< Thanks Glen. Looks like my problem is MS Word for PM... obviously
< doesn't pick up on those fonts. Maybe in the next release (May '93?)
< - I won't hold my breath.
Describe v2.0 displays and prints ATM fonts very nicely <G>!. I too, was
very disappointed with MS Word/PM.

Well, I'm afraid that my problem is probably the fact that I am
using products from the MS crowd (using that abbreviation gives
multiple sclerosis a bad name, as that's the original owner of the
acronym. Seems like using MS's products gives my PS/2 the
technical equivalent, though, so maybe it's not inappropriate.)
The fonts that I downloaded from this board (after my first
message - sorry, Phil) are in fact available for use in File
Manager and the Editor - it's just that I can't use them with
Word for PM or seem to get them plugged into the Print Manager
(more on other Print Manager confusion in a later note.) Given
that you use them with abandon in Describe lets me know where the
problem is - right in the pocket, in fact. Oh well. I get
enough grief for using Word instead of WordPerfect - if I went
to another, totally unheard-of (here) package like Describe, I'd
get fired.
Thanks for the info, though, as always.

Nancy, if you have a high resolution display adapter and/or a Postscript
printer defined as the output device, PMWord won't show ATM fonts until the
font sized exceeds 30 pts. It's a bug somewhere. I have spend hours on the
phone to MA "Technical support" and there attitude is that if it's not the
Win version, they really don't won't to deal with you. They acknowledge
the problem, but will not even take your name to send a fix, nor will they
even commit to fix it. PMWord has been removed from my system. I have
better things to waste disk space on.

Nancy, when you say that MS Word does not work with your ATM fonts, are you
referring to the fact that they do not show up on screen? Have you tried
setting your point size really large? How about 32 pt? You should see the
screen rendition then. This is caused by an optimization attempt within MS
Word. If you truly want to see them on screen, (this will of course slow
Word down even more than it has already), and in normal point sizes, do not
list them as downloadable fonts in the printer driver. At least for the
PostScript driver, this will cause ATM to download drawing instructions for
each character (NOT as bitmaps). This should be acceptable for short
documents, especially when the .PFA file is about 50-100K to begin with. I
havn't tried this with the HP driver as the only such printer in my office
is firmly connected to the boss's PC, and thus not accessible from the LAN.
Obviously, this is a major MS snafu, but this should let you do what you
want. Hope this helps.

Whan printing from File Manager via drag and drop to Print Manager, or from
command line, etc., the printer, any printer will use it's default internal
font. I know of only one way to change thais. That is have a font cart
or downloadable fonts, and select an alternate default font from the OS/2
printer device driver. Many, not all, printer drivers allow that.
I have not yet figured out how to change print orientation on the fly
either. We get several calls a week in the NSC looking for that
information. I hope someone figures it out soon. If anyone here knows how
to do that, please leave a note describing the process so I can get the
information to others who need it.

Ah, but DeScribe will read and write both Word and WP files....as well as
WordStar, and about 20 other file formats.....
Well, enough of that. I guess you just want to be able to print in fonts!
How about something free but slow and maybe buggy? The latest WLO ports of
the Windows 3.o Applets does include a ported version of Windows Write. It
displays and prints in fonts! Yes, Nancy, it's true. The entire WLO
More - [Y]es or [Return], [N]o? package is about 1.3mb zipped and I am trying to get permission (from MS)
to distribute it here. It is copyrighted but earlier versions were on CIS
so I don't know. In any case, WLO-Write does print and display OS/2 ATM
fonts and also saves files in ASCII, .WRI and MSWord formats!.
BTW, if you are really anxious for the ported Applets, they can be found on
Fernwood, OS/2 Shareware, and Infolinc (415-778-5929 for those in CA). Look
for WLO.ZIP or WLONEW.ZIP of 1300kb size.

Nancy: That's what Music Corporation of America says, everytime someone
uses MCA to refer to Micro Channel Architecture (and why you never see an
IBM reference, including mine, use that acronym). It's a pain to always
have to say Micro Channel, but unless we want to get sued, we must. But
apparently it's OK for others to use that acronym in reference to Micro
Channel (or at least MCA isn't going to sue millions of individuals and
writers--it's a lot easier to sue IBM for using the acronym!). Mark.

Bob, I actually dont use 123/G rather I use Freelance Graphics which has
the same graph tool as 123/G. Freelance prints any ATM font from my
postscript printer. I was refering to the fact that Freelance's graph
tool and 123/G's as well does not support the ATM screen fonts. This is
a real drawback to me as from using DeScribe & Freelance's presentation
tool I am fully accustomed to true WYSIWYG. Hopefully the next release
of 123/G & Freelance will cure this. Take care.

A funny thing happened on the way to XGA....
Until this week, I have been using my Mod90 in VGA graphics mode due to a
flickering problem with my monitor. I assumed it was due to the XGA board
having only 512k video memory. I have since upgraded to 1mb vram and
replaced my NEC 4D which had problems and went to hi-res XGA. Since doing
that, all my ATM fonts started showing up in PM Word - AND THEY ACTUALLY
WORK AT ANY POINT SIZE. I have a QMS PS-410 postscript printer directly
attached. I have no idea why it is working all of a sudden, although I plan
to go to DeScribe 2.0 shortly anyway.
Just thought I'd throw this one out there to anyone interested.
P.S. I also reloaded OS/2 EE after installing XGA. Perhaps that had more to
do with it....

William -
Thanks for the info - I know, I deserve what I get if I am using Word!
I DID try one thing, which is now printing - I set a text selection to
32 point with one of the PD fonts (Architect) then downsized it to 12.
It resized it down to 12 and still displayed it properly on my 8514.
(Hang on, it's printing on my HP Laserjet Series II now - let's see -
HEY, IT PRINTED!)
Well, looks like if you size it up, then size it down, it'll show. I
guess I never tested whether it would print without displaying
properly. I have been using the additional fonts in Pagemaker, though -
my life may have suddenly become more complicated by choices! I love it!!
Thanks for the good advice.

Thanks, Phil - guess I get what I deserve, using Word, but for now I'm
stuck. I did manage to get a PD ATM font to display *and* print on
my poor ol' Laserjet Series II. See earlier message to William Bresler.
Anyway, thanks for the WLO pointer (the last thing I really want to do is
use crummy software to get pretty fonts. I used to rail about that last
85% of the effort required to write reports, which always seemed to be
getting it to look "just right", and here I am down in the mouth because
I can't have Postscript Dingbats. Jeez.)
So I'm still not ready for a Describe order - maybe the next Word
shortcoming will break the camel's back.
Thanks,
Nancy

You owe it to yourself to ask DeScribe for the FREE working model of

known to sell eval copies at a substantial discount. It helps to be with

The main problem I had with the 4D was that when I would go into a full
screen, it would flicker wildly for about 2 seconds before stabilizing. I
assumed for a while that this was just a synchronization deficiency that
had more to do with engineering than a bad monitor, but when somebody else
told me that his 4D didn't do that, I called for service. It was replaced
with a new 4D - one that works fine.
The other thing was that when I ran hi-res XGA with 512k of video memory,
most color combinations produced a subtle screen flicker that was most
annoying. It seemed to occur just outside of the direct portion of the
screen at which I was looking (does that make sense?). Anyway, I used VGA
with the new monitor until my extra video RAM came in, so I'm not sure if
the new monitor or the extra RAM fixed the problem.
I hope that helps a little.
BTW, I posted a note about the NEC Multisync Graphics Engine and OS/2 1.3.
I'm not sure if it was blown away during all these problems, so I'll ask
again. I've had the NEC MGE for a while and don't use it because the PM
More - [Y]es or [Return], [N]o? drivers from NEC (purchased separately) don't - or didn't - work with 1.3.
Does anybody know if that's been remedied?

I'd like to echo what Phil just wrote to you regarding DeScribe's
discounts. They have forwarded me a server copy (full program) of DeScribe
2.0 for evaluation. THey told (faxed) me that if I wanted to keep it, it

the street price would be a good amount less than retail, but $238 is a

Thanks for the report about your 4D. Mine didn't ever exhibit the
problems you noted, but, interestingly enough, my 3D did! In fact, that
is one of the reasons (but not the only one) I went to the 4D. Every
time I switched from the PM 8514 mode to a full-screen group or the
DOS-box, the 3D screen would go completely crazy for 1-2 secs whicle the
sync adjusted.
I'm sure the flicker is partly caused by the fact that although the 4D is
CAPABLE of running non-interlaced, with an IBM 8514/A or IBM XGA, the
monitor is driven in interlaced mode. Flicker seems to be more noticable
at peripheral vision. Also, the persistance of the phosphors in a
monitor can exagerate or mask interlace flicker, but selecting just the
right amount of persistance is largely a matter of taste.
I don't know anything about NEC display boards. They are supposed to be
good, but display drivers for PM are an embarassment for most monitor
vendors -- PM is just not well supported except by IBM -- thus far.

I have two PS printers defined (one color, one B&W), an HP LJII

Brad: All you have to do to install ATM fonts for OS/2 1.3 is copy the
*.AFM and *.PFB files from the diskettes to either your \OS2\DLL directory
(where the other fonts are) or a new one if you prefer, and then use the
Control Panel Installation pull-down to Add Fonts, and tell it the
directory where the font files are. Then select all the file names and sit
back and wait. When it is finished you are done. (You actually don't have
to copy the files from the diskette to the hard drive first, but it speeds
up the installation considerably.
Once the fonts are installed, ALL printers that support ATM fonts can use
them. You don't install fonts printer by printer; just globally.
I hope this helps. Good luck. Mark.

Mark, You are correct except when using PostScript printers. In this
case you must install the fonts that are to be used (download) via the
Print Manager. If not then the fonts do not print on the page (no text

This is true for the IBM 4019 PosrScript drivers under OS/2 SE 1.3 &

Brad, installation of the fonts just one time is sufficient. Just do NOT
use any installer which comes with the fonts!! Create a PSFONTS directory
on your fixed disk, and copy all the font files to that directory. Use the
OS/2 Control Panel to install the fonts by pointing it to the PSFONTS
directory.

Mark, To add downloadable fonts through the Print Manager (PostScript
drivers only) do as follows:
Select Setup...Printers
push the CHANGE button
push the PRINTER PROPERTIES BUTTON
push the FONTS button.
you will now be in a dialog box titlid "FONT INSTALLER"
insert the floppy with the .PFB & .AFM files and push OPEN
now select the fonts that are NOT resident and push ADD
My experiences with OS/2 1.3 since December is that non-resident

Huh? Mark -> I installed all my postscript (ATM 1) printer fonts via the

Where in the manual? I can not say because I lent out my manuals to 1.3.
I can tell you where I installed/added the postscript (ATM 1) printer
fonts via the Print Manager. I did it via the "Font" button on the

You can get to the Postscript Printer Properties Dialog via the following

Bill: Oh, from the DRIVER.... The Control Panel is where you load fonts
globally for display use. If the fonts match those in the printer,
printing is very fast. If they don't match, OS/2 rasterizes the fonts
before sending a document to the printer. The difference in printing time
depends on the document size, and the same document using native (ie in the
printer) fonts, vs rasterized fonts can be 30K vs 1MB. So it greatly
impacts the printing time.
I would think that loading the ATM fonts that aren't already in the printer
when the driver loads would speed up the printing times for those fonts;
but I haven't tried it.
Sorry for the confusion. Mark.

Yes. They print just fine, but MUCH slower than the native printer fonts
do. But perhaps my word processor, DeScribe, is doing the rasterizing,
rather than OS/2 itself, as I had thought. DeScribe is the only program I

problems. One is suppose to use the print manager to install fonts.
Bert: What threw me is that if you have the 39-font PS option installed,
and get the Adobe Plus pack, which gives you the additional 22 fonts that
don't come with OS/2, you DON'T need to install the fonts via the driver
setup, because these fonts are already built into the PS option hardware.
You only have to use the Control Panel to install the fonts for the screen.
On the other hand, if you add ADDITIONAL fonts, that must be DOWNLOADED to
the printer, this is done from the driver setup. Although I later added
some public domain ATM fonts, I didn't install them this way because I
hadn't had to install the Adobe Plus Pack this way.
I just installed all the "optional" fonts directly from the \OS2\DLL
directory (where they were installed from the Control Panel), without
having to get out my diskettes again, and tried printing a document using
one of the downloadable fonts.
More - [Y]es or [Return], [N]o?
Because DeScribe didn't have to rasterize the font anymore, the size of the
print file (from Job..Details in the Print Manager) was several megabytes
smaller than before, the time to send the file to the spooler was minutes
shorter than before, and after a lengthy download time for the first page,
the other pages printed minutes faster (each) than they did before.
Overall, the time reduced for printing that 11 page document with a
"non-standard" font was probably reduced from an hour to about 10 minutes
(which is only slightly longer than usual). But it is a very "heavy"
document, using 9 point fonts to fill most of the white space.
So thanks to all who pointed out the error of my ways! It shows what you
can learn if you RTFM! <grin>
I hope some of you also learned a thing or two from my explanation here of
the difference between installing fonts for "native" PS fonts, and
installing downloadable fonts for "non-native" (foreign?) fonts.
Good luck. Mark.

They should be installed using the PostScript device driver FONTS button.
Dave: I never even used the "core fonts" diskette (which doesn't even have
the right format files for OS/2). I didn't have to install anything for
the built-in PS fonts that come with the PS option. The same with the
Adobe Plus Pack, except I loaded the 22 fonts via the Control Panel, for
screen fonts. Until today I had never used the printer driver font install
option, and all the fonts that were included with the 4019 PS option
printed just fine. Only the ATM fonts that WERE NOT part of the PS option
needed to be rasterized first. By installing thes fonts through the driver
install option I was able to speed up the printing of these fonts, but they
printed before also, just slower. Mark.

Mark, if you install any ATM fonts, that you *DO NOT* have resident in your
printer, via the PS printer driver ATM (or the print driver) will simply
download the font binary to the printer rather than rasterizing the font.
This is much faster.

Bill: That's what I said. Once I installed the fonts as downloadable the
program no longer had to rasterize the font, and printing speed increased
dramatically. Mark.
