INSTALLATION
────────────
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
───────────────────
The Guidelines Editor requires that you have OS/2 Version 2.1 or
higher already installed on your computer. For information about setting
up OS/2 on your computer, see the instructions in your OS/2 package.
The minimum hardware requirements for running Guidelines are the same
as for OS/2 itself. However the recommended configuration
for Guidelines development is as follows:
■ 486 DX 33Mhz PC
■ SVGA display card and the appropriate monitor
■ 16MB of memory
■ 210MB of disk
Guidelines assumes that you have a supported C++ compiler and the OS/2
Toolkit installed on your hard drive. While applications can be designed
without a C++ compiler, the source code generated cannot be compiled
into an executable unless one is present.
COMPILERS / PLATFORMS
──────────────────────
Version 3.2 of Guidelines supports the following compilers:-
IBM C++ 2.01
IBM C++ 3.00 VisualAge
Borland C++ 4.0
Borland C++ 4.5
In line with current policy of supporting the latest versions of third party
software, JBA will discontinue support for IBM C++ 2.01 and Borland 4.0
compilers six months from this release (ie. in first quarter 1996).
For the same reasons, JBA will discontinue support for the OS/2 2.1
platform six months from this release (ie. in first quarter 1996).
*********************************************************
PLEASE NOTE: JBA RECOMMEND THE USE OF OS/2 3.0 WARP OR
LATER. Guidelines works on OS/2 2.1, but reported problems which
occur on this version will not be fixed unless they are reproducible
using WARP.

INSTALLATION
────────────
Preliminary
───────────
You may encounter unusual behaviour if you combine old and new versions
of Guidelines. To avoid this, it is recommended that before installing
Guidelines, you should manually remove all references to any existing
version of Guidelines from your CONFIG.SYS file (typically any references
to GUIDE or CSS), remove your Guidelines folder and template, and then
delete your old \GUIDE and \CSS directories. This will ensure that
Guidelines does not encounter any problems with old versions of controls
that may be left over should Guidelines be installed over an existing version.
You can delete your \GUIDE and \CSS directories from within the Drives
object on Workplace Shell by using the Delete option on their popup
menus or dragging and dropping them onto the Shredder. You can delete
your Guidelines folder and the Guidelines template (in your Templates
folder) in the same way.
Installing from ZIP file
────────────────────────
If you are installing the shareware release of Guidelines, ensure that
you have obtained all of the archives (there are four) from a reliable
source. The shareware release of Guidelines is available on CompuServe
in the files section of the OS2AVEN forum, on FIDONET on any site
worldwide that carries the file distribution backbone from Fernwood
(1:141/109.0 and 1:141/209.0), and on the Hobbes FTP site
(ftp.hobbes.nmsu.edu).
Unarchive the archives into an empty directory and run the install
program INSTALL.EXE from that directory.
Installing from Diskette
────────────────────────
To install Guidelines, insert the first installation disk into your
floppy drive (drive A:) and type:
A:\INSTALL
at a native OS/2 command prompt.
Please refer to the main install document for general installation
instructions. This is located on the first diskette and may be viewed
by typing the following command:
VIEW A:\INSTALL.INF
Installing from an IBM AS/400
─────────────────────────────
If you are installing Guidelines from an IBM AS/400 via PC Support the
installation instructions are contained in an on-line document. To view
the document enter the following command from your PC:
VIEW I:\GUI_INST.ALL\INSTALL.INF
where I: is your PC Support shared folder drive and GUI_INST.ALL is
where the Guidelines installation packs reside on that folder.
Installation Options
────────────────────
NOTE:
You may also choose to disable support for certain compilers. Only support
for the compilers you use need to be installed, clear the checkbox next
to a particular compiler name to prevent any files for that compiler
being installed. Note that VisualAge and Borland 4.5 are mandatory for
CSet 2.01 and Borland 4.0 respectively. This is because Guidelines requires
these for its own objects at design and runtime.
The environment paths within Guidelines may require updating after
installation, especially if both IBM or both Borland compilers were loaded.
Please refer to the README.OS2 (IBM) or README.WIN (BORLAND)
documents for further detail.
Icons and Bitmaps
─────────────────
Once Guidelines has been installed, you can extract the icons and bitmaps
(.ICO and .BMP files) by selecting the "Install Images" icon in the
Guidelines folder. If you wish to extract icons for Microsoft Windows
development, select the "Install Windows Images" icon - this will extract
icons which have the extension .ICW and bitmaps which have the extension
.BMW.
There are over 400 icon and bitmap files in each archive.
The Windows Icons are shipped as part of the Windows Code Enable pack.
RUNNING GUIDELINES
──────────────────
After a successful installation you may invoke Guidelines by typing "Guide"
and depressing the Enter key at a command prompt, or via the work place
object created (optionally) during the install.
─────────────────────────────────────────────
─ EXTRA INSTRUCTIONS FOR - NEW IMAGE EXTENSION ─────────────────
─────────────────────────────────────────────
The Image DLLs for OS2 and Windows are copied to {GUIDE}\OS2\DLL and
{GUIDE}\WIN\DLL respectively. They have to be in separate directories
as some DLLs have the same name for both environments. Ensure that
{GUIDE}\OS2\DLL is on the LIBPATH of the OS2 Config.Sys and
{GUIDE}\WIN\DLL is on the WINDOWS path.
Color Installation (OS2)
The following is needed if image scanning is required...
Copy {GUIDE}\OS2DRV\ASPIDRV.SYS to C:\OS2
Add the following to the Config.Sys file:
BASEDEV=OS2ASPI.DMD
BASEDEV=AHA154X.ADD /V /ET A:0 /!DM:2
DEVICE=C:\OS2\ASPIDRV.SYS
This loads the OS2 ASPI Device Manager and Adaptec AHA 1542 SCSI Card
ADD driver. The last parameter of line 2 stops the OS2 Disk Manager from
accessing SCSI device 2. Change this for the SCSI ID of the Scanner / Printer
installed. Be very careful when changing the Config.Sys if the hard disk uses
the same SCSI controller. Setting a line incorrectly could stop the system
from recognising the hard disk.
Color Installation (Windows)
The following is needed if image scanning is required...
Create a directory C:\ASPI
Copy {GUIDE}\WINDRV\ASPI2DOS.SYS to C:\ASPI
Copy {GUIDE}\WINDRV\ASPI4DOS.SYS to C:\ASPI
Copy {GUIDE}\WINDRV\VASPID.386 to C:\ASPI
Add the following to the Config.Sys file:
DEVICE=C:\ASPI\ASPI2DOS.SYS (for the AHA1510 Adapter card)
DEVICE=C:\ASPI\ASPI4DOS.SYS (for the AHA1542 Adapter card)
Add the following to the Windows SYSTEM.INI file:
DEVICE=C:\ASPI\VASPID.386
Monochrome Installation (Windows)
The following is needed if image scanning or display is required...
Go to directory {GUIDE}\WINKIPP and run INSTALL.
During the install, select the desired drive and directories,
choose the option to install KF-911, then complete the install.
───────────────────────────────────────────────────
─ EXTRA INSTRUCTIONS FOR - NEW LOTUS NOTES EXTENSION ────────
───────────────────────────────────────────────────
In order for Lotus Notes samples to be used, they must be moved from
the {GUIDE}\SAMPLES\DATA directory to the Lotus Notes data directory
(typically {NOTES}\DATA). All Notes samples have .NSF suffixes.
