properties in the OS/2 Preferences. This is, of
course, part of the Preferences dialog of
Communicator. Sorry, this warning is out of
sequence. Go back & fix this if necessary, then try
INSTALL again.
7. After clicking on a couple of things, I arrived at
a page where I was given a choice between Guided &
Advanced Installation. I clicked Advanced.
8. Here I got a page with some check boxes in the
left frame & a report of available disk space by
partition in the right frame. I already have Java
installed so I unchecked the selections in the left
frame for the runtime, toolkit, samples,
documentation, Unicode font, debugger. Am I
forgetting any? The only boxes I did check were for
Swing runtime & Swing toolkit. There is also a box
for the RMI-IIOP thing, but it was grey because I
have not downloaded it.
9. I clicked the button & sat back for about 5
minutes.
10. When it was done, I compared the updated
CONFIG.SYS with my safe copy. Very minor changes.
CLASSPATH grew a new entry for swingall.jar. And a
new SWING_HOME environment variable appeared pointing
to the new Swing subdirectory in the JAVA11 tree.
(Swing in the tree. Nyuk nyuk.)
11. There was also an invocation of the Locked File
Device Driver. But when I looked inside the Locked
File Device Driver script, all I found was:
rm f:\locked
F is my boot partition. There was no directory named
locked on F. Nor on any other partition. So I erased
the script file & removed the statements from
CONFIG.SYS. Every Java install has suffered this
bug. I've reported it here several times. Nobody is
listening.
12. Before shutting down & rebooting, required
because of the changes in CONFIG.SYS, I quickly
applied the Java updates:
12-17-99 8:29a 7,259,280 0 a--- runtime.exe
12-17-99 8:32a 1,765,825 0 a--- samples.exe
12-17-99 8:36a 4,217,582 0 a--- toolkit.exe
13. As far as I can tell, installing Swing did not
install anything on the Desktop or in any Desktop
folder or subfolder. Am I missing something? In any
case, I now have this:
[F:\]java -fullversion
JAVA.EXE full version "JDK 1.1.8 IBM build

This is true. It is also true that this very same
WR08610 can be applied to TCP/IP 4.0 at WR08423.
This skips you from 4.0 to 4.2, bypassing 4.1. How
do I know? Aside from the fact that it says so in
the README, I did it. Since I never installed
WR08424, I can't say from personal experience whether
WR08610 would go on top of that. I assume it would,
but nobody who has actually done so has spoken up
here to say one way or the other.
So you can upgrade from 4.0 to 4.2 by applying
WR08610. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. TCP/IP 4.1 NOT
REQUIRED.
> - TCP/IP Version 4.2 - a variant of this came with
Warp 4.5 (WSeB)

WR08620 states in the README that it is a Fix Pack
for WR08610. So if you have installed WR08610, you
are supposed to be able to install WR08620. I did.
But since WR08610 applies to various other platforms
-- Server & WSeB among them, I think -- then WR08620
also applies to them. And some of them start out at
TCP/IP 4.1. Also, some platforms came with WR08610
already applied. Says so in the README for WR08620.
I focus only on the platform I have: WARP 4
uniprocessor non-server Client. I'm running WR08620.
I'm at TCP/IP 4.2. I never had TCP/IP 4.1.
It always seemed devoid of confusion to me.

Win95 without a fatal error - I only get those when I

but locks the screeen totally on reboot somehow) and /or the

that then cycles). And then gratuiuosly F***ed the Master

I suppose I should at the positive sided of it - it made the

If you have the ASUS K7M motherboard, you should install the KM1007 BIOS
if it is not already installed. The BIOS and the flash program are
available at ASUSs FTP site at:
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/slota/
Otherwise, the ASUS motherboard should find all of your memory properly
in both Windows and OS/2. If it does not, your memory may be faulty.
It must be PC100 or PC133 grade memory meeting the specifications in the
ASUS motherboard manual. You might want to look at that to be sure.
I have been using OS/2 v4 with an overclocked Athlon and ASUS K7M for
over a month with zero problems. It is easily the best hardware I have
ever had for OS/2.

A blessing upon you!!! You have saved me the trouble
of downloading the thing & doing this analysis
myself. You are a GOOD MAN!!!
The files I didn't snip are the only ones that might
be interesting to me. But since I'm not experiencing
problems with these programs, I don't feel cheated by
not applying this update.
Also, from what others had posted, I had expected to
see FTP.EXE or TELNET.EXE in there. I guess not. Oh

Yeah. INETWAIT is called from MPTSTART.CMD. I
remember some posts from people saying they pulled
that out & it sped up bootup. I remember posting
that there was an APAR about race conditions &
speculating that INETWAIT was the implementation of
the APAR. So I recommended against that particular
dodge. And timing during bootup is a problem, not
just with the networking stuff, but overall.

I also downloaded and manually installed the ZIP file (see my reply to Willy)
and it all seems to work, but I notice from Willy's last post that he has two
SYSLEVEL files which I have not. Should they be in the ZIP file also?
Are there any other differences between the two approaches?
Apart from the SYSLEVEL files, is there anything to be gained by
downloading the other two files and installing these on top of
the ZIP installation which I already have?
One further point, do you know whether there are any updates yet for
Swing and if/when there are, who would be responsible for them?
Hursley?

You're not running the Asus Athlon MoBo are you ?
It seems all other Athlon MoBo's are ACPI 1 compliant,
rather than ACPI 2.
That means only Win95/98 and NT4.0 can find more than 64MB.
Daniela has written a patch for this:
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/patches/patchldr.zip
Which replaces the OS2LDR, so it behaves like a windos LDR
and even non-windos users have the pleasure of using more
than 64MB.
The OS/2 setting in your BIOS is a fossil back from the OS/2
2.0 era.

The MPTS refresh WR8610 can be used on the Warp 4
TCP/IP 4.0. You can also use the update WR8620.
MPTS is the network protocols and NIC drivers, and
includes the TCP/IP stack.
The TCP/IP 4.0 that ships with Warp 4 includes the
TCP/IP applications, FTP, TELNET, FTPPM, etc.
These applications will work with the WR8610/8620
MPTS. The only thing to watch for (from reading other
posts) is that the latest TCP/IP update has a conflict
with the WR8620 stack update.
Apply WR8610 first, then the TCP/IP update UN_980
then the WR8620 update.
WR8610 is a "refresh" and uses MPTS to do the install
WR8620 is a "fixpack" and uses the CSF 1.41 fixpack
tool to do the update.
Maybe this will help??

Is this BIOS version a back-level version or an updated version? In other
words is it a fix put out by ASUS or was it made at a time before it was
broken? I'm curious because I'm thinking about performing a similar upgrade
and I want to know if such a thing will be available when I'm ready to upgrade

Maybe so. If MPTS is LAN stuff I won't bother, at least for now. I'm at
4.02t from the MPTN and TCP/IP update. I'm one of those dummies who could
never get networking to install and run (although rather large junks of it
are around anyway). Too many things involved that I could never find

From: pieter@world.std.com (Pieter Bras)
I ran into a problem that I believe was caused by CHKDSK.LOG file this
past week:
Once a year or so my server machine gets taken apart, cleaned, tested, etc.
I booted from floppies and ran the CHKDSK32 from Warp 3 FP 40.
After I put the system back together and typed "net start server" the
requester wouldn't start. An error message stated that "the program failed
to respond to a signal and was killed ..."
I replaced the NIC (3c905), tested the hub, etc. Nothing wrong with the
hardware. After hours of desperate searching for the cause, I tried
deleting the CHKDSK.LOG files. What do you know, the requester started
right up.
Does anyone know what is the mechanism by which CHKDSK.LOG creates
problems? Is it a bug in HPFS itself, or does CHKDSK corrupt the file
system structure in some fashion? In the latter case, would merely
deleting CHKDSK.LOG still leave the file system in a damaged (but no
longer visibly damaged) state?
Also I saw some comments here that the "WP ROOT. SF" caused problems.
I don't think I've ever experienced that. Still, what is the purpose of
this file, and is it OK to delete it?

The whole MPTS and TCP/IP stuff lies unpacked on an extra partition anyway.

BTW, the DOSBOX/WINSOCK fix includes an additional newer VDOSTCP.*SYS*,
that is not included in any other archive or FixPak. <g>

ftp and telnet are services, which are *not* part of MPTS.
Imagine IBM would ship 30+ MB all-in-one Service Pack executables,
like M$ does for their Never Trustworthy product. Man, that would be
boring! Not worth the effort for a 100+ pages website ... 8*)

WR08424 and LATEST40 update to 4.02w *both*. 8424 requires at least 8421,
while LATEST40 can be installed on top of 8415 (?) or IC16063.

It updates the TCP/IP 3.1 *and* 4.0 services.

No. Warp Server 4 came with TCP/IP 3.1, SMP with 3.5.

It's the first 32-bit stack and now INETVER is split into three version
numbers for 3 core protocol drivers. The version number reflects the
version of MPTS 5.30xx
> Applicable Upgrades: WR08610, UN01001
WR08610 is MPTS 5.4 including stack 4.2. Now the version number
reflects the MPTS CSD level (8)6.10xx.

MPTS 5.5 including 4.21 stack, same CSD level as WSeB.

Again the MPTS CSD level (8)6.20xx.

Complete TCP/IP 4.21 package including full MPTS 5.5. The package is
available for the clients as well (Client Connect Pak, which has an
extra CD, IIRC). 6.20xx version numbers as well.

I guess that's FTPAPI.DLL. (FTP has separate fix archives as well), but
the ftp files in UN_0980 are more current.

You obviously have hardware problems. When no system will install then
you have to look over the hardware and try to determine what is causing it
by elimination. You could start with memory and do a vga install with the
least you can manage. Who is your mb manufacturer???

Subj: Internal processing error after installing DDPak fix
From: Ron Vopicka <cvopicka@erols.com>
Got the following wonderful message:
Internal processing error
location ##1000:2fc3 - 0002:2fc3
6000, 2008
0586058c
Internal revision 9.029 97/10/01
I'm trying to bring up a new system with warp 4.0. I started with a
working system disk Warp 4.0 with no fix packs. Since I had already
successfully installed the dd fixpack on my production system
successfully... what could go wrong!
During installation I got all of the same messages about newer versions
present and locked files... answered them all the same. Closed done the
system in a neat controlled fashion, rebooted
And what to my wondering eyes should appear but... (see above)
I don't think contacting my "ibm representative" will do any good.
Any clues? I did the alt-f2 trick and found the modules scroll by
faster than I can read them. Do know I get thru ibm1s506 (that's slow),
then about a half a page of modules scroll down about in the blink of an
eye, and it is exception time! I think there is a way to single step
the boot, but I can't remember it, HELP!

Subj: Netscape in Win-OS/2 not working
From: tvoltagg@home.com
I have been getting help from a number of folks and appreciate everything.
The problem is that I STILL can't get Netscape in Win-OS/2 to work. Here
are the facts: I have seen the Winsock help files and am doing EVERYTHING
right. I am loading vdostcp.sys in the dos_device box, I am setting etc in
the
autoexec.bat and am pointing to the etc directory where I have the resolv file
kept. I have the correct winsock in the tcpip\bin directory, etc etc etc.
Yet it still doesn't work. I know that it is not Netscape, because NO 16-bit
tcp/ip application wotks either (aim, real audio, etc).
I'm using Warp 4.0 with FP12 and TCP/IP 4.1. This machine is behind a NAT
firewall on a peer to peer system. I had it working for months, but messed it
up while I was trying to tweak it. Now it is not coming up at all.
I can connect fine is OS/2 (Netscape 4.61 for OS/2). It is only the 16 bit
Netscape (4.04 and 4.08) and also Internet Explorer that doesn't connect. I
need
it for Quicken. Can anyone give me any help beyond pointing to the
traditional
help files which explain those things I've aleady done?
Any Help would be greatly appreciated....Thanks.

Later breaking news. My son, whose eyes are faster than mine (or is it
his brain), has determined we have entered the locked file processing.
When I did it on the working machine, all the files were successfully
unlocked.
On this machine we don't even start to put up a user friendly message
(just the unfriendly one).
I must reiterate, HELP!

I can't document where I saw it, and I have a poor memory.
But, I'm certain I have read that there are licensing
problems with the Windows Look and Feel. I.e., while the
Windows Look and Feel are technologically available, they
are not always legally available.

You must have missed part of this thread, Jim. As
I've said a number of times on this thread, I have
WARP 4 non-server uniprocessor client. I installed
the full TCP/IP (also File & Print Sharing) that
comes on the CD released in General Availability in
the fall of 1996. In the intervening years, I
applied MPTS Refreshes up to & including WR08423, as
well as the "stack updates" that came out during that
time. Then I applied MPTS Refresh WR08610. Then I
applied Fix Pack WR08620. No stack updates since
WR08423. I now have TCP/IP 4.2 as a result of
applying this maintenance. I never installed TCP/IP
4.1.
What's confusing about this?

After applying 8610+8620 over usual Warp 4.0 client
you will have only 4.2 stack - not whole 4.2 package.

The KM1007 BIOS is an upgrade to the BIOS that originally shipped with
Rev 1.04 of the K7M motherboard. The current shipping versions probably
already have this version of the BIOS but versions shipped 3 or 4 weeks
ago may not. ASUS has also released a beta BIOS which is also at the
link above under 'BETA.' ASUS typically does not pull a BIOS unless it
is defective. The flash utility (also at the above link) provides a
means to save your current BIOS before upgrading which is something I
would strongly recommend doing. So you can reflash the old BIOS if a
newer BIOS causes problems. Generally ASUS BIOS upgrades are pretty
good and you should not expect problems.

I cheated: I got hold of TCP/IP 41 and scrapped the 8610 version. The
remote admin functions (curtesy of the Java management interface),
multiple TELNET accounts, and improved logon security sold me. I was
just passing on notes from that little exercise. I'm still a little
fuzzy about fixes for 4.1 but that will come. WSeB goes on shortly so
I figure I can struggle along <g>.

I saw this and though I couldn't help with the problem I wanted to

then I realized I'm even farther to the right than that.
"If it ain't broke, don't even breath" is probably more like it.
(Or, "if it ain't broke, wait fifteen minutes." Or, "if it ain't

On the other hand, I'm sure I've brought every single problem I've

WR08610 is a stack update. Initially is was meant to be for those on
TCPV4 (WR08423 by that time presumably).
Sicne then, someone has updated the 8620 fix to state that you should
really install the full tcpip V4.1 product (from software choice
presumably) as there have been problems it seems in a migration from
the V4 16 bit product to the V4.1/4.2 32 bit one.
>What's confusing about this?
Heaps...which is also why IBM suggests (now) that you actually install
the full product rather than try to upgrade the older V4 one I
suspect. There are now so many patches, hot fixes, refreshes and
fixpacks for the mptn/tcpip products in general that I doubt anyone
has actually been able to sort it all out and come up with a
completely up to date stack.
Apparently, the whole mess has been basically cleaned up by way of
providing a new 32 bit stack and apps (V4.1) now updated, but still
relatively clean to V4.2
Only trouble is, it costs, and takes some time to install and
configure. One more good reason for IBM to release a Warp V4.5 IMHO.
Clean, y2k out of the box, all apps pretty up to date.
Cheers,
Craig

Yes, it can. I did it, but the stack has problems and netstat -s

Interestingly, as the IBM docos suggest, when I put the full V4.1

But it has problems. It basically works, but for mine I like a
-really- stable system.
All our production WS4 servers have been going out with fixes
8423+8424 until IBM clears up the mess or we decide to start shipping
WSeB (which will no doubt start happening shortly after fixpack one
comes out next year)

Hi all,
This is very interesting. I have one system, which consistently exhibits the
problem - T'pad 760XD,
IDE 3.2 Gb HDD. Home system, PC365, PPro 200, Adaptec 2940UW has never shown
this problem.
T'pad is at FP12, PC365 at FP9, both on same level od OD 2+fixkit 2
I have also reported this to IBM and have not had any response to date.
Cheers,

I was under the impression that you had to install a fixpack before
using the DD fixpack. Is that not true? You do seem like you're
getting pretty far into the boot process. You may want to try to boot
back to VGA, apply a regular fixpack and try the DDfixpack again.

From: "Mike Slater" <mas@halo-int.co.uk>
Ivr,
Yes after running Y2kclock.exe those are the files which are installed and
yes they are the flawed ones. (on certain machines).
Ok having emailed IBM and after reading further I know the full picture.
It looks like one of the reasons PJ25912.ZIP was released
to resolve problems introduced by the Y2KCLOCK.EXE (clocksys
replacement) contained in PJ25309.ZIP. The following is from the
clock01.txt contained in PJ25912.ZIP.
------------
Symptoms include the minute jumping 2 minutes for every minute that
elapsed or
jumping from the 29th of the month to the 1st of the next month at
midnight
(i.e. 10/29 jumps to 11/01).
-----------
What my colleagues did was to visit the IBM website and download this flawed
PJ25309.zip (y2kclock.exe) . As the above describes the fault this can
possibly introduce (and my colleagues experienced), why don't IBM remove it
from the website or make the situation clear. Its surely quite possible that
many people will visit this site for a "last minute check during December"
and subsequently have a disaster on the 29th of the month, obviously if they
had done this earlier in the year they would have experienced a problem on a
previous "29th of the Month".
I realise the above is a known problem but I think the IBM website does not
make it clear, of course if you have latest fix pack the above is not
relevent anyway.

From: Ron Vopicka <cvopicka@erols.com>
Thanks Charles.
I have solved my own problem. It seems the config.sys (my son's)
doesn't like the new version of pclogic.sys. I regressed to the old
version and the problem went away.
To those that might be interested in how I arrived at this conclusion,
lest they think it was a flash of insight or a booming voice from above
saying "REPLACE PCLOGIC.SYS" here was the procedure.
1. Read the readme's, found that where the deferred maintenance
drivers/programs were kept. Looked in there and found to my wonderment
that the directory and all of its .dll etc subdirectories were quite
empty.
2. Out of insight (yes, really) I decided to run another chkdsk and
found that there was one lost cluster on C: some of which said,
"OS/2 Corrective Service XR_D001 12/19/99
Move E:\ibmcsflk\fix\os2\dll\pnp.dl_ c:\os2\dll\pnp.dll
REMTREE E:\ibmcsflk......"
3. Hmmmm! The tree is still there and the directories are empty!
4. Think WAY back to when I had to insert a gazillion pause.sys
statements in my config.sys when trying to find a somewhat similar
problem YEARS ago.
5. Found pause.sys, copied it over (under DOS, fortunately its not an
HPFS system so I didn't need to go thru the agony of 3 diskettes to come
to life each time.
6. Added a binary search sprinkling of pause.sys /w:15 (wait 15
seconds) into the config.sys.... and of course didn't hit the first or
second times, but got VERY much closer to the failure (prior to the
cackling black screen about witches, goblins, and my IBM
representative).
7. Now that I was in the area, I put one pause per device line and gave
it a third shot.
8. BANG. pclogic.sys
9. Found a replacement module, (didn't use the archived one, I suspect
it is compressed or something).
10 Rebooted... success.
11. Post mortem: compared the replaced pclogic with the one installed on
my other system (after successfully applying the DDPak). They are
IDENTICAL, so the compatibility problem is elsewhere in my son's
config.sys.
As to the comment about applying the fix packs before the ddpak, I
thought, since I am going to FP12, that I would have to install the
ddpak first, still suspect that is OK, but if some thinks otherwise, I'm
willing to listen and learn.
TO ANYONE FROM IBM THAT CAN SPELL OS/2 WHO MAY BE LISTENING (LURKING)
I find very little good to say about MS Windoze BUT their BOOTLOG.TXT
file is well worth emulating, even if I had to manually invoke it in the
config.sys directly as opposed to from a menu.
One look at the log would have told me EXACTLY which module croaked.
In other cases (not this one) it is great for getting elapsed times for
module executions (to explain/quantify pregnant pauses).
Of course, someone will write in and tell me "it already exists, dummy!"
At any rate, bootlogs are a very worthwhile device, even moreso when you
don't have one.
Hope my experience helps someone. It's been sometime since I've gotten
in up to my neck on something like this. Thank &diety. :-)

Not really. The SYSLEVEL files aren't necesary for any actual Java
functionality - they tend to be included only to provide system
management tools for large corporate users, where you can scan for and
parse all SYSLEVEL files found to determine exactly what is installed on
a given system, at what revision level.
If you're not managing dozens of OS/2 based systems, you probably don't
need to care about this.
I don't actually know if these files are included in the ZIP or not -
the best way to find out is to scan the ZIP file for SYSLEVEL.*.
However, I imagine that if you can't find them on your system, they
weren't in the archive. I probably wouldn't worry about it.

> the ZIP installation which I already have?
Probably not. If Swing works on your system, then there isn't anything
more that you could achieve with the other distribution. The functional
files are the same in both - it's just installation and management which
differs.

Swing is controlled by Sun - IBM merely provides a supported version of
it for OS/2. When Sun updates Swing, IBM will probably follow suit. I
would imagine that Hursley would be responsible for such updates,
however they are probably constrained a bit by Sun's fix schedule.

Been riding on Fpk-12 for a few weeks now. Suddenly,
couple of days ago, the following quit working in
OS/2 windows:
c:\> echo "hello world" > lpt1
Weird thing is this: it works in a shell PRIOR to WPS
getting launched. It does NOT work AFTER the WPS
is running, whether I issue the command in a VIO, or
in a FullScreen session. Consequently, my VIO mode
editor is not printing.
Good boy that I am, I have a maintenance partition
with a known-to-be-good installation of Warp-4 fpk-12
also. All's well there. The following are the same
in both sides of the fence:
PRINT01.SYS
PRINT02.SYS
PARALLEL.SNP (the Plug'n Pray snooper)
"Full Hardware Detection" has been enabled all along
in the Hardware Manager object.
Spooler object seems ok.
Any suggestions?

That is cured in WR08620. Somewhere on this thread is a post
from me showing the output of a NETSTAT -S command from WR08620.
You are right when you say NETSTAT crashed the whole system
hard, Black Screen of Death, requiring power off or hardware
reset under WR08610. However, the rest of WR08610 worked fine
for me until WR08620 came out, which then cured NETSTAT.

That is not what it says in the README. It says that if you are
on non-SMP Warp Server, then that is true. That warning does
not apply to other platforms. Read it again.

Good question - the only place for an unlimited license that I know of
is SW Choice. You get the next step (4.2) with Warp Server for
eBusiness. I got mine thru a DEVCON subscription but I haven't checked
the license closely on that one since I keep a subscription in place.
I'd be interested in that answer myself since at least one client
would be a good target for the newer stack. One thing that really
improves is heavily loaded servers running DB2.

Which of the many variants of Devcon do you need?

Hello all,
Attached below is the response I received on this problem. Seems as though
the quality of the
response depends on the technician.
I am still no further ahead, though I too think it may be a media problem.
Technicians response:
*************************************************************
I am unable to recreate the problem which you have documented. I would
suggest that you attempt to download the tool listed below and open the
file. You may also want to delete the log files you have and have the
system recreate it. Furthermore, it is possible that you have a
harddrive media issue and this file is sitting on a bad sector.
Renaming the current file and letting the system make it again later
someplace else may clear this up. Thanks.
.
5.10.2 CHKDSK LOG FORMATTER
.
CHKDSK creates a binary service log file (chkdsk.log) on the root of
the drive being checked during autocheck or whenever the /F option is
invoked. The previous log file is saved as chkdsk.old. A formatter for
this log file can be found at:
.
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes/chklogpk.exe
.
.
This is a self extracting ZIP file. Place it in a directory in your
path and enter CHKLOGPK. This will create the following files:
.
message.txt
msghdr.txt
pmchklog.exe
range.txt
readme
.
.
They should all have a date of 05/14/97 or later (May 14, 1997).
This is a tool used by OS/2 service to format and view the new CHKDSK
log entries. There is no support for this tool. You are welcome to
use it but if you have problems with it or do not understand the output
DO NOT contact IBM for assistance as none will be provided.
Cheers,
Tom Pauncz

Well, I started the thread, listened, participated and was convinced I
could, indeed, install 8610 and 8620 on my warp 4 non-SMP non_server
system.
Fortunately, I had a "non-production" system to install on. I installed
8423, 8424, dosbox, latest40, un_0980, ip8412, DHCP... and it ran
smashingly (that is, really well.
So after listening to Wild Willie and others I decided my concern about
installing 8610 and 8620 was just an overblown part of my gloomy
personality.
So I installed 8610... and CRRRRASH. I finally isolated the trap e to
cntrl.exe. Figured maybe I could regress to the last working one... on
examination I noted a HUGE change in size, like 11k vs 55k and thought
to myself, this is not going to work.
It didn't.
I finally went back to installing 8423, got that condensending voice
saying, "You are installing a version OLDER than the one currently
installed, do you REALLY want to do this?" Well, I said yes and told
him to button it.
I shall stay at the 8424 level until I have the aura of gloom lifted
from me.

IIRC, that version (10.005, type bldlevel \os2\boot\clock01.sys at
command prompt) includes a specific fix for Warp Server SMP, which causes
the problem on non-SMP machines. Use the older driver that has the Y2K
fix (10.001) or a more current one from a base operating system FixPak or
from the Device Driver FixPak (10.032).

8610 is what upgrades you to the 32bit stack & many have had
problems as you describe.
I was lucky, & able to successfully apply 8610 & 8620 to my
WARP 4 client, the 32bit stack DOES make a difference if you
are running highspeed access.

Now it seems they have tried to reproduce it! Maybe we're getting
somewhere...
During the time I was tearing my hair out over this, I had a totally
different computer than I do now. One of the many things I did to try to
isolate the problem was low-level format my SCSI drive (to mark bad blocks),
partition and format HPFS, load Warp (no Networking, no BonusPak), then load
FP9. Turn off the computer to force a check on reboot, then open the root
directory in the drives object . After about 30 seconds everything starts to
go slow and after about 2 min. totally hung. CAD. The next boot would often
remove the CHKDSK.LOG as corrupted (and replace it with a brand new one).
Remove CHKDSK.LOG after booting (from the command line) and this doesn't
happen. 100%
Partly as a result of this problem, I decided to get a new computer. Same
deal when I installed on the new one (all new hard drives). I've seen this
problem on two other computers as well.
Is CHKDSK.LOG being written to the exact same very particular spot on the
hard drive each time? Maybe something stomps on it after being written during
the boot process and damages it? It is hard for me to believe 4 different
computers all have a defect on their hard drive just where CHKDSK.LOG (and
FOUNDx directories) is being written - but stranger things have happened...

The WSeB CD's are in the ADVANCED section. I can't quote the prices (
Hell, I can't even figure them OUT!) but I think there are 2 ways of
going. One is the more expensive version where you get the full CDROM
set shipped 3-4 times a year. The cheaper way, as I recall, gets you
membership privileges that allow tou to download anything via the web.
Somewhere I recall seeing where there were programs available for
something like $300 a year for web access but so many of the things
I'm interested in have gotten too big even with a T1 available. WSeB
is, what, 5 CDROMs? I do know that the Premier level membership gets
you a set of 103 CDROMs as of the last (Dec 99) shipment of Release 2
but a lot of that is DB2 and other platform stuff (AIX, NT, 390, etc).
Somewhere on the web page I think they quote prices but a call to the
1-800 number will get a quick answer. The sales group there is really
helpful but don't be too surprised when they answer with a bit of an
accent. About a year ago IBM moved the whole Devcon operation to
Denmark from Boulder.

Warp3 for windows: the LAST (and final, apparently) is Fix Pack 40.
(there is a way to continue using warp server fix packs, but I don't
think I would recommend that).
Warp4: the Latest is Fix Pack 12 (it is rumoured that FP13 may show
up, early in the new year).
You can get these at:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes
and follow the appropriate links. You will also want the Device Driver
fix pack (same set of links).
I also suggest that you check out:
http://duanec.indelible-blue.com/fixes/LatestWarp4.html
for these, and other things that you may want to fix.
Be sure to READ the README files, carefully.
Hope this helps...

If you read the docs, that come with UN_980, it specifically says that
8610, and 8620, are for TCPIP version 4.1, OR for SMP server. It does
say that you should NOT use them on other systems.

Sorry, I am a bit late in this response to your post(s).
You probably have accumulated enough info but if not
there was a recent thread on this subject area quite
recently. I do not have have the full amount of posts

Subject: Workplace shell bugs
Date: Tue, 19 Oct 1999 17:58:32 +0200 (CET)
I found some bugs not fixed in fixpack 12. Can anybody confirm
these?
1. Draging and dropping of a file attachment from PMmail 2.1
to a
folder will halt the WPS (not responding and no reset
possible) if
the name of the file has spaces in it.
Dropping files to the WPS itself will most often kill
the WPS even
with short, 8.3 names. Maybe size is important here.
2. Draging and dropping an *.exe or *.cmd file will
always create
a shadow even if the wps setting reads move. This will
not happen
if other files too are dropped. This bug was introduced
in warp 4
and is very annoying.
3. Playing sound with mwave drivers with for instance
the
entertainment pack for os/2, warpamp and a bunch other
software
will generate a 100% cpu utilization one or two seconds
after the
program is closed. Starting a second program with sound
enabled
will hang the WPS.

I can't make that happen on my system. Well, dragging a file
object
that's .exe or .cmd to some WPS folder creates a program object,
but
that's as it should be in my opinion.

Item 2 isn't a bug, it's a very poorly implemented feature. D&D
for
exe's and cmd's should produce a *program object*, not a shadow.
Look
at the resulting object's notebook: there should not be a
'File' tab.
IMHO, this was a very good idea, but it should only have been
applied
to exe's dropped on the Desktop or one of its subfolders. Then
too,
this feature should have dropped the ".exe" or ".cmd" from the
object's
title to make the transformation somewhat more obvious. (I
tried to do
this in DTProgram but failed. It appears that the title is set
by the
original program-file object rather than the resulting program
object).

You are right even on fixpack 12. I would add *.com file. They
have the
behaviour as *.exe files. *.bat behaves like *.cmd files.

To follow up my own posting:
I found some bugs not fixed in fixpack 12. Can anybody confirm
these?
Draging and dropping of a file attachment from pmmail 2.1 to a
folder which
is opened AS A SHADOW will halt the WPS (not responding and no
reset
possible). The length of the filename has no influence. (Maybe
this is a
error in my *.ini files, but I think it is a real bug.)
*.exe, *.cmd, *.com and *.bat file which are dragged to the
workplace do
create an program object even if the desktop setting is move. In
a mixed drag
and drop operation they are moved correctly.
No extra information on bug tree.
Playing sound with mwave drivers with for instance the
entertainment pack
for os/2, warpamp and a bunch other software will generate a
100% cpu
utilization one or two seconds after the program is closed.
Starting a second
program with sound enabled will hang the WPS.
Any word on mwave drivers that correct this serious problem?

Yeah, tell me indeed. That is surprising. Not only
does that contradict what it says in the README for
WR08610, which was released on October 20, 1998 --
more than a YEAR before UN_0980 -- but it contradicts
the reality of my 2 systems, which have been running
on WR08610 since a couple of days after WR08610
became available. My office system runs on DHCP, by
the way, for the person who said he had DHCP trouble
with it. Perhaps there is a configuration issue, if
you care to pursue it. My suspicion is there might
be something weird in either %ETC%\DHCPCD.CFG or
MPTN\BIN\SETUP.CMD. If you post what WR08610 left on
your system in those 2 files, we might be able to get
you running. Also, you must read the README.MPT
inside the first diskette image. The whole thing.
Carefully. There's some device drivers that reside
in different directories as a result of applying this
MPTS Refresh. Device drivers. As in CONFIG.SYS
changes.
And to Dave Tholen, it is my understanding that the
following sets of maintenance are meant to update
non-overlapping sets of files:
1. XR_Mxxx system Fix Packs
2. WRxxxx MPTS & TCP/IP stack updates
3. IPxxxx Peer (File & Print Sharing) updates
4. XR_Dxxx Device Driver Fix Packs (mostly, but what
collisions there are, are meant to be benign)
Best I can tell, they indeed don't overlap.
Now if they could just get system Fix Packs & Java to
be separate............

So am I :-) (only without un0980)
All works fine (excluding sendmail)

Thanks for the info. I'm not in the States so I can't use the 1-800 number
but I'll try the Devcon site again and see if I can get a local number.
I wish you could order it on-line, it would make life a lot easier.
Talking long distance to sales people who put you on hold etc, is at the
very least expensive and frequently not very helpful either.

How did you get the hockey broadcast? Didn't they upgrade to the G2 codec
which doesn't work with OS/2? (As far as I know.)

Eric,
It would be helpful to me if you could tell me exactly what order you
applied the fixes in.
My system started on FP12 with DD FP installed
8423 > 8424 > DOSBOX > LATEST40 > UN_0980
Boots after each install, final install of 8610 trap "e" in cntrl (or
shortly afterward.
I appreciate WW comment that it could be a configuration file, but I'm
afraid the evidence he wants is long gone... and I'm not too anxious to
recreate the data :-)

Yes, IBM keeps them separate. Base fixpaks only update the Base OS.
Beginning with, I think it was FP11 for Warp 4, IBM has kept the
Device DRiver fixes separate, also ... hence the new XR_Dxxx fixpaks
for Device Drivers.

I applied 8610 many moons ago (1 month after availibility) &
8620 as soon as it was available as it stabilized 8610 very
well.
I have NOT applied the new UN as the apar fix list doesn't
apply to me. (The Y2k fixes have been available as single
fixes forever.)
As far as the state of my 16bit stack & MPTS when i
converted to 32 bit (i.e. applied 8610) i was up to date for
that time.
I do remember that the 8610 READMEs were quite involved.
Have you read them totally through at least twice???
Hope this helps,
HAPPY Y2K!!

do a dejanews search
these issues were covered around the time 8610 & 8620 came
out. a lot of it is minor tcp/ip configuration notebook
changes.
ALSO 8620 does indeed stabilize 8610 & may in fact easily
solve your problems.
Good luck!
HAPPY Y2k!!
