  14. information not included in the product documentation.

  32. Before You Install XDS
  33. ----------------------

  35. Hardware Requirements
  36.  
  37.     CPU:     80386 minimum, 80486 or higher recommended
  38.     Display: VGA minimum, SVGA recommended for XDS Environment
  39.     RAM:     12MB minimum, 16MB or more recommended
  40.     DASD:    In case of full installation:
  41.                  Native XDS-x86 - 11.4MB
  42.                  XDS-C          - 6.9MB
  43.                  Both           - 15.2MB

  45. Software Requirements
  46.  
  47.     Operating System: IBM OS/2 Warp Version 3 or OS/2 Warp Version 4
  48.  
  49.     For Native XDS-x86, no additional software is required. For XDS-C,
  50.     an ANSI-compliant C compiler should be installed. XDS-C supports
  51.     the following compilers out-of-the-box:
  52.  
  53.     IBM C Set++*
  54.     IBM Visual Age C++*
  55.     Watcom C/C++
  56.  
  57.     Manual setup would be required if another C compiler is used.

  60. Getting Help
  61. ------------
  62.  
  63.     The documentation is shipped in Postscript format on a separate
  64.     diskette or, in case of on-line distribution, in a zip file.
  65.     Printed manuals are available from some distributors at extra cost.
  66.  
  67.     Select the "Documentation" component during install to have the
  68.     on-line manuals installed. They will be available from the
  69.     "XDS Information" subfolder.

  72. Installing XDS
  73. --------------
  74.  
  75. Installing Over Versions Prior to 2.21
  76.  
  77.     XDS-C for OS/2, versions prior to 2.21, did not have an install
  78.     program; Native XDS-x86 v2.21 was also released without one first.
  79.     If you have such a product, you have to either delete it manually 
  80.     or install a new product to a different directory. In either case,
  81.     ensure that new product's directories precede or replace old ones
  82.     in PATH and BOOKSHELF environment variables and that XDSDIR points
  83.     to a new product's installation directory.

  85.     NOTE: if you have XDS Environment installed, you may wish to keep
  86.     your profile.

  88. If You Have Another XDS Product Installed
  89.  
  90.     IMPORTANT: If you already have one or more XDS products installed,
  91.                read the following notes carefully.
  92.  
  93.     1. Since XDS products share a number of files, they have to be
  94.        installed in the same directory. So you will not be allowed
  95.        to set installation directory. If you do not have enough disk
  96.        space, you have to delete all XDS products and install them
  97.        on a different drive.
  98.  
  99.     2. Names of all files copied to your hard disk during installation
  100.        are initially FAT-compatible. There is a script which you might
  101.        use to expand names of files corresponding to library modules
  102.        to match module names (only in case of installation onto a file
  103.        system which supports long file names, e.g. HPFS). To operate
  104.        properly, the installation program SHRINKS FILE NAMES BACK
  105.        to 8.3 convention BEFORE INSTALLING a new XDS product, so you
  106.        may need to re-run that script after installation.

  108. Floppy Disk Installation
  109.  
  110.     To install an XDS product from floppy disks, insert the disk labeled
  111.     as first into your floppy drive and type
  112.

  114.     INSTALL
  115.  
  116.     at the OS/2 command prompt, then follow the on-line instructions.

  118. Archive Installation
  119.  
  120.     To install an electronically shipped product, create a temporary
  121.     directory on your hard drive and unpack the downloaded archive
  122.     into it, then type
  123.  
  124.     INSTALL
  125.  
  126.     at the OS/2 command prompt and follow the on-line instructions.
  127.     
  128.     You may also create installation floppies if you are short in disk
  129.     space, or to make a backup, by running the MKDISKS.CMD script.

  131. Adding And Removing Components
  132.  
  133.     Each XDS product consists of several components. During install,
  134.     you are prompted to select the required components. You may add
  135.     or remove components any time later by launching the INSTALL 
  136.     program as described above and following the on-line instructions.
  137.     Remove all components to remove the entire product.

  140. Late-Breaking News
  141. ------------------
  142.  
  143.     XDS Environment, optionally included in Native XDS-x86 2.31 and
  144.     XDS-C 2.31 packages, is at 2.21 level. The new IDE is currently 
  145.     in beta and will be available for 2.31 users at no extra cost.
