BUMPS.BMP and PASTEL.BMP are two images that are designed to be used as
background images for the OS/2 desktop. They are non-obtrusive (you can still
read your icon text with either of these in use, for example) and they make
the Workplace Shell a bit more interesting to look at.
BUMPS.BMP is an 800x600 image generated in the Imagine raytracer on an Amiga
computer. The texture itself is "Bumps", an altitude map included with the
Essence package of textures by Steve Worley. BUMPS works best if you use an
800x600 desktop and tell OS/2 to tile the image.
PASTEL.BMP is a piece of a backdrop created using the Art Department
Professional's BACKDROP loader, which lets you build nice looking gradients
between any series of colours. It's colours are all about the same intensity,
with varying hue, making it a good colourful backdrop. You could probably also
use it to convince people that your monitor is broken. PASTEL's edges meet up
seamlessly so using it as a tiled backdrop gives you a very smooth desktop.
Creating backdrops for OS/2 turned out to be more challenging than I had
thought. While OS/2 2.1's video drivers support the Palette Manager, the
Workplace Shell doesn't go out of it's way to change the hardware palette to
make your backdrops look nice. What I did was take a JPEG image I had, map
it to the system colours using PMJPEG, save it as a GIF, loaded the GIF into
ADPro and locked the palette, and then told ADPro to map my pictures to that
palette. ADPro does a much better job of rendering an image with a fixed
palette than the Workplace Shell does!
