Jerry's View
being short excerpts from leading trade journals with occasional
editorial comments.
Volume 0: Number 0
From: ComputerWorld 04OCT93
Microsoft thinks that Chicago will replace Win 3.1. However
most OEMs are unconvinced. They (the OEMs) do not see enough
demand to warrant bundling Workgroups for Windows instead of
Win 3.1. In addition Microsoft will be charging double the $15
amount the currently want for Win 3.1. (page 1)
PC Co. still fighting enormous backlogs (page 1)
Microsoft OLE 2.0 consists of more than 400 separate
interfaces that vendors can implement piecemeal. As a result
numerous incompatibilities are likely. "The days of software
lock-in are back" Norm Weizer. "There's a perception that OLE
2.0 interfaces are going to be plug and play - which they will
not" John Landry - Lotus. (page 2)
COSE to test Unix dashboard this month. (page 4).
IBM announced certification program for LAN Server application
developers. User's give Lan Server thumbs up. "We feel that
[the OS/2 LAN Server-based platform] is an industrial-grade
implementation that works" Don Harrison, director of quality
assurance, Atchison, Topeka, Santa Fe Railway Co. page 43.
IBM to move token ring to 100 mbits. Also good graphic (page

Delivery of OSF/DME is running late. page 55
Downsizing case study (page 71) from ES/9000 to AS/400 savings
about 2.8 million after 6.5 million in costs are paid off
(about 28 months).
Good graphic for COBRA (page 77). While Microsoft has pulled
out all stops for OLE 2.0 all other vendors are getting behind
Cobra. HP, IBM DEC and Sun have all announced or released
their implementations. Novel will also embed Cobra into their
NOS. also check out sidebar page 78
In-depth article (page 89) comparing LAN Servers. Banyan gets
top markets followed by IBM LAN Server. Netware and Lan
Manager tie for third. "LAN Server is going to offer a number
of advanced distributed computing elements not currently
supported by NT" Michael Milliken (VP, Interop Co.) LAN Server
4.0 will contain full DCE compatibility. Unlike the version
from MS-NT the DCE is based on components that have been
purchased directly from OSF. IBM has made significant
leadership strides in object-oriented technology. Its SOM
object Developers Toolkit Version 2.0 allows programmers to
build software that is truly reusable. (page 93).
Head line page 101 "NT Advanced Server: High on ease of use,
compatibility; low on innovation, technical support"
Number of pages of IBM ads = 14 including 3 page fan-fold on
first page plus thinkpad insert.

IBM PSP to announce new version of OS/2 (code name Ferengi or
Product X). This variant is supposed to be dropped right into
a DOS/Windows environment and seamlessly integrates into the
config.sys. In short it can give you OS/2 functionality
without having to wipe and reload disks. Two interesting
points: 1) Since the license deal between Microsoft and IBM is
now over IBM will not have to pay royalty to Microsoft for
Ferengi. 2) Maybe that's why the intro price is supposed to be
$49.00 If this works it could be a winner. page 4. In related
piece IBM has recently signed a bunch of corporate license for
OS/2 worth about 180,000 copies. All the companies were in the
insurance industry.
MS releases first set of bug fixes for NT (96 in total) on
Compuserve. page 4
Other products to check include from IBM "HighPoint"
application generator. "VisualAge" object oriented visual
programming, "IMS C/S for Windows" and Datahub Version 1.2.
Also check out Information Warehouse family of products. (page

How about this? Novel finally did release Unix trademark to
X/Open. Big news since this will allow a marketing campaign
along the same lines as the now famous "Intel Inside". All
Unix vendors will have to get their certification from X/Open
(page 12).
Stat: Last year US Corporations spent $1.7 billion dollars for
software that they already owned. T. Poley Ex Director
Personal Computer Assets Management Institute. (page 12).
effective management of total pc assets could save $20b/year
(page 1)
OS/2 garners sales at NT expense. (page 20). As many corporate
account near the end of months-long testing and evaluation
they like what the see of mission critical applications under
OS/2 2.1. Ironically the release of NT means that IS
organizations can now hold it up for direct comparison with
Lan Server and OS/2 2.1. "What is helping is that users can
touch, smell and feel NT. And they are seeing that it has some
nice stuff but it doesn't run all DOS and Windows applications
and doesn't run them as fast". Bob Holmes, manager of
evaluation technology at Southern California Gas Co. Allstate
will deploy 60,000 copies. Westinghouse, 10,000 copies. State
Farm Insurance, 5,000 copies. Accounts well also swayed by
development tools, stability and more complete feature set.
And a conviction that OS/2 integrate desktop and mainframe
applications reliably. Still, the number of users asking for
OS/2 to be preloaded on their machines remains small.
Digital puts off Windows NT products (page 25) Instead of end
of year shipments look for late winter early spring.
C/S (page 28) c/s move may cost you up to 50% more. In the
past ten years Gartner estimates $400 billion in hardware and
another $1.6 trillion in support and administration of DESKTOP
hw/sw. great article
NCR announces OS/2 to NT migration service (page 60). Users
and analysts express mixed reviews. They must be joking.
