Speech Recognition Family: IBM Personal Dictation System
Bringing the power of speech to personal computers
GET LARGE-VOCABULARY ACCURACY
How to have an easier relationship with your PC?
Just talk to it.
Because now, you can create business and medical text - quickly and
accurately - simply by speaking to your OS/2((R)) workstation.
The highly accurate IBM Personal Dictation System actually analyzes
your spoken words and then enters them into your computer. Using a
sophisticated general office dictation language model, it lets you
dictate:
o Letters
o Reports
o Electronic mail
o Office correspondence
o Technical documents
o Medical transcriptions
o Legal correspondence
o Contracts
As a result, you no longer have to use a keyboard to enter words or
data. You can even run applications without using the keyboard.
This capability is especially important for business professionals,
as well as others in paper- and forms-intensive occupations, such as:
o Doctors
o Nurses
o Lawyers
o Reporters
o Loan officers
o Auditors
o Insurance personnel
o Researchers
Winner of Byte magazine's 1993 Spring and Fall Comdex awards, the IBM
____
Personal Dictation System even has optional vocabularies for
journalists, doctors, and other medical personnel, which include
specialized terminology and language models.
No matter what kind of occupation you are in, you can use your
computer more comfortably and productively with the IBM Personal
Dictation System. So, if typing interferes with your work - or you
never learned how to type - the IBM Personal Dictation System may be
the solution for you.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
As you dictate your text into a handheld or a headset microphone, the
system analyzes it and displays it in a speech window. You can
dictate text as fast as 70 to 100 words a minute. And, because
properly recognized words are automatically spelled correctly, you
don't even need to perform a spell check. Text can be transferred
into applications running on OS/2, DOS guests or WIN-OS/2(TM)
windows.
Because the IBM Personal Dictation System uses sophisticated
statistical language models and a high-performance speech accelerator
card on a Personal System/2,((R)) ValuePoint(TM) or compatible
workstation, it is highly accurate. For example, it can correctly
choose between like-sounding words, such as "to," "two" and "too" or
"our" and "hour."
Using the Voice Action Editor, you can easily create special
commands, or incorporate standard phrases and paragraphs into
documents. Sophisticated APIs (Application Program Interfaces) are
also available for application developers.
The IBM Personal Dictation System uses a speech adapter card designed
by IBM to rapidly analyze your spoken input. These adapter cards are
available for a wide range of personal computers, including most IBM
compatibles, IBM ValuePoint computers (which accept ISA bus cards),
and IBM PS/2((R)) computers (which accept Micro Channel((R)) cards).
OPTIONAL VOCABULARIES
To make the system even more accurate for medical and journalistic
dictation, you can order optional vocabularies for these areas.
Easily installed, the vocabularies include words, spellings, word
probabilities, and linguistic information, which enable the IBM
Personal Dictation System to correctly "hear" industry-specific
words.
The following vocabularies can be ordered separately:
o Journalism - 30,000 words.
Constructed from the archives of major newspapers, this
vocabulary includes a variety of significant proper names, as
well as the terminology used in various editorial sections.
o Emergency medicine - 16,000 words. This vocabulary includes
medical terms used in hospital emergency room environments; it's
also appropriate for other doctors and health-care professionals.
o Radiology - 19,000 words. Carefully constructed for radiologists,
this vocabulary includes medical terminology used in radiology
and related specialties.
SUPPORTED APPLICATIONS
The IBM Personal Dictation System currently provides support for the
following applications:
o WordPerfect((R)) for OS/2 Version 5.2
o WordPerfect for Windows(TM)
Version 5.2
o Lotus Notes((R)) for OS/2 Version 3.0
o Lotus((R)) 1-2-3((R)) for OS/2 Version 1.1
o OS/2 PM Workplace Shell((R))
Version 2.1
o OS/2 System Editor Version 2.1
o OS/2 Communications Manager 3270 Emulator Version 2.0
o Microsoft((R)) Word((R)) for OS/2
Version 1.1
o DeScribe(TM) for OS/2 Version 4.0
In addition, you can use the IBM Personal Dictation System with most
applications that run on the OS/2 2.1 desktop and that support a data
transfer clipboard via the Paste/Edit function. For applications that
do not support Paste, you can use keystroke emulation. You can
transfer data to your application by voice, mouse or keyboard.
WHERE IT WAS DEVELOPED
The IBM Personal Dictation System was developed by IBM in Boca Raton
in conjunction with IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center. It is an
isolated-word, speaker-dependent system using language models
developed by IBM to achieve its high accuracy.
