  7. ABOUT THE EMPIRE BUILDER 1.1 FONT:
  8.     This font was inspired by the lettering used by the Great 
  9. Northern Railway on their passenger trains from the late 40's 
  10. through the mid 60's.  Looking at this typeface, it is hard to believe 
  11. that it is at least 50 years old.  The Great Northern Pictorial Volume 
  12. 3, by John F. Strauss, Jr., was a great source of photographs to work 
  13. from.
  14.  
  15.     What is that train doing on the MAP sheet?  That is a sample 
  16. from RailPassenger.  I wanted to put in a couple of toys for those of 
  17. you who don't have my whole font collection.

  19. NEW WITH VERSION 1.1:
  20.     Well, um... nothin'.  Only two of my fonts were spared the 
  21. revisionist touch and this was one of them.  However, I did muck 
  22. about the documentation a fair bit.  Added .AFM file for OS/2 and 
  23. Unix users.

  43. IMPORTANT STUFF:

  45. SOME CHARACTERS MAY BE TOO DETAILED TO SHOW ON THE SCREEN 
  46. and will appear as empty boxes.  They may still print okay though. 
  47. (See Windows True Type tip below)

  49. DO NOT INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT and TRUE TYPE VERSIONS AT THE 
  50. SAME TIME

  52. THE TRUE TYPE FONT MAY NOT WORK ON ALL SYSTEMS, THE POST 
  53. SCRIPT (ATM) FONT IS PREFERRED.

  56. ABOUT THE IBM VERSIONS:
  57.     Yeah, I am a Mac head.  I am slowly learning all I can about the 
  58. IBM systems.  I am also enlisting the help of my IBM friends as 
  59. "consultants".  This might be a bumpy road at first, but these fonts 
  60. are pretty neat and they are worth the trek.  From my end, I am 
  61. more than willing to work with you to get the fonts to work on your 
  62. machine.  On your end, I ask for patience if they don't work on the 
  63. first try.  Please let me know ASAP if you are having any problems.  
  64. I am willing to do minor changes or generate bit map files for DOS 
  65. users as much as my time will permit.  Let me know what you want 
  66. or need and we'll work something out.

  68. TRUE TYPE vs. POST SCRIPT:
  69.     On some machines, not all characters of the True Type font will 
  70. be visible.  Please don't lose heart, they are there and should print 
  71. okay, it is just the fact that there are so many points in the character 
  72. that windows decided you don't really need to see it.  I will try to fix 
  73. this in later versions.  If the True Type font gives you problems, try 
  74. the Post Script version, it seems to be a little more stable.  Note that 
  75. the contents of both fonts are the same.

  78. HOW TO INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT TRAIN FONT ON WINDOWS:
  79.     You will need WINDOWS 3.0 or later and/or the ADOBE TYPE 
  80. MANAGER (ATM) version 2.0 or later.
  81. 1) Start the ATM control panel by double clicking on it.
  82. 2) Click the Add button
  83. 3) Locate the drive/directory containing your fonts using the scroll 
  84. bars
  85. 4) Double click on the drive/directory to show the names of the fonts 
  86. on the disk
  87. 5) Select the fonts to install
  88. 6) Click the Add button
  89. 7) Exit ATM (you may have to restart windows to use the fonts, 
  90. depending on the version of ATM you have)
  91.  
  92. WINDOWS TRUE TYPE TIP:
  93.     If a complex True Type font fails to print, you may be able to 
  94. solve the problem by changing the OutlineThreshold setting in the 
  95. [True Type] section of your Windows WIN.INI file.  The default 
  96. setting is 256 (pixels per em (if you don't know, don't worry)) and 
  97. has a range of 0-300.  If you change it to 70 (i.e., 
  98. OutlineThreshold=70), the True Type font might print.  The price of 
  99. this improvement may be a slower print speed.  As I understand it, 
  100. by lowering the OutlineThreshold, you are decreasing the amount of 
  101. memory needed to print the fonts.
  102.     You may also want to consult your Windows documentation.  If 
  103. you do find a clever fix for rendering my complex fonts, please let 
  104. me know and I will pass the word on to other IBM users.
  105.  
  106.     IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES installing this font or it doesn't seem to 
  107. print out correctly, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as soon as possible.  I can 
  108. either give you more specific instillation information or go and fix 
  109. the bug.  (e-mail is great for this, but snail mail works fine too)

  111.     If you use this font in publication or on a product, please let me 
  112. know.  It is always interesting to hear the clever uses people have 
  113. had for my fonts.  (I would also love a copy of your publication for 
  114. my scrap book)

  117. NOW FOR THE "ASKING FOR MONEY" BIT, AKA, THIS IS SHAREWARE:
  118.     You are free to use (play with, throw at the cat, etc.) this font 
  119. for one week after receiving it.  If you like it and decide to keep it, 
  120. you should send a US $10 "shareware" fee to myself at the address 
  121. below (for international users, see item 4 in "The Fine Print").  Please 
  122. include a brief note describing where you got this font, what you like 
  123. about it, and what you would like to see in the future.
  124.     If you just have to have the full collection of my train fonts 
  125. (see "Product Ad"), send a couple of FORMATTED 3.5" HD disks (Two 
  126. HD for Mac, or One HD for IBM recommended) and a SELF ADDRESSED 
  127. STAMPED ENVELOPE to the address below. (I hate to format disks 
  128. and you will be sure to get the right machine, Mac or IBM, this way)
  129.     I do not want to send any of my customers into bankruptcy, if 
  130. you are honestly poor, (i.e., you ain't gonna support the American 
  131. way and my education) please send a post card (the weirder the 
  132. better) describing where you got this font, what you like about it and 
  133. what you would like to see added to it.

  135. THE FINE PRINT:
  136. -Each font or icon package is an individual product.  Thus, if you 
  137. keep Passenger Font and Freight Font, you should pay $20, not $10.
  138.  
  139. -You may NOT use this font in any publication or any product unless 
  140. you register your copy by sending $10 FOR EACH FONT YOU USE.  Be 
  141. sure to specify which fonts you are registering for.  It is not fair for 
  142. you to make money off of my hard work without paying the 
  143. Shareware fees.
  144.  
  145. -If you decide to keep several of my shareware products and you are 
  146. only using them for personal applications (or you are using them for 
  147. a struggling NONPROFIT organization promoting railroads), then $10 
  148. a piece can get to be a bit expensive.  Please pay what you think they 
  149. are worth.  I recommend $10 for the first font and $5 for each 
  150. additional font.

  152. -If you do not reside in the US, then getting a check in US$ may be 
  153. difficult for you.  So, I will also accept any interesting widgets, toys, 
  154. books, time tables, postcards or what not.  What's common place to 
  155. you is quite possibly exotic for me.  By the way, I'm a rail fan (hint 
  156. hint hint)

  158. -You may distribute this font for free, however, you may not sell this 
  159. font or include it in any package for sale without the written 
  160. permission of myself, Benn Coifman.  I am very agreeable to CD 
  161. ROM's and shareware packages for sale, however, I do want to retain 
  162. some degree of control over my work.  So, please contact me first.

  168. WHY SHOULD YOU SEND IN THE SHAREWARE FEE?
  169.     Well, I am releasing this font in it's entirety.  I put a lot of hard 
  170. work into this font.  I have also gotten a lot of pleasure from it.  
  171. Ignoring all of the capitalistic angles, your shareware dollar will 
  172. speed up the development of new train fonts and help me afford 
  173. new font tools.  My goal is to at least break even.
  174.     Only 39 people have registered my shareware products since I 
  175. first released them ten months ago.  There are a lot of expenses that 
  176. go into these fonts.  My font editor cost almost $300.  Then there are 
  177. the little expenses like ink cartridges (you wouldn't believe how 
  178. many ink cartridges I go through) and paying for a mail box.  Oy!  
  179. And you want to talk about memory... 40 Meg of hard disk devoted 
  180. to fonts and icon development.
  181.     I would love to purchase the latest version of Illustrator and 
  182. produce more clip art.  I could also use more disk space to keep these 
  183. toys in.

  186. BENEFITS OF PAYING THE SHAREWARE FEE:
  187.     Enough of what shareware fees do for me, what will they do for 
  188. you!?  I will spend less time on school and more time on producing 
  189. shareware.  You will also be entitled to a peek into things to come.  If 
  190. you send a disk (or two) along with your payment, I will give the 
  191. Demo font that includes all of the odd characters that haven't quite 
  192. found a home yet (including a number of steam engines!).  In 
  193. addition, I will rush you out the most recent versions of my fonts 
  194. and icons.  I might even toss in a couple of pre-release fonts.
