INFORMATION ON THE IBM BACKUP SOFTWARE - PMTAPE 8/17/93
Official Name: IBM Internal Tape Backup Program
IBM Part No.: 92F3343
Description: PMTape is a PM based program for backing up OS/2 disks
onto Irwin/Conner Accutrak 250 tape drives. This is the
tape drive that IBM also sells under its own label.
PMTape originated as EZTape developed by Irwin but IBM
now maintains its own version of the program. Most notable
of the differences between the two is that PMTape has a
stand-alone program that allows you to restore an entire disk
from just two boot floppies plus a third program disk.
PMTape provides compression for data and also allows fast
restore of files whether they are compressed or not. There
are many options to running PMTape including an autostart
facility and the ability to start it from a command line.
'Procedure files' can be written to provide all the options
necessary in a command-structure file.
Current Version: 2.01 (a few additional fixes are available on the IBM
BBS)
How to obtain:
Any dealer of IBM software. Sears, Entre, Inacomp, etc.
Mail Order:
The Corner Store; 1-800-I-BUY-OS2, (203)-567-3463,
Fax-(203)-567-3394, or Compuserve 76367,2721
Indelible Blue, Inc; 1-800-776-8284, (919)834-7005,
FAX (919) 783-8380 or Compuserve 70670,2352
Don't try calling the IBM sales number as they don't seem to know
what it is and if they do, they won't sell you a copy. (go figure)
Price: $85-95
Tape Drives Supported: The Irwin/Conner Accutrak 250 tape drive. Price of
these drive is in the neighborhood of $229 but
CompUSA has them on sale from time to time for $149.
The Accutrak 250 normally runs off the floppy disk
controller but Irwin does make a 4100 controller
board. Although this board is not specifically
supported, some people have been successful in
getting it to work with PMTape. The board provides
faster throughput rates.
PMTape Tech Support: 704-594-3721
Tapes required: Uses the DC2120 tape in Rhomat format. About $16-19.
Buying unformatted tapes:
PMTape will format tapes in about 2 hours on a fast machine. Tapes must
be bulk erased using a bulk eraser prior to formatting regardless of
whether they were purchased as unformatted or being reused. Eraser
suggested by Irwin is the Radio Shack Model 44-232 for $19.95.
Price differential over formatted tapes is about $6/tape.
