  4. Usage:  FATOPT [-i[dle]] [-r[eport_only]] <drive_letter[:]>
  5. Run without arguments for a brief reminder and some other info.
  6.  
  7. FATOPT will compress and defragment FAT drives under OS/2 2.0+.  It
  8. won't run under DOS or that other MS thing, but you can start it from an
  9. OS/2 DOS penalty box.  Files and directories marked with the System
  10. attribute are not moved (except for EA DATA. SF and WP ROOT. SF).

  12. Don't run FATOPT on compressed drives -- use the utilities provided with
  13. your disk compression program instead.  As with all programs of this
  14. type, you should back up first!

  16. FATOPT requires that it be able to lock the drive on which it works.
  17. There may be some drives that you cannot access without booting from
  18. floppies -- for instance, the boot drive, a drive on which SWAPPER.DAT
  19. resides, a drive with opened programs, data files or loaded DLLs.

  21. FATOPT can use quite a bit of memory.  It'll try to adjust what it uses
  22. to what's available when it runs, but there is a minimum amount (which
  23. varies by the size of the drive being optimized).  You'll receive a
  24. message if you don't have enough (only likely to be problematical if
  25. running from floppies on ludicrously huge drives and minimal RAM -- use
  26. HPFS).

  28. FATOPT, like any FAT defragger, shouldn't be run too often as it really
  29. gives the old hard drive a workout, and minor fragmentation isn't likely
  30. to hurt anything, anyway.  Too much of a good thing will give you
  31. something nasty.

  37. extensive testing, but neither I nor my beta testers can't duplicate all
  38. the conditions that can be encountered in real life.
