  25. The Microsoft Diagnostics (MSD) utility is designed to assist
  26. Microsoft customers and Product Support Services (PSS) technicians in
  27. identifying system configuration information such as the BIOS and
  28. video card type and manufacturer, processor(s) installed, I/O port
  29. status, operating system version, environment settings, hardware
  30. devices attached, and additional software running concurrently with
  31. MSD. This utility is used when Microsoft PSS needs information to
  32. diagnose and solve problems with Microsoft products.

  35. INSTALLATION
  36. ============

  38. Hard Disk System
  39. ----------------
  40.  
  41. To install MSD on a hard disk system, do the following:
  42.  
  43. 1. Place the enclosed disk in drive A.
  44.  
  45. 2. At the DOS prompt, type the following and press the ENTER key
  46.  
  47.       copy a:\msd.exe <pathname>
  48.  
  49.    where <pathname> is the location of your root directory. For
  50.    example, type the following and press the ENTER key:
  51.  
  52.       copy a:\msd.exe c:\
  53.  
  54. Dual Floppy Disk System
  55. -----------------------
  56.  
  57. To install MSD on a dual floppy disk system, do the following:
  58.  
  59. 1. Place your DOS boot disk (system disk) in drive A and the enclosed
  60.    Microsoft Diagnostics (MSD) Utility disk in drive B.
  61.  
  62. 2. At the DOS prompt, type the following and press the ENTER key:
  63.  
  64.       copy b:\msd.exe a:
  65.  
  66.  
  67. USING THE MICROSOFT DIAGNOSTICS UTILITY
  68. =======================================
  69.  
  70. The MSD utility (MSD.EXE) runs in DOS and the DOS compatibility box of
  71. OS/2. To start MSD, do the following:
  72.  
  73. 1. At the DOS prompt, change to the root directory (where you
  74.    installed MSD.EXE).
  75.  
  76. 2. Type "msd" (without the quotation marks) and press the ENTER key.
  77.    (For monochrome, black-and-white, and LCD screens, type "msd /b"
  78.    and press ENTER.)

  80. 3. The program presents an introduction screen. To continue, press any
  81.    key.
  82.  
  83. MSD then presents a Main Menu screen split into two sections. The
  84. upper section presents a summary of information that the utility has
  85. gathered from your system. For additional information on any category,
  86. move the highlight bar (using the arrow keys) to any category and
  87. press the ENTER key. A dialog box appears that presents detailed
  88. information for that category. You can quickly choose any category by
  89. pressing the ALT key and the highlighted letter corresponding to the
  90. category you want. Return to the Main Menu screen by pressing the ESC
  91. key.

  93. The following is a brief explanation of the categories in the first
  94. section:

  99.      BIOS               Displays the BIOS manufacturer, date, version,
  100.                         and type
  101.      
  102.      Processor          Displays the processor type and math
  103.                         coprocessor, if installed
  104.      
  105.      Memory             Displays a map of physical memory from 768K to
  106.                         1 MB and information concerning the
  107.                         configuration of RAM and ROM in your computer
  108.                         system
  109.      
  110.      Video              Shows your video card's manufacturer and
  111.                         model, BIOS version, memory, and current video
  112.                         mode
  113.      
  114.      Network            Detects whether a network is MS-NET or
  115.                         compatible, or Novell
  116.      
  117.      Mouse              Shows the DOS mouse driver version number,
  118.                         mouse type, and other information concerning
  119.                         the mouse
  120.      
  121.      Game Adapter       Dynamically displays game card status for up
  122.                         to two game devices or joysticks
  123.      
  124.      CD-ROM             Displays the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions
  125.                         (MSCDEX.EXE) version number and drive letter
  126.      
  127.      Operating System   Displays the operating system version number
  128.                         and path from which MSD was run
  129.      
  130.      Parallel Ports     Dynamically displays the status of installed
  131.                         parallel ports and their port addresses
  132.      
  133.      Serial Ports       Dynamically displays the status of active
  134.                         serial ports and their current configurations
  135.      
  136.      Disk Drives        Scans all local and logical drives and
  137.                         displays the total and available bytes
  138.      
  139.      IRQ Status         Shows the current hardware interrupt, IRQ,
  140.                         status
  141.      
  142.      Environment        Displays environment variables
  143.      
  144.      AUTOEXEC.BAT       Lists the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  145.      
  146.      CONFIG.SYS         Lists the CONFIG.SYS file

  148. The lower section of the MSD screen includes additional functions you
  149. can use with your system, as follows:

  154.      Resident Programs  Displays the names of programs loaded in RAM
  155.                         at the time MSD was executed, their locations,
  156.                         and their sizes; programs may be loaded into
  157.                         multiple segments of RAM and have multiple
  158.                         entries in the table
  159.      
  160.      Device Table       Displays software and hardware device drivers
  161.                         installed; these include default devices, such
  162.                         as COM1 or LPT1, and user-installed devices
  163.                         loaded from the CONFIG.SYS file, such as
  164.                         HIMEM.SYS or EMM386.SYS
  165.      
  166.      Printer Test       Prints a page to test the connection between
  167.                         the computer and either a TTY or PostScript-
  168.                         type printer
  169.      
  170.      Generate Report    Prints a "faxable" report to a normal TTY
  171.                         printer or to a file
  172.      
  173.      File Viewer        Views text files by entering the path and
  174.                         filename
  175.      
  176.      Memory Browser     Searches selected ROM and RAM areas for search
  177.                         strings such as "Copyright" and "Version"
  178.      
  179.      About              Displays MSD version number and copyright
  180.                         information
  181.      
  182.      Exit               Exits MSD

  185. USES FOR THE MICROSOFT DIAGNOSTICS UTILITY
  186. ==========================================

  188. The Microsoft Diagnostics utility is designed to be used in one of
  189. three ways:
  190.  
  191. 1. Over the telephone, you can report the information MSD displays to
  192.    the Microsoft PSS technician assisting you in solving the problem
  193.    you are experiencing.
  194.  
  195. 2. You can fax or mail Microsoft PSS a report generated by MSD. The
  196.    Generate Reports feature will print the information to any TTY
  197.    printer. Be sure to send the report to the attention of the
  198.    technician assisting you.
  199.  
  200.    The mailing address is below. Microsoft's fax number is
  201.    (206) 883-8101. Include the following attention line on the fax
  202.    cover sheet:

  204.       ATTN: PSS, <technician's name, building, group>

  206. 3. You can send us a report file generated by MSD. The Generate
  207.    Reports feature will print a configuration report to a file. You
  208.    can copy this file to a floppy disk and send it to the technician
  209.    helping you or send the file electronically by modem.
