NEW ITSC REDBOOKS
AND OTHER ITSC PUBLICATIONS INFORMATION
June 30, 1993
International Technical Support Center
Department H52, Building 930
Poughkeepsie, New York 12602
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Abstract
Newly published "redbooks" that are now available and a reminder about
AS/400 GBOF codes and upcoming new AS/400 redbooks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
New AS/400 Redbooks Available Soon ...
In April 1993, your AS/400 customers received a letter explaining the
new delivery and charging structure relating to AS/400 redbooks. Also
included was a survey on AS/400 publications on CD-ROM as well as an
enclosure explaining the new GBOF structure and subscription process.
Previously, all AS/400 redbooks were automatically shipped using
GBOF-0424. In an attempt to eliminate the waste of unwanted
publications which occurs with a general GBOF, all subscriptions to
the old GBOF-0424 were deleted on June 9, 1993. Also, four new
distinct AS/400 GBOF categories which group AS/400 redbooks by a
particular subject area were created. The new GBOF numbers are as
follows:
o GBOF-5222: AS/400 Systems, Application Development, and
Performance
o GBOF-5223: AS/400 PC Support
o GBOF-5224: AS/400 Office and Advanced Technology
o GBOF-5225: AS/400 Communications and Systems Management
You and your customers need to subscribe to the new GBOF numbers if
you want to continue automatically receiving AS/400 redbooks. If you
or your customers do not want to receive duplicate,
previously-received AS/400 redbooks, you must request to ship updates
only when subscribing to a GBOF which means that a "2" must be
specified for the Initial Library field when the subscription is
created. Please note that AS/400 redbooks that become available
between June 9, 1993 and the date the subscription is created are part
of the initial library; therefore, you and your customers should
subscribe early or order the AS/400 redbooks separately that will be
available in the next several weeks. They are as follows:
o GG24-4028-00: IBM AS/400 Printing III
o GG24-4030-00: Performance Benchmarking for the AS/400
o GG24-4027-00: AS/400 Client Series Products and Positioning
o GG24-4050-00: Current-OV/400 Workgroup Program
o GG24-4039-00: AS/400 and RISC System/6000 Connectivity
PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR CUSTOMERS TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE NEW GBOF NUMBERS
FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS:
o Notification and shipment of new AS/400 redbooks is automatically
done as they become available.
o A subset of publications which relate more to the specific
functions of interest can be received.
There is also a new offering that was orderable as of May 21 --
AS/400 redbooks on CD-ROM. The first edition has more than fifty
redbooks. This cost-effective, efficient, and easy-to-use technology
improves your access to AS/400 redbooks as well as to the AS/400
system manuals. The use of this softcopy form of the AS/400 redbooks
has many advantages including allowing you to reduce the time of
information retrieval through the use of topical and keyword searches
on-line.
To simplify ordering AS/400 redbooks on CD-ROM, feature code 8053 has
been established. If you add this feature code to your customers'
OS/400 customer record, they will receive SK2T-8053, the AS/400
redbook Softcopy Library, including the updates during Version 2 for
$495.00 (US $). Direct orders and SLSS for SK2T-8053 are also
availabl e for a single copy fee. Normal publications ordering
procedures apply for SK2T-8053 and the previously mentioned GBOFs.
Over one hundred of the surveys sent with the original letter have
been returned and nearly sixty percent of the respondents plan to
order the AS/400 redbook CD-ROM. Over half currently use AS/400
publications on CD-ROM and over ninety percent were aware that the
system manuals are available on CD-ROM. Nearly a quarter indicated
that they would be interested in softcopy publications on tape. We
have heard the need fo r this type of offering and will be considering
it in the future.
Thank you for supporting AS/400 redbooks. We would appreciate your
continued support of both hardcopy and softcopy redbooks. Please
encourage your customers to subscribe to AS/400 redbooks using the new
GBOF numbers or by ordering the CD-ROM.
If you have questions, please contact Karla Arndt at RCHAS1(KKA).
