  8.  Q1:  Can I walk into a local software retailer today and
  9.       purchase OS/2 2.0?
  10.  
  11.  A1:  Our goal is to make OS/2 2.0 available everywhere DOS is
  12.       available and will be widely available on dealer shelves
  13.       toward the end of April.  If a customer's remarketer does
  14.       not yet have the product in stock, it will be available
  15.       through an 800# where IBM is taking direct orders.
  16.  
  17.  Q2:  When will Windows 3.1 code be included in OS/2 2.0?  Will
  18.       you issue another release?
  19.  
  20.  A2:  As you know, we have the intellectual property rights
  21.       to Windows 3.1 code and are currently running that code
  22.       in our lab.  We will review the final functionality of
  23.       Windows 3.1 and base any feature updates on what our
  24.       customers require.
  25.  
  26.  Q3:  IBM has always said it will not sacrifice product
  27.       quality to meet a delivery date.  Is today's product of
  28.       the highest possible quality or is it a buggy product
  29.       that has been released to meet your set delivery date?
  30.  
  31.  A3:  OS/2 is at a superior quality level.  We believe we are
  32.       delivering a world class product to our customers, one
  33.       which for the first time exploits the power of 32-bit
  34.       Intel-based systems.
  35.  
  36.  Q4:  Now that the 32-bit graphics engine will not be
  37.       included in the GA version of OS/2 2.0, is the product
  38.       a true 32-bit operating system?
  39.  
  40.  A4:  We are shipping a full-function 32-bit operating system
  41.       with a hybrid graphics engine.  It will support both
  42.       32-bit and 16-bit graphics applications.  As work
  43.       continues, we will enhance 32-bit graphics support as
  44.       part of our OS/2 product updates.

  46.  Q5:  When will the full 32-bit GRE be available?
  47.  
  48.  A5:  We are delivering all the function at GA.  Any
  49.       additional 32-bit graphics technology would be provided
  50.       as part of our regular product updates.
  51.  
  52.  Q6:  How many copies of OS/2 2.0 do you expect to sell by
  53.       year end '92?
  54.  
  55.  A6:  Currently, we have more than 1 million OS/2 licenses
  56.       and each of those users will receive a free upgrade to OS/2
  57.       2.0.  We expect to sell numbers in the millions.

  59.  Q7:  How many free copies of OS/2 2.0 have you been giving
  60.       away today?
  61.  
  62.  A7:  Just enough for appropriate merchandising.  As with any new
  63.       software introduction, a portion of not-for-sale (NSF)
  64.       copies are allocated for use by you, the press, as well as
  65.       by consultants, analysts and user groups and by our dealers,
  66.       to name a few.

  68.  Q8:  Will these not-for-sale (freebies) be included in your
  69.       OS/2-installed base figures?
  70.  
  71.  A8:  We will report unit shipments, just like the rest of the
  72.       industry.

  74.  Q9:  How is IBM planning to measure the success of OS/2 2.0 in
  75.       the short-term?  Long term?
  76.  
  77.  A9:  We use profitability, marketing share and customer
  78.       satisfaction.

  80.  Q10: How soon will you have another version or release of
  81.       OS/2?
  82.  
  83.  A10: We do not anticipate that a new version of OS/2 will be
  84.       required for some time.  Rather, we will continue to enhance
  85.       OS/2 2.0 over time by providing regular product
  86.       enhancements.

  88.  Pricing

  90.  Q11: Will you offer an introductory price for OS/2 2.0?
  91.  
  92.  A11: Yes.  Through July 31, Windows users can buy OS/2 2.0
  93.       for $49.00; any DOS user can upgrade for $99.00 and new
  94.       purchasers can buy OS/2 2.0 for $139.00.

  96.  Q12: What about OS/2 1.X users?
  97.  
  98.  A12: All existing OS/2 users can upgrade to 2.0 for free until
  99.       July 31.

  101.  Q13: What is the process for DOS, Windows and OS/2 upgrades
  102.       during promotional period?  What proof do I need to provide?
  103.  
  104.  A13: Actual proof of purchase or the original first page of the
  105.       operating manual. (More detail to come.)

  109.  Q14: IBM must have invested heavily in the development of
  110.       OS/2 2.0.  How much did you spend?
  111.  
  112.  A14: Development costs are proprietary.  (Note:  If responding to
  113.       WSJ article, $2.5 billion was grossly exaggerated.)

  115.  Q15: Does IBM expect OS/2 2.0 to be a big revenue producer?
  116.  
  117.  A15: We believe OS/2 2.0 will be a success in the
  118.       marketplace.
  119.  
  120.  Q16: Are you looking at different ways of marketing OS/2 2.0
  121.       in the channels?  For instance, will you be selling it
  122.       direct?
  123.  
  124.  A16: Our goal is to make OS/2 available everywhere DOS is
  125.       available.  We will be selling OS/2 2.0 in ways that
  126.       reach our target audiences.  Our preferred delivery channel
  127.       is through our business partners (retailers and dealers).
  128.       However, we will also be selling OS/2 2.0 through catalogs,
  129.       800# ordering and IBM direct marketing force.

  131.  Q17: How much are you spending altogether in advertising/
  132.       promotion?
  133.  
  134.  A17: Our promotional budget is proprietary.  However, let me
  135.       emphasize that we have established a far-reaching
  136.       campaign.  In fact, it will be one of our largest worldwide
  137.       ad investments for an IBM product this year.

  139.  Q18: Will you be doing any TV advertisements?
  140.  
  141.  A18: We have a hard-hitting print effort planned, however, we
  142.       are certainly exploring additional media.

  144.  Q19: Who is your advertising target audience?
  145.  
  146.  A19: We are targeting our traditional customers as well as
  147.       PC end users.  We have an aggressive effort aimed at a
  148.       comprehensive audience.

  150.  ISVs/OEMs
  151.  
  152.  Q20: How many ISV applications are currently ready to run on
  153.       OS/2 2.0?
  154.  
  155.  A20: We have more than 1,000 ISVs who have committed to
  156.       deliver 32-bit applications by the end of the year.
  157.       A substantial number of these applications are slated for
  158.       2Q and 3Q.
  159.  
  160.  Q21: Have you funded any of the ISVs development efforts?
  161.  
  162.  A21: We have a handful of joint development agreements -- all
  163.       sound business decisions -- which we feel will result in a
  164.       satisfactory return to IBM.  We are not "bankrolling"
  165.       anyone.

  167.  Q22: How does your OEM arrangement work?
  168.  
  169.  A22: As part of IBM's intention to support OEM 386 or 486 PC
  170.       platforms, the company will work with all users who may
  171.       experience compatibility issues in their first three months
  172.       of use and, if a resolution is not possible, the user will
  173.       be reimbursed for the cost of OS/2 2.0.
  174.  
  175.       IBM also intends to offer IBM OS/2 2.0, Extended Services
  176.       for OS/2, LAN Server 2.0 and Toolkits to OEMs that want to
  177.       deliver the new software with their personal computers.
  178.  
  179.  Q23: Do you think you'll be successful in getting OEMs to
  180.       pre-load OS/2 2.0 on their systems?
  181.  
  182.  A23: Yes.  IBM's intent is to support all 386 and above machines
  183.       that are PC compatible.  As such, we are testing hundreds of
  184.       OEM machines to insure that OS/2 2.0 will work.  IBM
  185.       maintains a list of supported OEM machine models which will
  186.       be periodically updated as more machines are tested for OS/2
  187.       compatibility.

  189.       At present, OS/2 has been tested successfully on most of the
  190.       major PC brands, including:  Compaq, Tandy, Dell, AST,
  191.       Zenith, Packard Bell, Epson, Toshiba and over 30 others.

  193.  Q24: Of your beta customers how many have committed to purchasing
  194.       2.0?
  195.  
  196.  A24: Response from beta users has been overwhelmingly positive.
  197.       Many are OS/2 1.3 customers already and therefore will
  198.       receive a free upgrade to 2.0.  Our Limited Availability
  199.       (LA) customers have made significant purchase commitments to
  200.       OS/2 2.0.

  202.  Networking
  203.  
  204.  Q25: When will LAN Server 2.0 be generally available?
  205.  
  206.  A25: OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 will be available on April 10.
  207.  
  208.  Q26: What is IBM's LAN strategy for OS/2 -- in terms of LAN
  209.       Server, database and communications server
  210.       capabilities?
  211.  
  212.  A26: OS/2 is an industrial strength platform designed to provide
  213.       PC users with the broadest choices in the industry today for
  214.       networking in small, intermediate and large businesses.
  215.       IBM's networking strategy for OS/2 begins with the base
  216.       operating system itself -- with its LAN-aware shell and
  217.       multitasking capabilities so suitable for taking advantage
  218.       of rich network resources.
  219.  
  220.       LAN Server 2.0 combines industry-leading function for OS/2,
  221.       DOS and Windows clients in terms of administering LAN
  222.       resources, such as applications, files and print.
  223.  
  224.       Extended Services offers a powerful LAN client/server
  225.       database option (DDCS) that allows DOS, OS/2 and Windows
  226.       clients to tap into much larger network databases through a
  227.       single server on a LAN.
  228.  
  229.  Q27: LAN Server has been viewed as a poor performer.  What
  230.       are the number of LAN Servers running on OS/2 2.0?
  231.  
  232.  A27: We have run additional testing to show that the performance
  233.       of LAN Server 2.0 is 2.5 times faster than LAN Server 1.3,
  234.       depending on workload characteristics.  It is extremely
  235.       competitive in OS/2 environments.
  236.  
  237.  Q28: How does IBM expect to exert leadership with OS/2 as a
  238.       networking platform without TCP/IP support?
  239.  
  240.  A28: OS/2 2.0 has very strong TCP/IP internetworking capabilities
  241.       through TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2 2.0 clients.  (TCP/IP
  242.       Version 2.0 supports DOS and Windows users.)  TCP/IP Version
  243.       1.2 provides OS/2 PCs with both client and server access to
  244.       AIX and UNIX workstations, as well as to X.25 packet
  245.       switching wide area networks and to X-windows engineering
  246.       graphics.
  247.  
  248.  Q29: How many clients can be maintained at one time with LAN
  249.       Server 2.0?
  250.  
  251.  A29: There is no limit to clients on a single server, however, a
  252.       reasonable maximum would be the Token-Ring standard of 260
  253.       clients per server on a ring.
  254.  
  255.  Q30: How does OS/2 work with NetView?
  256.  
  257.  A30: OS/2 sends alerts to NetView through its communications
  258.       manager capability, now a part of Extended Services.  These
  259.       alerts will be enhanced over time but focus today on
  260.       problems arising in network communication and in resource
  261.       sharing.  LAN Management Utilities/2 provides NetView with
  262.       information on LAN utilization and configuration and helps
  263.       NetView perform functions such as server recovery.
  264.  
  265.  Q31: I've heard from early customers that installing
  266.       Extended Services is a mammoth undertaking.  Is this
  267.       true?  Will you fix it?
  268.  
  269.  A31: While IBM views Extended Services installability as
  270.       acceptable today, never the less it will continue to hone
  271.       the install procedure making it easier for end users for the
  272.       future.
  273.  Q32: How does your recent networking announcement on APPN affect
  274.       OS/2 2.0?
  275.  
  276.  A32: OS/2 2.0 provides high performance in APPN support through
  277.       Extended Services.  Advanced-Peer-to-Peer Networking, or
  278.       APPN, is an industry-leading networking infrastructure for
  279.       client/server distributed application -- providing great
  280.       flexibility for network reconfigurations as well as
  281.       robustness for the high bandwidth transmissions.

  283.  Taligent/PINK
  284.  
  285.  Q33: With the formation of Taligent, is IBM still committed
  286.       to OS/2 2.0?
  287.  
  288.  A33: Yes.  We plan to protect our customers' investment in
  289.       OS/2 by providing OS/2 application support in the new
  290.       object oriented environment should our customers
  291.       desire to move to that environment.
  292.  
  293.  Q34: Should I just wait for Taligent and continue writing
  294.       Windows applications?
  295.  
  296.  A34: Absolutely not.  You're missing a great opportunity if you
  297.       don't exploit the capabilities of OS/2 2.0 now.  The
  298.       application benefits you can achieve today with OS/2 2.0 far
  299.       surpass what can be gained by other existing 32-bit
  300.       Intel-based operating systems.
  301.  
  302.  Q35: What stages will take place in a transition from OS/2
  303.       to Taligent?  What guidance would you give developers
  304.       today?
  305.  
  306.  A35: OS/2 will continue to be enhanced in the '90s.
  307.       Extensions to support multimedia, pen and tablet based
  308.       applications distributed computing (e.g., DCE) will be
  309.       added.  Portability to non-Intel platforms is also planned
  310.       as is the ability to run OS/2 applications within the
  311.       Taligent environment.

  313.  Microsoft/Windows 3.1
  314.  
  315.  Q36: Bill Gates was quoted recently as saying that
  316.       concerning OS/2 2.0, IBM "may have promised more than
  317.       [it] can deliver."  Is he correct and can you deliver a
  318.       better Windows than Windows?
  319.  
  320.  A36: We are fully confident that we will be delivering
  321.       everything that was promised for OS/2 2.0.  First of
  322.       all, this system contains much more functionality than
  323.       was outlined in April 1991.  In fact the performance we
  324.       detailed at that time was met in our LA code last
  325.       December.  Secondly, IBM is delivering what its customers
  326.       and ISVs have asked for -- a more crash-protected
  327.       environment under 2.0.
  328.  
  329.  Q37: Do you view Microsoft as a direct competitor in the OS
  330.       arena?
  331.  
  332.  A37: Absolutely.  We are direct competitors in operating systems
  333.       for the desktop.  On the applications side, our strategy is
  334.       inclusive.  We want to embrace users of DOS and Windows
  335.       programs and have them  run these applications in a more
  336.       stable environment -- OS/2.
  337.  
  338.  Q38: Will you incorporate NT technology into OS/2?
  339.  
  340.  A38: NT is not a currently available product.  We have the rights
  341.       to NT technology.  However, most of the function that NT
  342.       will have is in OS/2 2.0.  We bring that function to OS/2
  343.       2.0 users today whereas NT is due sometime in 1993.

  345.  Enterprise
  346.  
  347.  Q39: What is the role of OS/2 2.0 in an enterprise
  348.       environment?
  349.  
  350.  A39: OS/2 2.0 provides an industrial strength operating
  351.       system platform that provides the user with single
  352.       workstation access to personal productivity
  353.       applications, LAN based workgroup applications, and
  354.       host-based enterprise applications. In essence, OS/2
  355.       2.0 provides the user with an entree into the total
  356.       enterprise.  OS/2 2.0 also provides a high performance
  357.       platform for LAN server applications.
  358.  
  359.  Q40: How does OS/2 2.0 support SAA applications?
  360.  
  361.  A40: OS/2 2.0 is the most advanced open workstation
  362.       environment.  The OS/2 2.0 workplace shell conforms to
  363.       the '91 object-oriented user interface. OS/2
  364.       2.0 also enables customer or vendor developed CUA '91
  365.       applications.  With the addition of OS/2 Extended
  366.       Services, OS/2 2.0 provides an SAA conforming
  367.       relational database manager and extensive SAA CCS local
  368.       area network and wide area communications connectivity.
  369.       SAA CPI programming languages and services are
  370.       supported on OS/2 2.0 with selected compilers offering
  371.       32-bit support.  OS/2 2.0 also provides the workstation
  372.       base for SAA cooperative applications.
  373.  
  374.  Q41: How does OS/2 2.0 participate in an open systems
  375.       environment?
  376.  
  377.  A41: OS/2 2.0 with OS/2 Extended Services and/or OS/2 LAN
  378.       Server offers a wide variety of industry and
  379.       international standards for both client/server and wide
  380.       area network environments.  This allows customers to
  381.       incorporate OS/2 based workstations and servers in a
  382.       broad range of multi-vendor system environments.

  384.  Q42: OS/2 Extended Edition had been designated as the SAA
  385.       workstation environment?  What is the impact of the
  386.       repackaging of OS/2?
  387.  
  388.  A42: OS/2 2.0 with OS/2 Extended Services 1.0 (ES) is the
  389.       successor to OS/2 EE except it doesn't include OS/2 LAN
  390.       Requester.  The combination of both programs provides the
  391.       full complement of SAA function.  Distributed Data
  392.       Connection Services/2 (DDCS/2) is required on a workstation
  393.       client or LAN server to access remote SAA host-based
  394.       relational database managers.

  396.  Q43: The OS/2 Workplace Shell differs in some respects with
  397.       the CUA guidelines?  Do you plan to correct these
  398.       differences?
  399.  
  400.  A43: While there are some minor differences, the OS/2 2.0
  401.       Workplace Shell is CUA compliant.  CUA is a set of
  402.       guidelines for both environments and applications alike.
  403.       The Workplace Shell, an implementation of the CUA
  404.       architecture, provides a platform which allows users to run
  405.       existing applications, while providing significant potential
  406.       for future object oriented applications.
  407.  
  408.       The OS/2 Workplace Shell and CUA will both evolve over time.
  409.       Customer experience will be a key factor.  IBM will continue
  410.       to ensure the highest degree of consistency possible, while
  411.       providing the most usable solution for our customers.
