  7. ABOUT THE ALPHABET TRAIN 1.1 FONT:
  8.     Well, if you are going to have a train font, you really should 
  9. have a train font that you can say something with.  Playing Dr. 
  10. Frankenstein, I created a monster by blending Railroad Roman with 
  11. Rail Freight.  I have included two special characters in this font, a 
  12. turn of the century caboose and the NP 328 (the steam engine).  In 
  13. my mind, it wouldn't be right to have a string of letters being pulled 
  14. by a diesel... but I am partial to steam.  For you diesel fanatics, I did 
  15. include one diesel or you can use any of the locomotives found in my 
  16. other railroad fonts.
  17.     After loading up the font, print out a copy of "AT_MAP.WRI" 
  18. for a quick overview.

  20. WHAT IS THIS FONT AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
  21.     I started making fonts that were trains.  They came out looking 
  22. really great, so, now I am dabbling in fonts that are trains caring 
  23. letters.  The key layout is fairly straight forward, you should print 
  24. out the Alphabet Train Legend.  In case you are not one to listen to 
  25. helpful advise, all of the lowercase letters depict uppercase letters on 
  26. flat cars.  Clever, eh?  You can use "AS" for a steam engine traveling 
  27. from right to left and "KL" for a steam engine going left to right ("Z" 
  28. and "M", respectively, for a diesel).  The cabooses can be found in "D", 
  29. "J", "X", and "n".  My suggestion is to use the caboose that is closest on 
  30. the keyboard to the locomotive you select.  But, I'm a purist.  In the 
  31. event that the space bar doesn't give you an empty flatcar, "_" 
  32. should.  Finally, the q-car looks like an o-car in smaller sizes, so I 
  33. provided an alternate q-car in the uppercase "Q" character.
  34.     Have fun with this font, use it for page numbers and titles.  Or 
  35. use the other railroad fonts and create a real mixed train.  The 
  36. possibilities are endless.

  38. NEW WITH VERSION 1.1:
  39.     I went back and caught a couple of stray points in the steam 
  40. engine and cabooses.  They caused some odd shapes on some 
  41. printers.  I have also revised the documentation to make it a little 
  42. more user friendly and reference my newest products.  Added .AFM 
  43. file for OS/2 and Unix users.

  74. SOME CHARACTERS MAY BE TOO DETAILED TO SHOW ON THE SCREEN 
  75. and will appear as empty boxes.  They may still print okay though.

  81. THE TRUE TYPE FONT MAY NOT WORK ON ALL SYSTEMS, THE POST 
  82. SCRIPT (ATM) FONT IS PREFERRED.

  85. ABOUT THE IBM VERSIONS:
  86.     Yeah, I am a Mac head.  I am slowly learning all I can about the 
  87. IBM systems.  I am also enlisting the help of my IBM friends as 
  88. "consultants".  This might be a bumpy road at first, but these fonts 
  89. are pretty neat and they are worth the trek.  From my end, I am 
  90. more than willing to work with you to get the fonts to work on your 
  91. machine.  On your end, I ask for patience if they don't work on the 
  92. first try.  Please let me know ASAP if you are having any problems.  
  93. I am willing to do minor changes or generate bit map files for DOS 
  94. users as much as my time will permit.  Let me know what you want 
  95. or need and we'll work something out.

  97. TRUE TYPE vs. POST SCRIPT:
  98.     On some machines, not all characters of the True Type font will 
  99. be visible.  Please don't lose heart, they are there and should print 
  100. okay, it is just the fact that there are so many points in the character 
  101. that windows decided you don't really need to see it.  I will try to fix 
  102. this in later versions.  If the True Type font gives you problems, try 
  103. the Post Script version, it seems to be a little more stable.  Note that 
  104. the contents of both fonts are the same.

  107. HOW TO INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT TRAIN FONT ON WINDOWS:
  108.     You will need WINDOWS 3.0 or later and/or the ADOBE TYPE 
  109. MANAGER (ATM) version 2.0 or later.
  110. 1) Start the ATM control panel by double clicking on it.
  111. 2) Click the Add button
  112. 3) Locate the drive/directory containing your fonts using the scroll 
  113. bars
  114. 4) Double click on the drive/directory to show the names of the fonts 
  115. on the disk
  116. 5) Select the fonts to install
  117. 6) Click the Add button
  118. 7) Exit ATM (you may have to restart windows to use the fonts, 
  119. depending on the version of ATM you have)
  120.  
  121. WINDOWS TRUE TYPE TIP:
  122.     If a complex True Type font fails to print, you may be able to 
  123. solve the problem by changing the OutlineThreshold setting in the 
  124. [True Type] section of your Windows WIN.INI file.  The default 
  125. setting is 256 (pixels per em (if you don't know, don't worry)) and 
  126. has a range of 0-300.  If you change it to 70 (i.e., 
  127. OutlineThreshold=70), the True Type font might print.  The price of 
  128. this improvement may be a slower print speed.  As I understand it, 
  129. by lowering the OutlineThreshold, you are decreasing the amount of 
  130. memory needed to print the fonts.
  131.     You may also want to consult your Windows documentation.  If 
  132. you do find a clever fix for rendering my complex fonts, please let 
  133. me know and I will pass the word on to other IBM users.

  135.     IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES installing this font or it doesn't seem to 
  136. print out correctly, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as soon as possible.  I can 
  137. either give you more specific instillation information or go and fix 
  138. the bug.  (e-mail is great for this, but snail mail works fine too)

  140.     If you use this font in publication or on a product, please let me 
  141. know.  It is always interesting to hear the clever uses people have 
  142. had for my fonts.  (I would also love a copy of your publication for 
  143. my scrap book)

  146. NOW FOR THE "ASKING FOR MONEY" BIT, AKA, THIS IS SHAREWARE:
  147.     You are free to use (play with, throw at the cat, etc.) this font 
  148. for one week after receiving it.  If you like it and decide to keep it, 
  149. you should send a US $10 "shareware" fee to myself at the address 
  150. below (for international users, see item 4 in "The Fine Print").  Please 
  151. include a brief note describing where you got this font, what you like 
  152. about it, and what you would like to see in the future.
  153.     If you just have to have the full collection of my train fonts 
  154. (see "Product Ad"), send a couple of FORMATTED 3.5" HD disks (Two 
  155. HD for Mac, or One HD for IBM recommended) and a SELF ADDRESSED 
  156. STAMPED ENVELOPE to the address below. (I hate to format disks 
  157. and you will be sure to get the right machine, Mac or IBM, this way)
  158.     I do not want to send any of my customers into bankruptcy, if 
  159. you are honestly poor, (i.e., you ain't gonna support the American 
  160. way and my education) please send a post card (the weirder the 
  161. better) describing where you got this font, what you like about it and 
  162. what you would like to see added to it.

  164. THE FINE PRINT:
  165. -Each font or icon package is an individual product.  Thus, if you 
  166. keep Passenger Font and Freight Font, you should pay $20, not $10.
  167.  
  168. -You may NOT use this font in any publication or any product unless 
  169. you register your copy by sending $10 FOR EACH FONT YOU USE.  Be 
  170. sure to specify which fonts you are registering for.  It is not fair for 
  171. you to make money off of my hard work without paying the 
  172. Shareware fees.
  173.  
  174. -If you decide to keep several of my shareware products and you are 
  175. only using them for personal applications (or you are using them for 
  176. a struggling NONPROFIT organization promoting railroads), then $10 
  177. a piece can get to be a bit expensive.  Please pay what you think they 
  178. are worth.  I recommend $10 for the first font and $5 for each 
  179. additional font.

  181. -If you do not reside in the US, then getting a check in US$ may be 
  182. difficult for you.  So, I will also accept any interesting widgets, toys, 
  183. books, time tables, postcards or what not.  What's common place to 
  184. you is quite possibly exotic for me.  By the way, I'm a rail fan (hint 
  185. hint hint)

  187. -You may distribute this font for free, however, you may not sell this 
  188. font or include it in any package for sale without the written 
  189. permission of myself, Benn Coifman.  I am very agreeable to CD 
  190. ROM's and shareware packages for sale, however, I do want to retain 
  191. some degree of control over my work.  So, please contact me first.

  197. WHY SHOULD YOU SEND IN THE SHAREWARE FEE?
  198.     Well, I am releasing this font in it's entirety.  I put a lot of hard 
  199. work into this font.  I have also gotten a lot of pleasure from it.  
  200. Ignoring all of the capitalistic angles, your shareware dollar will 
  201. speed up the development of new train fonts and help me afford 
  202. new font tools.  My goal is to at least break even.
  203.     Only 39 people have registered my shareware products since I 
  204. first released them ten months ago.  There are a lot of expenses that 
  205. go into these fonts.  My font editor cost almost $300.  Then there are 
  206. the little expenses like ink cartridges (you wouldn't believe how 
  207. many ink cartridges I go through) and paying for a mail box.  Oy!  
  208. And you want to talk about memory... 40 Meg of hard disk devoted 
  209. to fonts and icon development.
  210.     I would love to purchase the latest version of Illustrator and 
  211. produce more clip art.  I could also use more disk space to keep these 
  212. toys in.

  215. BENEFITS OF PAYING THE SHAREWARE FEE:
  216.     Enough of what shareware fees do for me, what will they do for 
  217. you!?  I will spend less time on school and more time on producing 
  218. shareware.  You will also be entitled to a peek into things to come.  If 
  219. you send a disk (or two) along with your payment, I will give the 
  220. Demo font that includes all of the odd characters that haven't quite 
  221. found a home yet (including a number of steam engines!).  In 
  222. addition, I will rush you out the most recent versions of my fonts 
  223. and icons.  I might even toss in a couple of pre-release fonts.
