IBM OS/2 WARP FAMILY OF PRODUCTS
An IBM White Paper, dated October 24, '94. Modified for receipt by e-mail
*************************************************************************
INTRODUCTION SOLVING REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS
*************************************************************************
Over the years, millions of people have found that Operating System/2*
(OS/2)* makes a difference in their lives, whether they are pursuing a
hobby, or running a home office, a medium-sized business or a worldwide
enterprise.
OS/2 is making a difference in the lives of health care workers and their
patients. It is making a difference in the quality of service a
restaurant gives its customers. And, it is making a difference to space
exploration.
One example involves the small staff of administrators in nursing homes.
They have more work than they can handle with record keeping, phone calls
and requests for patient data. Trying to use a computer system that
makes them wait for one application to finish before they can access
patient records in another program is not productive.
OS/2 with software for the health care industry enables them to handle
the workload because they can access patient records in multiple
applications-admissions, medical, and billing-at the same time they are
printing reports.
In another example, major buildings, such as the Sears Tower and the
TransAmerica Insurance World Headquarters, have control systems that
used to be confined to a single supplier because of proprietary
communication protocols. OS/2 enables various kinds of systems to be
integrated into a more flexible one to control critical building
functions, such as security, fire alarm, comfort control and access
control.
The leading application that provides building-control functions uses the
communication capabilities of OS/2 to run easily across industry-standard
local area network (LAN) systems, such as OS/2 LAN Server** and Novell
NetWare**. The application also uses OS/2's Dynamic Data Exchange
feature to transfer information about a building to a separate program
for graphing and printing automatically.
IBM specialists who build software solutions recognize that today's
customers need strong communication tools and fast systems that don't
require them to wait. To be highly productive, people need to have the
same tools every place they use a computer-at home, at work and on the
go. Most of all, people require software to be so easy to learn and
use that it becomes transparent to the task at hand.
OS/2 has been providing solutions for customer problems for so many
years, through five major releases, that it has become the world's most
popular 32-bit operating system for IBM and IBM-compatible PCs. OS/2 is
a stable, proven system that solves customers' real-world problems.
The cover story in PC/Computing in December 1993 recommended readers try
OS.2 2.1 and "not sit around waiting for the next-generation
system. It's here now and it works great....It is, in short, everything
you'd want an operating system to be."
IBM has continued to improve OS/2's performance and make it more usable
to fill the needs of home as well as business users. These improvements
plus the stability and power of OS/2 culminate in the new OS/2 Warp,
Version 3, an operating system that utilizes the full power of your
computer.
OS/2 Warp offers 32-bit, high performance and runs efficiently in systems
with as little as 4MB of memory, while also taking full advantage of
systems with greater resources. An early level of OS/2 Warp captured
the BYTE magazine Best of Show award at the COMDEX* Spring 1994 computer
trade show.
+++++++++++++OS/2 WARP FAMILY PACKAGED FOR CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE++++++++++
IBM delivers a family of OS/2 products flexible enough to meet the needs
of different users and based primarily on OS/2 Warp.
These products are:
------------------------------OS/2 Warp----------------------------------
Designed for home users and business people on the go, OS/2 Warp
delivers the stability, performance and productivity of a 32-bit
multi-tasking environment. It enables users to run OS/2, DOS and
DOS/Windows** applications concurrently. Packaged with the BonusPak
product, OS/2 Warp is a complete desktop and mobile solution providing a
minisuite of productivity programs and online communication facilities.
----------------------OS/2 WARP-BASED LAN CLIENT-------------------------
A LAN client based on OS/2 Warp, available in 1995, will have all the
advantages of OS/2 Warp and will provide the programs you need to
communicate and share resources with co-workers on a LAN. It will
provide the client support for LAN Server and NetWare networks. The
LAN client also will connect mobile users anywhere in the world to their
office LAN with LAN Distance** Remote. Administration tools will be
included so you can monitor the performance of your network. OS/2 Warp's
LAN client also will be packaged with the BonusPak product.
-------------------------IBM OS/2 LAN SERVER 4.0-------------------------
LAN Server is an application that exploits the power of OS/2 on server
systems. Used today with OS/2, LAN Server provides a complete server
solution for businesses of all sizes and will complement OS/2 Warp's LAN
client. The graphical user interface with the easy drag-and-drop
technique from Workplace Shell* is so intuitive you don't need special
skills to be a network administrator. The streamlined installation
process asks only a few simple questions and provides automatic adapter
card detection. LAN Server has the flexibility to support many types
of clients, both IBM and non-IBM.
-----------------OS/2 FOR SYMMETRICAL MULTIPROCESSING (SMP)--------------
OS/2 for Symmetrical Multiprocessing has the power to run compute
intensive environments requiring as many as 16 multiprocessors. OS/2 for
SMP builds on the strength of the award-winning OS/2 Version 2.11 to
provide a stable, dependable environment for mission-critical
applications. It boosts the performance of your existing multithreaded
applications. Because OS/2 for SMP complies with industry standards, it
can take advantage of a variety of hardware systems.
For the future, IBM is developing the OS/2 Warp family of products
on the PowerPC** microprocessor. OS/2 Warp products running on the
PowerPC will make your applications portable to the faster, more
powerful RISC-based personal computers.
The following describes the benefits that the OS/2 Warp products bring to
customers. The discussion includes both the products available today and
the plans for the future. "A Quick Look at the OS/2 Warp Family" gives
a summary of the special features of each product.
*************************************************************************
OS/2 PROVIDES MORE CHOICES AND FLEXIBILITY
*************************************************************************
IBM built OS/2 to span a wide range of computer systems. OS/2 runs
efficiently in systems with as little as 4MB of memory like your laptop
computer. OS/2 also has the power to make full use of a symmetrical
multiprocessing server in a large network in an enterprise. And OS/2 runs
the systems in between.
This enables you to use the same application programs on your mobile
computer as you use on your desktop system in the office. It gives
you the flexibility to add new systems to your business and use the
same software on all of them.
IBM plans to enable future software products to span an even greater
range of computer systems and make your applications portable
across all of them. IBM is using a set of innovative technologies,
called IBM Workplace, to make our systems portable, interoperable and
scalable. These technologies use open standards supported by key
industry vendors to ensure that the products you invest in today will
work with new technologies you adopt in the future.
This was one reason that Quincy's Family Steakhouse restaurant chains
chose OS/2 to run its point-of-sale systems. "We needed a platform
that would allow us to add different applications as our business grows,
and a system that would allow us to use industry standard components,"
said Tommy Holt, vice president of information systems at Flagstar
Companies, Inc., which owns the restaurant chain.
Quincy's uses OS/2 and LAN Server to run 3 or 4 registers per store
connected to a personal computer in the manager's office. LAN Server
also enables each store to send data to the host system at headquarters.
Another requirement was ease of use. "We need a system which
would provide for a quick, effective training program that would
shorten the time it takes to get our new team members over the learning
curve." Holt said. Above all else, Quincy's wanted to meet their
business need of serving customers better. Holt said, "Our new
system is helping us accomplish just that."
++++++++++++++OS/2 WARP RUNS YOUR APPLICATIONS-AT THE SAME TIME++++++++++
OS/2 Warp enables you to run programs for OS/2, DOS and DOS/Windows on
the same desktop. Because OS/2 Warp is a high-performance system, you
will experience a step up in performance and usability with your DOS
and Windows applications. There is an OS/2 Warp package to suit the
needs of Windows users, whether they have Windows already installed
or not.
You can run multiple OS/2, DOS and Windows application programs at
the same time. Your computer can send a fax across the country and
download a file from the Internet at the same time you are writing a
report. OS/2 Warp is the "brain" that directs these multiple tasks so
you can get more work done-without waiting.
The Broward County courthouse in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida began using
OS/2 because they wanted a graphical desktop application that would
be fast and efficient for judicial assistants accessing databases.
"The DOS-based Windows applications we were using just wouldn't work for
us. We were losing too much time in having to shut down one application
to go to another," said Eric Libow, network administrator for
Judicial Information Systems for Broward County. Libow said their
judicial assistants really like the speed and accuracy of the new
system.
The courthouse has expanded its use of OS/2 to a juror tracking system to
handle more than 4,800 jurors called in a typical week.
Next they plan to speed up the legal process by giving judges
access to information databases from their desktops, whether they
are on the bench, in their chambers or at home.
OS/2 Warp is designed to run each program in its own protected space so
that a problem with one program will not affect the others, making your
system less likely to crash. A stable system lets you be productive
without interruption. And you have the confidence that your programs
and data are secure.
++++++++++++++++++OS/2 WARP PROTECTS YOUR INVESTMENTS++++++++++++++++++++
OS/2 Warp helps protect the investments you have made in software and
hardware, and the skills of users of those products. You can run DOS and
Windows applications alongside your OS/2 applications. And OS/2 Warp
exploits the high performance of 32-bit personal computers with Intel
microprocessors. This gives you numerous choices of IBM and
IBM-compatible PCs.
In the future, as OS/2 Warp continues to make full use of these systems,
it will also become available on systems with the PowerPC microprocessor.
OS/2 Warp will enable you to run your current software on these
RISC-based systems.
The PowerPC is the first desktop computer chip with so much power that
abundant computing cycles will be available to support extensive
human-centered interaction in OS/2 Warp software. IBM software products
already use speech recognition, multimedia, and pen and touch technolgies
to adapt the computer to more natural human interaction. With the
PowerPC, it will become more practical to extend the use of these
technologies in software so that the computer becomes an even more
useful tool.
*************************************************************************
USE OS/2 WARP AT HOME AND ON THE ROAD
*************************************************************************
At home if you use your computer for finances, games and writing letters,
and you would like to get much more out of your PC, OS/2 Warp delivers
what you need.
The Workplace Shell user interface makes OS/2 Warp easy and quick to
install. It has visual appeal and a natural design that make it simple,
elegant and fun to use. The Workplace Shell is a graphical desktop with
familiar objects that reflect the way a person works
in the real world. There are 3-D icons representing objects like file
folders, printers and shredders. To print a message, for example, you
would just drag the icon of a Lotus cc:Mail in-box message to the
printer object.
Mike St. Clair uses OS/2 at home to do genealogy research. "I've
found family members because of the computer," he said. Mike has
found relatives he didn't know he had, across the United States and in
Scotland, Wales and Holland.
Mike communicates with others interested in genealogy research
by exchanging information over online bulletin board systems. His main
reason for choosing OS/2 was to save time by doing many tasks at once.
"I can download from the network, print a genealogy report, and
write letters at the same time." He corresponds with new-found
relatives and government agencies. The computer helps St. Clair keep
better records of family names, places, births, marriages and deaths.
St. Clair tested the early version of OS/2 Warp. Although he is not
a novice user, he believes that beginners can "absolutely"
benefit from OS/2 Warp. "It's the simplest piece of software I've
seen," he said.
For home education and entertainment, OS/2 Warp's built-in multimedia
capability lets you do things like run movies. Movie clips are widely
available; some are included on the OS/2 Warp CD and more can be
downloaded frm online services like CompuServe*.
OS/2 Warp also has built-in support for Kodak's Photo CD** to let you
store and view high-resolution colour images and photographs developed on
Kodak Photo CDs. For example, you might take your child's birthday
snapshots on a Kodak Photo CD and send them electronically to the
grandparents across the country by way of the Internet.
OS/2 Warp provides a new level of high-performance game play not
available to you in the DOS or Windows environment. To make game
setup easier, OS/2 Warp automatically chooses the proper setting for more
than 100 of the best-selling DOS, Windows and OS/2 games. Several new
OS/2-specific games, designed to make use of the advanced capabilites of
the 32-bit operating system, are being developed. They include Sim City*
Classic for OS/2, Sim City 2000 for OS/2, Galactic Civilizations** and
DOOM** for OS/2.
++++++++++++++++++OS/2 WARP ADVANTAGES FOR MOBILE USERS++++++++++++++++++
For the mobile computer with as little as 4MB of system memory, OS/2 Warp
provides great performance. And it includes a Plug-and-Play capability
that enables you to install PCMCIA** cards without having to reconfigure
or reboot your laptop.
While other operating systems make you keep a to-do list of documents
you want to print or fax when you get back to the office, OS/2 Warp keeps
the to-do list for you. Just use the printer object on the desktop to
hold your print requests until later. Back at the office, where your
system is plugged into a printer, your print jobs are waiting for you,
numbered and ready to go.
With OS/2 Warp your laptop will last longer without a recharge. Its
Advanced Power Management helps extend battery life by setting your
portable on idle to conserve power and then bringing it to life whenever
you need to use it.
OS/2 Warp used with IBM LAN Distance Remote enables you to access the LAN
back at the office from your mobile computer.
++++++++++++++++++COLLECT A BONUS WHEN YOU BUY OS/2 WARP*****************
Here's another way that OS/2 Warp makes it easier to do more with your
computer. When you buy OS/2 Warp or OS/2 Warp's LAN client, it includes
a separate BonusPak of software. The BonusPak for OS/2 Warp provides a
minisuite of full-function productivity programs and software for
connecting to and navigating the Internet. Person to Person** adds
real-time conferencing. And FaxWorks** provides a simpler, faster way to
fax from the computer.
The IBM Works applications can help you be more productive and organized.
You can use the word processor for correspondence or school reports, the
database for household records, and the Personal Information Manager for
your to-do list, appointments and phone book.
These applications work in concert on the OS/2 Warp desktop. To send a
letter to a business associate, you just drag a business card from the
address book onto the folder containing your letter. You don't need to
start up the word processor. Then just drop the folder onto the fax
object. The fax number is read automatically from the business card, and
the document is sent to your associate. Such smooth integration is
possible because these applications make full use of OS/2 Warp's 32-bit
multitasking capabilites and the Workplace Shell.
+++++++++++++++YOUR ON-RAMP TO THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY++++++++++++++
The BonusPak has a complete set of tools for connecting to and navigating
the Internet. In fact, OS/2 Warp is the first PC operating system to
deliver complete access to the Internet.
The Internet has been out of reach for many people because the software
configurations can be complex and the search for appropriate connection
services can be difficult. OS/2 Warp has simplified the process of
entering the information super-highway and has made it affordable.
Intuitive menu-driven tools also have been created, such as
IBM Gopher and IBM Internet Connection Home Page. The IBM Internet
Connection is an insider's guide to the best places to visit on your
tour of the Internet.
You can use IBM's Internet access tools to send mail, explore databases
and retrieve files that interest you, such as pictures of spacecraft and
popular guitar music. You can shop from home, make travel plans and
converse with interest groups.
++++++++++++++++++++WORK TOGETHER WITHOUT BEING TOGETHER+++++++++++++++++
The BonusPak also includes the IBM Person to Person** for OS/2 (P2P**)
software that lets people work together on the same document from remote
PCs over standard telephone lines or the office network. You can use P2P
to confer with as many as eight people from your PC. You can place data,
files and graphics into the shared chalkboard. Each participant can
view your information simultanelously and write or draw their comments.
For example, engineers at Diametric in England design tools for
manufacturers such as Black & Decker and Ford. They conduct
collaberative engineering sessions with their customers by using OS/2 and
P2P. Diametric exchanges computer generated models with customers over
high-speed phone lines. They even conduct video conferencing sessions by
adding video cameras and ActionMedia* II adapter cards to PCs. By sharing
visual information, they can resolve complex engineering problems quickly
and accurately, enabling products to get to market faster.
Another example is the Royal Children's Hospital in Australia that links
children to their classrooms using P2P to display live video with text
and graphics. The children can keep up with school work, and their
classmates can see what goes on in a hospital.
The BonusPak also provides a new multimedia technology tools. Video IN
for OS/2, with supported adapter cards, enables you to use a video
recorder to capture videos from a camcorder or other device and include
them in presentations. This can help educators create a wide range of
programs and CD-ROM titles that use multimedia as a teaching tool. You
can even create "best of" home videos. Multimedia Viewer is also
included to enable users to present multimedia objects and files with
high quality images, audio, animation and digital video contents.
*************************************************************************
GAIN ACCESS TO COLLEAGUES AND INFORMATION
*************************************************************************
Client/Server computing for businesses of all sizes is provided today by
OS/2 and OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 and will be enhanced with an upcoming client
package based on OS/2 Warp.
+++++++++++++++++IBM PROVIDES CLIENT/SERVER FOUNDATION+++++++++++++++++++
Corporate customers and value-added resellers who set up client/server
networks today become, by neccessity, the integrators of the basic
foundation of their systems. They must buy the basic pieces
individually, test that they will work together smoothly and obtain
service for each part separately.
As a result, customers are not making the best use of their valuable
time, the costs are higher than need be, and the quality of the resulting
system is not as good as it could be.
To resolve this problem, IBM is packaging products for customer
convenience. IBM will offer OS/2 Warp's LAN client package in 1995 as
a complete client solution. IBM assembles the pieces you need-including
the operating system, transports, and requesters-performs the integration
testing and coordinates service. You can save time and money by buying
the LAN client package rather than purchasing and installing these or
similar products separately.
+++++++++++++++++++++++OS/2 WARP-BASED LAN CLIENT++++++++++++++++++++++++
The LAN client package seamlessly will link users to collegues and the
information resources of their organization, whether users are in the
office or on the road. OS/2 Warp's LAN client will provide local and
remote network access in one package with an easy installation.
The LAN client will enable you to share resources across the network
using OS/2 LAN Server Requester and NetWare Client for OS/2. You will be
able to access a local or remote IBM LAN Server or Novell NetWare
network, and use Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
capability for multivendor environments.
You will be able to monitor the resources on the LAN using the System
Performance Monitor/2. This tool helps you to keep your network running
smoothly and efficiently.
LAN Distance Remote will be included to connect the mobile user or
telecommuter anywhere in the world to the LAN at the office over
public telephone lines. With LAN Distance Remote on your
computer and LAN Distance Connection Server on your server, you can
access information and resources, such as printers and applications,
anywhere on the LAN. You can run your current client software with
the same familiar user interface as your regular desktop.
Brokers in the Noordstar insurance company, Belgium, submit insurance
contracts by using LAN Distance Remote to connect to their host
system. Each broker uses the connection several times a day from their
PC running OS/2 to access the LAN at the home office. Noordstar required
a secure, high-performance connection to their mainframe application.
LAN Distance Remote was the only product that fulfilled these
requirements. The value to Noordstar is a good, inexpensive solution
that attracts and holds onto the best brokers in the business.
The LAN client will be shipped with the separate BonusPak that provides
easy access to the Internet and to various online services. The BonusPak
also includes IBM Person to Person (P2P) software. See "Collect a bonus
when you buy OS/2 Warp" for examples of P2P and Internet use.
You also can access the Internet through the LAN with TCP/IP for OS/2,
which will be included in the LAN client. IBM's Internet access tools,
such as the IBM Gopher, IBM WebExplorer**, File Transfer Protocol (FTP),
Telnet and NewsReader, are available for your use through the IBM
Global Network or other service providers.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++OS/2 LAN SERVER 4.0+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The debut of LAN Server 4.0 in September 1994 earned accolades from
customers, press and industry consultants for enhanced ease of use
combined with proven reliabilty, stability and performance. In fact
LAN Server 4.0 was awarded Best of Show for network software at the
NetWorld + Interop '94 conference in September 1994.
Whether your LAN is large or small, OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 combined with
OS/2 Warp provides a reliable, high-performance client/server
environment. Choose OS/2 LAN Server Entry for networks
of as many as 80 users or OS/2 LAN Server Advanced for mission-critical
environments of as many as 1,000 users per server. Whichever you choose,
you will benefit from the intuitive Workplace Shell interface which
makes network management as simple as drag and drop.
Nicholas Petreley, who tested an early level of LAN Server 4.0 for
InfoWorld magazine, wrote. "The new tools are so easy to master,
in fact, that I was able to install OS/2 2.11 and LAN Server, configure
modems, printers, applications and disk resources, and also make them
available to various groups and users, all in a leisurely afternoon."
(August 22, 1994)
Upgrading from Entry to Advanced is an easy load and go. In the same
way both Entry and Advanced are completely upgradable from previous
versions. In addition, customers can easily expand networks with
LAN Server by adding servers or clients incrementally. OS/2 with
LAN server supports a complete range of clients: OS/2, DOS,
DOS/Windows, and Macintosh*.
Because LAN Server support can be extended to other IBM operating
systems, you can access from your desktop computer resources that reside
across a
wide range of platforms, from PCs to mainframes. LAN Server versions are
available for AIX*, OS/400*, VM and MVS. LAN Server interoperates with
other LANs, making migrations, consolidations and coexistence easier.
IBM has developed tools to greatly simplify the process of migration
from NetWare or Microsoft LAN Manager to LAN Server 4.0. These tools
are available through bulletin board services and from IBM.
According to Ken Mackin, independent consultant and president of
Product Logic Corporation, "IBM LAN Server 4.0 represents a
fundamental shift in IBM LAN System's strategy. The product redefines
the IBM customer to include any company that needs a network operating
system."
Mackin also said, "The new product's innovative graphical user
interface, easy installation, high performance and reasonable hardware
requirements make LAN Server 4.0 available for offices of all types,
sizes and budgets. Frankly, I'm highly impressed."
IBM plans to extend LAN Server in the future by offering open, industry-
standard, distributed computing services, such as global directory and
security, as defined in IBM's Open Blueprint for distributed computing.
*************************************************************************
OS/2 WARP'S ADVANTAGES FOR PROGRAMMERS
*************************************************************************
Developers will find OS/2 Warp to be the ideal development environment
with its open industry standards, object-oriented technology and a
single API set across platforms.
++++++++++++++++OS/2'S COMMON BASE SPANS HARDWARE PLATFORMS++++++++++++++
IBM continues its commitment to provide one consistent API set for
software developers. OS/2 uses a common code base to deliver one API set
and user interface across its family of products.
Even when Windows 95 1.0 arrives, Microsoft will require corporate users
to write mission-critical applications using one API set for the client
and another for the server. Microsoft has at least four sets of APIs:
Win16, Win32s, Win32 (NT only), and Win32c (Windows 95 only). Despite
some common functions, there are significant, distinct differences among
four API sets. The API calls, for instance, for the forthcoming
Windows 95 1.0 user interface are not yet supported in Windows NT 3.5
Workstation.
Having many API sets causes confusion and increases developers' costs
because tasks such as development, version control, maintenance and
packaging become more complex. This extra workload is unneccesary-
OS/2 delivers the same functionality with one API set and a single user
interface across all platforms from laptop to multi-processing server.
And, in the future, OS/2 Warp will extend its reach from Intel to PowerPC
systems. This simplifies the programmer's task of making use of new
technology and protects the investments that customers have made in
their current applications.
++++++++++++++++++TASK-CENTERED COMPUTING STARTS WITH SOM++++++++++++++++
Object technology is the key to enabling users to make the transition
from application-oriented to task-centered computing. Huge,
feature-laden applications are time-consuming to update. They are giving
way to smaller, more nimble, component-based applications. Object
technology will enable programmers and users to pick and choose specific
functions they need from reusable application building blocks. They
will have the flexibility to develop better solutions more quickly so
they can respond to business changes and become more competitive.
IBM is committed to standards-based object technology through its
System Object Model** (SOM). SOM is an object packaging
technology that ensures objects are portable across platforms and
development languages.
A variety of tools are being built on SOM. One example is the C Set++**
compilier that produces SOM objects automatically. Another is
ViusalAge, a visual builder for applications that are developed from
parts and components. Developers can build object-oriented
applications by using the SOMobjects** Developers Toolkit for OS/2, AIX
and DOS/Windows or by using SOM-enabled development toolkits from other
industry leaders.
In the future, Taligent, Inc., a joint venture among IBM, Apple and
Hewlett-Packard, will be the source of many object frameworks for
OS/2 Warp.
IBM is implementing SOM across its operating systems: OS/2, AIX,
OS/400 and MVS. Other leading vendors also are implementing SOM in
their systems, including participants in Component Integration
Laboratories, a non-profit association of key vendors who support
OpenDoc**.
+++++++OPENDOC TRANSFORMS TODAY'S APPLICATIONS INTO REUSABLE PARTS+++++++
OpenDoc is a standard, component architecture that will transform
today's applications into reuseable software parts that can be customized
ad assembled by users into applications and compound documents.
Athena Design, inc., will soon ship a native OS/2 Warp version of its
award-winning spreadsheet, Mesa** 2, that will take advantage of SOM,
OpenDoc, multithreading and Workplace Shell. Mesa 2's spreadsheet and
graphics objects will be packaged as SOM objects so they are available
for use in other applications.
David Pollak, president of Athena Design, views OpenDoc as an excellent
distribution and marketing tool for Mesa 2. "By shipping our object
library, we're delivering more than a traditional spreadsheet," Pollak
said. "We're also delivering a tool that can be easily integrated
into mission-critical custom applications."
Users will be able to incorporate Mesa's OpenDoc parts into compound
documents. For example, real-time data from a financial service
bureau could be fed into a spreadsheet that is embedded into a live
report for continual, up-to-the-minute market analysis.
OpenDoc encourages business solutions across various platforms and
networks, rather than promoting a single platform. It supports many
operating systems, including OS/2, Windows, System 7, Taligent*, and
several varieties of UNIX*, including AIX. Embracing OpenDoc will
ensure portability across multiple operating environments and
hardware platforms.
The capabilities of OpenDoc should not be confused with Object Linking
and Embedding (OLE), Microsoft's method for data sharing. OLE is a
Windows-oriented technology designed primarily for communication
between existing applications. By comparison, OpenDoc is designed to
transform applications into smaller, reusable software parts that can be
combined easily into integrated compound documents. OpenDoc is a
superset of OLE and will interoperate seamlessly with OLE applications.
++++++++++++++++OS/2 WARP DELIVERS POWER AND PERFORMANCE+++++++++++++++++
Developers place heavy demands on the operating system. Their tools
demand a high amount of resources, and OS/2 Warp makes better use of
the computing resources they have through its memory management,
pre-emptive multitasking and multithreading.
Developers at NASA are using OS/2 to power an experimental robot.
Although not as cute as R2D2, NASA's "SodaPup" robot could become just
as famous someday. SodaPup wanders around the office at the Johnson
Space Center, interacts with humans, and picks up and delivers
packages. These tasks involve path planning, computer vision, voice
recognition, natural language understanding and reactive control. They
are the complex tasks necessary to build an astronaut helper and
planetary rover/explorer.
NASA chose OS/2 because it is designed to handle many different things
at the same time-much like the human brain. Several applications must
run simultaneously, keeping SodaPub alert to whatever it encounters,
yet determined to perform its assigned task. In addition, OS/2's
multithreading capabilities permit each application to handle
several internal operations at the same time.
OS/2's memory management is especially critical to SodaPup's video
processor, which often needs to handle several large images at once.
+++++++++++++++OS/2 FOR SMP BOOSTS APPLICATION PERFORMANCE+++++++++++++++
Certain applications need even greater processing power, such as
applications for forecasting, modeling, simulation and computer-aided
design. OS/2 for SMP provides the performance capabilities they
require.
This OS/2 product supports as many as 16 Intel processors in a single
personal computer. Your exisitng OS/2, DOS and DOS/Windows applications
can take advantage of performance increases as processors are added.
OS/2 for SMP also is suited to a multiuser environment that may have
many applications on the SMP server. It is the most powerful
multiprocessing, multitasking solution you can buy today for Intel
PCs.
