IIRC and it's been awhile I think it was advisable to remove W3 first.
As to the "why" of it, I don't remember perhaps somebody else does
here.

Subj: USR PCI 56k Fax/Modem - How?
From: jcmcgar@net.earthlink (Chuck McGarigle)
In an article I found at dejanews several persons indicated success in
getting the USR PCI card (model 5610) working in OS/2 v4. I installed
the card this morning, but I can't seem to get it to work or be
recognized in OS/2. Has anyone had success in setting up the card? PnP
is enabled in BIOS, but the modem doesn't appear to be recognized. Any
suggestions would be appreciated since I need the only ISA slot for my
sound card.

Perhaps the original poster meant that it was simply difficult to find
the way to the fix packs on the IBM sites - I constantly tell people
how fast and reliable downloads are from their sites.
the ftp site for the latest US english fixpack is:

The fix packs (at least some of the later ones) have been uploaded to
HOBBES (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/). Get, and install both Fix Pack12 and
the Device driver fix pack1. You will also need the CSF 1.41 package
(which may be included in the ZIP files, I haven't looked at what has
been uploaded to HOBBES).
I think that saying the IBM website "sucks" is a little bit of
exageration. It is not all that easy to navigate, unless you
understand what you are looking at, but it is complete, and it is a
good place to find things like fix packs.
Hope this helps...

You must use the Custom Install process, for starters, and there is a
place where you need to tell it not to format the drive (It has been a
long time, so I don't remember the details).
Personally, if I were to do it again, I would format the drive, and
start all over again, just to get rid of a lot of leftover baggage
that tends to collect over time. You do need to backup all of your
data, so that it can be restored to the proper places, after you
reinstall all of your software.
Hope this helps...

I think it would be easier to get yourself a PCI sound card. There are
many Crystal chip cards out there and they are far cheaper than getting a
PCI non-winmodem.
Failing that, _if_ you can still return the USR, www.actiontec.com ?
Has a bunch of PCI modems with OS/2 "officially" supported.

When I first installed Warp4 several years ago it was done over the
existing Warp3 installation. This was an extended HPFS partition, G:.
At first I thought that this had worked well. An icon on the desktop
contained all of the Warp3 desktop. This seemed pretty cool. However
after using the system for a few days it acted somewhat flaky, don't
remember exactly how, probably strange hangs. So I finally wiped out
the installation and reformatted and reinstalled. This was on a 486
with 12 Mb RAM. Warp4 was significantly more resource hungry and I
ended up adding 4Mb. That system is still being used by our son.
YMMV

I remember reading about a bug in HPFS in the stock version of warp

I am sure that someone will have that url handy.
When you copy the new version of the hpfs.dll to the floppy, you must
also put "SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1" in the config.sys that is on "Disk
1".
While your at it, updating the install disks, you might as well get
the updated IDE device drivers to handle Hard drives larger than 8.4
gig. This could also be part of the problem why Warp 4 won't
recognize the partition.
I was not able to install or create partitions on the drive until
these new IDE drivers were used.

I agree. Many sites are crossed linked, and many links are not found a few
weeks ago.
Many sites want a OS/2 non-compatible Java responce.

often have NO HITS.

I used to run PRM 3.0 through the Igate proxy server that I ran on an
OS/2 Warp connect box. Once it was set up I had no problems.
What Proxy Server are you trying to connect through?
As I recall in the PRM setting for mail server you enter the proxy server's
name; for userid you enter "YourUserID@MailServer"; for password your password
for your mail server. At least that is how it worked for Igate.

I did following the release of Warp 4.
I was running Warp 3 with Windows (Blue spline box) and installed
Warp4 over it without any difficulty.
If I was installing Warp 4 over Warp 3 without Windows (Red spline
box) but had a previous install of Windows on my system I think I
would backup what I needed in Windows and delete it.
Warp 4 will install a more integrated Windows 3.1 environment on your
HD.

I didn't "upgrade", so much as I migrated from Warp
3 to Warp 4 on my all-HPFS system. I had each set
up in its own partition, capable of running any OS/2
or WinOS2 application (which resided on yet another
partition, with my data files). I took my time in
getting accustomed enough with Warp 4 before
removing Warp 3 (and its Windows directory.) So, if
you've got the disk space to do it, you might
consider this (gentler) approach.

Sounds like this might be of interest to me....but
I'm not clear on what advantage running a mail
client trhough a proxy server may be. (I've been
researching Junkbusters, so am I correct to surmise
that a proxy server setup for e-mail may enable more
robust screening of incoming stuff?)

Subj: Re: PostRoad Mailer through Proxy Server
From: tvoltagg@home.com
I only do this so that both my peer machines can access my cable modem
(at the same time). One peer machine has the cable modem and the other
is connected in a peer network.

I ran osdelete.exe, this got rid of warp3 without touching data or other
program files. Then installed warp 4.
I had a few hang ups, so I backed up data I did not want to loose, and
installed warp 4 using selective install and let it reformat the
partition. I the re installed all of the programs and utilities. Its
been good to me ever since.

Subj: Slow Connection
From: luistino <luistino@my-deja.com>
Its like watching grass grow!
I connect at 49.333 v.42bis, but my downloads are at 1.0k/sec. I am
using a pentuin 120 with 32 meb. warp 4 fp 12, NS4.61 GA, Injoy 2.3.
Modem is an IBM PCI internal 56k V90 protocol. My ISP is
Bellatlantic.net
Injoy reports avrage rates of a round 2000 and maximums of 8000. Using
IBM's other dialers does not result in faster access
When using native WIN 3.11 I connect at the same rate and get really
fast responses. Bell Atlantic's Shiva Dialer reports rates in the high
20,000 low 30s, and I have seen 45 or 49000 at times.
All polite suggestions gratefully received

It may be a modem problem even though it is the same modem for both op
sys. Can you disable v.42 and see if this will help. It did for me when
I first logged on with a USR(3Com) clone which was enabled for both x2 and
v.90.
Then you may find that your BA version of the dialer is specific for one
of the two protocols and your OS2 dialer is not. In my case, leaving the
modem enabled for v.42 as well as both x2 and v.90 caused it to lose
carrier in a couple of ten seconds. I was advised to disable v.42 and
this made my connects more secure. Then I discovered that IBM (or BA) net
servers gave up very quickly on resolving which connection, (v.90 or x2)
to make and quickly fell back to 28.8. I fixed this by disabling v.90,
since this network is native to x2 and likes it better. Ever since I
connect at 53300 and 54600 consistently.
There should be information in your modem docs for the s register commands
to try. --
