  1. Speech Recognition Family:  IBM Personal Dictation System
  2.
  3. Bringing the power of speech to personal computers
  4.
  5.
  6.
  7. GET LARGE-VOCABULARY ACCURACY
  8.
  9. How to have an easier relationship with your PC?
  10.
  11. Just talk to it.
  12.
  13. Because now, you can create business and medical text - quickly and
  14. accurately - simply by speaking to your OS/2((R)) workstation.
  15.
  16. The highly accurate IBM Personal Dictation System actually analyzes
  17. your spoken words and then enters them into your computer. Using a
  18. sophisticated general office dictation language model, it lets you
  19. dictate:
  20.
  21. o   Letters
  22. o   Reports
  23. o   Electronic mail
  24. o   Office correspondence
  25. o   Technical documents
  26. o   Medical transcriptions
  27. o   Legal correspondence
  28. o   Contracts
  29.
  30. As a result, you no longer have to use a keyboard to enter words or
  31. data. You can even run applications without using the keyboard.
  32.
  33. This capability is especially important for business professionals,
  34. as well as others in paper- and forms-intensive occupations, such as:
  35.
  36. o   Doctors
  37. o   Nurses
  38. o   Lawyers
  39. o   Reporters
  40. o   Loan officers
  41. o   Auditors
  42. o   Insurance personnel
  43. o   Researchers
  44.
  45. Winner of Byte magazine's 1993 Spring and Fall Comdex awards, the IBM
  46.           ____
  47. Personal Dictation System even has optional vocabularies for
  48. journalists, doctors, and other medical personnel, which include
  49. specialized terminology and language models.
  50.
  51. No matter what kind of occupation you are in, you can use your
  52. computer more comfortably and productively with the IBM Personal
  53. Dictation System. So, if typing interferes with your work - or you
  54. never learned how to type - the IBM Personal Dictation System may be
  55. the solution for you.
  56.
  57.
  58. HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
  59.
  60. As you dictate your text into a handheld or a headset microphone, the
  61. system analyzes it and displays it in a speech window. You can
  62. dictate text as fast as 70 to 100 words a minute. And, because
  63. properly recognized words are automatically spelled correctly, you
  64. don't even need to perform a spell check.  Text can be transferred
  65. into applications running on OS/2, DOS guests or WIN-OS/2(TM)
  66. windows.
  67.
  68. Because the IBM Personal Dictation System uses sophisticated
  69. statistical language models and a high-performance speech accelerator
  70. card on a Personal System/2,((R)) ValuePoint(TM) or compatible
  71. workstation, it is highly accurate. For example, it can correctly
  72. choose between like-sounding words, such as "to," "two" and "too" or
  73. "our" and "hour."
  74.
  75. Using the Voice Action Editor, you can easily create special
  76. commands, or incorporate standard phrases and paragraphs into
  77. documents.  Sophisticated APIs (Application Program Interfaces) are
  78. also available for application developers.
  79.
  80. The IBM Personal Dictation System uses a speech adapter card designed
  81. by IBM to rapidly analyze your spoken input. These adapter cards are
  82. available for a wide range of personal computers, including most IBM
  83. compatibles, IBM ValuePoint computers (which accept ISA bus cards),
  84. and IBM PS/2((R)) computers (which accept Micro Channel((R)) cards).
  85.
  86.
  87. OPTIONAL VOCABULARIES
  88.
  89. To make the system even more accurate for medical and journalistic
  90. dictation, you can order optional vocabularies for these areas.
  91. Easily installed, the vocabularies include words, spellings, word
  92. probabilities, and linguistic information, which enable the IBM
  93. Personal Dictation System to correctly "hear" industry-specific
  94. words.
  95.
  96. The following vocabularies can be ordered separately:
  97.
  98. o   Journalism - 30,000 words.
  99.     Constructed from the archives of major newspapers, this
  100.     vocabulary includes a variety of significant proper names, as
  101.     well as the terminology used in various editorial sections.
  102. o   Emergency medicine - 16,000 words.  This vocabulary includes
  103.     medical terms used in hospital emergency room environments; it's
  104.     also appropriate for other doctors and health-care professionals.
  105. o   Radiology - 19,000 words. Carefully constructed for radiologists,
  106.     this vocabulary includes medical terminology used in radiology
  107.     and related specialties.
  108.
  109.
  110. SUPPORTED APPLICATIONS
  111.
  112. The IBM Personal Dictation System currently provides support for the
  113. following applications:
  114.
  115. o   WordPerfect((R)) for OS/2 Version 5.2
  116. o   WordPerfect for Windows(TM)
  117.     Version 5.2
  118. o   Lotus Notes((R)) for OS/2 Version 3.0
  119. o   Lotus((R)) 1-2-3((R)) for OS/2 Version 1.1
  120. o   OS/2 PM Workplace Shell((R))
  121.     Version 2.1
  122. o   OS/2 System Editor Version 2.1
  123. o   OS/2 Communications Manager 3270 Emulator Version 2.0
  124. o   Microsoft((R)) Word((R)) for OS/2
  125.     Version 1.1
  126. o   DeScribe(TM) for OS/2 Version 4.0
  127.
  128.
  129. In addition, you can use the IBM Personal Dictation System with most
  130. applications that run on the OS/2 2.1 desktop and that support a data
  131. transfer clipboard via the Paste/Edit function. For applications that
  132. do not support Paste, you can use keystroke emulation. You can
  133. transfer data to your application by voice, mouse or keyboard.
  134.
  135.
  136. WHERE IT WAS DEVELOPED
  137.
  138. The IBM Personal Dictation System was developed by IBM in Boca Raton
  139. in conjunction with IBM's Thomas J.  Watson Research Center. It is an
  140. isolated-word, speaker-dependent system using language models
  141. developed by IBM to achieve its high accuracy.
  142.
  143.
  144. WHAT YOU GET
  145.
  146. The IBM Personal Dictation System is shipped with the following
  147. materials:
  148.
  149. o   3.5-inch diskettes
  150. o   Installation/User's Guide
  151. o   Program License Agreement
  152. o   Proof of License
  153. o   License information
  154. o   Headset microphone
  155. o   Assembly instructions
  156.
  157.
