Subj: Re: NIC for os/2?
From: Jon Cleveland <jcleveland@carolina.rr.com>
Just wanted to say, I did get my cable modem working. The card,
3com509b-tp, is fine.
Apparently I had a bad file somewhere even after the upgrades to MPTS and
TCP/IP.
I did a complete re-install and its working fine.
Thanks

Subj: PPP and server assigned DNS server
From: Steve Dunning <sdunnin@iw.edwpub.com>
My ISP recently started using dynamic server assigned DNS server
addresses. I believe their PPP server performs that task along with the
dynamic IP address assignment, which os/2's PPP handles just fine.
Does anyone know how to make the dynamic dns server address assignment
work with DOIP and PPP?
Thanks,
Steve

These IPCP options (like dynamically assigned IP addresses) just rejected by
PPP.
PPP is outdated and there is no way to make it work. Take a look at SafeFire
PPP
(http://www.lgs.kiev.ua/) and you'll find a solution for that problem.

The latest version of InJoy supports server-assigned DNS addresses.
Another trick is to login using Windoze9x and run 'winipcfg' It will
give you the addresses of the DNS and you can enter them manually into
DOIP

From: kenames@earthlink.net
I have java 1.18 and nescape 4.04 installed on warp 4 with fixpak11.
My problem is when loading any page with java, the status line at
bottom of ns says "starting Java" for about 3 seconds and then
netscape just closes. Has this happened to anyone else and is there a
solution? Thanks.

Subj: net files -> files don't get closed at once
From: t_am@gmx.de (Timo Maier)
Hi!
When I open files from a NT4 (SP5) client on my Warp 4 server, and close them
on client side, the files still are opened up to about 40 seconds on the Warp
server. I can see this using "net files".
Doing the same on a Warp 4 client (DOS mode), the file are closed right after
the client closes the files.
It doesn't matter if I use the IBM primary logon client, or the NT client. I
tested NetBios and NetBios over tcp/ip, same result.
Is that a known problem or what could be wrong?

Install an ethernet Card on the Warp Machine. Install another ethernet
on the Linux machine. Make sure they both use the same type of cable.
Connect the machines using 10 baseT,thin ethernet, whatever. Run
continuity test on the wire. Install a hub, if necessary. Design
IP with appropriate adresses, subnets et al.
Run Peerinst (or install Samba). Make sure you have the correct
driver for the card and there are no hardware conflicts. Configure
TCP/IP. Ping yourself on the Warp machine. Ping your Linux machine.
Use netstat on the Warp machine for troublershooting.

From: "Terry Haimann" <thaimann@dmreg.infi.net>
I went back to John Summerfield's Web page "setting up a home lan" and
basically created a table to catorgize each setting. With this informattion
I made another attempt to set up the network. Well I think I was
succsessful, I can ping each machine from the other. What I can't do is
telnet from my os2 box to my linux box. I beleive the problem is that Linux
is using some sort of secure telnet deamon and os2 has just a standard telnet
client. I tryed d/l ssh for os2, but still can't connect to the linux
machine. If I can figure out how to setup Linux to use the standard telnet
deamon and then set the allow file to local connections only, that is what I
will probably do.
I still need information as how to set up infi.net on Linux, this would allow
both my Wife and I to internet at the same time.
Thx Terry

Subj: Losing network path?
From: Jon Cleveland <jcleve@attglobal.net>
Hi. I don't know much about networking at all, but here is my problem.
I have a cable modem and it works great after boot up, but after I've
been on for about an hour or so, my browser and my e-mail program seem
to lose the path. No matter what url I try to connect to Netscape gives
an error message saying can't find the page. So I try my e-mail program,
it reports the server is unreachable. The DHCP monitor says I still have
a valid
lease. If I reboot all is well again. Any suggestions?

Hello all. I am a registered user of Injoy Firewall 1.2. I have
effectively used the product to put 5 computers on the net by way of
NAT and the computers
used private address space. 192.168.100.0 example. I followed the
instructions and it put my computers on the net not a problem.
But I was not able to get Injoy Firewall 1.2 to portmap the outside
world to my www server on port 80. I have not been able to get it to
portmap anything at all. Nothing. May I ask did anyone have any such
luck. If so please tell how you did it. I have contacted the author of
the program and seems he has little patience to those of lesser
knowledge and was kinda rude. I guess we all have a bad day. Heck I
am not a firewall engineer or a programmer. But would like my server
to be on the net too. Safely of course.
I think injoy firewall is a very good product. I have not had any
problems with it. Just the portmapping. It has not crashed on me or
been inconsistent or anything. But really wish I could get the
portmapping on it working. When my firewall is running it does not
give an firewall.err or anything. The filters load and work. And when
I dump the filters in use. It shows them which are enabled. I haven't
a clue why it will not portmap anything in.
To test this my current configuration. I used another product to
portmap stuff in.
I used Internet Igate. igos2146.zip. It mapped my ports in the first
time out. I was able to map the outside world to a private address
space 192.168.100.1 example and it worked.
I do not wish to use the Internet Igate product. I do not have
anything agaist it or anything. I just like the Injoy firewall the
best and paid for it and would like to use to the fullest if possible.
I noticed that there is a mailing list for Injoy and Injoy Connect but
not the Injoy firewall. If there was such an area I would have posted
my response there.
Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks

Here are a couple of ideas...
First, make sure, in your BIOS settings, that any setting like 'PNP
Operating System' or anything like that is turned OFF. Then boot OS/2, and
when the OS/2 blurb (in the upper left corner) appears, hit <Alt-F1>. A menu
comes up, hit <F5> - enable hardware detect. See if OS/2 boots then.
If not, you probably have a hardware conflict, or driver problem. Reboot
OS/2, when the blurb appears hit <Alt-F2>. This will list each driver as it
is loaded. When it hangs, look at the last driver loaded. This may give you a
clue...

Subscribe to the InJoy list. The firewall rules are the same for
the two products. There is a lot oif help available from the list.

Subj: Realtek 8019 PnP Driver for OS/2
From: Alex Thurgood <alexthurgood@compuserve.com>
Hi All,
I'm a newbie to OS/2 networking and am having difficulties getting my
OS/2 WSEB to recognize my Realtek 8019 PnP card without bombing. I
installed the drivers from the diskette like it said in the
accompanying instructions, i.e. Using MPTS and LAPS, and it says the
card is correctly configured with the required protocols (TCP/IP and
Netbios) on adapter 0. Save, exit, reboot, load PnP ISA network card,
then the system hangs. There must be a conflict with some other
hardware (I think it's the disk drive), but I can't seem to turn off
the PnP Bios autoconfiguration, even when I go into the BIOS setup and
disactivate it. Anyone got any ideas ?
Thanks.
Alex.

Looks like you are running both NETBeui and TCPBeui on both systems.
So if you are having problems with both FTP and file/print sharing,
you may have multiple problems. That you can ping system A
from B means you do have the NIC driver on B set up OK and you have
a certain level of TCP/IP connectivity. Can you telnet from B to A?
How about TFTP from B to A? (Remember to set up the daemons on A).
I don't see anything which looks wrong with the setup.cmd's or the
protocol.ini's you posted. When running Warp on your B system,
what do you see when you do a 'net start' at the command line?
Also please post your \ibmcom\lantran.log and your \ibmlan\ibmlan.ini
from your b system.
You might also run netstat on both systems and compare them. The
-a, -i, -t, -s, -n and -r parameters should show if anything is wrong
with your TCP/IP configuration.

Boot to a DOS prompt and run the (????) setup166.exe program disk for your
card. I had my 8019 set for IRQ 11 and Port 340. I used the Eagle Tech driver

Mat,
I went back and read the readme in the first disk of W08620B1.DSK
where it mentioned
about a couple of files which were moved and to rename/delete the
obsolete ones. Well
I checked and my old files were still there (on both systems). I
guess due to my libpath
the old ones were being found first...
To make a long story short, after I made the appropriate deletions,
my tcpip connections worked ok
both ways FTP A->B and B->A :-)
But the Print & File Object on system B still was broken (Nothing
in the network tab in its properties)
I re-installed it, and now I do have a network tab which now shows
that the Network is unavailable.
So I need one last shove to get that up (B->A). On system A it
still shows the Network is available.
Thanks for the help.

The "Shares" tab only appears if you are logged on
as a "local administrator" for the machine. The ID and
password set up when installing the network software is
the "local administrator".

From: George McCabe <george.mccabe@gsfc.nasa.gov>
jon,
from the errors you describe, sounds like your connection to the network has
gone down. when browsing and email fails next time, try to ping your ISP's
name server to verify that the you have network access. if that ping fails,
then ping yourself. if necessary contact tech support at your ISP and tell
them your conection is bad.
one other thing, if this failure always occurs after a set amount of time
then i'ld look into power saving features which might be turned on in your
system.

Hi,
Outside of using the "local logon" and starting up UPMACCTS and trying
to
modify other user accounts. If it lets you do it the acccount you have
used to logon is an admin account.
I don't know of any way to change the local admin account unless you
are
logged in as the local admin.
If you are running on a Warp Server network, I was able to fake out a
system once by changing the IBMLAN.INI file to "forward" account
verification to the Domain Controller (Bit 37 in WRKHEURISTICS and use
the
"Local Logon" to log on as one of the LAN administrator accounts. This
let
me alter the local net.acc file accounts and get around the problem.
You can also replace the net.acc file with another one as long as the
requestor has not been started. The one created at installation time
should be in the \ibmlan\install directory. If you do this you have to
re-enter any changes made since installation.

I had the same problem early on also. The port mapping function is not
available with the standard version, you need the professional version.
IMHO, less people would be confused if the standard version was called
"InJoy Gateway" and the professional version "InJoy Firewall".
Another thing which I found very confusing is the system of multiple
config files (there are seven of them I believe). First of all, IJF
doesn't tell you which files it reads; then, if you put the commands in
the wrong file, it doesn't produce error messages, it simply ignores the
misplaced commands!

Sounds like good'ol Bjarne alright!

I was confused by this also. Discussions on IJF take place on the InJoy
Dialer list; I suggest you subscribe to it. Once it's up and running, IJF
is a great program.

There is a program called CHGSRVR.EXE that lives in
the \IBMLAN\NETPROG that is supposed to be
able to change the server name for the domain
controller.
As far as changing the domain name for the server
goes, I just changed mine to FREDS and I can
logon with no problem.
Take down the entire network (at least all the servers)
Edit the IBMLAN.INI file in \IBMLAN directory and
change the DOMAIN=????? line to your new
domain name on the Primary Domain Controller.
Then change the name on any additional servers.
And then run around to all the
workstations and change it there as well.

From: klcroxen@fas.harvard.edu (Kevin Croxen)
Maybe the problem isn't in your networking, but in your printing.
Printing locally or through a shared printer, depending on the
printer, could involve so much CPU overhead that there's not
enough left over do other tasks like networking in a satisfactory
fashion.
Since you mention that some printing is already being done through
peer sharing, perhaps you would do better by setting up one machine
as a dedicated print server, with a quality printer and with the whole
workgroup doing their printing to that machine. There is still the
possibility that large print jobs being spooled into the print-server's
queue will generate enough traffic to slow the network down, but
it doesn't really sound like the network traffic itself is your current
bottleneck.

Originally it was actually called the InJoy Gateway, but
that gave a lot of confusion too. One problem was that a
top-level name was needed to cover both versions (of the
same program) and we didn't want two sets of docs, web and
purchase options.

The documentation clarifies what files to use and even the
comments in the top of the files tell fairly clear what they
are used for..

That would be because your file included the information
needed by the firewall, so the firewall doesn't read the
rest of the file looking for displaced firewall rules.
If you put rules into files, by random, then you are
gonna get into problems with a lot of software though..

I don't think that's fair to say, but some people think they
know exactly how we should create our software and if we decline
their idea (which we obviously sometimes have to), then the
person will either understand, but some don't.

From: cbrace@lim.nl
Hi all,
I am on the road and trying to login remotely via my laptop using In-Joy
(v2). I can login into uunet and get a tcpip connection running, but for
some reason DNS doesn't work: I can only ping numeric IP addresses, and
I can't get mr2ice to poll by POP account, nor use Netscape ("server not
found" error msg).
When I run TCPSTART, I see something about "set to LAN only" flash by,
and I am wondering if the TCPIP settings are confused by the fact I was
using Peer services at home. In any case, I deleted PEER stuff from
MPTS. Still no go.
I am at a loss (and currently using a computer in an Internet cafe).
Anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe I was imagining it, but I was sure that the BellAtlantic rep I
spoke with about their DSL service said that OS/2 was supported. In the
install kit they sent, the CD with only Win software on it was the first
ominous sign, then the instruction booklets with only Win related
instructions in it, finally the voiced denial by their reps when I
phoned back to confirm.
They require a special signon after the TCP/IP (DHCP) connection using
proprietary software from IVasion named PoET, to be repeated at the
beginning of each session (even though the line is non-switched).
IVasion products are exclusively Win9x & NT. No static IP options. So
much for "always on".
Might this signon after all be a standardized process available in the
likes of InJoy? Has anyone else worked around a similar problem?

Dear OS/2 users,
we have a very heterogenous network with UNIX, PC's (Win95/98,311), Macs
and OS/2 (Warp4) computers. It is possible to communicate from OS/2 via peer
services with PC's and UNIX (Samba).
Since the network became so large (> 150 PC's) we made groups in the
Microsoft network and the OS/2 conputers are also members of any group.
It is no problem to communicate from a OS/2 computer to other computers
in a group. But it is not possible to connect to a member of an other
group. The peer services of OS/2 interprtes the groups of microsoft
network as a domain. I can not immediately write the connection mask
(e.g. \\orpheus\C ) but I can only select the hosts which are shown.
Is there a possibility to write the desidet connectin to a file and
give a command to execute it?

If you want networking help on this newsgroup you
will have to erase all copies of Windows 98 and
install OS/2 Warp 4 or Warp Server for e-Business.
This software is available from IBM and should
correct your network problems.
This is an OS/2 newsgroup not a Windows newsgroup.
Windows 9X Peer to Peer networking is prone to
random lockups and other problems. Try random
settings and re-installing Windows over and over
again until you give up and use different network
cards. Make sure you have a good backup of
all critical data files. Contact the network card
manufacturer and find out if there are updated
drivers. Erase all network drivers and Protocols
from the control panel and try the add new hardware.
Backup all files, format drive C on each machine and
install Windows 98 with the network cards in the
machine, adding network cards to Windows after
it is installed usually causes problems. Throw
your mouse through the wall and write on the
blackboard 1000 times
"I wll not use Windows Networking ever again"
Download Linux and try it out on both machines
if this works then your hardware is OK and you
can be sure the problems is Windows. Obtain
Star Office and Gimp for Linux and never use
Windows again. Buy OS/2, install in both machines
obtain Star Office and Gimp/2 for OS/2 and never
use Windows again.

The IBMLAN.INI file contains a parameter "OTHDOMAINS"
that can be used to list other domains "groups" that can
be accessed from the OS/2 workstations. List any oher
groups you want to access.
OTHDOMAINS = group1, group2, group3, etc
The ibmlan.ini file lives in the \IBMLAN directory.
The "othdomains" parameter is in the "[requester}"
group of parameters.

Drag and drop should work
open up the network drive in explorer and
right click the file and select "copy"
and copy it to a folder on the local drive
You should be able to open the files you
see on the other machine from your application.
File -> Open then select the file
