A little off topic...I bought a used Smart-UPS without a cable.
Does anyone know the pin configuration so I can make one?

It's *not* a standard serial cable. I think the pin connections may be on the
APC
web site (www.apcc.com) somewhere. Or if I can find my manual, it may be in
there.
I hope the price you paid is commensurate with the condition of the batteries.

Subj: Installation of Kensington Expert Mouse
From: l_luciano@da.mob (Stan Goodman)
I have purchased an Expert Mouse v5.0, and have installed it successfully
as
a PS/2 device in my OS/2 Warp4 system. I downloaded the OS/2 software from
your Website, and have installed it too.
Installation went without incident, and I rebooted the machine. Upon
attempting
to open the Control Panel, I was greeted with an error message telling me
that
EXMOUSE2.SYS must be loaded; why it is not loaded is not at all clear to
me. Here are the mouse-related lives from CONFIG.SYS:
DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VMOUSE.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\POINTDD.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\MOUSE.SYS
DEVICE=C:\KENSINGTON\EXMOUSE2.SYS
INIPATH=C:\KENSINGTON\EXSTART.INI (on the same line as "DEVICE")
As you can see, there is indeed an instruction for loading EXMOUSE2.SYS,
and
the file is in the expected directory. On the other hand, there is no
EXSTART.INI anywhere on the system. Since the installation program ran to
completion, apparently did what it was expected to do, and raised no error
messages, there would seem to be a bug somewhere.
The docs do not mention the INI file at all, except to mention in passing
that it can somehow call one or more of the preference files (*.PRF)
provided or user-constructed. How it does this and where it comes from are
left to the imagination of the user.
I have asked Kensington the above questions, and have received no answer,
perhaps because support is not a profitable pursuit (although issuing good
manuals can be shown to yield a good return)
I would like to be able to run the manufacturer's driver, and to make use
of all four buttons on this device. Does anyone know how to do this?

Problem Solved!!!
The bottom line: Ignore The Instructions! Use the black smart-signaling
cable on a
Back-UPS Pro 650 (and maybe other Pro models) even though APC's instructions
say not
to.
From page 3 of their latest update to their instruction manual:
"The Smart-UPS and Matrix-UPS product lines support smart signalling."
then: "All UPS manufactured by APC that have serial ports support simple
signaling."
So, because I do not have a Smart or Matrix UPS and since it sounded like I
couldn't
go wrong with the simple cable, I thought that it had to be the right cable.
Wrong!
After attaching the smart cable, make sure that UPSD.EXE starts before
starting
Pwrchute.exe. Choose Smart cable in the Powerchute Plus menu and if you get a
weird
message erroneously telling you that you are on battery power when you are
not, shut
down these apps and restart them in the same order as before. That should fix
the
problem. Everything works now!
Thanks to all who contributed comments and suggestions, especially Alan, who
was right
all along about using the smart cable, but I dared not contradict the APC
instruction
manual until Jennifer from APC told me to do so. She is great!

Here's a long'shot. Are you familiar with "Tom's Hardware Guide" at
http://www.tomshardware.com? Tom's interested in all sorts of hardware
stuff, and seems to be generally pro-AMD. His web site is quite well
known too. If you email him and let him know what's going on, he may be
able to publicise this problem on his site, or even point you to someone
inside AMD who can help. As I said, a long shot, but maybe worth trying.
It's an interesting web site anyway!
Graham.

My experience may not be directly related, but I had COM driver problems
with UPS software from TRIPP LITE. (BTW, they told me that they were not
supporting OS/2 any longer.) I have been using the beta SIO 2.0 drivers
for some time, but was unable to communicate with the UPS (using
proprietary cable). However, SIO 2.0 allows configuration of the port
interfaces. I made it ignore the UPS port, and then installed the
standard COM.SYS for that one. Actually the COM.SYS is installed first,
then SIO2k. Works fine that way and I can still use my high speed com on
the other ports.

Having only wseb beta I played around with it a little bit. I
successfully managed to install VT on wseb!!! Here is how I did it:
VT is installed using feature installer which seems to have many
different faces - the netscape front end, the little-known Command
Line FI (clifi.exe) and a WPS class called wpinstall. Objects of this
class can be found in the "os2\install\installed features" directory
of your bootdrive. You will need one of them but you'll see later.
First, we need the response file of the installation program. On a
command line, change to a new directory (just so you don't make a mess
of your system), insert the Warp4 CD and type "unpack
x:\os2image\disk_11\bundle /n:fibase.rsp" (where x: is your cd-rom
drive letter), which will unpack the response file to the directory.
The response file comes with default settings which can be used if you
want to install VT on your bootdrive. If you want to install it to a
different drive, you have to edit the response file. Search for
"TargetDrive" and change the value from {BootDrive} to the drive
letter of your choice, like "D:".
Now open the above mentioned directory "os2\install\installed
features" on your bootdrive. There should be a couple of objects with
package-like icons in it. From the context menu of any one of them,
select "Create another" to create an object of the same class
(WPInstall) anywhere you please, preferrably in the directory where
the response file is located. From the context menu of this newly
created object, select "Response file" -> "Read" and specify your
response file in the file dialog. Now a window should appear telling
you that settings are rebuilt from a response file.
Now you're just about set to install VT. Open the install object (it
should appear in tree view) and deselect everything BUT VT (or
whatever the equivalent is of your NLS installation - in German it was
"Voice Type"). Hit the install button. You might have to specify the
source of the files which is "x:\os2image\fi", where x: is your cd-rom
drive letter. Reboot. Drag the directory to your shredder. This is
important as choosing "Delete" from the context menu result in another
installation attempt by the install object.
That's it - and have fun!!!

I have the mouse drivers installed in the OS2 directory (my boot drive

DEVICE=D:\OS2\MDOS\VMOUSE.SYS
DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\POINTDD.SYS
REM DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\MOUSE.SYS

The EXSTART.INI file is in D:\OS2, and looks like this:
[ExStartup]
Version=4.00
[ExDefault]
Version=4.00
Acceleration=9
Left=Left
Right=Right
Middle=DoubleLeft
TopRight=LockRight
Chord=Chord
ChordSpeed=96
All 4 buttons work OK for me. Hope this helps.

In your config.sys there probably are statements like this:
DEVICE=x:\OS2\BOOT\OS2CDROM.DMD /Q
IFS=x:\OS2\BOOT\CDFS.IFS /Q
DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VCDROM.SYS
Change the /Q to /V on the DEVICE=x:\OS2\BOOT line and delete /Q from
the IFS line. This will provide diagnostic output when the drivers are
loaded. This may help you diagnose your problem. There may be other
options on the IFS line. Type 'help os2cdrom.dmd' and/or 'help cdfs.ifs'
at an OS/2 command prompt for more information.
Good luck
Jim

Subj: Create file association that works from command prompt?
From: "David Thacker" <David @ Thackernet.com>
Greetings,
I've been trying to associate certain files with a specific extension to a
program, from the command line. Is this possible? I haven't had any
success.
What I'd like to do, for example, is associate all perl files (*.pl) with
c:\emx\bin\perl.exe so that I can execute them simply by entering the
filename (eg. test.pl).
Anyone figured out how to do this? I can do it for WPS objects, but not
from the command line.
Thanks,

Perhaps a PL.cmd, where:
"pl <filename>"
would execute said program and load the preferred file. It might look
something like this:
Echo off
c:\emx\bin\perl.exe %1
I'm not a programmer, this is just a possible .CMD file, NOT REXX.
Just a thought.

I'm not sure how you'd do it with the stock CMD.EXE, but if you
use 4OS2 it's a snap. Just define .pl as an "executable
extension" pointing to "c:\emx\bin\perl.exe" and from then on,
whenever you type "test.pl" (or even just "test" if test.pl is in
your path), perl will be invoked to run test.pl

As someone who has had 2 x shortlived Seagate 8Gb SCSI tape
drives and 3 other shortlived Seagate products and purchased
both Backmaster and Backagain/2:
a) I cannot recommend any Seagate product;
b) Backmaster didn't suppport the Seagate SCSI drive (out of
the box - I don't know if they have posted a update or
upgrade that does - my own experience with Backmaster is
that it has a 100% failure rate on making restoreable
backups on equipment allegedly supported;
c) Backagain works well with the Seagate tape unit but also
seems to create apparently successful backups that aren't
(or if they are are non restoreable) on occassion (to often
for me to have any confidence in it alone as a backup)
I recommend that you invest in downloading and learning the
linux like ports that are around (i would say more but I
haven't as yet had the time to figure them out (learning

That is not applicable to the command line.
I supect the original poster will need to write a REXX command, to
decode the file extension, and start the correct program.

How many generations of backups are you going to make to a removable hard
disk?
I realize that the initial cost of a tape drive is higher, but the incremental
cost for additional backups and the ease of storing backups off site is a
tremendous plus.
Using DAT, a 4GB (uncompressed) backup costs less than $10.
And what happens if the hard disk controller goes belly up? The backup is
likely to be worthless too.

CMD.EXE has been able to do this for many years. Type "help EXTPROC"
(it works exactly like like unix "!#" as in "!#/bin/sh" etc)
Note this is nothing to do with "associations" in the WPS sense of
the word - EXTPROC may not be a suitable solution for you!

I originally wrote regardinng the Iomega drive whose installation put
the Iomega tools inn the Win/os2 start-up file...cause the system to
Trap....Upon getting your advise, I removed the startup file and and
the problem when away....The Iomega tools were of no use to me as I use
the OS/2 system to manage the contents of the drive and this works just
fine.

Thanks for the tip Simon, I was not aware of the EXTPROC feature. However,
this only seems to work if the extproc command is within a .cmd (and
probably .bat) file. If I place it within a .pl or .cgi file, it still
doesn't trick cmd.exe into running the extproc command if I try to execute
the .pl or .cgi file directly. Eg. trying to run test.pl still generates a
"not a command file" error.
Thanks anyway, though, I'm sure I'll find a use for extproc sometime.

Certainly. Just use a "proper" shell :-) like bash or pdksh.
These can interpret the "shebang" ( #! perl ) at the beginning of perl
scripts.
Or you could try renaming the .pl script to .cmd and putting
extproc d:/perllib/bin/perl -wS
in the first line

Oops - yes forgot about that. You *could* still use EXTPROC if you:
1. Rename (or copy) all appropriate .pl files to .cmd files
(Note there may be good reasons why you cannot do this).
2. Ensure all the renamed .pl files begin with "EXTPROC X:/path/perl.exe"
(or whatever the path to your perl interpreter is).
As I said, EXTPROC may not be a suitable solution for you!

First off, I am assuming you are putting the hard
drive in a "drawer" that can be removed from a
chassis that remains with the CPU box.
To reap full benefit of backups, the media holding
the backed up data should be stored in a location
away from the building the computer is located.
This requires transporting the storage media on a
regular basis, which is not what a typical hard
drive is designed for and you risk damaging the
HD. Moreover, such damage may not be noticeable
until you NEED the data for recovery.
Tape/MO/CD-R/JAZ/whatever with removable
disk/cartridge may be more expensive one way or
another, you get the intended protection that data
backup offers.

Howard Wong

It is a simple file called open.exe. If you type "open dog.txt" then it
behaves as if you had double-clicked on it from the WPS. It works for
folders and what not as well.
Hope this helps.

Subj: DualStor Restore (help?)
From: "Spencer Lee" <sleeman@*nospam*ottawa.com>
Hello all OS/2 gurus,
Got a bit of a problem I'm hoping someone here can offer advice for.
I have a customer sending me a back up of a bunch of files on QIC-80 tapes
from a PS/2 machine running OS/2, and backed up with DualStor.
I need to get these files into a Windows machine.
I am getting a copy of OS/2, and I have a Colorado Jumbo 250 tape drive,
which I understand DualStor supports, so I could (if I had a copy of
DualStor) set up an OS/2 computer on my network, restore the files, and copy
them over to a Windows box (I think).
Questions:
Is there a Windows version of DualStor which will restore the files from the
OS/2 DualStor backup? (from what I've gathered, the files that DualStor
creates on the tape are 'EA' files - not sure if the Windows version uses
the same format).
What do I have to do, and where can I get a copy of the DualStor software
that I need?
Thanks muchly,
Sleeman

I have the same four lines in my CONFIG.SYS (with changes per directory

manually created file (which should have been created automatically by the
installation program), all this with no result. The symptoms remain: the
Kensington driver does not load.
Two email messages to Kensington have brought me an email resonse from the
company. It is so surprising that I want to share its text with users of

Dear Stan,
If you are running OS/2 Warp by itself then our mouse will only show as a 2
button mouse.
If you are running OS/2 on top of Windows then we suggest you install v5.30
off our web to which should give you all 4 buttons.
We do not provide technical support for the OS/2 Operating System itself.
If you have any further questions or concerns PLEASE USE FORWARD to
reply back to us, fax us, or you can call us on this matter due to we
may better help you over the phone (number and hours listed below).
Thank you for your continued interest in Kensington products.

No, for the record, I am not running OS/2 over Windows; I am running OS/2
all by itself, suspended, as it were, in the air.
Now that I have exhausted the depth of the advice available from Kensington
"Technical Support", can anyone tell me how to address a message (by email,
fax, paper mail, or carrier pigeon) to someone at Kensington who may be
interested in the kind of twit that is giving out advice to paying
customers?
Any advice about the driver problem will be gratefully received.

At the present time, maybe if there are any left you can buy an AIWA SCSI
tape drive which uses TRAVAN 4 cartridges. Try computergeeks and
http://www.cc-solutions.com/ also called complete computer solutions. I
got one of these a year ago and it is great. I am running it off of a
cheap SCSI card with Nova bak. These two vendors are also a terrific
source for SCSI and video and NIC cards as well as other stuff.

IBM abandoned DualStor two years (or more) ago. You might be able to pick up a
copy somewhere -- ebay?
Ver. 2.0 handled the 250MB (compressed) tapes. Ver. 3.0 handled 800MB
(compressed) tapes.
As for the 'EA' bit: OS/2 makes use of "extended attributes" (EAs) that can be
used to store all kinds of information such as date and time of last access,
associations, descriptive filename. Using OS/2's High Performance File System
(HPFS), the EAs are stored as part of the file/directory structure; using the
DOS/Win FAT file system, the EAs are stored in a file on each drive named EA
DATA. SF (note the two spaces).
If the files you are restoring are data files, I assume that the loss of any
EAs
is of no consequence.

I have Kensington expert "mice" installed on 3 machines running OS/2. I
had been really pleased with their driver support for OS/2 until I read

Anyway, if you would like me to email you a copy of the installation

No, but many thanks. I have got it to work by putting the files in the
C:\OS2 directory. When the installation program asked me where I wanted
them, I gave another destination, and the install did what I told it --
then the driver refused to work. The Control Panel program still doesn't
work, but I can give that up.

Can't see how it will - why is typeing "Open perlscript.pl" better
than typing "perl perlscript.pl"?
The idea is to be able to type (just) "perlscript".

I apologize if this is a bit off topic but it seems
to apply.
I just tried a stupid test on a file containing
echo off
echo show this stuff
I saved it with the name "test.blob" using e.exe and set
the type to OS/2 command file.
It won't execute from the command line with the command
test.blob
When I double-click on from an icon view it just shows me
the properties. A right click open as -> program also
shows the the properties notebook.
The CMD command line interpreter only seems to be
able to execute command files that end in .cmd
regardless of the "File Type".
There also seems to be a bug in the WPS for
executing files with a "File Type" of "OS/2 command file"
even though it shows the option of starting the file as
a program.
Renaming the file "test.blob" to "test.cmd" lets it
execute in both environments.
This is on WSeB, Warp 4 may behave differently.

This is true. CMD.EXE has no notion of filetypes, as that's a WPS
thing.

No, the bug is not in WPS, but it's the same problem with CMD.EXE.
CMD.EXE will be started to run the cmd file, but is unable to do so
since it has a bogus extension. This means CMD.EXE will terminate with
an error, and WPS thinks the app is set up wrong. It's the same thing
that happens when trying to run an app with a missing DLL. WPS
displays the properties notebook instead of saying that there's a
missing DLL.
Seems WPS only is able to determine if the app could start or not, and
has no way of differentiate between different errors.

Think it's been the same since 2.0.

Ah, I see. It's too bad that CMD is not EA aware.
I just looked at my test file with EABROWSE (from hobbes) and
the EA contents show a .CLASSINFO EA as a WPCommandFile
and a WPProgramFile and a .TYPE EA as a
"OS/2 Command File".
The EA's associated with the file have the file type embedded
in it. So CMD "should" look at that to see whether or not
the file is marked as an OS/2 command file and run it if it is.
AFAIK EA are part of the overall file handling, so this would work
even if PM and/or WPS are not present.
Of course if CMD did that then the whole problem with the
Perl scripts would not exist because the CMD
program would execute the perl script, find the EXTPROC
command and run it in Perl.
Live and learn, thanks for the infomation.
What do you think the chances of IBM fixing this are if we
report it as a "bug" in CMD.EXE? :-)

Yes (qualifications follow)
If the files are on a local disk, install one of the VFAT
file systems. Look at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu
This will work as long as the partition the files are on
is visible to OS/2 at boot time (ie: not Hidden).
If the files are on a separate machine and you are
using the "File and Peer Services Client" you will
only see the short filenames because of a restriction
in the Windows 98 NETBIOS/SMB network implementation.

I'm very glad you finally got it to work.
I'm still depressed about the Kensington support though. One of the
machines I have a Kensington Expert Mouse installed on is a dual boot
machine, with OS/2 Warp and NT. The NT driver acceleration doesn't
work very well compared to the OS/2 driver, and the 3rd and 4th button
mappings don't work.
I suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, and chose the Kensington Expert
Mouse because of the large trackball, which lets me move my entire arm
instead of my wrist, and the extra buttons, which reduce finger motions
for clicks. IMHO, Kensington has the premier hardware product for
people with CTS, but they seem to be letting us down with their driver
support.

Pack the files using ZIP.EXE in WIN98 and unpack them using UNZIP.EXE in OS/2.
Or if you are using FAT32 file system in WIN98, install Henk Kelder's FAT32
driver for OS/2.
If you are using plain old FAT in WIN98, the also exists some WINxx-style
longname driver
for OS/2 but I cannot recommend it.

Yep, agree on that. Actually I find it a bit strange that noone has
fixed it yet. Obviously the cmd line has had no priority at IBM, but
4OS2 should have thought about this.

It's a bit more complicated, actually. For "OS/2 Command file"s this
would work as you describe, but why not fix it so it works with all
files? The .classinfo contains the wps class that should be used to
open a view of the file. So preferrably the shell should instantiate
an object of that class using the file. That would require the cmd.exe
to be wps aware.
But of course the filetype thing would help a lot on it's own!

Very slim I would guess, but by all means, report it! They have a form
somewhere on the web for that, don't they?
Take Care!

Subj: Deskop On-Call OS/2 problem with ctrl-keys
From: "David Thacker" <David @ Thackernet.com>
Greetings,
I purchased IBM Desktop On-Call 2.5 for OS/2 a few weeks back (download from
ShopIBM) and have been testing it on a couple machines. Overall, I am very
happy with the product (and a good deal at $40), but I have come across a
few problems. There is no metnion anywhere in the product documentation of
a support contact, and submitting OS/2 product defect support forms has been
fruitless. Perhaps someone else here can help?
1. I connect to my OS/2 DTOC server via web browser from Win2K workstation
using either MSIE5 or Nav4.61. When I open or view a fullscreen OS/2
session on the server, the client just displays random garbage, and I can no
longer control the server. On the server, the fullscreen session is
displayed properly. If I exit the FS session by typing at the server, the
remote desktop reappears on the client. So, it seems i am unable to work
with OS/2 fullscreen sessions remotely. Has anyone been able to do this?
2. When I try to send a ctrl-key sequence to the server, it is just
interpretted as the plain "uncontrolled" key. I toggle the CTRL button on
the client, then press the C key to send a CTRL-C, but the server sees and
interprets only a "c". Has anyone been able to get ctrl or alt key combos
to work from the client?
Thanks for any tips you can provide.
BTW, the DTOC home page is http://www.jp.ibm.com/esbu/E/dtoc

Subj: Secure Internet ?
From: Peter Stahl <peter.stahl@abc.se>
Hi.
I'm connecting to internet by a 33.6 kbs modem using
Injoy + Smart Cache (Proxyserver) + Internet Adventurer
and Netscape 4.61.
Can anyone read and modify my disk from internet while
I'm logged on to internet ?
If so, what good does the Proxyserver do ?
I know it is a cache but is the security better ?
There is a Firewall to bye to Injoy, do I need it
and is it worth it ?
Any recommendations apriciated !

Subj: Boot from Zip or Jaz ?
From: Peter Stahl <peter.stahl@abc.se>
Hi.
I wounder if someone knows an utility that makes me boot
from a zip or jaz drive ?
Is there a program that fits on one diskette, boots the computer
and continues booting from zip or jaz drive ?
I have only SCSI HD's and JAZ-drives.
The ideal was to use BOOTOS2 to make one bootdisk and a
bootable PM-partition on the jaz-drive. But I'm not sure
thats done.

I think you might like Henk Kelder's latest release of wptools
http://www.os2ss.com/information/kelder/
He has added DEFASSOC.EXE, the help of which is:
DEFASSOC version 1.0 for OS/2 32 bits.
A program to inspect associations or set the default association.
Made by Henk Kelder.
USAGE: DEFASSOC assoctype [filter|type [associated_program [/R]]]
assoctype must be F(ilter) or T(ype)
use /R to remove an association
Example:
DEFASSOC F *.HTM E:\NETSCAPE\NETSCAPE.EXE
NOTE 1: If an argument contains blanks or is like <xxx>
embed it with double quotes.
NOTE 2: filters or type are CASE SENSITIVE!
