  13. ABOUT THE TRAIN TRACKS 1.0 FONT: 
  14.     This font is a virtual railroad for your printer.  You will need a 
  15. high resolution printer to truly appreciate this font.  The screen 
  16. image isn't the best, but load up the PostScript font and print out a 
  17. copy of "TRKS_MAP.WRI" to see all the living detail in full heart 
  18. stopping color (well, I get carried away, but you get the idea).  Now 
  19. you can add the finest train yards to your documents.
  20.  
  21.     There are two sets of tracks, with ties (for the formal 
  22. railroader) and with out (for the casual railroader).  Almost 
  23. everybody who has seen this font has said:
  24.     - Hey, what about vertical segments?
  25.     - Hey, what about roads?
  26.     - Hey, what about buildings?
  27.     To which I say, all in due time.  Unfortunately, when I figured 
  28. out the geometry for the fonts, I forgot to make the length to width 
  29. ratio an integer.  WOOPS!  I don't want to go back and do all of those 
  30. ties again (the frogs were the worst).  So, one of these days I will 
  31. either hack some vertical segments together or I will start from 
  32. scratch and do it right.  As for roadways, I wanted to add those 
  33. before this release, but I ran out of time.  So, those will come with 
  34. the next version.  Same story for the buildings.  In the mean time, 
  35. Enjoy! (can't wait to see the snarls you make out of this (grin))

  53. IMPORTANT STUFF:

  55. SOME CHARACTERS MAY BE TOO DETAILED TO SHOW ON THE SCREEN 
  56. and will appear as empty boxes.  They may still print okay though.

  66. ABOUT THE IBM VERSIONS:
  67.     Yeah, I am a Mac head.  I am slowly learning all I can about the 
  68. IBM systems.  I am also enlisting the help of my IBM friends as 
  69. "consultants".  This might be a bumpy road at first, but these fonts 
  70. are pretty neat and they are worth the trek.  From my end, I am 
  71. more than willing to work with you to get the fonts to work on your 
  72. machine.  On your end, I ask for patience if they don't work on the 
  73. first try.  Please let me know ASAP if you are having any problems.  
  74. I am willing to do minor changes or generate bit map files for DOS 
  75. users as much as my time will permit.  Let me know what you want 
  76. or need and we'll work something out.

  78. TRUE TYPE vs. POST SCRIPT:
  79.     On some machines, not all characters of the True Type font will 
  80. be visible.  Please don't lose heart, they are there and should print 
  81. okay, it is just the fact that there are so many points in the character 
  82. that windows decided you don't really need to see it.  I will try to fix 
  83. this in later versions.  If the True Type font gives you problems, try 
  84. the Post Script version, it seems to be a little more stable.  Note that 
  85. the contents of both fonts are the same.

  88. HOW TO INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT TRAIN FONT ON WINDOWS:
  89.     You will need WINDOWS 3.0 or later and/or the ADOBE TYPE 
  90. MANAGER (ATM) version 2.0 or later.
  91. 1) Start the ATM control panel by double clicking on it.
  92. 2) Click the Add button
  93. 3) Locate the drive/directory containing your fonts using the scroll 
  94. bars
  95. 4) Double click on the drive/directory to show the names of the fonts 
  96. on the disk
  97. 5) Select the fonts to install
  98. 6) Click the Add button
  99. 7) Exit ATM (you may have to restart windows to use the fonts, 
  100. depending on the version of ATM you have)
  101.  
  102. WINDOWS TRUE TYPE TIP:
  103.     If a complex True Type font fails to print, you may be able to 
  104. solve the problem by changing the OutlineThreshold setting in the 
  105. [True Type] section of your Windows WIN.INI file.  The default 
  106. setting is 256 (pixels per em (if you don't know, don't worry)) and 
  107. has a range of 0-300.  If you change it to 70 (i.e., 
  108. OutlineThreshold=70), the True Type font might print.  The price of 
  109. this improvement may be a slower print speed.  As I understand it, 
  110. by lowering the OutlineThreshold, you are decreasing the amount of 
  111. memory needed to print the fonts.
  112.     You may also want to consult your Windows documentation.  If 
  113. you do find a clever fix for rendering my complex fonts, please let 
  114. me know and I will pass the word on to other IBM users.
  115.  
  116.     IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES installing this font or it doesn't seem to 
  117. print out correctly, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as soon as possible.  I can 
  118. either give you more specific instillation information or go and fix 
  119. the bug.  (e-mail is great for this, but snail mail works fine too)

  121.     If you use this font in publication or on a product, please let me 
  122. know.  It is always interesting to hear the clever uses people have 
  123. had for my fonts.  (I would also love a copy of your publication for 
  124. my scrap book)

  127. NOW FOR THE "ASKING FOR MONEY" BIT, AKA, THIS IS SHAREWARE:
  128.     You are free to use (play with, throw at the cat, etc.) this font 
  129. for one week after receiving it.  If you like it and decide to keep it, 
  130. you should send a US $10 "shareware" fee to myself at the address 
  131. below (for international users, see item 4 in "The Fine Print").  Please 
  132. include a brief note describing where you got this font, what you like 
  133. about it, and what you would like to see in the future.
  134.     If you just have to have the full collection of my train fonts 
  135. (see "Product Ad"), send a couple of FORMATTED 3.5" HD disks (Two 
  136. HD for Mac, or One HD for IBM recommended) and a SELF ADDRESSED 
  137. STAMPED ENVELOPE to the address below. (I hate to format disks 
  138. and you will be sure to get the right machine, Mac or IBM, this way)
  139.     I do not want to send any of my customers into bankruptcy, if 
  140. you are honestly poor, (i.e., you ain't gonna support the American 
  141. way and my education) please send a post card (the weirder the 
  142. better) describing where you got this font, what you like about it and 
  143. what you would like to see added to it.

  145. THE FINE PRINT:
  146. -Each font or icon package is an individual product.  Thus, if you 
  147. keep Passenger Font and Freight Font, you should pay $20, not $10.
  148.  
  149. -You may NOT use this font in any publication or any product unless 
  150. you register your copy by sending $10 FOR EACH FONT YOU USE.  Be 
  151. sure to specify which fonts you are registering for.  It is not fair for 
  152. you to make money off of my hard work without paying the 
  153. Shareware fees.
  154.  
  155. -If you decide to keep several of my shareware products and you are 
  156. only using them for personal applications (or you are using them for 
  157. a struggling NONPROFIT organization promoting railroads), then $10 
  158. a piece can get to be a bit expensive.  Please pay what you think they 
  159. are worth.  I recommend $10 for the first font and $5 for each 
  160. additional font.

  162. -If you do not reside in the US, then getting a check in US$ may be 
  163. difficult for you.  So, I will also accept any interesting widgets, toys, 
  164. books, time tables, postcards or what not.  What's common place to 
  165. you is quite possibly exotic for me.  By the way, I'm a rail fan (hint 
  166. hint hint)

  168. -You may distribute this font for free, however, you may not sell this 
  169. font or include it in any package for sale without the written 
  170. permission of myself, Benn Coifman.  I am very agreeable to CD 
  171. ROM's and shareware packages for sale, however, I do want to retain 
  172. some degree of control over my work.  So, please contact me first.

  178. WHY SHOULD YOU SEND IN THE SHAREWARE FEE?
  179.     Well, I am releasing this font in it's entirety.  I put a lot of hard 
  180. work into this font.  I have also gotten a lot of pleasure from it.  
  181. Ignoring all of the capitalistic angles, your shareware dollar will 
  182. speed up the development of new train fonts and help me afford 
  183. new font tools.  My goal is to at least break even.
  184.     Only 39 people have registered my shareware products since I 
  185. first released them ten months ago.  There are a lot of expenses that 
  186. go into these fonts.  My font editor cost almost $300.  Then there are 
  187. the little expenses like ink cartridges (you wouldn't believe how 
  188. many ink cartridges I go through) and paying for a mail box.  Oy!  
  189. And you want to talk about memory... 40 Meg of hard disk devoted 
  190. to fonts and icon development.
  191.     I would love to purchase the latest version of Illustrator and 
  192. produce more clip art.  I could also use more disk space to keep these 
  193. toys in.

  196. BENEFITS OF PAYING THE SHAREWARE FEE:
  197.     Enough of what shareware fees do for me, what will they do for 
  198. you!?  I will spend less time on school and more time on producing 
  199. shareware.  You will also be entitled to a peek into things to come.  If 
  200. you send a disk (or two) along with your payment, I will give the 
  201. Demo font that includes all of the odd characters that haven't quite 
  202. found a home yet (including a number of steam engines!).  In 
  203. addition, I will rush you out the most recent versions of my fonts 
  204. and icons.  I might even toss in a couple of pre-release fonts.
