What is MEMSTAT?
MEMSTAT Version 2.0 is a utility program which displays the current
amount of available memory and the size of the swap file under OS/2 1.x
and 2.x.
It has proven to be a useful tool, both in the test environment and in
the production environment.
What does this package contain?
This package actually contains Version 1.2 of MEMSTAT/SWAPSTAT as well
as Version 2.0 of MEMSTAT. Under OS/2 1.x, MEMSTAT and SWAPSTAT were run
as separate programs which minimized themselves and used their icon titles
to display continuous updates of available memory and swap file size. With
the advent of the Workplace Shell, this arrangement no longer works. Instead,
MEMSTAT and SWAPSTAT have been combined into one program, called MEMSTAT,
which displays the values in a small window. The older versions are supplied
in a separate archive (MEMST1_2) within the MEMSTAT archive.
Installation
To install MEMSTAT, place MEMSTAT.EXE in a directory in your path and
use STARTUP.CMD to start it or make it an auto-start application in one
of your groups (or in the "Startup" folder under OS/2 Version 2.0).
If your swap file is not the default "C:\OS2\SYSTEM\SWAPPER.DAT", it is
necessary to set an environment variable, "SWAPPATH" to tell MEMSTAT
where to find the file
e.g. set SWAPPATH=D:\TMP\SWAPPER.DAT
This variable can be set in CONFIG.SYS immediately after your SWAPPATH
statement so you remember to change it if you change your swap path again.
Operation
MEMSTAT commences operation once it is started and displays the memory and
swap file status, updated at one second intervals.
If MEMSTAT receives a WM_SAVEAPPLICATION message, e.g. after selecting
"Desktop->Save" under OS/2 1.3, it saves its current position to OS2.INI.
The next time it is started MEMSTAT will move its display window to that
position. This allows you to place MEMSTAT in a position suited to your
working environment.
Updates
Updates to MEMSTAT will be made regularly, as problems are reported and
enhancements are requested. The easiest way to request enhancements, report
bugs, or to register that you are using MEMSTAT, is to send an electronic
mail note to Greg Jones at any of the above addresses. When new releases are
made, I will inform those that have registered where the new version can be
picked up from.
Program License Agreement
MEMSTAT is distributed as a general interest utility. You are free to copy
and use the software for personal use and distribution in its original,
unmodified form provided no fee is charged beyond reasonable media and/or
shipping charges.
Corporate users interested in MEMSTAT are invited to contact The Software
Cottage regarding licensing.
