Subj: MAMERun beta 2
From: stefanj@gte.net (Jason Stefanovich)
I just uploaded beta 2 my OS/2 PM frontend MAMERun for
the DOS version of MAME to Hobbes, you can
also get it at my home directory.
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/mrunb2.zip
http://home1.gte.net/stefanj/mrunb2.zip
This is the ONLY frontend for DOS MAME under OS/2.
Whats New:
* Fixed bug with the "Flip Y" button
* Fixed clipping and scaling problem with MAMERun bitmap
* Removed the need for an external bitmap
* Removed the maximize button from all windows
* Removed the minimize button from modal windows
* Added Norm Ross's STARTD program
* Customized the DOS environment to allow the running of large ROMs
and enhance emulation speed
What is it:
MAMERun is a FREEWARE OS/2 PM frontend for the DOS version of MAME
(Multi. Arcade Machine Emulator). A Frontend is a program that
makes it easier for the user to interface with their application,
which usually has a command line interface. MAME is a very popular
emulator that allows you to run thousands of classic arcade
games on your PC (if you own the ROMs). You can find the MAME
homepage at http://mame.retrogames.com/. The Official
(and very good) OS/2 PM port of MAME was done by
Marty Amodeo and is at http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com/.
Requirements:
OS/2
MAME for DOS (I used version .36 beta 7)
DOS Support installed
RexxUtil
joystick device driver (for joystick support, download from hobbes or
DDPAK)
ROMs (DO NOT ASK ME FOR, OR WHERE TO GET ROMS!!)

Subj: MAME for OS/2 .36 beta 8 is available
From: Marty <mamodeo@stny.rr.com>
With the official DOS version less than 12 hours old, I've completed my
port of MAME .36 beta 8.
MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.
It allows you to play your favorite classic, and some not-so-classic
arcade games (from the 70's through the 90's) from the comfort of your
OS/2 desktop.
The OS/2 version has been updated to the latest version of the MAME core
(.36 beta 8). If you are upgrading from beta 6 or beta 7, it will
automatically update your Quick List and scan for newly supported games
the first time you start it up so you don't have to manually rescan
everything from scratch and erase your Favorites list.
In addition to the new games supported, some bugs were fixed from the
previous beta. Namco System 1 games (such as Pacmania) should now be
working again, and The Simpsons now has correct graphics emulation on
the DreamLand stage if you have the patience to get that far. ;-)
Enjoy!

I liked mine until the fire button broke. That was replaced under warranty.
The
tech hinted that they had a new supplier for the switches because of that
problem. Nope, the second one broke. Finally, the third one broke and I'd had
enough (and was out of warranty, I think). I bought a Gravis
Blackhawk, which worked for about 9 mos and then IT broke the fire button. Two
more of those
have worn out pots withing 3 months. I guess no one makes a joystick I can't
break with normal
use.

Next time, try entering something in the body.
I'm not sure what you mean, but Quake II is OpenGL and can be converted to
run.

I'm using a CH wingman pro that I've had for a number of years. I
play Descent with it. I croaked the hat switch on the first one, but
after I moved the fire function to the keyboard (ctrl key -- next to
the arrow keys I use to move) I've had no problem with this one at
all. I had to move the fire switch because I couldn't use the hat and
fire at the same time.

Yea, Sounds like you're pretty hard on your equipment...How long do
keyboards last you?

Subj: Vice/2
From: Thomas Bretz <tbretz@physik.tu-muenchen.de>
Hello all,
the first release of Vice/2 - the OS/2 port of VICE - the versatile
commodore emulator - is available. There are many features missing yet,
but the emulation (only C64 yet) should work and the whole
functionallity should be available via command line.
Vice/2 uses DIVE and DART at the moment.
Please send bugreports and suggestions to mailto:tbretz@gsi.de
You can find the binaries at:
http://www.prakt.physik.tu-muenchen.de/tbretz/vice2/
Have fun,
Thomas.

Who would have thought? Sometimes you DO get positively surprised. 8-)
Some hours ago I tried to run the setup program for my Gravis Firebird2
joystick in an OS/2 DOS-box. It refused to start showing a message that
a driver Phoenix$ was missing. Well, after fiddling around a bit I read
the message more closely and it said "Unable to load the Phoenix OS/2
Configuration Manager". OS/2????? This little program knew where it was
running. The Phoenix is another joystick by Gravis. I had a look at the
directory listing and discovered a file "FIREBIRD.SYS" which a loaded
into a hex-editor. And there it was: "this is an OS/2 16-bit dynamic
link library" and "Phoenix OS/2 Configuration Manager v 0.98 by
David Bollo". So I added a DEVICE statement to my CONFIG.SYS and
rebooted to see the above message. The setup program is working fine
now. This driver seems to provide hardware access to the setup program
that is neccessary to be able to program the joystick.
So if you have a programmable Gravis joystick and you like to play DOS
and Windows games under OS/2 like me (a lot of them DO run better under
OS/2) then search your utility program's directory for this driver!
