CONNECT THE WORLD UPDATE #8
July 8, 1996
Dear Merlin volunteers,
Well I'm back from my vacation, rested, and finally caught up
on my e-mail. Sorry for any delays in responding to some of
your questions, but I think I'm back up to speed.
As mentioned in the last update, the date for the "Connect the
World with Merlin" (CtWwM) event is scheduled for Saturday,
October 26, 1996. Please consult the Script (Part I) for details
(see below).
PROJECT STATUS
1. VOLUNTEERS
The number of volunteers keeps growing. As of this writing, we
now have approximately 550 volunteers from 37 countries
(welcome Lithuania).
Again, I'm attaching the latest e-mail & telephone lists.
Please review them carefully and e-mail me any changes or
corrections to the lists.

3. CALL FOR COUNTRY COORDINATORS
As mentioned in the last update, we now have Country Coordinators
in the following regions:
Francois van der Merwe - Cape Town, South Africa
(za2mhnwg@ibmmail.com)
Terry Kemp - Dandenong, Victoria, Australia (will also
coordinate New Zealand); (terry@emerald.cns.net.au)
Joelle Nebbe - Bleiken, Switzerland (jnebbe@ibm.net)
These people help coordinate demonstration activities for their
parts of the world. If you are from these parts of the world,
please do not hesitate to contact your Country Coordinator.
HOWEVER, as this project blossoms in size, we are now soliciting
Country Coordinators for the following areas:
BRAZIL, GERMANY, NETHERLANDS, TAIWAN, UNITED KINGDOM, SCANDINAVIA,
and the provinces of CANADA, particularly BRITISH COLUMBIA, ONTARIO,
and QUEBEC.
Other regional areas are, of course, also welcome.
Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding volunteering
your services.
4. SCRIPT - PART I
I am again including Part I of the Script (SCRIPT1.INF) in the
attached zipped file (MERL0708.ZIP). This is for those who didn't
receive it last time.
The script is implemented using the standard OS/2 INF format.
Part I includes guidelines for: Selecting a Site for the demo;
Hardware Requirements; Personnel Requirements; a brief overview of
Merlin; and the Project Scope for this event.
To execute the script, simply use the standard OS/2 "View" utility
(VIEW.EXE); for example:
C:\VIEW SCRIPT1.INF
Part II will include the actual script for the presentation itself
(in terms of how to conduct the actual demonstration). Part II of
the script will be delivered in a couple of months after we have had
a chance to practice with Merlin in some depth.
5. SITE REGISTRATION FORMS
As mentioned in Script 1, please remember the Site Registration forms
are due AUGUST 31, 1996. The Site Forms can be obtained from
the Script.
If you haven't done so already, now is the time to make contact with
the locations where you wish to conduct the demonstrations (e.g.,
computer stores, universities, etc.).
THERE WAS ONE OMISSION I OVERLOOKED IN SCRIPT-1 (WHICH I HAVE SINCE
CORRECTED);
ON THE REGISTRATION FORM, PLEASE INDICATE THE NATIVE LANGUAGE YOU
WILL BE CONDUCTING THE DEMONSTRATION IN (such as English, French,
German, etc.). This data will be necessary to send you a suitable
version of OS/2 to demonstrate.
6. The following is a starter kit of the Web sites to reference during
the demo;
1. Please review these addresses for accuracy and omissions;
advise me accordingly.
2. If your Web site is listed, now is the time to consider updating
the web page for others to look at.

7. "TO DO" LIST - THINGS I'M STILL WORKING ON:
A. Promotions - development of ads and promotional materials.
B. Development of the Web Site - still working with IBM to
finalize details of the Web site and the final Web page.
C. Obtain demonstration versions of 3rd party OS/2 software
products for distribution.
D. Develop Part II of the Script.
E. Plan and assemble the demonstration kit.
8. AVAILABILITY OF MERL0708.ZIP
Based on the responses received from the last update, I will
be uploading the MERL0708.ZIP file to:
MBA's BBS (the "PRIDE" Network) at:
+01-813/786-4864
And, due to requests from volunteers, we will now upload the
updates to the Hobbes FTP site:
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu
Look for it one of the following directories:
/incoming (temporary)
/os2/info
NOTE: CtWwM Update files are named 'MERLmmdd.ZIP' where
"mm" represents the month and "dd" represents the day;
for example, MERL0708.ZIP represents the July 8th update.
That's all for now. I'll keep you abreast of developments
as they occur.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Stay tuned!
