OpenDoc for OS/2 README
-----------------------
OpenDoc for OS/2 provides the ability to create and save a
single document by embedding several different "components"
(such as graphics, text, and multimedia) into it.
Included in this release is the ability to create compound
OpenDoc documents using embedding, linking, drag/drop, and
scripting functions.
This file contains information you need to run OpenDoc
and includes additional information not found in the
product documentation. Multimedia OpenDoc for OS/2 is
available in a separate package; it is NOT included in this
one.
This README file is divided into the following categories:
- Before You Install OpenDoc for OS/2

Before You Install OpenDoc for OS/2
-----------------------------------
Hardware and Software Requirements
----------------------------------
- The OS/2 Warp FixPak XR_W016 must be installed before you
can install OpenDoc for OS/2.
- The OpenDoc for OS/2 base package is 9 MB in size.
You need 13 MB of free space available before you
can unpack the opendoc.bbs file. To install the files,
you need an additional 21 MB of free space.
- OpenDoc can be installed on an Intel 486 with 8 MB of memory
and 33 MHz. However, a Pentium with 16 MB of memory and
75 MHz is highly recommended.
- The SWAPPER.DAT file might grow during this installation.
To do a full installation on a system with 8 MB of RAM, at
least 16 MB of disk space should be available to SWAPPER.DAT.
Systems with more RAM require less disk space. (For
example, a system with 16 MB RAM requires 10 MB of
disk space for a full installation).
Installation Restrictions
-------------------------
- If a previous version of OpenDoc has been installed, it is
recommended that you format your OS/2 boot partition and
reinstall OS/2 before installing this version of OpenDoc.
*****************************************************
WARNING
*****************************************************
If you have a pre-release version of OpenDoc installed on
your machine you MUST REMOVE IT before installing this
feature.
*******************************************************
- The Software Installer will not display if the environment
variable "remote_install_state" is in the CONFIG.SYS file
(outside of a CID install). If the Software Installer fails
to display, edit your CONFIG.SYS file. If the variable
exists, delete it. You will have to reboot your system before
continuing the installation.
Opendoc for OS/2 Installation Instructions
------------------------------------------
Unpacking the opendoc.bbs File
------------------------------
Before you install Opendoc you must first unpack the
the opendoc.bbs file if you downloaded the file from a
bulletin board. You need at least 13 MB of free space
available to unpack the opendoc.bbs file.
For example, if the opendoc.bbs file is on drive D
and you want to unpack the files to drive E, type
the following command at an OS/2 command prompt and
then press Enter:
unpack2 d:\opendoc.bbs e: /c
This creates an e:\openpack directory. You install
OpenDoc for OS/2 from this directory.
Starting the Installation
-------------------------
To begin the installation, type the following commands
at an OS/2 command prompt and press Enter after each:
e:
cd \openpack
Then type the following command and press Enter:
instod
NOTE: The files unpacked from the opendoc.bbs file will be
transferred to the directory you specify during installation.
You need an additional 21 MB of free space on the drive
you specify in order to successfully install Opendoc for OS/2.
CID-Enabled Installation
------------------------
To CID-enable the OpenDoc for OS/2 installation, you
must do the following:
1. Create a response file that contains the following keywords:
--------------------------
FILE = X:\OPENDOC
COMP = Product Folder
COMP = OpenDoc Base
CFGUPDATE = AUTO
OVERWRITE = YES
__________________________
where X is the boot drive.
NOTE: A sample response file, OPENDOC.RSP, is provided
in the OPENPACK directory (where you unpacked the
opendoc.bbs file). This file is also located in the
\IBMOS2\OPENPAK directory if you have the Developer
Connection for OS/2. You should copy this file from
the CD to the OPENPACK directory on your hard file before
proceeding with step 2.
2. At an OS/2 command prompt, change to the OPENPACK directory,
and then type the following command-line parameters to invoke
CID:
NOTE: You must supply values for the items enclosed in
angle brackets. Other items must be typed exactly as
shown.
EPFINSTS /A:I
/C:<DRIVE:\PATH>\OPENDOC.ICF
/L1:<DRIVE:\PATH\ERROR LOG FILE NAME>
/L2:<DRIVE:\PATH\HISTORY LOG FILE NAME>
/O:DRIVE
/P:"OpenDoc for OS/2"
/R:<DRIVE:\PATH\RESPONSE FILE NAME>
/S:<DRIVE:\SOURCE PATH>
/X
For more information on CID-enabled installation, please refer
to the "Software Installer Document Version 1.3 for OS/2."
Uninstalling OpenDoc for OS/2
-----------------------------
If you want to uninstall OpenDoc for OS/2 version 1.0, you must
perform the following steps in order:
1. Uninstall Multimedia OpenDoc for OS/2 if it is installed.
(See the Multimedia OpenDoc for OS/2 "readme.mm" file for
more information).
2. Close all open OpenDoc documents.
3. Delete the "OpenDoc Templates" and the "OpenDoc Shell
Plugins" folders from the Desktop.
4. Delete the PARTREG.BTO, AVLSRVR.BTO, OPENDOC.INI, and
OSA.INI files (if they exist) from the OS2 directory on
your boot drive.
5. Remove all references to OPENDOC from the CONFIG.SYS
file (these references are all clause removals).
6. Reboot your computer.
7. If you installed via the Developer Connection CDs, select
the Developer Connection Object on your Desktop and find the
object for OpenDoc for OS/2. When you double-click on it,
the Software Installer version for OpenDoc is displayed.
8. If you installed from a package on a bulletin board service,
go to the OPENPACK directory and type:
instod
The Software Installer version for OpenDoc is displayed.
9. Select "Continue" on the first screen. On the second screen,
select "Delete and Re-install" and then click on the
"Continue" push button. Finally, on the last screen select
"OpenDoc Base" and then click on the "Delete" push button.
OpenDoc for OS/2 Considerations
-------------------------------
After you install OpenDoc for OS/2, you should be aware of the
following considerations:
GRAPHICS PART
- Some actions in the graphics part cannot be undone.
- When you open the graphics part in another window you
should only edit its content; editing embedded parts
is not fully supported.
- If you have a problem updating a graphics part drawing,
you can refresh it by using the menu item "Refresh" or by
typing Alt+R.
- If your drag button is set as mouse button 1, a graphics
part moves embedded parts if you try to resize them.
TEXT PART
- If your drag button is set as mouse button 1, a text part
moves embedded parts if you try to resize them.
- The amount of text the text part can handle depends on the
amount of memory you have. This is a temporary restriction
for this release.
PAGE LAYOUT PART
- The menu bar choices are not always correct when you
reactivate the page layout part. Click on the menu bar again
to display the correct page layout part menu.
- The page layout part "Snap to grid" option "snaps" (places it
along the closest page layout grid lines) existing embedded
objects as well as any new ones.
- The page layout part does not always clip or repaint the
toolbar or scroll bars correctly. Refresh the page
layout part by changing the size of the Document Shell
window.
- If nothing happens when you click on icons on the toolbar,
the selected operations are not available at the time.
- When you attempt to rotate a page layout part, press and hold
mouse button 1 rather than clicking it.
- The page layout part does not support clipboard and drag/drop
operations for multiple selection of embedded objects.
- If you change the page size for a page layout part, embedded
parts are also sized.
- In order to scroll the page layout part you must first click
in the document area.
- The page layout part supports up to 29 pages of letter size.
This number can change depending on the size of the form
you use.
- The page layout part does not always refresh its drawing
area.
- Print the page layout part by using the "Print" menu bar
option instead of dragging the page layout part to a
Workplace Shell printer object. This ensures that the document
prints on the correct printer.
- When the page layout part is the root part and has an
embedded graphics part, any embedded parts in the graphics
part cannot be printed.
SCRIPT EDITOR
- When you drag and drop a new file over an existing one, the
new file replaces the existing one without prompting you to
save it.
OBJECT REXX
- Object REXX does not currently support recording of scripts.
- Object REXX does not support object specifiers of test key
format (=, <>, <, <=, >. >=).
- Object REXX does not support object specifiers of range key
format. For example, an event such as:
SA[window[1],window[4]]~Close
is interpreted as:
SA[window[1]]~Close
- Object REXX does not support multiple data types for a
parameter to an event.
- Object REXX does not support parameters of type Insert|onLoc.
- Object REXX creates an empty file when executing the Lines()
function for a non-existent file.
- Object REXX does not support multiple events with the same
name and in different suites (for example, Open is in both
the Required and Core suites). It always defaults to the
first one.
PERFORMANCE
- This version of OpenDoc has not been completely
performance-tuned. This is planned for a future release.
MISCELLANEOUS
- Documents created using previous versions of OpenDoc cannot
be used with this version.
- Always save a document before you attempt to rotate an
embedded part, especially if a text part is involved.
Rotating parts is not fully supported.
- Always wait until one document has completely started
before starting another one.
- Before you shutdown OS/2, ensure that you close all OpenDoc
documents. If you don't do this, it is likely that the
documents might display as templates the next time you start
the operating system. If this happens, display the
Settings notebooks for the documents and then deselect the
"Template" check box.
- The part DLL cannot be replaced or deleted until all the
OpenDoc documents using it have been closed.
- The part registration database is contained in a file
named PARTREG.BTO, which is located in the OS2 directory of
the boot drive. Occasionally, this file might become
corrupted and cause strange behavior in OpenDoc. To
fix this problem, delete the PARTREG.BTO file and
re-register any parts. The standard parts shipped with
OpenDoc can be registered by typing and entering the
following commands at an OS/2 command prompt:
ODINST STANDARD
ODINST MULTIMEDIA (if you have multimedia installed)
- If you create links in your documents, they are saved
in a file named AVLSRVR.BTO, which is located in the OS2
directory of the boot drive. Occasionally, links may
fail for no apparent reason. If so, the AVLSRVR.BTO file
might be corrupted. To fix this problem, delete the
AVLSRVR.BTO file. Unfortunately, this also deletes
all your links. It is highly recommended that you
frequently back up the AVSSHELL.BTO file.
NOTE: The AVLSRVR.BTO file also becomes corrupted if you
power-off while OpenDoc is running.
- If you hide the OpenDoc "Properties" window, it cannot be
retrieved. Close the document from the Window List
and start it again.
- Whenever you close a document, it is automatically
saved without prompting. If you do not want to save
any changes, click on "Revert to Saved" before attempting
to close the document.
- When you click on the following menu items: Open As, Icon,
Tree, Details, or Window, the window displayed is a blank
entry in the Window List.
