FATOPT copyright (c) 1994 by M. Kimes -- all rights reserved
============================================================
Usage: FATOPT [-i[dle]] [-r[eport_only]] <drive_letter[:]>
Run without arguments for a brief reminder and some other info.
FATOPT will compress and defragment FAT drives under OS/2 2.0+. It
won't run under DOS or that other MS thing, but you can start it from an
OS/2 DOS penalty box. Files and directories marked with the System
attribute are not moved (except for EA DATA. SF and WP ROOT. SF).
Don't run FATOPT on compressed drives -- use the utilities provided with
your disk compression program instead. As with all programs of this
type, you should back up first!
FATOPT requires that it be able to lock the drive on which it works.
There may be some drives that you cannot access without booting from
floppies -- for instance, the boot drive, a drive on which SWAPPER.DAT
resides, a drive with opened programs, data files or loaded DLLs.
FATOPT can use quite a bit of memory. It'll try to adjust what it uses
to what's available when it runs, but there is a minimum amount (which
varies by the size of the drive being optimized). You'll receive a
message if you don't have enough (only likely to be problematical if
running from floppies on ludicrously huge drives and minimal RAM -- use
HPFS).
FATOPT, like any FAT defragger, shouldn't be run too often as it really
gives the old hard drive a workout, and minor fragmentation isn't likely
to hurt anything, anyway. Too much of a good thing will give you
something nasty.
This version of FATOPT is free for the using, but I retain copyright.
If you have any problems with FATOPT, please send a **DETAILED** bug
report to the author at one of the addresses below. FATOPT has received
extensive testing, but neither I nor my beta testers can't duplicate all
the conditions that can be encountered in real life.
THERE IS NO WARRANTY EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED. BE CAREFUL. YOU'RE ON YOUR
OWN, GOODNIGHT.
