  183. Upgrading DeskMan/2
  184. ___________________________________________

  186. This procedure assumes that you are upgrading from DeskMan/2, version 1.00,
  187. 1.01, 1.10, 1.11, 1.20, the 1.5 release introduced at the April 1994 IBM PSP
  188. Technical Interchange, 1.5 GA, or 1.51 to version 1.51a.  It further assumes
  189. that you still have your original program diskette, plus an archive called
  190. DM151A.ZIP, which contains a copy of this file, as well as the appropriate
  191. patch files to update your current version of DeskMan/2 to the latest version
  192. of DeskMan/2.  If you know which version of DeskMan/2 you are currently using,
  193. you could substitute a smaller, version specific archive, such as specified in
  194. the table below:

  207. Upgrading DeskMan/2 consists of upgrading the DeskMan/2 distribution files,
  208. and reinstalling.  The new DevTech installation tool should detect and use
  209. any settings and defaults from your existing DeskMan/2 installation.
  210.  
  211. The procedure will update your DeskMan/2 master files.  None of your current
  212. DeskMan/2 files will be impacted until step 7.  In no case will your existing
  213. DeskMan/2 data files be changed during the upgrade procedure.  It may be
  214. necessary to shut down and restart the system in step 7, if DeskMan/2 has
  215. been used after the system was last booted.
  216.  
  217.     NOTE: If you are using OS/2 2.1 GA, please make sure that you have

  222. Substitute the name of your Patch file archive for DM151R.ZIP in any of the
  223. following steps:
  224.  
  225.   1) Create a new directory on your hard disk.
  226.  
  227.                    For example:  MD C:\DESKMAN2
  228.  
  229.   2) Copy all the files from your DeskMan/2 installation diskette into this
  230.      new directory.
  231.  
  232.                    For example:  COPY A:\*.* C:\DESKMAN2\*.* /V
  233.  
  234.   3) Those who have version 1.5 of DeskMan/2 must unpack the packed file,
  235.      DESKMAN.15@, and delete the DESKMAN.15@ and UNPACK.EXE files from the
  236.      directory.
  237.  
  238.                    For example: UNPACK DESKMAN.15@
  239.                                 DELETE DESKMAN.15@
  240.                                 DELETE UNPACK.EXE
  241.  
  242.      Those who have version 1.51 of DeskMan/2 must unpack the packed file,
  243.      PACKAGE.EXE, and delete PACKAGE.EXE from the directory.

  248.   4) Place the archive, DM151A.ZIP, into the new directory.
  249.  
  250.                    For example:  Copy DM151A.ZIP into C:\DESKMAN2
  251.  
  252.   5) Unzip all files in the archive.
  253.  
  254.                    For example:  UNZIP DM151A.ZIP
  255.  
  256.   6) Apply the update.
  257.  
  258.                    For example:  UPDATE
  259.  
  260.   7) Your new directory now contains your updated DeskMan/2 files.  First
  261.      delete the archive and patch files, and then please back up the
  262.      remaining files before running the installation procedure.
  263.  
  264.                    For example:  DELETE PATCH.EXE

  266.                                  DELETE *.RTP
  267.                                  DELETE DM151A.ZIP

  272.     It may be necessary to shut down and restart the system, if DeskMan/2
  273.     has been used after the system was last booted.
  274.  
  275.   8) Run the INSTALL program.  You will be presented with a number of
  276.      options.  The simplest way is to select "Do Express Actions" while
  277.      the "Express Action" button is set to "Install" and the Default
  278.      Target Directory points to the location where you wish the files
  279.      installed.  Alternatively, you can do a Custom Installation by clicking
  280.      on the "Custom Installation" button.  This takes you to the Custom
  281.      Installation screen, where you are presented with options for each
  282.      of the various components in the DeskMan/2 package, including the
  283.      DeskMan/2 object, the DM/2 Image and PM Image objects, and VUEMan/2.
  284.  
  285.      You can install, uninstall, remove, or skip any of the various DeskMan/2
  286.      components.  You can also specify individual directories for most of the
  287.      files.  Context sensitive help is displayed in the bottom line of the 
  288.      installation windows throughout the installation process.  For the
  289.      purpose of this overview, we will assume that you elected to install
  290.      everything.
  291.  
  292.      Note: If you want to delete some files from the DeskMan/2 package, you
  293.      must use the Remove options on the Custom Installation screen to
  294.      properly do so.
  295.  
  296.   9) After you have told the Install program what options should be used,
  297.      you will be asked for your customer name, if you have not previously
  298.      entered it.  After entering your customer name, the DevTech folder
  299.      will be created; and then the DeskMan/2 object, the DeskMan/2 User's
  300.      Guide, the DeskMan/2 WPS Extension's User's Guide, the DM/2 Image
  301.      object, the PM Image object, and the VUEMan/2 object will be installed.
  302.      Double-click the small icon in the upper left corner of the installation
  303.      window to end the installation process.  Alternatively, you can click on
  304.      the Exit button or you can select Exit from the Processing menu.  Either
  305.      will take you back to the initial installation screen and begin to exit
  306.      the program.
  307.  
  308.      Note: The DM/2 Image and PM Image objects are different interfaces to the
  309.            same program, the DeskMan/2 WPS Image Backup facility.  The former
  310.            is a non-PM UI and the latter is a PM GUI.
  311.  
  312.   10) Congratulations.  At this point, you have completed the installation of
  313.       DeskMan/2 v1.51.  You should now have a DevTech Folder on your desktop,
  314.       containing between one and six new icons.  The actual number depends on
  315.       the components you elected to install.  Two key objects represent the
  316.       DeskMan/2 User's Guides.  If there are any additional questions about
  317.       DeskMan/2, these User's Guides should provide the answers.  It is
  318.       highly recommended that users read through the Introduction, DeskMan/2,
  319.       DM/2 Image and VUEMan/2 sections in the DeskMan/2 User's Guide, and the
  320.       "What are the DeskMan/2 WPS Extensions?" section in the DeskMan/2 WPS
  321.       Extensions User's Guide.
  322.  
  323.   11) After installing the new version of DeskMan/2, please check DeskMan/2's
  324.       settings notebook and the System - usually found in the System Setup
  325.       folder - object's settings notebook - particularly the Extensions tab
  326.       - to verify that your settings are set as desired.  We recommend that
  327.       all REXX generation be turned off unless required, and that both icon
  328.       and data-file saves be enabled.  We STRONGLY recommend that you set
  329.       aside one or more directories for use solely by DeskMan/2's save and
  330.       restore features.  Close the settings notebook(s).
  331.

  334. IMPORTANT!  File references were changed between versions 1.11 and 1.20, so
  335. please follow the following steps carefully if upgrading from pre-1.20 code.
  336.  
  337. [Skip this section entirely if you are upgrading from DeskMan/2 version 1.20
  338. or later]
  339.  
  340.                                   ----------
  341.  
  342.   A)  Change your directory to the directory that contains your saved object
  343.       description file(s).  Backup this directory, and any subdirectories.
  344.       You will be deleting the files stored here, and recreating them with
  345.       the new version of DeskMan/2.
  346.  
  347.   B)  Verify that you have only DeskMan/2's saved object description files
  348.       (.DRC) and other internal files in your directory.  To do this, you
  349.       can compare the files you see on a directory listing with the files
  350.       referenced by the pathnames in the DeskMan/2 notebook settings.  If
  351.       you see only DESKMAN.DRC, or any of the following: DESKMAN.IRC,
  352.       DESKMAN.CMD, DESKMANI.CMD, or DESKMAN.LOG files; along with a bunch
  353.       of files that look like the names of objects which you see in your
  354.       Templates folder, you're fine.  Go to step C.  If you do not see
  355.       this, open your DRIVES folder, open the drives object that contains
  356.       the directory where you have your saved object description files,
  357.       and examine that directory through the graphical interface. If you
  358.       see the files mentioned above, then continue with step C, otherwise
  359.       skip to step D.
  360.  
  361.   C)  To make sure that you start out with a clean system, we're going to
  362.       delete your .DRC, .CMD, and data-file files from this directory.  Be
  363.       careful not to delete any other files, if you are using this directory
  364.       for any other purpose than storing DeskMan/2's various storage files.
  365.       If you are storing your icons in this directory, go ahead and delete
  366.       them if you wish. If you are storing your icons in a subdirectory, go
  367.       ahead and delete them from that subdirectory too, if you want to
  368.       remove the saved icon files.  Note that this has no effect upon your
  369.       existing objects' icons, only upon saved icons and icons not in use
  370.       that are saved in the same directory.
  371.  
  372.   D)  Save your desktop, using the DM/2 Image or PM Image programs, creating
  373.       an image of the WPS configuration immediately after installing the new
  374.       version of DeskMan/2.
  375.  
  376.                    For example:  FLUSH

  379.   E)  Save your desktop, again, using DeskMan/2 to automatically recreate
  380.       your saved object files and placing copies of your icons and data-file
  381.       objects into the appropriate sub-directories.

  383.                    For example:  Click MB2 on the DeskMan/2 object
  384.                                  Select the Save desktop option
  385.  
  386.   F)  Congratulations, you have now saved your system configuration using your
  387.       new copy of DeskMan/2 version 1.51, and have both a system image, and an
  388.       object-by-object backup of your Workplace Shell desktop.
