-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
IBM ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF OS/2 WARP WITH WINDOWS APPLICATION SUPPORT
BUILT-IN
On February 22, 1995, IBM* announced OS/2* Warp with WIN-OS2*, an upgrade for
customers running OS/2 2.0, OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.11. OS/2 Warp with WIN-OS2,
commonly referred to as "fullpack," gives the millions of users of previous
versions of OS/2 the new OS/2 Warp operating system with integrated and
optimized Windows** 3.1 application support. The product is being released
simultaneously in more than 13 languages.
The first edition of OS/2 Warp, announced on Oct. 11, 1994, is aimed at OS/2
for Windows users or those already running DOS and Windows on their PCs. It
is designed to take advantage of Windows functionality already installed on a
system and does not come with WIN-OS2 function built-in.
New to This Release of OS/2 Warp
The WebExplorer, a native OS/2 application allowing users to navigate easily
through the Internet's Worldwide Web, is now complete and included in the
BonusPak for OS/2. Current OS/2 Warp customers can receive the finished
WebExplorer by simply clicking on the "Retrieve Software Updates" icon in the
Internet Connection for OS/2 folder. The Internet dialer, used to connect to
an Internet provider other than The IBM Global Network, now includes Point to
Point Protocol support. OS/2 Warp now supports Ontrack Disk Manager used on
Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard files greater than 528Mbs. It
includes support for Cannon Bubble Jet printers, an updated MediaVision
ProAudio Spectrum 16 driver; more IDE CD-ROM drives; additional PCMCIA
support for late model IBM ThinkPad*; support for diskette compression
technology (DMF) used by Microsoft** in their Office suite of products.
"With this release of OS/2 Warp, our existing customer base of more than
seven million can benefit from the features and functions already enjoyed by
the one million Windows users who have upgraded to OS/2 Warp," said Wally
Casey, director of marketing, IBM Personal Software Products. "Because it is
available simultaneously in 13 languages, we can quickly and measurably
increase our leadership position as the highest volume 32-bit IBM compatible
operating system vendor in the industry."
The new OS/2 Warp boasts the same usability features, slimmed-down system
requirements and BonusPak of popular applications delivered in the initial
release of OS/2 Warp last October. OS/2 Warp has the same multitasking and
Crash-Protection that made OS/2 famous, and it runs Windows and OS/2
applications in as little as 4Mbs of memory.
MARCH, 1995 -- Page 6 of 53
IBM LAN SOFTWARE NETWORK NEWS
The BonusPak, which ships with every copy of the operating system, lets OS/2
Warp users experience the advantages of native OS/2 applications. It offers
more than a dozen popular applications, including easy access to the Internet
with the IBM Internet Connection via the IBM Global Network; CompuServe**;
and IBM Works, an object-based suite of applications for word processing,
database, charting, graphics, spreadsheet and personal information
management.
Minimum hardware requirements for OS/2 Warp include a 386SX or higher
processor with 4Mbs of memory. OS/2 Warp will allow OS/2, Windows 3.1, and
DOS applications to run on the same desktop.
With OS/2 Warp, customers receive 60 days of free service by telephone. In
addition, help is available though a variety of on-line services including
Internet, TALKLink, Prodigy** and CompuServe. Support for the IBM Global
Network is available 24 hours daily, seven days a week, at 1-800-727-2222.
Pricing and Availability
OS/2 Warp will be available in the U.S. through IBM dealers, superstores and
a variety of general retail outlets by Feb. 24, 1995 in the U.S. The
products carry suggested list prices of $129 for OS/2 Warp Version 3 without
WIN-OS2 code and $199 for OS/2 Warp Version 3 with WIN-OS2 code. For OS/2
2.1 and 2.11 customers, there is an upgrade available to OS/2 Warp with
WIN-OS2 for $129. Street prices will vary.
Editors Note: WIN-OS2 is the trademarked name of the integrated and
optimized Windows 3.1 environment within OS/2 Warp with WIN-OS2.

IBM RELEASES PC DOS 7 WITH INTEGRATED STACKER 4.0 COMPRESSION
Continuing IBM Support for DOS Users
On Febuary 27, 1995, IBM announced PC DOS 7, the most advanced DOS available,
offering more memory and more disk space than any previous version.
PC DOS 7 includes integrated data compression from Stac** Electronics, the
leading provider of PC compression software; an extensive on-line help
system; and exclusive features designed for mobile users, such as file
synchronization, docking capabilities and the latest support from Phoenix**
Technologies for PCMCIA cards.
PC DOS 7 is IBM's 14th release of industry-standard DOS and was designed to
add value and power to existing DOS and DOS/Windows environments.
"We recognize that the world is shifting to 32-bit operating systems. The
success of OS/2 Warp has proven that," said Karl LaWall, PC DOS worldwide
brand manager, IBM Personal Software Products. "But the millions of DOS
installations around the world won't disappear or convert overnight, and IBM
is in a position to support and enrich this environment. PC DOS 7 is the
MARCH, 1995 -- Page 7 of 53
IBM LAN SOFTWARE NETWORK NEWS
best upgrade choice for MS-DOS** users who want to enhance their DOS and
DOS/Windows environments without taking the step to a 32-bit operating
system."
The product also provides a powerful new platform for developers of DOS and
Windows-based business applications and games, and for software companies who
still depend upon sales of their existing DOS-based applications.
"WordPerfect** for DOS, both versions 5.1+ and 6.0, are still selling quite
well," said Mark Calkins, vice president and general manager of WordPerfect,
a member of the Novell** Applications Group. "This tells us that the DOS
market is still a viable and profitable option. IBM's PC DOS 7 will extend
that by offering increased function and benefits to both DOS and DOS/Windows
users."
More Free Memory and Space
PC DOS 7 provides users with as much as 40KB more conventional memory than
DOS version 6.x. This means there's more memory available for Windows, games
and memory-hungry applications.
IBM also has integrated Stacker** 4.0 for DOS and Windows into PC DOS 7,
giving users the highest compression ratio and most disk space possible on
DOS and Windows. Stac Electronics also provides Stacker 4.0 for OS/2,
providing users with an industry-standard compression strategy across all PC
operating systems. Stacker 4.0 provides more available disk space than other
technologies, and users can easily upgrade to PC DOS 7 from MS-DOS
DoubleSpace and DriveSpace, IBM SuperStor/DS and earlier Stacker versions
without decompressing existing files.
Stacker 4.0 provides additional portability across systems with the "Stacker
Anywhere" feature, which enables the use of diskettes containing compressed
data on systems without compression software.
"IBM's decision to integrate Stac's complete DOS and Windows version of
Stacker 4.0 in PC DOS 7 will be a boon to all DOS and Windows users," said
Gary Clow, president, Stac Electronics. "The installed base of PCs running
DOS and DOS/Windows is very large, and IBM has not forgotten these users.
Stac expects to see strong demand from the release of PC DOS 7."
Tailor-Made for the Mobile Market
PC DOS 7 has been improved for mobile computing with exclusive features such
as the File Update utility, built-in PCMCIA software and docking support.
The only DOS with built-in PCMCIA support, PC DOS 7 includes the latest
PCMCIA and socket service support from Phoenix Technologies and makes PC card
setup and configuration easy with new DOS and Windows utilities.
File Update allows mobile users to keep their work files current by comparing
files on different computers and keeping them synchronized. Mobile users with
Plug and Play-enabled hardware can benefit from docking support, which may
eliminate the need to reboot when a notebook is docked.
MARCH, 1995 -- Page 8 of 53
IBM LAN SOFTWARE NETWORK NEWS
Upgrading, Pricing and Availability
PC DOS 7 upgrades any DOS version 3.3 and higher and is supported on all IBM
and IBM-compatible PCs. Customers should be able to upgrade for less than
$60. The product is now available in the United States and other countries
that sell Single Byte Character Set (SBCS) versions. Double Byte Character
Set (DBCS) versions will be available within the first half of 1995.

IBM PREPARES TO LAUNCH OS/2 WARP IN CHINA
In January, executives from IBM's Personal Software Products (PSP) Division
were in Beijing and Shanghai this week meeting with government officials,
OEMs and distributors to plan the Chinese introduction of OS/2 Warp.
Scheduled for a first quarter 1995 launch, this new release will bring full
Chinese-language capability to IBM's latest, most sophisticated version of
the OS/2 operating system.
"We are very excited about the opportunity in China. In August 1994 we
introduced OS/2 2.1P, our first Chinese-language version of the product, and
the reception has been extremely positive," said Dan Lautenbach, PSP vice
president, marketing. "IBM's goal is to establish OS/2 as the standard for
PC computing in China, and our recent agreements with local PC makers to
pre-load OS/2 on their Chinese systems put us in a great position to do
that."
OS/2 Warp, voted by The Computer Shopper as "Best Operating System of the
Year", will be available in China by the end of the first quarter. An
extensive advertising and promotion campaign is planned as part of the
launch.
Earlier this month, IBM signed an agreement with the China National Grain
Information Center involving the purchase of 3,000 units of OS/2 2.1P. Under
this agreement, OS/2 will help support a nationwide network of grain storage
and distribution centers.
OS/2 Warp began shipping in November in the United States, Europe, Latin
America, Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia, and has sold more than
800,000 copies worldwide.

First Company to Fund Applied Research in China
On December 7, 1994 IBM announced that it will establish the China Research
Laboratory in Beijing, China. Expected to be fully operational by mid-1995,
the new laboratory will support joint projects with universities and research
institutes, while exploring technology of both national and commercial
importance. The research activity at the new IBM laboratory will include
Chinese network services, Chinese input/output technology, and Chinese
language processing.
The China Research Laboratory will be staffed almost exclusively by
researchers in China, consistent with the depth and capability of the
country's rich technological community.
Dr. George W. Wang, a research director at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research
Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, has been named director of the new
laboratory. Dr. Wang was born in China, grew up in Taiwan, and earned his
doctorate in experimental physics from Columbia University in New York City.
"One of the primary goals of the new China Research Laboratory is to create
world-class computer technologies that are particularly relevant to China,"
said Dr. Wang, the new director. "The wealth of technological resource in
this country promises a strong future for applied and venture Research."
To achieve its mission, the China Research Laboratory will affiliate itself
with universities and research institutes for specific projects in China.
"Currently we have reached tentative understandings with Fudan University,
Shanghai Jiaotong University, Peking University and Tsinghua University to
carry out original research," said Dr. Wang. The China Research Laboratory
will donate hardware equipment and software for these joint research
projects. "Locating one of IBM's research laboratories in Beijing is a
statement of our commitment to China and to the growth of its technology
infrastructure," said Dr. James C. McGroddy, senior vice president, Research,
for IBM. "We expect the laboratory to make great contributions both to
China's technological development and to IBM. We are anxious for it to begin
its bright future."

ARGO DATA RESOURCE COMPANY
MARCH, 1995 -- Page 10 of 53
IBM LAN SOFTWARE NETWORK NEWS
Profile
Argo Data Resource Corporation develops branch-automation software for the
banking industry. Argo's application development tools are used by some of
the nation's largest banks to develop in-house OS/2 applications.
Environment
Argo Data uses OS/2 2.1 as its platform for developing and testing software.
It also uses Communications Manager/2 (CM/2) for reliable access to the OS/2
server (hosts) which runs Database Manager 2 OS/2. The client/server
operation spans eight departments and ranges from two to 50 client PCs per
deparment. Each department uses LAN Server* 3.0. Future plans call for
upgrading clients to OS/2 Warp and servers to LAN Server 4.0.
Description
An OS/2-based client/server package from Argo Data is being used in
automating an increasing number of branch offices in some of nation's top ten
banks. Argo Data's suite of development tools, called BankPro, provides
banks with the ability to write internal applications which take advantage of
OS/2 on the server.
Using BankPro, tellers' PCs act as clients connect to a single server. The
bank's mission-critical tasks are handled automatically by OS/2, LAN Server,
CM/2, and DB2/2*.
"With OS/2 on the server, it can handle between 50 and 60 processes
simultaneously and reliably," said Argo Data Software Development Manager,
David Perkowski.
"With OS/2 and LAN Server, if a teller's system goes down for some reason,
the others on the LAN continue to run just fine," he added.
As tellers handle incoming requests from customers, CM/2 transmits the data
from the client PC to the server. On the server, DB2/2 takes over and
tabulates each teller's cash-box totals. In addition, the server application
runs a security module, an electronic audit- trail journal, and record
printing.
"OS/2 is clearly our server strategy for this mission-critical application.
We couldn't do without its reliability," Perkowski said.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
MARCH, 1995 -- Page 11 of 53
IBM LAN SOFTWARE NETWORK NEWS
Profile
The National Geographic Society, which has 9.2 million members, publishes
National Geographic** magazine, World magazine for children and travel
publications. It uses an OS/2-based fulfillment systems to provide quick and
efficient member service.
Environment
The National Geographic Society has migrated off the mainframe to an
environment with 600 OS/2 2.1 client PCs and seven LAN Server systems. It
also has a remote link with offices in the United Kingdom.
Description
After 30 years of using a mainframe-based magazine fulfillment system,
National Geographic felt it was time for a change to a real-time
client/server system. After considering Windows, the I.S. department went
with OS/2, because, according to Dick Mechler, director of applications and
engineering support, "we needed a bulletproof operating systems that could
handle upwards of 100,000 transactions a day."
Using OS/2, member request transactions that generally had taken more than 10
days to process, now take less than five days in 90 percent of the cases.
The new system, which is part of a re-engineering effort, has increased
productivity 25 percent.

support a wide range of products and have hundreds of support
representatives.
According to the SSPA press release, "...Being a STAR Award winner means that
you've both excelled as a service provider in your customer's eyes and you've
been singled out for this excellence by your peers in the industry," said
Bill Rose, SSPA founder and Executive Director.
The Software Support Professionals Association, with more than 360 member
companies, was created in 1989 to provide a value-added forum where service
and support professionals in the software industry could share ideas and
discuss developing trends.

NETSP NAMED 1995 HOT PRODUCT BY DATA COMMUNICATIONS
by Diane Stratton
For the Network Security category, IBM NetSP Single Signon was named 1995 Hot
Product by Data Communications magazine.
According to the January issue of Data Communications, "Net managers are used
to making trade-offs, but when it comes to security, halfway measure lead
nowhere. Early last year, IBM eliminated any need for compromise when it
delivered its Network Security Program (NetSP), the first security product to
combine the simplicity of single sign-on with password encryption and
third-party user authentication."
Network Security Program is supported across TCP/IP, LU 6.2, and NetBIOS
environments. IPX/SPX on OS/2 and DOS/Windows is supported for
authentication servers and clients running on workstations with Novell
NetWare. All platforms provide client and application server functions. The
authentication server functions are provided on AIX and OS/2.

GAIN ACCESS TO COLLEAGUES AND INFORMATION
by Pete Greulich
Client/server computing for businesses of all sizes is provided today through
OS/2 Warp Connect and OS/2 LAN Server 4.0. In addition, IBM WorkGroup,
announced in November 1994, provides OS/2 users with integrated
communications, work management and information management functions that
streamline the way teams get work done.
IBM provides client/server foundation
Corporate customers and value-added resellers who set up client/server
networks today become, by necessity, the integrators of the basic foundation
of their systems. They must buy the basic pieces individually, test that
they will work together smoothly, and obtain service for each part
separately. As a result, customers are not making the best use of their
valuable time, the costs are higher than they need to be, and the quality of
the resulting system is not as good as it could be.
To resolve this problem, IBM is packaging products for customer convenience.
IBM is offering the OS/2 Warp Connect package as a complete client solution.
IBM assembles the pieces you need - including the operating system,
transports and requesters - and performs the integration testing and
coordinates service. You can save time and money by buying OS/2 Warp Connect
rather than purchasing and installing these or similar products separately.
OS/2 Warp Connect
OS/2 Warp Connect, currently in beta, seamlessly links users to colleagues
and the information resources of their organization. It provides local and
remote network access in one package with an easy installation.
Using the OS/2 Warp Connect requesters, you can access a local or remote IBM
LAN Server, Novell NetWare** or Microsoft Windows NT** network, and use
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) capability for
multivendor environments.
LAN Distance* Remote is included to link the mobile user or telecommuter
anywhere in the world either to each other or to the LAN at the office over
public telephone lines. You can run your current client software while on
the road with the same familiar user interface as your regular desktop.

Brokers in the Noordstar insurance company, Belgium, submit insurance
contracts by using OS/2 and LAN Distance Remote to connect to their host
system at the home office several times a day. Noordstar required a secure,
high-performance connection to their mainframe application. LAN Distance
Remote was the only product that fulfilled these requirements. The value to
Noordstar is a good, inexpensive solution that attracts and holds onto the
best brokers in the business.
OS/2 Warp Connect is shipped with the separate BonusPak that includes IBM
Person to Person* (P2P) software. Using P2P to display live video with text
and graphics, the Royal Children's Hospital in Australia links children to
their classrooms. The children can keep up with school work, and their
classmates can see what goes on in a hospital. The BonusPak also provides
easy dial-up access to the Internet and to various online services.
OS/2 Warp Connect also includes TCP/IP for OS/2 so that you can access the
Internet through the LAN or a dial-up connection. IBM's Internet access
tools, such as the IBM Gopher, IBM WebExplorer, File Transfer Protocol (FTP),
Telnet, and NewsReader are available for your use through the IBM Global
Network or other service providers.
OS/2 LAN Server 4.0
The debut of LAN Server 4.0 in September 1994 earned accolades from
customers, the press and industry consultants for enhanced ease of use
combined with proven reliability, stability and performance. In fact, LAN
Server 4.0 was awarded Best of Show for Network Software at the NetWorld +
Interop '94 conference in September 1994.
Whether your LAN is large or small, OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 combined with OS/2
Warp Connect provides a reliable, high-performance client/server environment.
Choose OS/2 LAN Server Entry for networks of as many as 80 users or OS/2 LAN
Server Advanced for mission-critical environments of as many as 1,000 users
per server. Whichever you choose, you will benefit from the intuitive
Workplace Shell interface which makes network management as simple as drag
and drop.
Nicholas Petreley of InfoWorld magazine wrote, "The new tools are so easy to
master, in fact, that I was able to install OS/2 2.11 and LAN Server,
configure modems, printers, applications and disk resources, and also make
them available to various groups and users, all in a leisurely afternoon."
(August 22, 1994)
LAN Server interoperates with other LANs, making migrations, consolidations
and coexistence easier, and allows customers to add LAN Server clients or
servers incrementally. And IBM has tools that greatly simplify the process
of migrating from NetWare or Microsoft LAN Manager to LAN Server 4.0.
LAN Server provides access to a wide range of platforms, from PCs to
mainframes. LAN Server is available for AIX*, OS/400*, VM and MVS, and
supports a complete range of clients, including OS/2, DOS, DOS/Windows,
Macintosh** and TCP/IP.

According to Ken Mackin, independent consultant and president of Product
Logic Corporation, "The new product's innovative graphical user interface,
easy installation, high performance and reasonable hardware requirements make
LAN Server 4.0 a viable NOS for offices of all types, sizes and budgets.
Frankly, I'm highly impressed."
IBM plans to extend LAN Server by offering open, industry-standard,
distributed computing services, such as global directory and security, as
defined in IBM's Open Blueprint for distributed computing.

HOW WELL DOES LAN SERVER 4.0 PERFORM?
by Diane Stratton
LANQuest Labs, one of the nation's leading independent network product
testing laboratory since 1987, tested the performance of 3 NOS's: LAN Server
4.0, Windows NT Server v3.5, and NetWare 4.02 in Fall, 1994.
According to the LANQuest October, 1994 report: "For a server with a single
CPU and 800 equivalent users, LAN Server Advanced was 38% faster than Windows
NT Server and 11% faster than NetWare. Surprisingly, LAN Server Advanced
with a single CPU was 10% faster than Windows NT Server on a server with
dual-CPUs for the same equivalent 800 users. LAN Server Advanced had the
best performance at every load point from 200 to 800 equivalent users..".
MARCH, 1995 -- Page 17 of 53

For LAN Server Entry the report observed "With its comparable performance to
the Advanced Server in the 20 to 80 user range this makes the Entry Server a
cost effective solution for a new business or a large account with numerous
remote sites."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
IBM ADVANCED SERVER FOR WORKGROUPS REFRESH
by Fred Castenada
IBM has refreshed its product, IBM Advanced Server for Workgroups, V1.0, to
include the latest version of Lotus Notes** and IBM LAN Server Advanced.
IBM ADVANCED SERVER FOR WORKGROUPS is the only industry "bundle" or
integrated offering that provides a customer the ability to install a
six-user and server network for Lotus Notes, virtually error-free.
The product comes with everything you need, software-wise, for a six-user
starter set for Lotus Notes in the area of Groupware.
The software components that it includes are the following:
o IBM OS/2 V2.11 (fullpack, with DOS/Windows support) for the server node;
o Lotus Notes V3.2, server and six user client licenses; the client
software for both Windows and OS/2 platforms are included, and the
customer can mix-and-match the clients to meet the organization's
requirements;
o IBM LAN Server 4.0 - Advanced, which provides the Network Operating
System for the server, as well as six clients (or requesters) for either
DOS, Windows, or OS/2 users; and
o IBM System Performance Monitor/2 V2.0, which provides a graphical online
tool that captures information on memory, processor utilization, and disk
performance for the system. In addition, a complete memory analyzer for
developers is included, thus giving the customer the ability to do
performance tuning and system load balancing.
This product also includes a step-by-step approach for the installation in
the form of a 35-page manual, called "Getting Started." This provides all the
naming conventions and a "cookbook" so that a user can install all seven
MARCH, 1995 -- Page 26 of 53
IBM LAN SOFTWARE NETWORK NEWS
nodes within a few hours. The system has been pre-tested, and pre-certified
by the IBM Integration and Test Laboratory in Austin, Texas.
This is the only product of its kind that will allow the user to have a fully
operational installation of Lotus Notes for a server and six clients, fully
functioning within several hours. The user who installs the network only has
to have a base knowledge of DOS and Windows to complete a successful
installation, since even a sample case study--complete with naming
conventions--is included.
The complexity of installing a network, integrating components, and testing
them for successful operation in a Lotus Notes environment has been reduced
significantly for the user. Starting a Lotus Notes pilot with a half-dozen
users is as easy as reading a "cookbook", thus saving the user time, costs,
and frustration.

IBM LAN SERVER 4.0 PERFORMANCE, CAPACITY ENHANCEMENTS, & TUNING TIPS
by Carol McKinney
Announcing the availability of the IBM LAN Server 4.0 Performance white
paper. This paper is a must-read for LAN Server Administrators.
This white paper provides you with design considerations and in-depth
information about LAN Server performance. It describes improved performance
and capacity features of IBM LAN Server 4.0 and includes new information
about the capabilities of the Performance Tuning Assistant Utility.
Additional features discussed include NetBIOS over TCP/IP and SMP Support.
Customers can access the white paper on Internet, CompuServe, Prodigy,
OS2BBS, and other electronic services. IBM VNET users can access the white
paper on MKTTOOLS with the package name L40PRFWP.

LAN SERVER AND VOLUME SPANNING
by Len Brissette
If you need to do volume spanning with LAN Server, there are solutions
available that can provide excellent performance. Volume spanning is
required to accomodate very large amounts of data in a single directory
structure.
There are 3 alternatives to do this with LAN Server: use a hardware
implementation (like PROLAINT SMART ARRAY), use a larger disk to avoid the
spanning requirement, or use a vendor software solution. For best
performance, use hardware with built in volume spanning.

CORRECTIVE SERVICE DISKETTE FOR LAN TO LAN WIDE AREA PROGRAM
by Wendy White
Corrective service for LAN to LAN Wide Area Program is now available:
o PTF # UB14916 - LTLW Version 1.09 (Prod. No.74F7668)
o PTF # UB14917 - Entry LTLW Version 1.03 (Prod. No. 62G8512)
These releases of the LAN to LAN Wide Area Network Program (LTLW) Version
1.09 and Entry LAN to LAN Wide Area Network Program Version 1.03 provides:
1. Easy upgrade of any LTLW license to this most recent (and powerful) level
of software. Previous restrictions have been lifted to improve
distribution of the product.
2. Improved initialization that will wait for Communications Manager/2 APPC
support to fully start without need for interaction by the user.
MARCH, 1995 -- Page 28 of 53
IBM LAN SOFTWARE NETWORK NEWS
3. For IPX**, there have been some large networks encountered where 300
Services can be managed using LTLW's qualifier list, but managing RIP is
more difficult. RIP message overhead is about 3 times less then SAP
overhead. For this reason, the LTLW now has the support for up to 1000
RIPs in the total network without filtering.
You should still try to make this manageable over the WAN because it
affects every LAN in the network that touches the WAN via LTLW and
NetWare routers.
4. For IP and IPX protocols, the Token-Ring interface now caches the Route
Information to addresses found on the LAN. This will improve performance
on the LAN when many bridged segments are present.
5. A SYSLEVEL file for additional SYSLEVEL requests on the machine.
This Corrective Service Diskette addresses the following problems:
1. APPC session initialization deadlocks when 2 LTLWs are calling each other
at the same time.
2. For IPX, the hop count and metric were not accurately being calculated in
larger complex networks.
3. During initialization, the 802.2 protocol stack would handle error
conditions that did not conform to the IBM LAN Technical reference
manual. Changes were made to accommodate this. LTLW will prevent the
802.2 protocol stack from locking up the machine.
4. In some scenarios, LTLW's SNMP agent would report duplicate data if
connected to another LTLW no supporting the same protocols.

ISVS PRAISE IBM CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
By Joyce A. Batty
In appreciation and celebration of vendors who have joined IBM's
Certification Program in the last year, IBM awarded two ThinkPads loaded with
OS/2 Warp. The program, in existence for just over a year, has over 1300
compatible software products with more being declared compatible every day.
The "Ready! for IBM LAN" drawing was won by Halcyon Software, Inc. of
Campbell, California. Halycon produces two Graphics Conversion Library
products to assist developers in adding graphics import/export capability to
applications.
John Frances, V.P. of Technical Marketing for Halcyon, said: "A free
computer is nice, but IBM's LAN compatibility program has helped us in a much
more important area-namely the bottom line. Not only did the program allow
MARCH, 1995 -- Page 35 of 53

us to certify our applications for a popular environment inexpensively and
efficiently, but the associated marketing listings, especially in the Sources
& Solutions* directory have generated hundreds of leads and consequential
sales."
Philip Lieberman, owner, Lieberman and Associates Design and Engineering
Group, developer of Intensive Care Utilities for LANs said: "We feel our
clients have more confidence in our product because of IBM product
compatibility. We use the IBM compatibility marks in our presentations,
advertising, and in our manuals. The marks demonstrate our commitment to the
IBM OS/2 and LAN Server platforms."
Lists of LAN compatible products and/or test reports of products in the
"Tested and Approved for IBM LAN Systems" program can be found in a variety
of places including:
o 1-800-IBM-4FAX (document 3041 and Options 3 and 5 from main menu)
o MAX CD-ROM from Computer Reseller News
o Sources and Solutions Directory 1-203-452-7704 fax: 1-203-268-1075

12. YOU ASKED FOR IT
_____________________
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Diane Stratton
As the publisher/editor of the LAN Software Network News, I receive a lot of
feedback from you, our readers. Many of you ask questions, so this section
is where I will answer them... you asked for it!
1. Please add more information about OS/2.
Included in this issue are the latest OS/2 Warp announcements in the
What's News section. Look for Warp events in the events and education
section.
2. Please shorten the Information Sources Section.
Several of you asked me to shorten this section since it is repeated with
each newsletter (and updated too). With this issue, it is shorter.
Thanks again for your input and taking the time to let me know what
information you need to help you be more effective in your job. And most of
all, thank you for your interest in IBM products. We continue to create new
products and update existing ones based on your needs.
