PEN FOR OS/2 - README
Welcome to Pen for OS/2*. Thank you for helping us evaluate
the new Pen for OS/2 product.
This file contains helpful hints resulting from our testing,
as well as updated information that was not included in the
publications. The file is divided into the categories shown
below. Be sure to review the section on Uninstalling Pen
for OS/2 before you proceed with installation.

PEN FOR OS/2 BETA - CONTENT
o This release of Pen for OS/2 includes pen-awareness
for text areas. Support is built into the OS/2
Multiple Line Entry (MLE) Control and Single Line
Entry (SLE) Control using unlined "gridless" handwriting.
You can write directly into a window that can accept
keyboard input such as the System Editor window, an
entry field, spin button field, combo box field, or an
OS/2 or DOS window. The system recognizes the characters,
and then the text is displayed beginning at the cursor
location.
o Writing has been enhanced to allow you to write into
lined or unlined areas, as well as boxed areas.
o Constraints support built into the Handwriting Control
(HWX), MLE and SLE - The handwriting window can constrain
the recognizer with a new set of window style bits. The
set of new style bits is defined in PENPM.H in the Pen
for OS/2 Toolkit. For example, you may specify a field
to recognize only numbers.
o Handwriting Pad customization:
- The Handwriting Page in the Customization object allows
you to specify handwriting preferences. You can select
from three types of Handwriting Pads (boxed, lined, or
no lines), and you can select the font size used within
the pad to adjust spacing between the lines.
o Application overrides:
- A new "Writing mode" override in the settings notebook for
an application allows you to force Pen for OS/2 to only allow
text, gestures, or both for unaware applications. If you select
"no override," the system allows what is most appropriate for
the window.
- A second Overrides page contains the "Drawing complexity"
override that allows you to customize the number of input
points the application receives. This setting improves the
drawing quality in many drawing programs.
o Pen Tool Bar customization:
- The Pen Tool Bar layout feature (located in the system
menu) allows you to specify whether the tool bar is
displayed vertically or horizontally.
o Telepen can now communicate over modems and serial (null-modem)
cables in addition to NETBIOS. The dialing directory, local
information, and listen mode functions have been enhanced to
support this new feature.
o 2-pel wide ink is now available.
o New object oriented programming interfaces have been provided.
o Devices supported:
o Wacom SD-510C *
o Wacom SD-510C with pressure
o Kurta XGT Tablet running Format 3 for COM1 and the size to 12x12
o Kurta XGT Tablet running Format 3 for COM2 and the size to 12x12
o Kurta XGT Tablet running Format 3 for COM1 and the size to 4x5
o Kurta XGT Tablet running Format 3 for COM2 and the size to 4x5
o Calcomp COM1, No AFT
o Calcomp COM1, AFT On
o Calcomp COM2, No AFT
o Calcomp COM2, AFT On
o IBM ThinkPad 710T
o IBM ThinkPad 730T
o IBM ThinkPad 750P
o Dauphin DTR-1
o Compaq Concerto
o Appoint Gliffic Plus COM1
o Appoint Gliffic Plus COM2
* If you are using a Wacom** SD-510C, it is advisable to
change the hardware switch settings to the following:
DS 1 DS 2 DS 3
11011000 11100001 10010000
(1=ON, 0=OFF)
By updating these settings, the device settings will be
correct in case the tablet controller is reset for any reason.
Refer to the documentation that came with your device for
information about changing the settings.
NOTE: When you specify the pen device you want to install,
do not use the down arrow key to select from the
list of devices. Doing so may cause the device
install to malfunction.
PEN FOR OS/2 BETA - RESTRICTED FUNCTION
o In the beta release, the "Pause beep" page of the
Sound object and "Timing page 2" of the Mouse object
are not available.
In order to use your mouse as you would a pen, you need
to use a sample program included in the Pen for OS/2 beta
Toolkit. After installing the toolkit, do the following:
1) Double-tap on the "Pen for OS/2 Toolkit" folder.
2) Double-tap on "Samples."
3) Double-tap on "WRT API Sample."
4) Select "System Value" from the menu bar.
a) To use the mouse as a pen for the current boot session
only, select "Set Value..."
b) To use the mouse as a pen across multiple boot
sessions, select "Write Value..."
5) Select "Mouse Pause Enable" from the System Variable
drop-down list.
6) Change the spin button to the right of the System Variable
drop-down from 0 to 1.
7) Tap on the "Write" or "Set" push button, depending on
whether you followed step 4a or 4b (above).
8) Tap on the "Cancel" push button.
9) Select "Options" from the menu bar.
10) Select "Exit."
To change the system back so that the mouse does not act
as a pen:
1) Double-tap on "WRT API Sample" in the Samples folder.
2) Select "System Value" from the menu bar.
a) To NOT use the mouse as a pen for the current boot session
only, select "Set Value..."
b) To NOT use the mouse like a pen across multiple boot
sessions, select "Write Value...".
3) Select "Mouse Pause Enable" from the System Variable
drop-down list.
4) Change the spin button to the right of the System Variable
drop-down from 1 back to 0.
5) Tap on the "Write" or "Set" push button, depending on
whether you followed step 2a or 2b (above).
6) Tap on the "Cancel" push button.
7) Select "Options" from the menu bar.
8) Select "Exit."
o When using the Handwriting Pad, in any mode other than boxed,
it is possible to take focus away from the target window by
tapping on the writing area of the Handwriting Pad. While
the Handwriting Pad does not appear to have focus, you will
notice that the target window has lost focus. Before sending
the text to the target window you must first tap on it to
give it back the focus.
o Two Special Keys, Ctrl and Alt, on the Pen Tool Bar are not
functioning properly. When you tap on either button, it should
remain pressed for one operation only, and then release (spring-
latched state, indicated by the small square turning gray). When
you tap and pause on either button, it should remain pressed
permanently (latched state, indicated by the entire button
turning gray). Although the buttons appear to operate properly,
their functions are reversed. To return the button to its
original state, close and then reopen the toolbar. *
o If you are running an application that allows you to change
the line type (for example, from solid to dashed), the new
line type chosen will always appear to be solid. In order
to see the change, the area must be repainted.
o If you are writing into a Single Line Entry Field, you need
to first tap on the field to give it focus. If you do not
tap on the field before you start writing, the information
you write will become text, but may not be saved.
o Errors may display when you restart the computer after
installing pen.
If the following error messages are displayed when you
restart your computer with pen installed, press the
enter key to ignore them. The pen function will
not be effected by the errors. (The instructions
assume that OS/2 is installed on drive C.)
SYS1201: The device driver C:\OS2\BOOT\COM.SYS specified
in the DEVICE statement on line xx of the CONFIG.SYS file
was not installed. Line xx was ignored.
SYS1201: The device driver C:\OS2\MDOS\VCOM.SYS specified
in the DEVICE statement on line yy of the CONFIG.SYS file
was not installed. Line yy was ignored.
o If input from your pen appears to be intermittent, check
to see if your pen device is attached to a serial port that
utilizes either a 16450 or 8250 Universal Asynchronous
Receiver Transmitter (UART) chip. The problems you are
experiencing may be caused by the UART chip. To fix this
problem do one of the following:
1) Replace the chip with the 16550 UART chip.
2) Replace your serial port card.
INSTALLING PEN FOR OS/2
Follow these steps to install Pen for OS/2 (be sure to review
the section on Uninstalling Pen for OS/2 before you begin):
1. Begin the Pen for OS/2 Beta installation program:
Insert the Installation diskette 1 in Drive A and
type the following at the command prompt: A:PINSTALL
The installation program is a Presentation Manager*
application that will enable you to install Pen for OS/2
onto your system.
While you are installing Pen for OS/2, a few decisions are
necessary. However, if you need help, you can press the
F1 key or select the Help push button.
2. Before you continue installing Pen for OS/2, review the
ReadMe file. To do so, select ReadMe from the Pen for
OS/2 - Options window. When you have completed reviewing
the ReadMe, select Close from the system menu to return
to this window.
The CONFIG.SYS file must be updated to successfully install
Pen for OS/2. The Options window has a group box labeled
CONFIG.SYS with two radio buttons:
o Pen for OS/2 automatically updates
o You will update
If you select the first option, the Pen for OS/2
installation program will update your CONFIG.SYS
automatically. It will also back up your initial
CONFIG.SYS to CONFIG.XXX.
If you select the second option, the Pen for OS/2
installation program will create a file CONFIGCH.XXX
in the root directory. This file contains a suggested
version of the CONFIG.SYS. You must either incorporate
these changes into your CONFIG.SYS or use this file as
your CONFIG.SYS.
3. Select OK to continue with the installation.
4. The default "source drive" (the drive from which information
is read) is drive A. The default "target drive" (the drive
to which information is written) is drive C. You can change
either drive by clicking on the down arrow in either field
and making another drive selection.
The default "target path" installs Pen for OS/2 in the
directory C:\PEN. You can change the path by typing a
new path in the "Target path" window or by selecting an
entry in the "Target directory" list box.
5. Select Install. Follow the online directions.
6. For changes to take effect when the installation is
complete, you MUST shutdown your system and restart
your computer.
Note: The installation program checks the target drive
to ensure there is enough room to install the entire
Pen for OS/2 product. A warning message is
displayed if it is determined that there is not
enough room on the target drive. You have the option
of continuing with the installation and potentially
receiving an out of space error or cancelling the
installation.
UNINSTALLING PEN FOR OS/2

PEN FOR OS/2 BETA - DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT
Before you can start to develop applications using the
Pen for OS/2 toolkit, you must first have the following
installed in your development environment:
o OS/2 Warp Beta II - Developer's Toolkit
GENERAL SYSTEM CONSIDERATIONS
o The SWAPPER.DAT file may increase in size as you proceed
through Recognition Training. Once you have finished training
a new handwriting style, shutdown the computer to reset
the SWAPPER.DAT file.
o You may not able to request a pop-up menu by clicking
mouse button 2 or drawing the CheckMark gesture if you have
a STARTUP.CMD file that runs when you restart your
computer. To fix the problem do the following:
1) Rename STARTUP.CMD to MYSTART.CMD.
2) Use the Drives object to create a shadow of MYSTART.CMD in the
Startup folder (located in the OS/2 System folder).
3) Shutdown the computer using the LaunchPad.
o It is recommended that you use solid colors for desktop
and folder backgrounds in order to get the best ink contrast.
o The "minimum" NETBIOS requirements for running Telepen are:
COMMANDS = 16
SESSIONS = 2
NAMES = 1
These requirements are in addition to any other NETBIOS
requirements for other programs that may be running at
the same time.
o If characters sent to an application from the Pop-Up
Keyboard or Handwriting Pad appear to have their case
(uppercase characters vs. lowercase characters) reversed,
ensure that the Caps Lock key on your physical keyboard
is not in the locked position.
o The commands listed on pages 118 and 119 of the Pen
for OS/2 User's Guide should indicate the following:
CLOSE WINDOW - This command works for
Presentation Manager programs
only.
MAXIMIZE WINDOW - This command is not supported
in WIN-OS/2.
MAXIMIZE or RESTORE - "
MINIMIZE WINDOW - "
MINIMIZE or RESTORE - "
OPEN - This command works for
Presentation Manager programs
only.
OS/2 APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
APPLICATION NOTES:
AutoCAD** for OS/2
------------------
- AutoCAD for OS/2 might make a copy of a portion of the
Handwriting Pad, Pop-Up Keyboard, or Pen Tool Bar graphics
if these tools are placed over the drawing area. To avoid
this problem, position the tools away from the drawing area.
CMMouse*
--------
- Do not use the Pop-Up Keyboard to input into CMMouse
pop-up boxes; however, you can use the Pop-Up Keyboard
to input into a 3270-emulation screen even when
CMMouse is active.
- To map CMMouse RIGHT Button Usage to mouse button 2
emulation on the pen, change all BUTTON RIGHT
statements in the button definition files (.BDF) to
BUTTON MIDDLE statements.
Lotus 123G** for OS/2
---------------------
If the Pen Tool Bar is positioned over the application
window, double-tapping on the Pen Tool Bar icon might not
close the Pen Tool Bar. To avoid this problem, either select
"Close" from the Pen Tool Bar system menu, or position
the Pen Tool Bar away from the title bar and the menu bar of
the application.
Lotus Freelance Graphics** for OS/2
-----------------------------------
If the Pen Tool Bar is positioned over the application
window, double-tapping on the Pen Tool Bar icon might not
close the Pen Tool Bar. To avoid this problem, select "Close"
from the Pen Tool Bar system menu.
Lotus Notes** for OS/2
----------------------
If you assign the "MAXIMIZE or RESTORE" command or the
"MINIMIZE or RESTORE" command to a gesture, the action
will be performed on the outside window even if the
gesture is drawn over the inside window.
Microsoft Word** for OS/2
-------------------------
- The system-supplied commands that can be assigned to a
gesture might not be functional in this application.
- The options on the system menu might not be functional
when using the pen or the mouse.
WIN-OS/2 APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
o You may experience performance problems in some
seamless windows applications. There are no known
performance problems with full-screen WIN-OS/2 applications.
o If you are having difficulty double-tapping in a
WIN-OS/2 session, run the program DCLICK.EXE.
DCLICK.EXE is provided with Pen for OS/2. It is in-
stalled in the directory where Pen for OS/2 is in-
stalled. Start the DCLICK program from an OS/2 window
prompt.
o If you change your mouse settings to left-handed (using
the Mouse object in the System Setup folder), then a pen
tap in a WIN-OS/2 full-screen session is equivalent to
a mouse button 2 click. To avoid this problem, change
the mouse settings to right-handed.
APPLICATION NOTES:
Harvard Graphics** for Windows
------------------------------
- Harvard Graphics for Windows might make a copy of a portion
of the Handwriting Pad, Pop-Up Keyboard, or Pen Tool Bar
graphics if these tools are placed over the drawing area.
If this occurs, position the tools away from the drawing area.
DOS APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
o In DOS window applications, which process relative mouse
motion (rather than absolute mouse position), if the DOS
setting MOUSE_EXCLUSIVE_ACCESS is "On", the pen cannot
be used to emulate a mouse.
