  4. This dialog is where the name of the file to open is specified.  There are four 
  5. areas of interest on this dialog: 
  6.  
  7. o Format area 
  8. o Files area 
  9. o Directories area 
  10. o Pushbutton area

  12. The "format area" is where you select the format of the file you wish to load. 
  13. If you want the Image Toolkit to determine the format for you, select 
  14. "(Determine the file format)". 
  15.  
  16. The "files area" is where you see the files in the current directory. 
  17. Double-clicking on a file in this list is the same as selecting the file and 
  18. then selecting the "Open" pushbutton. 
  19.  
  20. The "directories area" is where you see both the subdirectories beneath the 
  21. current directory and the available drives from which to choose. 
  22. Double-clicking on a file in this list is the same as selecting the directory 
  23. and then selecting the "Open" pushbutton.

  25. The "pushbutton area" contains the pushbuttons corresponding to the available 
  26. actions that can be performed on this dialog.

  28. "Open" will either opens the currently selected or entered file, refreshes the 
  29. file list with the specified filename mask, or changes to the specified 
  30. directory.  The order of precedence is as follows:  if a filename has been 
  31. entered or selected and does not contain any "wildcard" characters, this will 
  32. attempt to open the file and load the image contained therein; if the filename 
  33. does contain any "wildcard"  characters, this will refresh the file list using 
  34. the specified filename mask; else, this will change the current directory to 
  35. the one entered or specified.

  37. If nothing is entered and nothing is selected, it is taken as though "*.*" were 
  38. entered in the filename area. 
  39.  
  40. "Properties" will display the format-specific properties dialog, allowing you 
  41. to specify any format-specific options to be used upon loading. It is the 
  42. decision of the format handler to use the specified options or not.

  44. "Cancel" will return you to the previous window with no action taken.

  96. This dialog is where you specify the printer and the printing options to be 
  97. used.  There are five areas of interest on this dialog:

  102. o Printer page

  105. The "printer list" is where the currently installed printers are listed, with 
  106. the default printer selected when the dialog is initially displayed. 
  107.  
  108. The "alignment area" is where you can "snap" the image to a particular side or 
  109. the center in both the horizontal and the vertical directions. 
  110.  
  111. The "options area" is where you can select any additional options to apply to 
  112. the print job. 
  113.  
  114. Print to file       By checking this checkbox, you can enter a file name to 
  115.                     which the printer output will be spooled.  To obtain a 
  116.                     hardcopy from this file, you simply need to copy the file 
  117.                     to the printer. 
  118.  
  119. The "printer page" is a depiction of the printable area for the printer you 
  120. have selected.  Here you can manipulate the image by using mouse button 1. 
  121. When the pointer is in the middle of the image, depressing the button will 
  122. allow you to change the position on the printer page, while depressing the 
  123. button when the pointer is positioned on one of the image edges allows you to 
  124. change the size of the image in the direction corresponding to the edge the 
  125. pointer is on.

  127. Selecting a new printer in the printer list automatically resizes the printer 
  128. page.

  130. The "pushbutton area" contains the pushbuttons corresponding to the available 
  131. actions that can be performed on this dialog.

  133. "Print" will attempt to print the image using the options specified on this 
  134. dialog on the selected printer.

  137. you to specify any printer-specific options to be used when printing.

  146. This is the main window where all actions are performed.  There are three areas 
  147. of interest (annotated in the picture above):

  149. o The action bar 
  150. o The display area 
  151. o The miniature view

  153. The action bar is where all of the actions are selected from. By moving the 
  154. cursor to an item and pressing F1, you can get help for that menuitem.

  156. The display area is where the image is displayed.  It is this area that is 
  157. manipulated by subsequently selecting any of the appropriate menuitems. 
  158. Actions such as saving and printing can be performed. 
  159.  
  160. (The miniature view is not used at this moment) The miniature view is used for 
  161. drag-n-drop purposes.  When used with applications that support the private 
  162. format used by the Image Window, you can copy the contents of the display area 
  163. to other appplications without going through the clipboard.  The advantage of 
  164. doing this is that you don't lose what is currently in the clipboard.

  169. Use the "Dither options" dialog to set the dithering options to be used for 
  170. this window.  On the dialog, three spinbuttons allow you to choose the 
  171. dithering pattern type, size, and the darkness to be used when dithering an 
  172. image.

  182. Use the "Image Information" dialog to get information about the currently 
  183. displayed image.  The following fields are currently displayed:

  185. o Format name

  187. o Width 
  188. o Height 
  189. o Color planes 
  190. o Bits per pel

  192. The format name field describes the format that the image was in when it was 
  193. originally loaded from the disk where it resides.

  195. The format author field specifies the author(s) of the format handler used to 
  196. load the image from the disk.

  198. The width field specifies the image width in pels.

  200. The height field specifies the image height in pels. 
  201.  
  202. The color planes field specifies the number of color planes used for the image. 
  203. This is a display adapter dependent number, usually.

  205. The bits per pel field specifies the number of bits used to describe the color 
  206. of one pel.  The total number of colors in any bitmap is, therefore, 2 raised 
  207. to the power of this number.  The common values are 1, 2, 4, 8, yielding 2, 4, 
  208. 16, and 256 colors, respectively.

  309. For LAN printers, the following conditions must be met:

  311. There must be defined a local queue associated with a local printer definition. 
  312. The printer definition must use the same printer driver that is used on the 
  313. server for the printer in question. 
  314. The port number (e.g. LPT1, LPT2, etc.) specified in the queue must match that 
  315. which is used on the "NET USE" command.

  317. When PM sees an application spooling a print job to the local queue, it 
  318. determines that this is to be printed on a LAN printer by the matching port 
  319. numbers, so it sends the print job over the LAN to the server automatically.

  446. Dithering is the process of converting a color or greyscale image to monochrome 
  447. while preserving the contrast of the individual colors in the original image. 
  448.  
  449. The dithering process involves overlaying a two-dimensional pattern of 
  450. weighting values on top of the original image in a quilt-like fashion.  If the 
  451. average of the color in the image is greater than that of the corresponding 
  452. element in the dithering pattern, the proper pel in the destination image is 
  453. set. 
  454.  
  455. The image colors are averaged with each component (red, green, and blue) 
  456. weighted according to the natural eye sensitivity to that component.

  461. There are four dithering patterns that IBrow can use - diagonal, diamond, 
  462. circle, and square.  Each pattern comes in 3 sizes - 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8.  Use 
  463. the spinbuttons on the dialog to select the values to be used when dithering.
