Subj: Dual Display under Warp
From: wpooh@freemail.c3.hu
Hi!
Is it possible to use Warp 4.0 (no fix) with two (one AGP and one PCI
) display adapter?

AFAIK it should be possible with Scitech Display Doctor for OS/2 (at least in
the final release). Check http://www.scitechsoft.com

There may be a version difference here, as the "M'
designation does not usually appear, but the 5430 is a standard
PCI card with embedded OS/2 drivers. I also found that my
instructions for the 5426 may not be applicable, but as I have a
WWW page with relevant information:

There should not really be any harm done in trying different
video drivers. Just remember to set your system to plain VGA
(at the Boot Blob) first each time.
>Could you possibly explain to me the significance of the INTA

PCI should auto detect and auto configure everything. AFAIK,
everything on INTA gets assigned unique addresses to avoid
conflicts. The Cirrus based cards are cheap, so the
documentation may not always be up to snuff. Your card may have
had a jumper in a previous version, but they may have removed
it, as that configurability is not usually on a PCI video card.

Subj: os2 warp3 video cards
From: Michael Part <mpart@NOSPAMinnerstation.net>
I am building some computers for testing equipment and they run on
os/2 and I'd like to know if there's a BEST recent video card that
works with stability in this os. Is there any problem with using AGP?
This can only be done with the out-of-the-box os/2 warp 3 -- no packs
or anything. I've tried an ATI with lousy results. Installed okay,
but upon reboot got a huge memory crash and had to reboot and alt-f1
the video back to vga.
I'm gonna try a g200. Problem is -- is there a video adaptor (agp
preferably) that will be AVAILABLE for a while that installs without
too many hitches?
Really appreciate any advice as os/2 is fairly new to me and the video
card seems to be a stumbling block right now.

Another insteresting thing is that software cursors work fine (without any
jerkiness) when using DIVE apps which is cool.
One minor annoyance I've got is that for some strange reason Java icons are
shown as 16 colours only when using 16bit (65k) color mode on my Matrox
Millenium (and S3 Trio64) before that.
Can somebody verify if this has been fixed in Beta 7? I have this with Gradd
0.80 too. :(

Again - apart from the obvious that not all "drivers" are "resource
manager" aware the fact that you have apparently "four" IRQ's(3,5,6 &
13) discrepancies between both RMVIEW and NF may(or not) be indicative
that you have a basic resource conflict?.
Why NF doesn't list the typical COM2 (IRQ3) default along with IRQ5
(perhaps either soundblaster or LPT2?) may not be relevant but actually
related to lack of service applied to the NF component?. Checking (and
detailing) what serial/lpt ports etc are currently enabled in Bios may
help along with disabling (temporarily) everything not actually
required.
Again selectively reserving resources in "Legacy adapters" (or
equivalent in your Bios setup) may yield some clues if not improvement.
There again the "conflict" may be base/io address,DMA or even video
shadow memory related and not directly IRQ related?.

Errr ok, admittedly I wasn't explicit<g>, but presumably knowing that
Warp is not completely ideal as far as PnP is concerned have you tried
disabling PnP and manually setting all resources?
Even though you've removed Sound/NIC cards is there any possibility that
your mobo has onboard equivalent of some of these(inc video)? Sometimes
even apparently disabling these via mobo jumpers can still leave
conflict problems?

Specifically is this a "black screen" with just a top LH flashing cursor
possibly implying a problem with partition table and/or OS/2 boot
loader? or totally "void" indicating possibly a more fundamental
problem with video?

If you've backed up INI's/Desktop then I don't see the necessity for
re-connecting the old HDD before cleaning up? The errors appear to be
expected based on EPM's (non) availability or different location and if
you take precaution of backing up then you minimise risk of deleting(via
repair) something you subsequently need .
However it looks unlikely this is related to your problem anyway but
depending on the amount of "activity" on your desktop some preventative
routine maintenance/housekeeping is always benificial.
If you don't have a "backup script" to selectively restore program
reference objects etc then you may well be reluctant to "clean up"
current extraneous handles/pointers and then subsequently have to
manually re-create(or migrate) those objects for items yet to be
transferred over later.
However, as the system is not currently reliable/stable, I would
personally be inclined to concentrate on simplifying the "variables" and
configuration to absolute minimum and resolve the basic problem first
and then "worry" about re-installing/configuring later......
Considering the "lack of usuability" and the fact you still have
original HDD to fall back on I would be tempted to:
1.. Disable PnP - manually allocate resources, reserving "legacy
resources" as required.
If this results in consistent bootable WPS then also -
2. Install latest FP in order to minimise problems with GUI and
video......

Circumstantially could still relate to PMMERGE (which invariably changes
in each FP) and/or video driver combination.

.From your recent elaboration on the symptoms I doubt whether SC/WC/LP
etc is responsible but at the expense of some minor inconvenience in not
(re) autostarting programs and open folders it's recommended to remove
as many "variables" as possible when faultfinding. As FP's are cumulative
one could preview the included APAR lists to see if any "fixes" relate
first.
Even with WinXX at some point one may be forced to "backup" and try a
service pack when either number of "faults" become pervasive or
functionality/productivity is significantly impacted.
Probably better to "bite the bullet" and endure the learning pain by
applying the fix while the OS has not been totally customised and
additional apps re-installed?.
However if WPS/system is not consistently bootable then attempting to
apply a FP will only initially exacerbate the problem...

FWIW, I seem to recall that Cirrus 54xx drivers have always been a tad
problematic in either installation or use at certain res/color depths
with certain apps thru all OS/2 2.x/3/4 incarnations.....

Interesting and obviously begs the question as to whether a common
(video h/w/bios or disk) problem exists?Again it's doubtful whether
there is any filesystem related fault that is causing this problem but
running latest CHKDSK should be part of your routine PM(preventative
maintenance) and housekeeping routine. If you don't apply latest
fixpaks then you have to download these (and latest IDEDASD etc) drivers
seperately.....

Only you can decide whether further effort is justified in that
potential scenario.
Further progress will probably require some tedious and time consuming
effort in checking popup logs, disabling PnP-manually allocating
resources,checking/running video diags, applying fixpaks, possibly even
disabling WPS exception handler etc to try and establish whether one or
more cumulative faults exist?
Also overall you would have to supply much more quantitative info/detail
so others can check and compare both your configuration and any error
logs with their own.
If you have no convenient opportunity of both trying your existing card
in another PC and "borrowing" another, together with a preponderance of
relatively "cheap" graphic cards available then perhaps further effort
isn't justified over and above an academic interest?

Subj: trick the video card ?
From: sbo@hehe.com (Steen Bondo)
Hi all
I have a nice, but old 21" monitor. Unfortunately my video card is
unable to detect this rather old slow screen. I do know for a fact that
this monitor can do a lot more than VGA - I've run 1024x724x65K
previous. To do that I mounted an other monitor, let the video card
detect this monitor, and then mounted my beloved 21" again. But after I'
ve moved, I only have this big monitor. And after a hardware updating
my pc got to fast for the old setting for the monitor. :-) Therefore I
had to back down to VGA.
Is there a way to fool the card, or can I possibly fetch C:\OS2\BOOT\
VIOTBL.DCP from an other computer, with the same card, and use these in
CONFIG.SYS ??
SET VIDEO_DEVICES=VIO_SVGA
SET VIO_SVGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA,BVHSVGA)
Instead of these..:
SET VIDEO_DEVICES=VIO_VGA
SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
???????
21" are nice, but in plain VGA... hmm.....

Has anyone set up OS/2 on PC with an ATI MACH64CT-C2 chip?
I had this working until Saturday, after spending many hours
trying to get it configured in the first place. I was trying to install
a sound card using 'Selective Install', and found the video settings
were 'updated' and now I can't get them working again.
I have managed to get three different sets of driver for ATI chips in addition
to the latest GRADD drivers, but always have some sort of problem in
either DOS or WIN-OS2.
Can someone tell me which drivers I should use?

Uhuh. I have the same problem with the latest drivers for a Trio 64V2 (775).
The latest drivers from S3 include a utility for 'DDC compliant' monitors.
These DDC monitors, I suspect, have the ability to report back supported
frequencies.
Now, when your monitor says 'I am DDC compliant', but it is not quite, you
end up with a 60Hz DDC monitor. Just like you, I could not get the driver to
accept more than 60Hz,
even using full capabilities.
My solution was to back down to an earlier driver.
Maybe you could attach an old vga monitor (to prevent DDC from triggering).
Needless to say:
at reboot: ALT-F1 , F3 (reinstall VGA)
after reboot: reinstall drivers
reboot
select settings
reboot

For PCI (and possibly AGP), it's possible to have more than 1 video
adaptor simultaneously. But to use them, you'll need proper software
drivers.
When you have multiple video adaptors, my guess is the video card with
lowest memory location would be used.

Okay, so I'm only picking up this thread from the middle...I've no
idea what monitor you're using, so you milege may vary....
I had trouble setting up my NEC multisync XV15 to use a higher refresh
using the Aztech labs Savage3d card (s3 chip).
I solved the problem by going to the appropriate settings page and
selected 640x480x60Hz refresh. I selected DDC monitor again, and used
the utility.
When I switched back to the XV15 settings, I was able to use
everything - refresh, colours, etc....
..but the list box in Wordpro didin't work right, and my Links for
OS/2 didnt' display the top view properly. After much annoyence, I
happened upon the Stardock webpage FAQ on the links game and saw
*another* card that had the same problem w/ Links. The fix was to run
the game @ 16bit (thousands of colours) instead of 32bit (millions of
Colours).
So I tried resetting to 16bit, and everything displays properly at
75Hz refresh.
I did try the older driver, but ran into a stack problem when my
screensaver ran a slideshow. 32bit colours did display everything
properly *except* Links.
So, try the above, it may work for you.
Pete.

When using the Matrox driver 2.31, I too get the problem where my
monitor loses the signal just before the WPS starts. Fortunatley I don't
reboot too often so this isn't a problem :-)

My question wasn't clear enough I think... (my fault)
I'd like to ask if it is possible to *have* two display adapter in one
computer while I use warp 4 on it? I don't need the 'dual display'
feature like G400. I only need the two cards in my box.
So, could this work?

Configure the card for the resolution and refresh rate that will work with

How this is done will vary, _depending on the card_.

AGP S3 something - 4MB ram. I don't have the manual that easy
accessable. When needed I can of course get it. OS/2 thinks it's a S3
864/868 - probably pretty close. Unless you know what files that needs
to be replaced on my system, this is not yet important.

See.! It's here the card need to be tricked to be able to do that.
According to my System object I only have the VGA option. The card/
system are unable to run the HW test on my monitor - therefore it
leaves me only with the VGA option.
PD> How this is done will vary, _depending on the card_.
So far I try with OS/2's drivers - wont make any difference as long as
the HW test fails.!
Regards - and thanks.

From: "zeppelin@gte.net" <zeppelin@gte.net>
Hope one of you that are skilled in deciphering "popup" message codes
will shed a little lite for me, (and if you have any guidelines that can
make me self sufficient in this area, I'd be even more grateful, this
obviously useful info has always been a "black art" puzzle to me)
The issue at hand is that I've got an ATI (#@^%$#@&) 3D Pro Turbo 8 meg
card that while pretty, has ALWAYS had some form of Disfunction, with
the disfunction varying from driver set to driver set. A problem under
the OEM driver, doesn't exist at all in the Gradd driver (S),{examples:
getting SVGA drivers to load with all 8 meg of video Ram installed, and
poor control over refresh rates} and problems that seem unavoidable
under gradd, never before existed with the OEM drivers {examples: FS
sessions of Win-OS2 and DOS run fine, but Seamless Win-OS2 sessions
refuse to launch, and DOS windows open, but only a flashing cursor comes
up, no autoexec.bat scroll, and no "C" prompt}
The "seamless" problem has been a fixture ever since fixx pak 8, and is
introduced into my system whenever I apply Fixxpaks 8,9, or 10 to my
system when it is at a fixpak 7 level, or when ever I install any of the
gradd drivers.
Currently, my system is at fixxpak 10 level, and I only recently was
able to get Seamless "win-OS2" sessions to work by (1. uninstalling all
"enhanced" or "SVGA" drivers, 2. cleaning up all .ini files3. using
selective Uninstall to remove all support fo Dos and Win-os2, 4.
rebooting and then reinstalling support for Dos and Win-OS2, Then, while
at 640x480x16 color (as required by the "default" video of selective
install) Dos windows and Seamless Win-OS2 sessions run fine, but if I
then attempt to install any Gradd driver, I get HI-res, Hi-color,
Hi-refresh rate control, but Seamless sessions and Dos windows go on the
fritz..
I have been really hoping that the Scitech Display Doctor might once
and for all solve all of these problems.
I really want to get Scitech's Display Doctor working on my system so i
can pay for it, and be happy!!
But, everytime I've tried to install it, (either beta 6, 7, or 8) the
install appears to go really well, then, when I re-boot my system, ,
The config.sys runs flawlessly, even notes that the SDDxxx.x was
installed, then....RIGHT when you expect to see "first color" of real
GUI, I get:

If I remove SDD, and re-install gradd, I'm right back where I started,
BUT, IF I merely use an "F3" at the system recovery choices screen, and
then re-install Gradd, without un-installing SDD, the system boots
normally, and the "config.sys process even claims to have loaded
SDDHELP.SYS, and the system starts out at the 256 colors you would
expect. Why SDDHELP.sys loads this way with no problem, I havent the
slightest clue, but this way the operations
are strictly"gradd" anyway, none of the scitech tools will work (they
cause the exact same trap in fact) ,but that's neither here nor there,
just a curiousity, I've since uninstalled all SDD componetry, until a
working solution can be had.
Un fortunately, the recent interaction between Scitech and IBM has had
the predictable offshoot, Now Scitech states that they "have no time" to
address specific requests for help in employing their product, and that
their news groups are for receiving "bug reports" only, and tech
guidance in resolving use related problems cannot be provided, even
"on-line" ( sounds real familiar, doesn't it?)
My system:
Cyrix 686 p166, 128 meg EDO RAM, OS/2 warp v4 with fixxpak 10
installed, Adaptec 2940UW, Hauppauge Win-Cast PCI capture card, ATI 3D
Pro Turbo Pc2TV 8 meg video adapter.
Also EMX 9c, Xfree86, StarOffice v5.1, WatchCat, and trying out PC/2,
and VFat32
(these seem to all work great, i just list them, because they seem to
be magnets for complaints about obscure System maladys)
History: Bought the ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV 3 yrs ago. ATI never could
fix the problem where the OEM driver will not install if all 8 meg of
video RAM are installed, So begrudgingly I removed the 4 meg expansion
module from the video card, and all was "ok"except Refresh rates were
horribly slow. No problems with "seamless" until fixxpak 8,9, and 10,
and /or whenever I attempted to use a Gradd driver.
Thought / Rank speculation:
trap 0006 problems are usually equated to Memory problems. Could it be
that this trap is due to the 4 meg video card expansion module being in
place? Gradd v .80 installs fine with or without the 4 meg expansion
module in place.

Subj: Video card suggestion
From: dbongo@ibm.net
I'm looking into getting a new computer and wanted to get some
suggestions for a video card.
I'm currently running a Cyrix 6x86 P166+, 32MB RAM, with a Diamond Stealth.
(I think. I know it's a Diamond.) I'm currently thinking of PIII 500 with
128MB RAM
for the next system. I figure I can keep that below $1500, and (hopefully)
get
at least 3 years out of it.
Anyways, I don't need an $800 video card. I'd like something reasonably
cheap, decently fast, and compatible with OS/2 (duh) Windows (doubt that'll
be a problem) and Linux. (Heck, even with BeOS, if possible. While I use
OS/2
99% (or more) of the time, I want the flexibility to install and use other
OSes if
I ever decide to do it.)
I also need a sound card (same price/compatability criteria as above), so any
suggestions or a pointer to the correct newsgroup would be appeciated.
Finally, which system vendor would you suggest? (I don't want to be bothered
assembling the system myself if I can avoid it.)
Any other suggestions would be helpful as well.
Thanks a lot.

- Video card. I'd pick Matrox anyday. The G100 and G200 are still
available and are very cheap. Supported under Linux and BeOS too I think.
The G100 is running < $100 CDN over here. S3 cards are also good, cheap
and well supported.
- Sound card. Geez, if you're not picky about quality, and want a cheap,
compatible card, grab yourself a Soundblaster 16. Otherwise, may I
recommend any Crystal/Cirrus chip cards? i.e. AOpen AW320, AOpen AW37 Pro,
etc. I picked one up for $38CDN. Drivers are from Cirrus, NOT Acer/AOPEN.
=> System vendor? Personally I'd pick a local store and install the
software myself. But I think Indelible-Blue ships very compatible systems
too.

Hi.
It seems, that the only option for you is to install the ibmgradd80
driver and use the virge option:
setup virge
,as S3Trio3D belongs to the s3 virge series. Read the readme file in the
gradd80.exe package (self-extracting zip file). First reset your system
to VGA.
After installation select your monitor on the second page of system
notebook and then on the first page your resolution, colour depth and
refresh frequency.
