The Object Management Group defined in April 1995 the third piece of the
OMA Common Facilities, which in contrast to the COSS Services, are
services for components on a higher level. The COSS Services are a
collection of basic system services very similar to what a classical
client/server middleware is defining. The Common Facilities are dealing
offering services in two dimensions as shown in Figure 39. There are
horizontal facilities dealing with services important to all components to
interoperate. These facilities are defining standards for user
interfaces, information management, systems management and task
management. In addition to that, there will be defined vertical
facilities that offer special services to industries such as health or
finance.

Figure 39. Common Facilities

The CORBA User Interface Common Facility is covering the compound document
issues, including scripting. OpenDoc was submitted to OMG by CI Labs and
Apple. It is the only proposal for that user interface standard. The
Information Management Common Facilities is dealing with compound document
storage and data interchange as defined in the OpenDoc. The decision of
the user interface standard is expected for March 1996. So CORBA and
OpenDoc are not two different stories; they fit together perfectly.
