  1. This font was originally a Mac Postscript font was either 
  2. shareware or PD.  I have included in this zip some of the 
  3. original Mac or Pc docs which came with the unconverted font or 
  4. with a font originally created by the same author, if I could 
  5. find it.

  7. This documentation is not necessary for you to read to use this 
  8. font with Adobe Type Manager, though you might want to 
  9. contribute something to the indivual originally created the font.

  11. I converted these Mac fonts Postscript type 1 hinted fonts which 
  12. can be used with Adobe Type Manager for Windows on a pc.  I used 
  13. Corel Draw ver. 2.0 to convert these fonts to the Zsoft .Otl 
  14. format, and then used Zsoft's SoftType to create the hinted type 
  15. 1 Postscript format with both .pfb and .pfm files.

  35. QUICK START FOR WINDOWS USERS
  36.  
  37. To use this PostScript typeface with Windows you MUST have the
  38. MICROGRAFX PostScript Driver Version 2.1. Simply copy Heidelbe.pfa
  39. and Heidelbe.wfm to the directory you have told the MGX driver you
  40. keep your downloadable fonts in. On most systems this will be
  41. \psfonts. Next delete mgxps.fit from this same directory. Then
  42. launch Windows and gain access to the driver
  43. through PageMaker or control.exe. Either download Heidelbe to your
  44. printer or leave it's status as inline. Screen fonts will be
  45. substituted in by Windows. Next select Heidelbe so it appears in
  46. your list of typefaces and is shown as downloaded or inline. Start
  47. PageMaker and open the supplied publication called Heidelbe.pm3.
  48. It's a 7 page document and will show you how the characters are
  49. mapped above 125 along with two Postscript files using Heidelbe.
  50. Kerning examples are also provided along with character samples.
  51. At the very least you should keep the print out of page 1 for
  52. future reference since it tells you how to access these characters
  53. in PageMaker. If you try and print all 7 pages in one print job on
  54. some systems your print job may abort. Changing your transmission
  55. retry setting to 500 via control.exe may cure this problem. In
  56. that case print each page separately or select re-try. Some
  57. systems may experience better luck completing this 7 page print
  58. out if Heidelbe is selected as Inline....it's your choice.

  61. QUICK START FOR VENTURA PUBLISHER USERS
  62.  
  63. Copy Heidelbe.afm and Heidelbe.pfa to the directory you keep your
  64. PostScript fonts in. On most systems this will be c:\psfonts. If
  65. you want to check the location open postscpt.cnf which is in your
  66. Ventura directory. I have also enclosed Heidelbe.wid which assigns
  67. number 306 to Heidelbe. If this does not conflict with your system
  68. just copy it to your Ventura directory. If it does you will have
  69. to run afmtovfm and vfmtowid. Heidelbe.lst is also enclosed for
  70. just this purpose. After completing these steps you are ready to
  71. start VP and use Heidelbe. Screen fonts will be substituted in by
  72. VP.The choice of weather to use Heidelbe as download or resident
  73. is up to you. If you select resident then use the proper utility
  74. to download Heidelbe to your printer before you run VP. If you
  75. wish to see the mapping for the extended characters load
  76. charset.chp. Select Heidelbe as the font for this document and
  77. print it. Retain this 2 page print out for future reference.

  80. COREL DRAW USE

  82. A file called Heidelbe.afm is also provided for your use. One of
  83. it's uses is to allow you to convert Heidelbe for use with Corel
  84. Draw. Launch WFNBOSS and select Substitution and tell it where
  85. Heidelbe.afm is located and then convert it to CD's own .wfn
  86. format. If you try Readable PostScript by mistake WFNBOSS will not
  87. convert Heidelbe. Corel's WFNBOSS ONLY supports Fontographer
  88. Version 3.X generated fonts via Substitution. If you own other
  89. PostScript Type 3 faces created with Version 2.x of Fontographer
  90. you may use Readable PostScript for the conversion. Corel has
  91. promised to upgrade WFNBOSS to support Fontographer Version 3.x
  92. generated fonts via Readable PostScript in the not to distant
  93. future. Once the conversion is complete close WFNBOSS and launch
  94. CD. Heidelbe will appear as the last entry in the list of
  95. available typefaces. I use BANFF for a screen display. Please
  96. consult your Manuals if you need further help.

  98. DESIGN HISTORY

  100. Heidelbe was designed by Bill Horton of Santa Barbara CA. Bill has 
  101. been working with type for over 20 years and is very talented. The 
  102. name was shortened for DOS. Bill shares in the Shareware income 
  103. and has provided us with exclusive rights to distribute and 
  104. convert Heidelbe for the DOS platform. To view his work in 
  105. Fontographer is a joy. I have also set Heidelbe as a masthead for 
  106. a newspaper and used it with restraint for enlarged caps. It is a 
  107. splendid face for certificates and awards which looks it's best at 
  108. 2540 DPI. What follows are Bill's own words:

  110. In what might be called an evolutionary process, here is the font
  111. Heidelberg 89. It is what I consider to be a refinement to
  112. MacHumaine, though it is conceivable others may prefer the
  113. previous version.

  115. It is my feeling that Heidelberg is more truly a calligraphic
  116. style font than MacHumaine, with its more severe strokes and
  117. sharper angles. I have used it for certificates commercially and
  118. have had good comments only. I know there is a school of thought
  119. which believes it is improper to create a font that simulates
  120. actual pen or quill hand writing.

  137. If Heidelbe is output at higher resolutions than 300 DPI I would
  138. appreciate a sample. Knowing that Heidelbe is a well behaved font
  139. I am sure that it will be used with other applications that run
  140. from DOS as well as GEM and Windows.Please give me specifics in
  141. this area. Your thoughts are always welcome for future fine
  142. tuning.

  165. If you use Heidelbe and don't register it you won't help me much
  166. and certainly won't receive upgrades or future releases of other
  167. typefaces for Shareware evaluation. If and when the Type 1 specs
  168. become available and Altsys releases Metamorphis or any utility to
  169. better hint at low resolution and small point size registered
  170. users will get an upgrade at a nominal cost.

  172. COMMERCIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

  175. for large Electronic Publishing jobs as well as Consulting using
  176. Windows. If you desire a custom typeface or conversion of Type 3
  177. Fontographer faces from the MAC to the PC please contact me for
  178. specific quotes. It is the humble opinion of yours truly that
  179. Heidelbe is equal to or exceeds any Type 3 PostScript typeface
  180. available today. Many have suggested that we sell the face in the
  181. retail market like most other vendors and only release a
  182. "crippled" version for Shareware Evaluation. That's a subtle hint
  183. that I need YOUR support for continued success. If Shareware works
  184. then that's the way all future typefaces will be released and that
  185. is my preferred method at the present time. We currently have 11
  186. more PostScript typefaces under development.
