  12. ABOUT THE RAILROAD HERALDS 1.2 FONT:
  13.     This font is a Collection of railroad heralds (logos).  You will 
  14. need a high resolution printer to truly appreciate theses fonts.  The 
  15. screen image isn't the best, but load up the PostScript font and print 
  16. out a copy of "RRH_MAP.WRI" to see all the living detail in full heart 
  17. stopping color (well, I get carried away, but you get the idea).
  18.  
  19.     Right after I upgraded to my new font editor, I sat down and 
  20. started fiddling around with it.  Next thing I knew, I was half way to 
  21. having a Great Northern herald.  I borrowed a few letters from one 
  22. of the fonts that came with my Mac and completed my first herald.  I 
  23. very pleased with myself.  Though, there was no way I could release 
  24. something like that, I was using someone else's font within my own.  
  25. So, I took it upon myself to learn how to make a real alphabet.  
  26. Needless to say, I have relettered the GN logo about three times now 
  27. (each time using my own font).  I think I finally got it right.  Next I 
  28. made the Milwaukee Road herald.  I was learning more and more 
  29. about lettering.  It was about this time that I began work on Railroad 
  30. Roman.  That was it, I had jumped in head first.  I started to get real 
  31. fussy about the lettering in my heralds (yeah, I am a perfectionist, 
  32. but at least I can recognize my faults).  If you are even a passing rail 
  33. fan, you should recognize all but one of the heralds.  The last herald, 
  34. the diamond shaped one, is for Minneapolis Northfield and Southern.  
  35. A short line that had their main yard about a mile from my house 
  36. when I was growing up.  I spent many hours in that yard watching 
  37. them switch trains.  The MN&S has since been taken over by the Soo 
  38. Line and the yard has been torn up.  Now the Soo has been absorbed 
  39. into their parent, Canadian Pacific.  Ah, progress.

  41. WORKTRAIN:
  42.     Just a little bonus I tossed in to make the initial heralds 
  43. package more attractive.  This font contains a small collection of 
  44. speeders (little gas powered vehicles used to haul work crews and 
  45. inspection crews to remote sections of the railroad), hand cars (what 
  46. the railroads used before speeders) and other work equipment.  
  47. These are some more toys to augment my other rail fonts.  I am sure 
  48. that there are a few speeder owners out there who will love this 
  49. font.

  52.     I have doubled the number of heralds and added five new cars 
  53. to the WorkTrain font.  Added .AFM files for OS/2 and Unix users.

  68. 1.0    The original
  69. 1.2    Added AT&SF, WP, IC, B&M and Soo Line.  Reassigned the 
  70. characters to new keys (old assignments are still valid in this release, 
  71. but may not be in future versions).  Also added a number of cars to 
  72. the WorkTrain font.  Removed Burlington Font from the package.  Oh, 
  73. and made the documentation infinitely better.  Added .AFM files for 
  74. OS/2 and Unix users

  90. SOME CHARACTERS MAY BE TOO DETAILED TO SHOW ON THE SCREEN 
  91. and will appear as empty boxes.  They may still print okay though. 
  92. (See Windows True Type tip below)

  94. DO NOT INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT and TRUE TYPE VERSIONS AT THE 
  95. SAME TIME

  97. THE TRUE TYPE FONT MAY NOT WORK ON ALL SYSTEMS, THE POST 
  98. SCRIPT (ATM) FONT IS PREFERRED.

  101. ABOUT THE IBM VERSIONS:
  102.     Yeah, I am a Mac head.  I am slowly learning all I can about the 
  103. IBM systems.  I am also enlisting the help of my IBM friends as 
  104. "consultants".  This might be a bumpy road at first, but these fonts 
  105. are pretty neat and they are worth the trek.  From my end, I am 
  106. more than willing to work with you to get the fonts to work on your 
  107. machine.  On your end, I ask for patience if they don't work on the 
  108. first try.  Please let me know ASAP if you are having any problems.  
  109. I am willing to do minor changes or generate bit map files for DOS 
  110. users as much as my time will permit.  Let me know what you want 
  111. or need and we'll work something out.

  113. TRUE TYPE vs. POST SCRIPT:
  114.     On some machines, not all characters of the True Type font will 
  115. be visible.  Please don't lose heart, they are there and should print 
  116. okay, it is just the fact that there are so many points in the character 
  117. that windows decided you don't really need to see it.  I will try to fix 
  118. this in later versions.  If the True Type font gives you problems, try 
  119. the Post Script version, it seems to be a little more stable.  Note that 
  120. the contents of both fonts are the same.

  123. HOW TO INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT TRAIN FONT ON WINDOWS:
  124.     You will need WINDOWS 3.0 or later and/or the ADOBE TYPE 
  125. MANAGER (ATM) version 2.0 or later.
  126. 1) Start the ATM control panel by double clicking on it.
  127. 2) Click the Add button
  128. 3) Locate the drive/directory containing your fonts using the scroll 
  129. bars
  130. 4) Double click on the drive/directory to show the names of the fonts 
  131. on the disk
  132. 5) Select the fonts to install
  133. 6) Click the Add button
  134. 7) Exit ATM (you may have to restart windows to use the fonts, 
  135. depending on the version of ATM you have)
  136.  
  137. WINDOWS TRUE TYPE TIP:
  138.     If a complex True Type font fails to print, you may be able to 
  139. solve the problem by changing the OutlineThreshold setting in the 
  140. [True Type] section of your Windows WIN.INI file.  The default 
  141. setting is 256 (pixels per em (if you don't know, don't worry)) and 
  142. has a range of 0-300.  If you change it to 70 (i.e., 
  143. OutlineThreshold=70), the True Type font might print.  The price of 
  144. this improvement may be a slower print speed.  As I understand it, 
  145. by lowering the OutlineThreshold, you are decreasing the amount of 
  146. memory needed to print the fonts.
  147.     You may also want to consult your Windows documentation.  If 
  148. you do find a clever fix for rendering my complex fonts, please let 
  149. me know and I will pass the word on to other IBM users.
  150.  
  151.     IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES installing this font or it doesn't seem to 
  152. print out correctly, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as soon as possible.  I can 
  153. either give you more specific instillation information or go and fix 
  154. the bug.  (e-mail is great for this, but snail mail works fine too)

  156.     If you use this font in publication or on a product, please let me 
  157. know.  It is always interesting to hear the clever uses people have 
  158. had for my fonts.  (I would also love a copy of your publication for 
  159. my scrap book)

  162. NOW FOR THE "ASKING FOR MONEY" BIT, AKA, THIS IS SHAREWARE:
  163.     You are free to use (play with, throw at the cat, etc.) this font 
  164. for one week after receiving it.  If you like it and decide to keep it, 
  165. you should send a US $10 "shareware" fee to myself at the address 
  166. below (for international users, see item 4 in "The Fine Print").  Please 
  167. include a brief note describing where you got this font, what you like 
  168. about it, and what you would like to see in the future.
  169.     If you just have to have the full collection of my train fonts 
  170. (see "Product Ad"), send a couple of FORMATTED 3.5" HD disks (Two 
  171. HD for Mac, or One HD for IBM recommended) and a SELF ADDRESSED 
  172. STAMPED ENVELOPE to the address below. (I hate to format disks 
  173. and you will be sure to get the right machine, Mac or IBM, this way)
  174.     I do not want to send any of my customers into bankruptcy, if 
  175. you are honestly poor, (i.e., you ain't gonna support the American 
  176. way and my education) please send a post card (the weirder the 
  177. better) describing where you got this font, what you like about it and 
  178. what you would like to see added to it.

  180. THE FINE PRINT:
  181. -Each font or icon package is an individual product.  Thus, if you 
  182. keep Passenger Font and Freight Font, you should pay $20, not $10.
  183.  
  184. -You may NOT use this font in any publication or any product unless 
  185. you register your copy by sending $10 FOR EACH FONT YOU USE.  Be 
  186. sure to specify which fonts you are registering for.  It is not fair for 
  187. you to make money off of my hard work without paying the 
  188. Shareware fees.
  189.  
  190. -If you decide to keep several of my shareware products and you are 
  191. only using them for personal applications (or you are using them for 
  192. a struggling NONPROFIT organization promoting railroads), then $10 
  193. a piece can get to be a bit expensive.  Please pay what you think they 
  194. are worth.  I recommend $10 for the first font and $5 for each 
  195. additional font.

  197. -If you do not reside in the US, then getting a check in US$ may be 
  198. difficult for you.  So, I will also accept any interesting widgets, toys, 
  199. books, time tables, postcards or what not.  What's common place to 
  200. you is quite possibly exotic for me.  By the way, I'm a rail fan (hint 
  201. hint hint)

  203. -You may distribute this font for free, however, you may not sell this 
  204. font or include it in any package for sale without the written 
  205. permission of myself, Benn Coifman.  I am very agreeable to CD 
  206. ROM's and shareware packages for sale, however, I do want to retain 
  207. some degree of control over my work.  So, please contact me first.

  213. WHY SHOULD YOU SEND IN THE SHAREWARE FEE?
  214.     Well, I am releasing this font in it's entirety.  I put a lot of hard 
  215. work into this font.  I have also gotten a lot of pleasure from it.  
  216. Ignoring all of the capitalistic angles, your shareware dollar will 
  217. speed up the development of new train fonts and help me afford 
  218. new font tools.  My goal is to at least break even.
  219.     Only 39 people have registered my shareware products since I 
  220. first released them ten months ago.  There are a lot of expenses that 
  221. go into these fonts.  My font editor cost almost $300.  Then there are 
  222. the little expenses like ink cartridges (you wouldn't believe how 
  223. many ink cartridges I go through) and paying for a mail box.  Oy!  
  224. And you want to talk about memory... 40 Meg of hard disk devoted 
  225. to fonts and icon development.
  226.     I would love to purchase the latest version of Illustrator and 
  227. produce more clip art.  I could also use more disk space to keep these 
  228. toys in.

  231. BENEFITS OF PAYING THE SHAREWARE FEE:
  232.     Enough of what shareware fees do for me, what will they do for 
  233. you!?  I will spend less time on school and more time on producing 
  234. shareware.  You will also be entitled to a peek into things to come.  If 
  235. you send a disk (or two) along with your payment, I will give the 
  236. Demo font that includes all of the odd characters that haven't quite 
  237. found a home yet (including a number of steam engines!).  In 
  238. addition, I will rush you out the most recent versions of my fonts 
  239. and icons.  I might even toss in a couple of pre-release fonts.
