!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THIS UTILITY IS FOR FAT FILE SYSTEMS ONLY!!!!!!!!!!
This utility is provided for your use, and has not been thoroughly tested by
IBM for use in every situation. Several people have used this and had satisfactory results, however, IBM makes NO claims that this software will work in every configuration. This utility is not supported through the regular help channels, (i.e. PSHC, NSC, Defect Support, etc...).
IBM strongly suggests that you make a system backup before using this utility or making any changes to the operating system.
DBPREP is a utility to allow DOS 4.0, DOS 5.0, and DR DOS to be installed
as a dualboot function on top of OS/2 2.0, and recover to OS/2 in case
something goes wrong during the DOS install.
Since, DOS can only exist on an active primary partition, the DBPREP
utility should only be used if OS/2 is located on the C: partition.
There are two possible parameters for this utility -- /PREP and /RECOVER.
- How to get started:
There is only one file you need to copy from the bulletin board,
dbprep.com. Copy the utility dbprep.com to your OS2 subdirectory.
COPY A:\DBPREP.COM C:\OS2
* ** It is highly recommended that you make a backup copy of your
OS/2 config.sys and autoexec.bat files before executing the
dbprep /prep command.
OS/2 cannot boot up without the config.sys file.
If during the RECOVER operation an error message indicates
that the config.sys file cannot be restored, you can manually
restore the config.sys file with the copy you saved earlier.
Fortunately, OS/2 can boot up without the autoexec.bat file
and the user is still able to open and use DOS sessions as well
as WINOS2. However, by making a copy of the autoexec.bat file
there is no need to reconstruct your path settings etc...
It is strictly for the sake of convenience that you make
a copy of the OS/2 autoexec.bat file.
- How to use the /PREP option:
Open an OS/2 window or full screen session. At the command prompt
type "dbprep /prep"
For example:
C:\OS2\dbprep /prep
The /PREP parameter cannot be used if DOS is booted.
/PREP parameter can only be used in OS/2.
- Purpose of /PREP option:
Once the command dbprep /prep has been executed, the system is now
ready for DOS to be installed. The user should perform the recommended
shutdown prior to rebooting with DOS. The user can either execute
the DOS install program, or execute SYS.COM and manually copy the
DOS files to the DOS subdirectory.
- Tips for Installing DOS after running DBPREP /PREP:
- DOS 4.0 and DOS 5.0
System Transfer using SYS.COM
-----------------------------
1. Boot DOS from diskette drive.
2. Run sys.com,
for example:
A>SYS C:
3. Make a subdirectory C:\DOS and copy the DOS files to this directory.
4. Replace OS/2's CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files in
the root directory with DOS' CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
NOTE: DOS will not boot with OS/2's CONFIG.SYS file.
Change any reference to 'A:' in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
to 'C:\DOS'
DOS Install from Diskettes
--------------------------
1. Boot from the DOS install diskette.
2. Install normally. The install procedure will automatically
replace OS/2's CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.
WARNING!! DOS 4.0 -- DO NOT select the option "update all DOS
files on fixed disk;" otherwise you will
lose the OS/2 files which have the same
file name.
SELECT "Copy non-system files to directory
specified" to avoid losing OS/2 files.
WARNING!! DOS 5.0 -- If you have multiboot installed on your
- WARNING!! -- DO NOT select the "replace DOS files" option,
otherwise OS/2 files with the same name will
be written over.
- WARNING!! -- DO NOT Backup the old operating system.
- WARNING!! -- If you have multiboot installed on your machine
you will see the following message displayed
during the install of DR DOS:
WARNING:
This drive is not the current boot drive.
If you wish to boot DR DOS from this drive,
complete the installation, and then run
FDISK and select the drive as the bootable
partition.
DO NOT run DR DOS' FDISK to change the C:
partition to bootable. The Boot Manager
is suppose to be the bootable partition.
After DOS 5.0 is installed, get to a command prompt in dos and type the following... EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT. Add the following, ;c:\os2, to the line that begins with PATH=. This will allow you to boot between DOS and OS/2 from a C prompt.
Once DOS is installed on the system, the user can boot up with OS/2
by executing the command "c:\os2\boot /os2." Likewise, if the
user is running OS/2 and wishes to boot up with DOS, the command
"boot /dos" should be executed.
If for some reason the user encounters some problems
or wishes to forfeit the dualboot environment, then
the user can execute the dbprep command using the /recover
parameter to return the system back to its original state.
- How to use the /RECOVER option:
The /RECOVER parameter cannot be run in OS/2. It can only be used
in a pure DOS environment, for instance PC DOS. At the command
prompt type "dbprep /recover"
For example:
C:\os2\dbprep /recover
- Purpose of /RECOVER option:
The /RECOVER option will delete the files necessary to boot DOS and
restore the OS/2 files needed to boot. Basically, the /RECOVER option
restores the system back to a non-dualboot environment.
