A few bitmaps showing my desktop setup that will hopefully provide ideas
for beginers and experts alike.
The following files should be included in the Zip file:
- Read.me
- desktop1.bmp
- desktop2.bmp
- desktop3.bmp
- desktop4.bmp
- button1.bmp
- button2.bmp
- button3.bmp
- button4.bmp
- button5.bmp
The bitmaps provided are 'snapshots' of my desktop, and they are all 256 colour.
The desktop bitmaps are in 1024x768 resolution. If you do not have a bitmap viewer
just put them in your \os2\bitmap\ directory and view them as a background.
The 'button' bitmaps are to be used as tiled background bitmaps.
Everything that you see is done entirely with OS/2 2.1 without the aid of any utilities!
This is a tribute to the WPS's customizability (is this a word?) and anything of this
sort would be impossible with Windoze without dishing out for third party utilities
and if then.
I will not get into the details of how I setup up this desktop, but I will
briefly explain what it does.
(Hope you have one of the desktop bitmaps as your background)
The single column toolbar on the right-hand-side is my main menu, some
of the icons don't really make sense but I Know what they mean and they
look cool. (Most are 40x40x256, downloadable from good OS/2 BBS's)
From top to bottom they are:
System Setup - various OS/2 setup utilities.
OS/2 Utilities - various utility programs.
Minimized Viewer - all applications that are minimized.
Communications - various comm programs.
Publishing - word-processors, editors and such.
Finance - spread-sheets, personal finance, etc..
Graphics - graphics related programs.
Multimedia - mm related stuff
Games - duh?
Programming - C++,basic etc..
Information - Generally inf files but any information and help too.
Projects - all important folder. Usually keep anything I am
working on in this folder, like this.
This is my preference of a main menu and everyone I'm sure has their own.
Now what happens when you click on one of these icons is that a folder
on the left side of the screen shows with icons pertaining to your
selection. The left side 'toolbars' should all be open constantly,
completely overlapping eachother, so as to provide quick access.
The top toolbar is obvious, is provides access to all drives and drive
utilities.
The bottom toolbar is used for slightly different purposes, mainly for
draging and dropping. There is a shredder, blackhole, printers, fax, bbsfiles,
unzip, trash, the joker(?) and templates for creating often used objects.
For instance to delete a file drag onto the trashcan, which is really only
a folder, and undelete it by dragging it out of the trashcan. To create a
new directory drag the folder template to one of your drives, directories
or toolbars and drop it. To create a program object drag the program
template to a tool bar and drop it.To unzip a file drop a zip file on the
unzip icon and presto, it is unzipped into the source directory.
etc...
I hope you enjoy these bmp's and any questions, comments, suggestions and
tips are welcome. I frequent the Toronto IBM OS/2 BBS and the Atlanta OS/2 BBS.
Sincerely,
Peter Conteos
