MIG2
MIG2 is a 32 bit PM based migration aid and program launch utility. It re-
quires OS/2 Warp or OS/2 2.x. This utility was made to help migrate simple
programs to the desktop. It does not replace anything - it is simply an
alternative to using the migration program or the templates that comes with
OS/2. It can also be used as an icon browser or a program launcher. It
consists of one file - MIG2.EXE.
MIG2 will only Launch or Migrate executable programs which have an .EXE,
.COM, .BAT, or .CMD extension. If you attempt to migrate a program to the
desktop and there is already a desktop object with the same name MIG2 will not
do it. For instance, if you have a desktop program object named (visible name
underneath icon) Clock and you use MIG2 to select an executable file named
CLOCK.EXE and press the migrate button - it won't work. MIG2 sets the default
name, during migration, to the files name minus its extension. Since CLOCK
is already a desktop object name, MIG2 just beeps at you. Of course, you could
check the Prompt check box then press Migrate. Then fill in the Object name
field in the Executable object parameters box to something different
( like Clock2 ), then press the Migrate button.
While the migration program that comes packaged with OS/2 is adequate and
very useful it is also slow and tedious at times. To use it to put most simple
programs on the desktop is 'overkill'. Using the templates is much quicker and
easier once you get the hang of it. However, to put a program icon on the
desktop using templates takes several steps. Open the templates folder, drag
off a program object, type in the path and programs executable file name, and
set the program name as it will appear on the desktop. This is generally all
that has to be done for 75% or more of the programs you put on the desktop. Of
course we all know how we can tinker with other settings in the notebook all
day long. MIG2 is simple. Activate the program, select the appropriate
executable file, then either press the Launch or Migrate button. Most of the
time that is all that is needed. MIG2 will also display the icon associated for
all files as you scroll through or select them. If there is no icon included
in the file it will show the system default icon for that particular file type.
MIG2 has 4 menu selections that can be accessed by clicking in the upper
left corner of the main window on the icon. You can optionally save the start
up path (program search path) or the start up path for the Icon Search Box
(icon search path). You can also optionally set file masks for either. File
masks could be for example - *.EXE or *.ICO. They don't have to be set at all
but if you have a ton of files in the directory you are searching it could
speed things up a bit.
On the main window there are also several settings that can be utilized. At
the top you have the choice (same for migrating or launching) of OS/2 Full
Screen, Dos Full Screen, Windows Full Screen, or Default. Default is the
default setting. If you select an executable file in the Files list box
with the Default radio button setting on the MIG2 program will automatically
determine if it is a DOS, OS/2, PM, or WINDOWS program. If you Launch or
migrate a DOS or OS2 program it will default to a WINDOW. If it is a WINDOWS
program it will default to a common seamless session. If you know ahead of
time what type of program it is you can override the default using the radio
buttons at the top. Of course, PM programs are of one type only.
There is also a Prompt checkbox at the bottom. Whether, you are Migrating
or Launching - having this box checked will present you with a dialog box. If
you are launching a program it will present you with an entry field to type in
command line arguments. If you are migrating it will give you a chance to type
in a different name to be used for the object, additional arguments, working
directory, or a different icon (.ICO) to be associated for the program. You
can also use the Find button to visually search and browse through your .ICO
files instead of having to type in a path and file name. Both Prompts also
have a No Autoclose radio check box. This may be checked for some command line
programs or batch files that do their job and you need to see their output. If
not checked ( the default ) some programs do their thing and close before you
see what it does. This only works for OS/2 and DOS windowed sessions.
It is actually much easier and intuitive to use this program than it is to
describe it. Therefore the documentation is minimal. Play with it and you'll
figure it out much quicker than reading this. it is a non-destructive program.
It doesn't create, modify, or erase any files except to make an entry in the
OS2.INI file - to save program parameters. If you put an icon on the desktop
and decide you don't want it then just drop it in the shredder or delete it.
Deleting the icon will NOT delete the associated file.
Simply select an executable file, press the Migrate button, and the icon
will be put on the desktop. Or press the Launch button and it will execute the
program. Most of the time that will do it. Some times you will want to change
the default program type radio buttons at the top or set the prompt check box
at the bottom depending on the program and your desires. One note: SOME
programs, due to how the programmers wrote them, require that they be activated
in the directory they are installed - Whether they are on the path or not.
While that won't matter while you Launch them, migrating them would neces-
sitate setting the working directory parameter either before or after
migration. Of course, if you know this ahead of time set the Prompt check
box on, then press the Migrate button, then type in the path in the Working
Directory field of the Executable object parameters prompt box. Finally, press
the Migrate button. Whew! It's a lot harder describing it here than doing it!
That's about it.
Registration is a paltry $20.00. Upon registration you'll receive a postcard
with the appropriate code to get rid of the ugly Shareware "About MIG2" screen.
Upgrades or bug fixes will of course be posted on Several BBS's. Suggestions
