From: "Charlie Miller" <cmiller@io.com>
I have been hired by a company that has 163 OS/2 Warp 3 systems
scattered around Texas and they want me to install a network card
and to provide a TCP/IP stack in each machine so they can access the
Internet via an ISDN router. I have just about enough experience
with OS/2 to be dangerous but as best as I can tell I need to buy
copies of the Warp Connect CDROM to add networking to these older
machines.
I have been unable to find the Warp Connect CD either locally or
even on the Internet. Has the Warp Connect product for Warp 3 been
discontinued? Anyone know where I can find it? Upgrading to Warp 4
is not currently considered a workable plan since the application
running on the machines is not compatible with Warp 4 and the
company has no plans to make the upgrade. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Warp 3 (inlcuding Connect) has been discontinued from sale for some
time, and recently been discontinued from service too. You might find
the odd copy on an auction site such as eBay, however finding 163 of
them might be difficult.
Why is the application incompatible with Warp 4? It's quite difficult to
achieve that. I'd suggest you get hold of one copy of Warp 4, get it up
to fixpak 12 and device driver pack 1, try the offending application and
if it works, you're a genius and worth every penny of the big bucks
they're paying you(!). If it doesn't work, post the errors in
comp.os.os2.bugs and see if anyone can help you sort it out.
Graham.

Finding a copy of the Warp Connect CD won't be difficult: just search
www.ebay.com for 'Warp Connect' and you'll find copies for less than
$10. However, getting a legal licence for all 163 machines may be a
little trickier.
You can certainly consider Warp Connect as discontinued: even the
newer Fixpacks (from FP41 and higher) won't install on Warp Connect.
Mind you, it's a really fine product (I'm still happily using it).

B.cmd 1.0
---------
What version of OS/2 is this for?
---------------------------------
This script will run on ANY OS/2 system. However, it is intended for Warp
3.0
Blue Spine. The reason for the Blue Spine requirement is that there are
updates
made to winos2 that MAY or MAY NOT work correctly on the Red Spine
distribution
and REAL windows 3.1.
Now, if you have a Warp 3.0 Red Spine installation and you DON'T use
WinOS2,
then you can go ahead and use this without problems...
What it does:
-------------
This rexx script patches the OS/2 system files syslevel.os2 and
syslevel.mpm to
allow the application of FixPaks greater than #40. These two files are
located
at: \OS2\INSTALL\SYSLEVEL.OS2 and \MMOS2\INSTALL\SYSLEVEL.MPM. These are
the
ONLY two files that this script touches and before it does, backups of the
originals are made to: \OS2\INSTALL\SYSLEVEL.OS2.BACKUP and
\MMOS2\INSTALL\SYSLEVEL.MPM.BACKUP
How it does it:
---------------
By patching these two files, the CSF installer is fooled into thinking that
the
target system is a LanServer 4.0 installation.
Should I use this rexx script?
------------------------------
Use TOTALLY on your on decision. I don't support this is ANY WAY, SHAPE or
MANNER than a very big, smiley... GOOD LUCK, BUB!
How often do I need to run this thing...
----------------------------------------
Only once! Just before applying any of the fixpaks greater than #40. For
the
totally stupid... this means fixpak #41 or higher...
How do I do it?
---------------
Run this script from the command line, with the argument "COOL", on your
OS/2
BOOT hard drive. If no errors pop up, then it worked!
The actual command looks like: B cool
*/
'@echo off'
parse arg stuff .

No idea about servers, but Netscape 4.04 and above support restart, and
so does WGET. Netscape requires that the disk cache be big enough to
contain the entire file for this to work (and this also presumes you're
not suffering the infamous premature download termination in Netscape).
I started using WGET having been driven bonkers by a combination of NS
4.04's premature download terminations and lockups when you moved the
mouse over the "Saving Location" window! I still use WGET although the
first problem has been partially fixed in 4.61 and the latter problem
completely fixed in both 4.04 and 4.61.
Graham.

Just bear in mind that this is probably a violation of the license
applicable to the later (post 40) fixpaks.

From: tvoltagg@home.com
I use Internet Gate as my proxy server in my 2 computer peer system. I notice
that there is constant disk activity on the "server" machine (The one hooked
up
to a cable modem). It is a low level clicking that occurs every 5 seconds
or so. If I close Internet Gate, the activity stops. Of course I can't
connect
on any of my client machines if I do. Does anyone have an idea of how I can
stop this?

You do not need to install a new or different OS. All that
you need to do on each machine install is the 'OS/2 Requestor"
from Lan Server, or Warp Server. After those are installed,
then you could update the stack with MPTS 8424 and the OS with
FP_40. This will bring you up to current support levels, with
no licensing or support problems. Note that all these
installations are CID capable, which is probably what you want
to do.

If you are looking for a compact solution:
My get108.zip includes get.exe which has an append function.
It will pick up where a previous download left off.

Subj: Re: Warp 4 as Print Server for Linux
To: jallen@cts.com
From: John Mandeville <nospam@nospam.com>
1. I don't have your exact printer. I have a Stylus Color 800 (not the
same as a Stylus 800 -- I have no idea why Epson chose confusing
names). I the Ghostscript output filter stcolor works for it. I
suspect that what you (and Printtool>) calls input filters are just
Ghostscript output filters. So if Printtol has an stcolor filter, see
if that helps. If you don't see an stcolor filter, see (6) below.
2. You might also try the Uniprint filter. See
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/aladdin/doc/Defices.htm#Uniprint
for more information. There is a link to a German site for more recent
parameter files that may or may not help -- the link was non-operative
as I wrote this, but their server may have been down. If you don't see
a uniprint filter, see (6) below.
3. You might ask Epson what Ghostscript filter works for your printer.
You may not get a helpful response. If you tell Epson you use OS/2, you
are even less likely to get a helpful response. They may or may not
stoop to consider Linux a real operating system.
4. I don't print through Samba. Instead, I run an lpd daemon on the
OS/2 box. You can go to OS/2's TCP/IP configuration notebook, go to the
Autostart page, and autostart lpd as a detached session. I use the -b
parameter to suppress banners. You would then configure Linux to use a
remote lpd printer. It took me several tries to get it working, but I
don't remember the details. However, my best guess is that your problem
is the print filter and so that you will run into the same problems
using either method.
5. If possible, you might try to move your printer to the Linux server
as a test. I did note in your post that you don't want to leave it
there. I suspect you will run into the same problems. At least that
would tell you that the problem is not in the Linux-OS/2 communication.
6. The Ghostscript in RedHat (and, because of licensing issues,
presumably any other Linux) distribution is the GNU version which is
always one public release version behind the Aladdin version. So you
may need to update your Linux Ghostscript. Try going to the Ghostscript
web site an get the latest Aladdin version. (If I remember correctly,
this is legal only if you are using it for non-comercial purposes.) I
believe the latest is version 5.50. A precompiled rpm file is
available. Actually, before downloading, you might check that the
latest on the web site really is more recent than the one on RedHat. At
any rate, the Ghostscript web site is http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/
Unfortunately, it has been a bit over a year since the last Ghostscript
release. If you are willing to compile your own (yikes), you might try
one of the test (double yikes) versions.
7. Have you gotten the OS/2 version of Ghostscript to give you
successful output? If so, you should be albe to get the Linux one to do
so by using the same Ghostscript output filter (assuming an up-to-date
Linux version). If you can't get successful OS/2 Ghostscript output,
Linux output will probably fail for the same reason, namely no driver
for your printer. There is one exception. OS/2 Ghostscript has several
OS/2 specific devices that may or may not work. These are os2pm,
os2dll, and os2prn. I don't remember if I've tried them. You won't get
them to work in Linux.
8. If you can get the OS/2 Ghostscript to work for you but not the
Linux Ghostscript, then an awkward but perhaps usable solution is to use
Printmon so that you can use the OS/2 Ghostscript. Printmon is an OS/2
printer port redirector. From the Ghostcript site above, look for
Redmon (the Windows implementation of the idea). From that page, there
is a link to Printmon information.
9. Good luck in getting things to work.

Did you update the DOS TCPIP? Can't remember what the file is but that

I use a similar batch file at work, I call it nt_net.cmd
It reads like this:
net start peer
logon os2pcname /p:password /d:domain
net use m: \\ntpcname\ntdirectory1
net use n: \\ntpcname\ntdirectory2
exit
The "net start peer" command should automatically start the
lan requester if it is not already started. Good luck.

The Warp 3 clients are no longer *supported*. That means 'use it at your
own risk if you can' and not 'you are not allowed to use it'. I'm quite
sure that IBM knows about the possibility to patch the SYSLEVEL files.

Did I say you can no longer USE Warp 3? All I said was that this is
*probably* a violation of the license. I didn't say it *is* a violation,
and I didn't even actually say you shouldn't do it if it were. Try

I'd been /hoping/ that you'd return here sometime, since I did some
"detective work" after our earlier discussions. Basically, it looks to
me as if IBM have goofed and /have/ indeed left the fix for this APAR out
of later versions of the fixpack.
According to my research, the problem was reported in APAR IC15963 (see
<URL:http://app-01.www.ibm.com/support/support_doc/ncs/s0012/
body/44338.shtml> on 06/06/1997. Using "Locate Fixpack" on that page
turns up the aforementioned IP08401 fixpack, and looking at the list of
APARs fixed by it, IC15963 is included: this is presumably why there are
news articles archived at Deja telling people to apply that fixpack for
the SYS0234 problem, and why people in this thread (earlier) saying that
it worked for them.
However, IP08401 is NOT available from IBM's ftp server; there is
IP08402, IP08412, and something in between (IP08406, IIRC). Now if one
looks at the detail of what each fixpack includes, a strange anomaly is
revealed. Whereas the fixpacks for all other products (well, all those
that I've ever had cause to investigate to this level of detail) include
a list of /New/ APARs fixed and of /All/ APARs fixed, with the latter
correctly showing a cumulative history of APARs, those for the IP084xx
series seem to each include *only* the /New/ fixes.
If you go into the fixpack database, by product, you'll find that each of
the IP084xx range includes fixes for ONLY the APARs that are newly fixed
in that release (well, that's what the database says), whereas for other
products, the /All/ APARs section includes not only the /New/ ones but
also all those that were there before.
So it really appears to me that the division responsible for Peer has
worked differently from other divisions of IBM, but that those who
actually *release* the fixpacks have assumed that each is cumulative.
This is probably why IP08402/6/12 doesn't work for thee or me, whereas it
has 'worked' for others (like {R}) who had, presumably, applied IP08401
originally and then followed it up with those later fixpacks.
It is probably NOT insignificant that using "Locate Fixpack" returns
detail of IP08401 /only/; if you try it for APARs relating to other
products, you find a list of /each/ of the fixpacks that have addressed
the particular APAR.
Having followed the link from the aforequoted URL to the "Locate
Fixpack", the description of IP08401 includes a link to download it:
however, this points to the FTP site which, as I've already remarked,
does NOT have that fixpack there any more :-(
There is another APAR in the database that mentions the SYS0234 error:
this one is IC17587, and covers the case of the *alias* data exceeding
the 4k buffer (IC15963 deals with the system resources exceeding 4kB).
(See <URL:http://app-01.www.ibm.com/support/support_doc/ncs/s0007/
body/37928.shtml> --- don't IBM have nice intuitive URLs!!?)
This later report was logged on 25/03/1998, and like 15963 claims to have
been fixed. However, following the "Locate Fixpack" link tells us that
there is NO fixpack for the APAR!! (I'm guessing here, but might the
fixpack in which it /was/ addressed withdrawn, and hence removed from the
database?)
It looks to me that IBM have right royally fucked up on this issue: is
there anyone out there with the ear of PSP (e.g. someone with a
maintenance contract) who can "persuade" then to rerelease the IP series
of fixpacks with ALL the APARs fixed in a cumulative fashion, as with
other products?
I'd like to see this done and released before we all have to start PAYING
for fixpacks from 01/01/2000 --- in case you didn't spot this in the
Software Alert newsletter, fixes will only come to those who have a
Software Choices subscription after that date.

Here's some generic info that might help you:
For OS/2 Warp v3:
Here are the procedures to get Netscape (for Win) and other Win 16-bit
net
clients working in a WinOS/2 session.
1) In your autoexec.bat file, make sure there is a line that says: SET
ETC=C:\TCPIP\DOS\ETC
2) In autoexec.bat file path statement, the line C:\TCPIP\DOS\BIN is
first
3) Make sure there is NO other copy of WINSOCK.DLL in \WINDOWS or
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM . If there are, move them or delete them.
4) in your TCPIP\DOS\ETC directory there is a file called
'resolv' that has the same info as in
\TCPIP\ETC\RESOLV
5) In CONFIG.SYS there are lines stating:
DEVICE=C:\TCPIP\BIN\VDOSTCP.VDD
DEVICE=C:\TCPIP\BIN\VDOSTCP.SYS
RUN=C:\TCPIP\BIN\VDOSCTL.EXE
6) In the session settings for the Windows app, under
DOS DEVICES, you should see c:\tcpip\bin\vdostcp.sys
7) WINSOCK.DLL MUST reside in your x\TCPIP\DOS\ETC directory. This MUST
be the version that is supplied with OS/2.
If you are running Warp 3.0 (any version) you need a new WINSOCK.DLL file
that was written specifically for Netscape 3.0 support in WinOS2. It's
available from:
http://www.cincyteamos2.org/masterupdate.html
Download IC14468.EXE and run it. It's a self extracting file that will
give you a new WINSOCK.DLL and a new VDOSTCP.VDD file, as well as
instructions for installing them.
For OS/2 Warp v4:
1) Follow steps 1, 2, and 3 listed above.
2)in your MPTN\ETC directory there is a file called
'resolv' that has the same info as in
\TCPIP\DOS\ETC\RESOLV
3) Follow steps 5, 6, and 7 listed above.

get the following error:

No, the name of the folder is vol2 -- there is no problem with it from the
OS/2 command line.
Another folder, which I can see, is called InstallLinux. :-\
The only other one is called RECYCLER and has the HIDDEN and SYSTEM
attributes set, so I can't see that one from most places (just FM/2).

It is? Not according to the "detail" of the fixpack reached from the
APAR database. It lists IP08402 as having fixed the following /new/
APARS: IC16787, IC18903, IC18905, IC18962: the list of /all/ APARs
included in the fixpack is the same four APARs only :-(
Contrast this by looking at the detail of, say FP11 for Warp, where all
earlier APARs (saving those backed-out) are listed as well as the new
ones.
Of course, it /may/ be that the documentation is wrong for this series:
how are you so sure that the fix for IC15963 *is* included?
Which fixpack includes the fix for APAR IC17587, which (in the databse)
claims to have been fixed in a fixpack, and yet no fixpack exists that
claims to include IC17587.

From: "Rich Klumpp" <kmr@tencara.moc>
Today at work I tried to configure Warp as a client to the NT DHCP server and
it timed out trying to find the server during the reboot. I found a dhcp fix
from 1/98 and replaced the 3 files within but still the same results. Is
there some anti-os/2 crap in NT that could be causing this ( I'm not paranoid
but I play one on TV), or am I not getting to the right fixes? The box is
running Warp 4 with no fixpaks applied. 3Com 905B is the NIC. Is there any
one out there successfully getting an IP assignment from an NT server?

You can provoke this one by having a route statement in your TCP-IP
setup folder which heads to a place thjat the computer can't go during
the boot run. Simply add back a route that went to a domain server for
a DHCP determined server, then don't let the box see the cable or the
server during the boot run. I think you'll see this error.
If you look closely, you may see that you can clear out the trash in the
route definitions in the manually directed routes in the TCP-IP folder.
when they clear the false target; the error dissapears.
I've frequently produced this setting up boxes using cable modems. Then
when I get the box away from the cable modem .. poof error!

Well, I downloaded the readme and inf files of IP08402 to check
whether this APAR was included. If I haven't mismatched the APAR
numbers, IC15963 was included. But that was a couple of weeks
ago. Maybe I'm fooled by my memory....

Yes, with Warp 4 Fixpak 6, no special TCP/IP upgrades,I was able to obtain
an IP address from an NT server. I think you need to have NetBIOS over
TCP/IP installed on the Warp client.

I have seen this error message before and I'm pretty sure it occurs
when a *.CMD file is executed. You should have a CALL ...MPTSTART.CMD
(or something to that effect) in your CONFIG.SYS. Look at the *.CMD
file (or the file it invokes, in my case SETUP.CMD) and post the
content (should be only 5 lines or so). Although I'm not a TCP/IP
expert either, I feel your problem has something to do with the
IFCONFIG and/or ROUTE statements. Difficult to tell, unless we know
what you have there.

Netbios has nothing to do with DHCP. TCP/IP is all that is required.

No .. these are in the TCPIP setup sub folder in the OS2 folder. There
are involved in setting up your TCPIP requirements in that folder.
The actual ROUTE files are in the files in your TCPIP directory. There
are in both the OS2 and DOS side of the operation. They, together with
what I think is involved in the SETUP.CMD operation, have to be all
clean and syncronized. Somehow, if they are not and an address gets
requested that cannot be found during SETUP.CMD, seem to cause this..
I don't claim to be an OS/2 expert. I've muddled through to this point
on the basis of what has been offered here and reading...

Netscape 2.02 has the guts of Netscape 3 with the package of 2. If
you include -3 in the parameters section of the properties, it will
tell websites that it's version 3 and they will be happy

When I was running Igate I used to see this same activity. The only way I
could
get rid
of it was to shut down Igate and then delete all the cache files, I cann't
remember
their names right now, but they are easy to spot. Once that was done I
restarted
Igate and all
was fine for a while. I cann't remember how long it would take for the disk
thrashing to
start again, but rest assured that it will continue to happen.
I got totally fed up with Igate. It would sometimes crash just after
starting,
sometimes it
would crash if I started NR/2 on my other OS/2 machine. I just fould it
totally
unstable on a
Warp Connect Protectonly=yes fp38 box. I replaced it with the Injoy Firewall
product
and
am a much happier camper.

Hi..... I followed the suggestion in section 1.1 of the READ.ME and

though I do NOT have the fixpak. ... chuck pettus
P.S. OS/2 4.61 appears slower than W98 4.61. I am
trying some experiments, not really knowledgeable
about what I am doing. I 've achieved noticeable
faster performance. I believe that OS/2 involves
more resources with lans and other commercial
options that slow down its speed with 4.61. Windows 98
probably is designed for the SOHO users and maybe
optimized for those users. Just my guess. I also use,
perhaps, an old dialer package that came with Warp4.
IBM has a new OS/2 dialer but it appears to be designed
only for the IBM ISP. I have not found a way to get it to
work with my non-IBM ISP

Warp includes a SLIPPM.EXE, which will let you dial to other ISP's
(though not to those who use MS-CHAP for authentication). There are
also third-party solutions, like InJoy. See

Hmmm ... don't know what problems you have at that site <g> but I believe that
if you even might have problems with the FTP-parts then there is a mimick copy
of the official IBM fixpacks at Hobbes (I think). However En_US only I
believe.

Subj: Warp 3 to Warp 4 Upgrade HPFS Problem
From: "Charlie Miller" <cmiller@io.com>
I attempted to upgrade an older Warp 3 system yesterday to Warp 4
and the upgrade installer said it could not allocate 175 megs of
space on drive C: for the upgrade. Drive C: is a Warp 3 HPFS
formatted drive and shows 700+ megs available.
Repeated attempts to install Warp 4 all quit at that same point.
Warp 4 installer wants to reformat the drive and says that I must
save my user data and re-install it later. Re-installing all the
apps, device drivers, and data files will be a major pain.
Is it true that Warp 4 can't read the HPFS used on Warp 3?
Another possibility -- the C: drive is actually a RAID1 drive on a
BusLogic BT-410A, IDE controller. Could that be messing things up?
I have no problems with it under Warp 3 or when using the bootable
utility disks built by Warp 3.
I didn't build the original system so I don't have a clue as to
what's going on here!
Question #2 -- the customer has a backup Zip disk with a *.CMP file.
Anyone know what utility may have created that file?
Charlie Miller

Subj: OS/2 and g.lite ?
From: Mark Schlegel <moschleg@erols.com>
g.lite is a very new ADSL that should be cheaper than
cable modem (a bit slower but you don't have to use
the proprietary cable box from your cable company
since g.lite is a standard) and the telco doesn't
have to run a new set of wires if you have a existing
phone pair (not sure if the pair has to be dedicated for
that use or if plain phone line can be used
(for example, will the g.lite connection work
if it was a phone line and I was talking on it at the
time?). In some cases a microfilter needs to go
between the g.lite terminal box and the incoming
line.
What is the news on using this with os/2?

Subj: Re: Warp 3 to Warp 4 Upgrade HPFS Problem
From: Graham Norris <graham_norris@candle.com>
There's no difference in HPFS between Warp 3 and Warp 4, however on
either system changes have been made in support of larger drives.
If the Warp 3 system has an IDE drive larger than 2G it has had
maintenance applied to allow it to address them. Warp 4 will need the
same before it is installed. Visit the Device Driver Pak Online to get
the latest IDE driver package and follow the instructions there for
creating an updated install disk.
The Device Driver CD which comes with Warp 4 links you to the online
version of the device driver repository.
If there is a special driver for this RAID controller, it will need
adding to the install disk in much the same way.
Graham.
