  2.    Extended attributes are a large part of OS/2. They can be used to organize
  3.    your work and thereby increase your productivity. EA:s can also be used
  4.    internally by applications to store data file information. The WPS uses
  5.    extended attributes for all file system objects to store object data.

  7.    Although extended attributes are a vital part of WPS, and can help you
  8.    manage your desktop and files, some extended attributes cause can problems
  9.    when being moved to another system.

  11.    For instance:
  12.       .ASSOCTABLE
  13.       .CLASSINFO
  14.       .PREVNAME
  15.  
  16.    Less critical, but which are known to create annoyances:
  17.       .ICONPOS
  18.       .LONGNAME

  20.    A utility called EAUTIL is shipped with OS/2 which can help you to strip,
  21.    extract, apply and merge extended attributes. The only thing missing is a
  22.    way to filter out extended attributes you don't want to extract.

  24.    dump_ea does just that. It stores a file's extended atttibutes in a file
  25.    format understood by OS/2's EAUTIL. However, dump_ea can only extract the
  26.    EA:s - not reapply them. When you have dumped the EA data, simply use
  27.    EAUTIL to reapply the extended attributes to the data file.
