Frank LLoyd Wright's house for William Winslow 1894 River Forest, IL.
This house represents Wright's first independent commision after leaving the firm of Adler
and Sullivan. Though simple and elegant by todays standards this house was the subject of
great ridicule scorn by its neighbors. The huge, almost monolithic roof and the tall
limestone copings sharply contrasted with the delicate multi roofed victorians common to
the area. Winslow anticipates the soon to appear 'Prairie House' in many details. In
particular, the way the second story windows rise all the way to the very broad eaves.
The eaves are light colored sand plaster to reduce the darkening effect of the large over
hangs.
The primary building material is tan roman brick. Texture is added combining stone and
plaster. The band around the second story windows is finely detailed plaster that once had
a very light hue. The paint applied in later years hides the Sullivanesque beauty of the pattern.
Polished limestone is used in the entry, copings, and belting courses.
This picture shows Winslow as thousands of other photographers have shown it. From the front on.
Most other angles would require significant trespassing. It is a spring day in 1994 with
overcast skies and budding trees.
