SourceSafe in the Press
** Is SourceSafe Easy To Use? **
Computer Language says that "SourceSafe is quick, accomplishes the job, and can
be incorporated without disruption. Therefore, it meets my favorite criteria
of adding needed control without hampering basic productivity." PC Magazine
agrees, describing SourceSafe as "both highly workable and useful." Microsoft
Systems Journal adds that "The manual reads well; it's informative without
being dry," and sums up by saying that SourceSafe finally answers the question
"Who says a programming utility can't be usable too?"
** What Does SourceSafe Mean to Windows Programmers? **
PC Magazine feels that "The Windows SourceSafe program rounds out the set of
tools needed to do software project development entirely with native Windows-
based tools." Windows Sources calls SourceSafe "A Windows version control
system that is worth a close look," and Computer Language notes that "the
support for native Windows is a definite draw." Microsoft Systems Journal, in
a review comparing SourceSafe with six other version control systems, greeted
SourceSafe with "Aha! Finally a Windows-based system."
** But What About Other Platforms? **
PC Magazine likes the fact that "Since the DOS and Windows SourceSafe programs
operate very much like one another, it's not confusing to switch back and
forth." And Computer Language, noting that "one <SourceSafe> database on a
UNIX host can support Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX versions of the same (or
different) project," says that "the cross-platform compatibility and project
orientation are definite pluses for me."
** Is Project Oriented Version Control Really So Important? **
Windows Sources says that "The most impressive thing about this product is its
handling of multiple relationships of individual product elements. Object-
oriented programmers, read on! If ten projects use a certain object, then all
ten contain internal linkage identifying their relationship with the project,
requiring that only one copy of the object be stored." Computer Language feels
that specifically "The project orientation of SourceSafe really shines when
managing a complex project with many files checked out."
** Summing Up: Is SourceSafe Really a Useful, Powerful Tool? **
Windows Sources calls SourceSafe "a convenient and reliable way to eliminate at
least one of the concerns of multiple programmers on a project." Computer
Language awarded SourceSafe its prestigious Productivity Award, saying that
"SourceSafe's ease of use belies its power; it does a truly fine job of keeping
track of the revision history of your development projects. SourceSafe is
software that performs an important task in a very simple, clean manner." And
in a review comparing SourceSafe with 6 other version control systems
(INTERSOLV PVCS 5.02, TransWare Enterprises Source_Manager, MKS RCS 5.2, Burton
Systems TLIB 5.0, MicroQuill Curran's Bench, and Softool CCC/Manager),
Microsoft Systems Journal concludes that "My favorite was SourceSafe. It's
easier to use than the others, it's designed around a clever project oriented
design, it's the only graphical shell that deserves a 'good' rating, and it
does what you want it to."
