Purposes of ZBackup:
o In general, provides a simple and convenient
interface for using PKZIP and PKUNZIP.
o Provides a simple scrollable directory listing
of any and all subdirectories in which the user
can select subdirectories or individual files
that are to be backed up or restored using PKZIP
o A convenient way to look at directory listings
as well as ZIP file contents.

Sorts
═════
Alt-E = sort listings by extension
Alt-N = sort listings by filename
Alt-D = sort listings by date + time
Alt-P = print current window contents
Sorts will not be executed if the amount of
data in the list exceeds the maximum number
of items allowed in the data buffer. This
maximum is set when loading the program, ie.
ZBACKUP 512 allows for 512 items per list in
memory at one time, therefore a list of 513
items will not be sorted. Loading the program
with a simple ZBACKUP command will set the
buffer at 5 times the number of lines in the
listbox. This allows you to manage your
memory on older machines. 512 would the
recommended maximum to allow. If you run out
of memory, then edit ZBACKUP.BAT and lower or
even remove the number.
The current sort is displayed at the bottom of
each listbox, ie. <None>, <Ext>, <Name>, or
<Date>. Note that even though the DIR listbox
is sorted by date, the SEL listbox has no date
to sort, so it's sort may remain as the
previous sort.

BACKUP GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
═══════════════════════════
NOTE: All files (system, hidden, and archived
also) will be displayed in the file lists.
Select all files/directories to be backed up ---
════════════════════════════════════════════
To move to another drive ---
────────────────────────
- Press 'D'
- Type the desired drive into the pop-on box.
To move to another directory ---
────────────────────────────
- To go to a previous/parent directory either,
move your cursor to the top .. line of the
listing and then press ENTER
- To go into a subdirectory, move your cursor
to the desired subdirectory; press ENTER.
To mark/select the files/subdirectories ---
───────────────────────────────────────
- The .. file at the list top is NOT selectable
- Use the up/down ARROW KEYS to move to the
file/subdirectory desired
- Use the SPACE BAR to select/deselect
' ──»' indicates a directory which has some of
its contents marked; to mark all files
in this directory, unmark then remark by
pressing the SPACE BAR twice.
'═══»' indicates a completely marked directory
'═══' indicates a file that is marked
'«═══' indicates a file/directory that is not
marked directly but is contained in a
marked parent directory
- A maximum of 200 is set for the number of
marked items due to the extreme time it takes
PKZip to process more than 100 files (5
minutes or more, depending upon the processor
speed).
To look at currently selected files
───────────────────────────────────
- The right window displays all currently
selected files/subdirectories.
- Tab key toggles between left & right windows
only when the right window contains data
- The right window is also scrollable to the
left and right using the arrow keys.
To UNmark ALL selected files/subdirectories
───────────────────────────────────────────
- Press 'U' to clear the dataset
To load a previously saved dataset
──────────────────────────────────
- Press 'L' & select the dataset from the list.
- The contents of the dataset will be listed in
the right window and the left window will
display the currently displayed directory
with the selections updated according to the
selected dataset in the right window.
To save a dataset of current selections
───────────────────────────────────────
- Press 'S'
- Type in the name to give to the new dataset.
- If it already exists you will be asked if you
wish to overwrite it with the message:
File Already Exists. Overwrite (Y/N)?
- It is not required to save a dataset to do a
backup; it is for the convenience of users
who need the same set repeatedly.
Backup your selected files ---
══════════════════════════
- Press F8
- You will be prompted in a pop-on box:
- Titled:
Zip File Name (Ex. D:\BACKUPS\BACKUP01.ZIP)
- Type in the name for the new ZIP file
- Be sure to include the drive and the .ZIP
as the example shows.
- Using the example, the file will be placed
in the directory D:\BACKUPS
- Using D:\Backup1.zip, the file will be
placed in the root subdirectory on D:
- You will be prompted in a pop-on box:
Disk Spanning (Y/N)?
If the data is being backed up on floppies
and will take more than one floppy, then
answer 'Y', otherwise answer 'N'.
- PKZip will then be in control and will keep
you updated as to which file it is currently
adding or updating in your ZIP file.
- When PKZip is finished, you will have the
message: Backup Complete. Press any Key....
- You will be returned to the your original
screen to continue.
════════════════════════════
RESTORE GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
════════════════════════════
From the initial ZBackup screen, press 'R' to
enter the restore mode.
Select the ZIP File you wish to use to restore
══════════════════════════════════════════════
- NOTE of WARNING using PKUNZIP: If you have
used disk spanning to backup your files, then
the directory for those files is on the LAST
disk. If you use any of the other disks from
the disk-spanned set to get your restore list
then PKUNZIP may either give you a warning
message after several minutes of looking and
ask you to use PKZipFix which is NOT the
correct action in this case OR it may simply
leave you locked in the grips of PKUNZIP and
not let control return to ZBACKUP. So, BE
SURE TO USE THE LAST DISK OF A DISK-SPANNED
SET IN ORDER TO GET YOUR RESTORE LIST.
- When entering the restore mode, a pop-on box
will appear labeled "Load Zip File". It will
contain a file listing in which you can
navigate to other drives and directories just
as described above.
- To exit the "Load Zip File" box, press Esc.
- After exiting the pop-on "Load Zip File" box,
you may redisplay it by pressing 'L' for Load
Zip Listing.
- To return to the Backup Files Mode, press 'B'
- After selecting a ZIP file (by locating the
cursor on it and then pressing ENTER), you
will be able to scroll up/down/left/right
through the list of files contained in the
selected ZIP file.
Select all items in the ZIP file to be restored
═══════════════════════════════════════════════
- Select/mark ALL files by pressing 'A'
- Deselect/unmark ALL files by pressing 'U'
- Select/Deselect an item by moving the cursor
to the item and press the SPACE BAR.
Restore your selected files ---
═══════════════════════════
- Press F8.
- You will be prompted with a "Restore Path
(Ex. D:\) pop-on box. Follow the example.
All subdirectories will be created if they
do not exist according to the pathnames you
see in the ZIP listing.
- Press ENTER.
- PKZip will then be in control and will keep
you updated as to which file it is currently
restoring.
- BE SURE TO READ ALL MESSAGES from PKUNZIP
to verify that it had no problem, such as
"Disk Full", etc. There will be no beep.
- IF A FILE ALREADY EXISTS, PKZIP will prompt
you with an unexplained warning message:
PKUNZIP: (W18) Warning! .... already exists.
Overwrite (y/n/a/r)?
type 'y' to overwrite the existing ZIP
type 'n' to NOT overwrite the existing ZIP
type 'a' to overwrite ..ALL.. existing files
type 'r' to rename the unzipped file so you
can keep the original; you will be
asked what filename to use
- When PKZip has finished, ZBACKUP will give
you the message: Restoration Complete.
Press any Key....
- You will be returned to the program.
ZBSetUp Help ---
════════════
Run ZBSetUp to reset the screen colors if you
wish to use something other than the defaults
set up for you. Follow the instructions on
the screen. It can also be used to set back
to default colors. Default colors will be
used, if you do not wish to set your own.
Installation ---
════════════
ZBackup will expect the zb.hlp file to be
present in the same subdirectory with
zbackup.exe. Another fact you may wish to
know is that all .DST files will be saved into
that same directory. These are the files into
which you save your stored backup listings.
It is not required that you save a dataset, but
if you do, this is where it will be placed.
Also, PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE must either be
in the same directory with ZBACKUP or in a path
directory.
