  8. ABOUT RAILROAD ROMAN 1.1 FONT: 
  9.     A Roman font in the style of classic railroad lettering.  This font 
  10. was primarily designed for model railroaders; however, it turned out 
  11. to be an attractive title case for almost any document (all of the 
  12. rooms in my building at school are lettered in a variation of this 
  13. typeface).
  14.     After being dissatisfied with the spacing of the original version, 
  15. I have added a "Document" Railroad Roman that is intended for the 
  16. few folks out there who don't have model railroads.

  18. WHAT IS THIS FONT AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
  19.     This font is my first true alphabet font.  This is also the first 
  20. font that I had no intention of making.
  21.     When I first released my picture fonts a lot of people on the 
  22. net asked if they were Railroad Roman.  At that point, I had no idea 
  23. what Railroad Roman was... well, I knew, but not by name.  It was 
  24. clear that there was a demand for a Railroad Roman font.  I was 
  25. curious and kept asking people to send me a sample.  A number of 
  26. folks said they would get me a sample, but Larry Rose finally came 
  27. through for me (he has hand lettered a number of restored cars 
  28. down in southern California).  Like my first three fonts, I made this 
  29. font because I have a love of railroading.  If there proves to be a 
  30. demand for this font, I will continue to work on it and improve it.  
  31. Two improvements come to mind right away, kerning and the 
  32. addition of small "wiggles" to make it look a little more like hand 
  33. painted lettering.

  35.     What is that train doing on the MAP sheet?  That is a sample 
  36. from RailFreight.  I wanted to put in a couple of toys for those of you 
  37. who don't have my whole font collection.

  39. NEW WITH VERSION 1.1:
  40.     I didn't change the original Railroad Roman, but I added a 
  41. second version for those of us who aren't making decals and just 
  42. want to use Railroad Roman in documents.  I have also revised the 
  43. documentation.  Added .AFM files for OS/2 and Unix users.

  64. IMPORTANT STUFF:

  66. SOME CHARACTERS MAY BE TOO DETAILED TO SHOW ON THE SCREEN 
  67. and will appear as empty boxes.  They may still print okay though.

  70. DO NOT INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT and TRUE TYPE VERSIONS AT THE 
  71. SAME TIME

  73. THE TRUE TYPE FONT MAY NOT WORK ON ALL SYSTEMS, THE POST 
  74. SCRIPT (ATM) FONT IS PREFERRED.

  77. ABOUT THE IBM VERSIONS:
  78.     Yeah, I am a Mac head.  I am slowly learning all I can about the 
  79. IBM systems.  I am also enlisting the help of my IBM friends as 
  80. "consultants".  This might be a bumpy road at first, but these fonts 
  81. are pretty neat and they are worth the trek.  From my end, I am 
  82. more than willing to work with you to get the fonts to work on your 
  83. machine.  On your end, I ask for patience if they don't work on the 
  84. first try.  Please let me know ASAP if you are having any problems.  
  85. I am willing to do minor changes or generate bit map files for DOS 
  86. users as much as my time will permit.  Let me know what you want 
  87. or need and we'll work something out.

  89. TRUE TYPE vs. POST SCRIPT:
  90.     On some machines, not all characters of the True Type font will 
  91. be visible.  Please don't lose heart, they are there and should print 
  92. okay, it is just the fact that there are so many points in the character 
  93. that windows decided you don't really need to see it.  I will try to fix 
  94. this in later versions.  If the True Type font gives you problems, try 
  95. the Post Script version, it seems to be a little more stable.  Note that 
  96. the contents of both fonts are the same.

  99. HOW TO INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT TRAIN FONT ON WINDOWS:
  100.     You will need WINDOWS 3.0 or later and/or the ADOBE TYPE 
  101. MANAGER (ATM) version 2.0 or later.
  102. 1) Start the ATM control panel by double clicking on it.
  103. 2) Click the Add button
  104. 3) Locate the drive/directory containing your fonts using the scroll 
  105. bars
  106. 4) Double click on the drive/directory to show the names of the fonts 
  107. on the disk
  108. 5) Select the fonts to install
  109. 6) Click the Add button
  110. 7) Exit ATM (you may have to restart windows to use the fonts, 
  111. depending on the version of ATM you have)
  112.  
  113. WINDOWS TRUE TYPE TIP:
  114.     If a complex True Type font fails to print, you may be able to 
  115. solve the problem by changing the OutlineThreshold setting in the 
  116. [True Type] section of your Windows WIN.INI file.  The default 
  117. setting is 256 (pixels per em (if you don't know, don't worry)) and 
  118. has a range of 0-300.  If you change it to 70 (i.e., 
  119. OutlineThreshold=70), the True Type font might print.  The price of 
  120. this improvement may be a slower print speed.  As I understand it, 
  121. by lowering the OutlineThreshold, you are decreasing the amount of 
  122. memory needed to print the fonts.
  123.     You may also want to consult your Windows documentation.  If 
  124. you do find a clever fix for rendering my complex fonts, please let 
  125. me know and I will pass the word on to other IBM users.

  127.     IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES installing this font or it doesn't seem to 
  128. print out correctly, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as soon as possible.  I can 
  129. either give you more specific instillation information or go and fix 
  130. the bug.  (e-mail is great for this, but snail mail works fine too)

  132.     If you use this font in publication or on a product, please let me 
  133. know.  It is always interesting to hear the clever uses people have 
  134. had for my fonts.  (I would also love a copy of your publication for 
  135. my scrap book)

  138. NOW FOR THE "ASKING FOR MONEY" BIT, AKA, THIS IS SHAREWARE:
  139.     You are free to use (play with, throw at the cat, etc.) this font 
  140. for one week after receiving it.  If you like it and decide to keep it, 
  141. you should send a US $10 "shareware" fee to myself at the address 
  142. below (for international users, see item 4 in "The Fine Print").  Please 
  143. include a brief note describing where you got this font, what you like 
  144. about it, and what you would like to see in the future.
  145.     If you just have to have the full collection of my train fonts 
  146. (see "Product Ad"), send a couple of FORMATTED 3.5" HD disks (Two 
  147. HD for Mac, or One HD for IBM recommended) and a SELF ADDRESSED 
  148. STAMPED ENVELOPE to the address below. (I hate to format disks 
  149. and you will be sure to get the right machine, Mac or IBM, this way)
  150.     I do not want to send any of my customers into bankruptcy, if 
  151. you are honestly poor, (i.e., you ain't gonna support the American 
  152. way and my education) please send a post card (the weirder the 
  153. better) describing where you got this font, what you like about it and 
  154. what you would like to see added to it.

  156. THE FINE PRINT:
  157. -Each font or icon package is an individual product.  Thus, if you 
  158. keep Passenger Font and Freight Font, you should pay $20, not $10.
  159.  
  160. -You may NOT use this font in any publication or any product unless 
  161. you register your copy by sending $10 FOR EACH FONT YOU USE.  Be 
  162. sure to specify which fonts you are registering for.  It is not fair for 
  163. you to make money off of my hard work without paying the 
  164. Shareware fees.
  165.  
  166. -If you decide to keep several of my shareware products and you are 
  167. only using them for personal applications (or you are using them for 
  168. a struggling NONPROFIT organization promoting railroads), then $10 
  169. a piece can get to be a bit expensive.  Please pay what you think they 
  170. are worth.  I recommend $10 for the first font and $5 for each 
  171. additional font.

  173. -If you do not reside in the US, then getting a check in US$ may be 
  174. difficult for you.  So, I will also accept any interesting widgets, toys, 
  175. books, time tables, postcards or what not.  What's common place to 
  176. you is quite possibly exotic for me.  By the way, I'm a rail fan (hint 
  177. hint hint)

  179. -You may distribute this font for free, however, you may not sell this 
  180. font or include it in any package for sale without the written 
  181. permission of myself, Benn Coifman.  I am very agreeable to CD 
  182. ROM's and shareware packages for sale, however, I do want to retain 
  183. some degree of control over my work.  So, please contact me first.

  189. WHY SHOULD YOU SEND IN THE SHAREWARE FEE?
  190.     Well, I am releasing this font in it's entirety.  I put a lot of hard 
  191. work into this font.  I have also gotten a lot of pleasure from it.  
  192. Ignoring all of the capitalistic angles, your shareware dollar will 
  193. speed up the development of new train fonts and help me afford 
  194. new font tools.  My goal is to at least break even.
  195.     Only 39 people have registered my shareware products since I 
  196. first released them ten months ago.  There are a lot of expenses that 
  197. go into these fonts.  My font editor cost almost $300.  Then there are 
  198. the little expenses like ink cartridges (you wouldn't believe how 
  199. many ink cartridges I go through) and paying for a mail box.  Oy!  
  200. And you want to talk about memory... 40 Meg of hard disk devoted 
  201. to fonts and icon development.
  202.     I would love to purchase the latest version of Illustrator and 
  203. produce more clip art.  I could also use more disk space to keep these 
  204. toys in.

  207. BENEFITS OF PAYING THE SHAREWARE FEE:
  208.     Enough of what shareware fees do for me, what will they do for 
  209. you!?  I will spend less time on school and more time on producing 
  210. shareware.  You will also be entitled to a peek into things to come.  If 
  211. you send a disk (or two) along with your payment, I will give the 
  212. Demo font that includes all of the odd characters that haven't quite 
  213. found a home yet (including a number of steam engines!).  In 
  214. addition, I will rush you out the most recent versions of my fonts 
  215. and icons.  I might even toss in a couple of pre-release fonts.
