  20. we finalize the guest list for the wedding.

  22.     "The folks in legal suggested we substitute something a little
  23. different from the usual prenuptial agreement.  Just reach over
  24. and grab a Microsoft Software License Card from any package on
  25. your shelf.  It'll help you follow the general structure of what
  26. they've come up with...."

  30. Microsoft Marriage License Agreement

  34.     This is a legal agreement between you (either an individual or
  35. entity), the betrothed, and 
  36.  
  37. William H. Gates III.  If you do not agree to the terms of this
  38. agreement , promptly return the engagement ring and the
  39. accompanying items (shower gifts, wedding invitations, Porches,
  40. and other items) to the place you obtained them.

  46. 1.GRANT OF LICENSE
  47.  
  48. a) Dedicated use.  Microsoft grants you the right to access the
  49. Microsoft executive identified above, hereafter referred to as
  50. BILL 3.0, at your place of residence after business hours.  You
  51. may accompany BILL 3.0 to industry trade shows PROVIDED you do
  52. so no more than once every thirty (30) days.  However, you are
  53. restricted from blowing kisses, rolling your eyes, making rude
  54. hand gestures, or falling asleep during BILL 3.0 keynote
  55. addresses.

  59. b) Transitory Use.  Notwithstanding a), your continued  use of
  60. BILL 3.0 requires you to have physical possession of an original
  61. marriage license (either this agreement or an equivalent
  62. designed by the State of Washington) at all times.  While in
  63. transit, you may access BILL 3.0 from a public telephone, over a
  64. cellular network, or any other method you choose, so long as you
  65. otherwise comply with this agreement.

  71.                                          2. COPYRIGHT
  72.  
  73. You acknowledge that BILL 3.0 is, in fact, owned by the
  74. Microsoft Corporation and is protected by the United States
  75. Constitution and the Propeller Head Protection Act of 1981.  You
  76. may (a) make no more than one genetic clone of BILL 3.0 solely
  77. for backup or archival purposes, or (b) transfer BILL 3.0 to a
  78. cryogenic facility in the vent of an unrecoverable failure
  79.

  84.                3. COMPETITIVE UPGRADES

  86. You may not transfer free use of BILL 3.0 to another party. 
  87. However, you must transfer your rights under this Microsoft
  88. License Agreement on a permanent basis if BILL 3.0 requires an
  89. unscheduled upgrade. In that event, this license agreement will
  90. be terminated.  You will return BILL 3.0 and all accompanying
  91. materials to the newly designated recipient of license.  You may
  92. not decompile or disassemble the assets of BILL 3.0 for you
  93. benefit.

  99.     4. CROSS-PLATFORM INTERFACES
  100.  
  101. The BILL 3.0 package is capable of interfacing in multiple
  102. nodes.  In the event of impaired functionality, you may not
  103. interface with another system or network, or loan, rent, or
  104. lease, or transfer your affections to another user except as
  105. part of a transfer or other use expressly permitted 
  106.  
  107. by this Microsoft License Agreement.

  113.     5. LIMITED WARRANTY
  114.  
  115. It is warranted that (a) BILL 3.0 will perform substantially in
  116. accordance with industry standard 
  117.  
  118. marriage manuals for a period of ninety (90) days, and (b) any
  119. physical facilities accompanying 
  120.  
  121. BILL 3.0 will be free of defects in function and condition under
  122. normal use and service for a period of one (1) year.

  128.     6. SPOUSAL REMEDIES

  130. BILL 3.0's entire liability and your exclusive remedy shall be
  131. (a) return of the emotional price paid for acquistion of BILL
  132. 3.0, (b) replacement of BILL 3.0 witha new mate that performs in
  133. a similar manner, or (c) a lifetime supply of Microsoft mice. 
  134. Petitions for divorce must be returned to the Microdoft legal
  135. department with a copy of your reciept.  All waranties are void
  136. if failure of BILL 3.0 to perform has resulted froma household
  137. accident, verbal abuse, or premature product release.

  139. These remedies are not available outside of Redmond, Washington.

  145.     7. NO OTHER WARRANTIES
  146.  
  147. Microsoft disclaims all other warranties, either express or
  148. implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of
  149. performance, function, or fitness for a particular purpose with
  150. respect to BILL 3.0.

  156.     8. NO LIABILITY FOR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES
  157.  
  158. In no event shall Microsoft be liable for any damages whatsoever
  159. (including, without limitation, damages for lost sleep,
  160. interruption of social events, loss of companionship, or other
  161. pecuniary domestic losses) arising out of your use of or
  162. inability to use BILL 3.0, even  if Microsoft has been advised
  163. of the possibility of such damages.
