1.0 About This CD-ROM
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
This library contains online books for IBM VisualAge C++ for OS/2.
The CD-ROM contains the following files:
* Online book files.
* A bookshelf and a bookshelf search index for the IBM VisualAge C++
for OS/2 library.
* This README file
* The IBM SAA* BookManager Library Reader/2 and IBM BookManager Library
Reader/DOS, which are limited editions of the IBM BookManager READ/2
and READ/DOS licensed programs. The IBM Library Reader programs let
you read and search any IBM book specifically enabled by IBM for the
IBM Library Reader programs. Books distributed on CD-ROM by IBM
beginning with the IBM Online Library Starter Kit are enabled for the
IBM Library Reader programs.
* A program that installs an IBM Library Reader program, sets up the
BookManager book and bookshelf search path, and writes OS/2 Group
entries.
* The IBM Bookshelf Upload Program that lets you upload individual
bookshelves of IBM books to an MVS or VM host from any host-attached
PS/2* workstation.
* The IBM Softcopy Receiver Tool (SCRT), Version 1.2.
The SCRT allows you to select online bookshelves and books
from a CD-ROM and transfer them to host DASD or a workstation hard
disk. The host version runs on MVS and VM; the workstation version
runs on OS/2 and DOS as well as an OS/2 or DOS LAN server. The SCRT
includes:
- An SCRT program for MVS, VM, OS/2, and DOS
- A BKSADD EXEC for MVS users.
This CD-ROM contains the following information about the SCRT:
- The IBM Softcopy Receiver Tool User's Guide
- A READSCRT.TXT file, an abbreviated ASCII version of the IBM
Softcopy Receiver Tool Users 's Guide,
- Instructions for using the SCRT on your workstation, "Receiving
Books and Bookshelves Using the SCRT" in topic 3.0.
Notes:
1. All books on this CD-ROM appear in the English language.
2. The book files on this CD-ROM were created with BookManager* BUILD.
You need either BookManager READ Version 1.2 (or higher) or the
IBM Library Reader programs furnished on this CD-ROM to view them.
1.1 Organization of Online Book Files on This CD-ROM
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
The BOOKENG.AGR, PLALRENG.AGR, SCRTENG.AGR, README.ENG, and READSCRT.TXT
files are in the root directory.
The books and bookshelf search index files are in the \BOOKS subdirectory.
The bookshelf file is in the \SHELVES subdirectory.
Installation, loading, and the IBM Library Reader program modules are in
other subdirectories.
1.2 Getting Started
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
To use these online books on a workstation with a CD-ROM drive (or
attached to a network equipped with a CD-ROM drive), you must use one of
the following: the IBM Library Readers (provided on this CD-ROM), IBM
BookManager READ/2 or IBM BookManager READ/DOS.
To use the online books and bookshelves on an MVS system, you must
transfer the files from this CD-ROM to MVS using the IBM Softcopy Receiver
Tool, the IBM Bookshelf Upload Program for MVS, or any file transfer
utility that supports both ASCII and binary file transfer to MVS. You
must use IBM BookManager READ/MVS to read them.
To use the online books and bookshelves on a VM system, you must transfer
the files from this CD-ROM to VM using the IBM Softcopy Receiver Tool, the
IBM Bookshelf Upload Program for VM, or any file transfer utility that
supports both ASCII and binary file transfer to VM. You must use IBM
BookManager READ/VM to read them.
Note: If you have already installed SCRT Version 1.0 or 1.1 on MVS or VM,
you should reinstall Version 1.2, the improved version of the SCRT
included on this CD-ROM. The READSCRT.TXT file on this CD-ROM
contains installation instructions.
For software and hardware requirements for OS/2* and DOS workstations,
see:
* IBM Online Libraries: Softcopy Collection Kit User's Guide

branch office serving your locality.
1.3 IBM VisualAge C++ for OS/2 Library
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
This section lists the bookshelf, bookshelf search index, and book files
on this CD-ROM.
A letter code in the first column of the table identifies files that are
new or have changed since they were last distributed on this product kit.
If more than one code applies, the code with the highest priority is
shown. The codes, highest priority listed first, are:
N New (first time the online book is available)
T Technical change (new or changed information about the product)
S Service change (new or changed information that is not the result of a
change to the product, for example, information added as result of
reader's comments)
E Softcopy enhancement (modification of source files to facilitate
BookManager features).
For a complete description of technical and service changes, see the
"Summary of Changes" section within each book, when applicable.
The approximate size of each file is shown in megabytes, rounded to the
nearest hundredth (1MB = 1 000 000 bytes). The table and formulas in
"Estimating Host DASD Storage Requirements" in topic 1.5 help you convert
megabytes into tracks and cylinders.

1.5 Estimating Host DASD Storage Requirements
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
(C) Copyright IBM Corp. 1995
Use the following table and formulas to determine the approximate number
of tracks or cylinders needed to upload files to host direct access
storage devices.
|----------|------------|-----------------|
| | MB per | |
| Device | Track | MB per Cylinder |
|----------|------------|-----------------|
| 3380 | .040 | .600 |
|----------|------------|-----------------|
| 3390 | .048 | .720 |
|----------|------------|-----------------|
| 9340 | .040 | .600 |
|----------|------------|-----------------|
Formulas:
1. Mb to upload = Mb of books + Mb of bookshelves + Mb of search indexes
2. Approximate tracks = Mb to upload/Mb per track
Approximate cylinders = Mb to upload/Mb per cylinder
2.0 Installing or Updating the IBM Online Library
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
This CD-ROM includes a program to help you install and set up an IBM
Online Library. The program installs or updates the IBM Library Reader on
your hard disk and updates your workstation so that you can access the
online book files. If you already have the IBM Library Reader,
BookManager READ/2, or BookManager READ/DOS installed and you are adding a
new collection of IBM online books, you should still run the installation
program to set up your book and bookshelf search path so you can access
the online book files.
Notes:
1. If you are using Microsoft** Windows**, you must exit Windows before
executing the DOS installation program for the IBM Library Reader.
2. For information on transferring the IBM Library Reader to workstations
without CD-ROM drives, see IBM Online Library: Getting Started OS/2
and DOS Editions (available as an online book on this CD-ROM).
2.1 Installing or Updating the IBM Library Reader from a CD-ROM
