Subj: GIMP, XFree86, GhostScript HELP PLEASE.
From: rappleby@cadvision.com (Ray Appleby)
I am trying to open a .EPS file in GIMP. After getting
XFree86/XWindows/GIMP setup, the first try said that it couldn't find
gs.exe (ghostscript) so I installed ghostscript for X11 from Hobbes.
Didn't work. I have been advised that ghostscript 5.5 for OS/2 will
work under XWindows but I'm not convinced of that since the
executables have different names (I need it to work in conjuction
(seamlessly) with GIMP which wants to call gs.exe to interpret the
encapsulated postscript file.)
I can't find any info on how to properly set up ghostscript under
XFree86/XWindows.
If anyone has done this could you please post the procedure or
location and name of a readme file which contains detailed info about
this specific procedure.
I don't just want to run ghostscript, I want it to work in conjuction
with GIMP under XWindows.
Thanks.
Best Regards,

Subj: Installing FIX-pack
From: "Mackan" <Mackan@SpamMeNot.se>
Hello there
I was trying to install the fixpack (fixpack 11 for os/2 warp 4.) , not
using diskettes or the web.
There was a way described in a readme-fil that followed the FIX141-disk.
And that I instead used a program called SVdisk, that faked a DISK-drive, to
make it possible
to unpack the disketts to the local harddrive.
Then when I'm trying to run SERVICE it will not update the system, I get the
following error
"Error opening ir creating logfile" in the "Corrective Service Facility
Message".
I have made the SET's that are necessary, but I'll not work anyway.
The instructions that I've been testing are included in the readme file is
as follows :
--------------------------------------
First, setup a directory to hold the FixTool code. For example,
run the following to place the FixTool into the d:\csf directory.
| cs_141.exe d:\csf
Next, setup the FixPak directory using the diskette images.
loaddskf xr_w035.1dk j: /f/y/q
xcopy j: d:\xr_w035\ /h/o/t/s/e/r/v
loaddskf xr_w035.2dk j: /f/y/q
xcopy j: d:\xr_w035\ /h/o/t/s/e/r/v
...
...
... <repeat for each disk image in the FixPak>
Install the FixPak by running service.exe.
set csfutilpath=d:\csf
set csfcdromdir=d:\xr_w035
d:
cd csf
service (or start service)
---------------------------------------
End Readme-file.
Any suggestions how to succseed in applying a fixpack is very helpful.
I have applyed the FIXpack 7 on this computer, but that was a year ago, and
I did use disketts then, but I hade disketts,
so I wanna figure this out, so I don't have to use the disks.
Why havn't IBM figured out an easy way to upgrade OS/2.
any suggestions or tips please mail them to

Ghostscript isn't a GUI program, and as such will "work under X
windows"!
GhostView is a GUI front-end to gs.exe and an OS/2 Presentation
Manager version is available - this won't work under X.
I imagine (but don't know) that the OS/2 X version is also a
front end for gs.exe.

Another way is to use fastkick, wich includes a utility that
enables you to decompress the dsk-files without having to use a
virtual floppy. Also it has got an extended SERVICE that enables
you to install the fixpack directly from the harddrive, it
replaces the fixtool!
Search for fastkick141.zip on hobbes, for the latest version!
But ofcause you still have to delete the log-files before
applying the FP!

Ghostscript is an interpreter for the PostScript page description
language used by
laser printers. GSview is a graphical interface for Ghostscript that
runs on Windows, OS/2 and X11. Info on how to obtain and configure
GSView and Ghostscript under OS/2 (and other platforms) is available at:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/index.html
All of the files and information that you need are available here but
you will have to download and read some READ.ME files to get some of the
info.

Everyone has their own preference, mine is to use QF11. I have found it
simple to use and based on my experience, I cannot recommend it enough.
It checks your downloded *.?dk files, one by one, for errors and
reports the them if found. It prompts you with easy to follow
instructions on installing a fixpak and then gets on with it. Here is an
exerpt from the read me file
"The critical issue is safety.
The main difference between this utility and most others in the genre is
that
QuickFix uses an image unpacking tool which performs CRC validation of
the
diskette images before applying what could otherwise be junk to your
finely-
tuned and previously functional OS/2 system. To me that seems a
worthwhile
contribution."
I cannot remember where I downloaded from, probaly hoobes, look for

Subj: Various Warp 4 problems.
From: Mike DeSanto <desantom@io.com>
I recently had to re-install Warp 4. I had a full backup, so this was
not much of a problem. However, I wanted to install the newest Netscape
(4.61, I think). I also use the Java version of ICQ and AIM. That
required Fix Pack 5. I downloaded the CSF disk, the update disks, the
Feature Install package and the latest Java Development Kit.
I install the fix pack. Next bootup, the system crashes. It says
something about ES1868$. I boot with disks and find a line similar to
DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\ESS1868DD.SYS /N:ES1868$. I rem out that line and the
next, which also uses the ES1868$. OS/2 now boots, but my sound card
does not work. I try re-installing the card, no luck.
I say 'OK, I can live without sound'. I try to install the JDK. It
asks me what country, then shuts down everything except Netscape
(including the desktop) and hangs.
Does anyone have any idea how I can 1) get my sound back! and 2) get
the bloody JDK installed. I want my Java back!
Thanks in advance

Easier would be to get the *.ZIP version then. I've used SVDisk in the
past when I *didn't* want to unpack it to my harddisk: the whole process
can run from the virtual floppy.
Mackan> Why havn't IBM figured out an easy way to upgrade OS/2.
But they have: it's called RSU.

I suggest just deleting the MMOS2 directory completely, rebooting, and
then doing a selective reinstall of the multimedia. Make sure you have
the right drivers and are doing the install properly. Get the sound
working properly. THEN...apply Fixpack 12 with Fixtool v1.41 to update
the multimedia install. (Note: If you have already applied fixpack 12,
the Fixtool will only apply the service to the multimedia files.
Otherwise, it will update everything.) After this is done, uninstall
Netscape Communicator and then reinstall it. Then install Feature
Install. Then install Java 1.1.8 and you should be good to go.
